Believe

BELIEVE....this isn't supposed to be easy. Nothing this year has been. Whether on the field or off, every time things looked about set, unexpected problems arose. But in the end, the conclusion we sought was EARNED, each and every time. This series is simply a microcosm of all that has preceded it. This season has been filled with magic, and more lies ahead. As for history? Forget it. History doesn't throw a pitch or swing a bat. History belongs to those who make it, and it takes place in the present tense. Our history will be made on Tuesday. Be proud....and BELIEVE.

Pretty darn good

This is my seventh straight ACL, and it was probably the best all around experience yet. Music was solid, but the lineup’s core wasn’t that fantastic. Got to see a lot of bands I had seen before, couple new ones…

I saw The Eagles, Phish, Muse, Flaming Lips, Spoon, Vampire Weekend, Norah Jones, Band of Horses, Deadmau5, Gogol Bordello, The Black Keys, Pat Green, The XX, Silversun Pickups, Matt and Kim, Temper Trap, Miike Snow, Ryan Bingham, Pete Yorn, Blues Traveler, Amos Lee, Martin Sexton, Robert Randolph, Charlie Mars, Band of Heathens, and I think thats it!

On a side note

I saw your review of Neon Indian… I think, and believe, that he really has to pick a project a go with it. And, for all intents and purposes, I think his Vega style is better. I think that quasi-return to the 80’s music style could really be a hit, especially with the proper visual effects. Its a solid group tho, Palermo (sp?) has some talent for sure.

You don't like them

doesn’t mean they are terrible. Musical taste is VERY subjective. I don’t really like the Eagles either, but I wouldn’t say they are terrible.

When you're drowning, you don't say 'I would be incredibly pleased if someone would have the foresight to notice me drowning and come and help me,' you just scream.

Disagree

Rihanna’s fine as a hook girl, and Spears surrounds herself with enough great songwriters that she’s had her share of really good songs (Toxic in particular… it’s incredibly coverable, and there are a lot of good versions out there).

I said it in the other thread, so I'll say it again here

But for me at least, being told to “believe” after the last two games is pretty tough to swallow. This team has gone from simply needing to come home and punch their ticket to the ALCS to allowing themselves to slide to the brink of disaster.

You’ll have to excuse me if I have a hard time “believing” in a team that would allow that to happen.

Don’t get me wrong, I want them to win Tuesday and I’ll be pulling for them just as hard as anyone, but that’s how I feel right now.

It's not a matter of history, or defeatist attitude

It’s a matter of this team putting themselves into a “win or go home position” despite basically stealing home field advantage from the Rays and taking a 2-0 series lead in the first two games.

That shouldn’t have happened. We shouldn’t be in this position. Yet here we are.

So fuck belief. They don’t deserve my belief again until they win game 5.

...he’s basically the Rangers’ version of Nick Blackburn. - Matt Klaassen on Tommy Hunter

by LSJ on Oct 11, 2010 2:09 AM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

That's not belief, that's observation.

When they win game 5, you won’t believe they can win the ALCS unless you actually see it happen. That’s not belief at all.

I think I mentioned this to a couple of guys before, but you’ve illustrated what I think the difference is between good crowds and bad ones: a bad crowd will cheer when something good happens, a good crowd will cheer to make something good happen.

We’re in the playoffs now, even if we shouldn’t be in this position. If it’s another 11 years before we come back, do you want to remember 2010 as the postseason you spent whining and complaining, or the one you spent screaming your lungs out willing the team to win?

I just want to remember 2010 as the year we didn't choke in the ALDS, period.

I could give a shit whether I spent the postseason screaming my lungs out “willing the team on” or not.

Yeah, I’m a “believe it when I see it” type of guy. Sue me. That’s just the way I am. And in my experience getting yourself all worked up “believing” and “willing it to happen” only leads to an even more crushing disappointment than usual when it actually doesn’t.

Understand though, that doesn’t mean I’m not rooting the team on. It just means I refuse to let this team play with my heartstrings in that kind of a manner, especially after they screwed the pooch the last two days.

I might concede to this if the Rays had come to Arlington and simply beat us

But they didn’t. The Rays came to Arlington and we fucking beat ourselves, especially on Sunday.

We had ourselves in the best possible position anyone could’ve been in after 2 games in an ALDS, and we let it slip right through our fingers. Anyone who wants to excuse that with a generic “playoff baseball is hard” is ignoring reality.

all baseball is hard, bitch

And that is reality.

I’m thinking that the Rangers won the first two and got a little cocky. Baseball’s a humbling game and it put them on their ass for two days. Luckily they didn’t play today and have hopefully gotten their mojo back. I think it’s likely that tomorrow they’ll play more focused baseball, having good at bats and making the plays that they should.

Pretty sure they’ll advance with Cliff Lee on the mound. He’s pretty good. Enjoy the ride.

Both are negative, but the first is reasonably negative, and the second is just a byproduct of a shitty outlook in general.

Hey Chuck...

…thank you for dropping by and giving us the little reminder and pep-talk. Yes, Sundays game was tough to swallow, as it didn’t really seem like we were ever really in that game. Saturday was a let down, but it “felt” like we were really in that game and it just didn’t happen.

Actually, you are 100% right about history. History is only something to look back upon, and hopefully learn from. It is not a predictor of what is to come, unless everything being equal, the same/similar circumstances are occurring. That is not the case here. Different players, different coaches, different opponents, different owners and most importantly, different attitudes and beliefs.

For this reason, anything that has happened in the past does not have anything to do with what will happen in game 5. Bottom line is, if the players go out there focused and execute like they can, we should win. If we eliminate the mistakes in the field, Cliff pitches decent and our guys focus on each and every at-bat, we should win.

It is definitely true that history is written by the victorious, and whether we will have the privilege of writing that history will be decided on the field, in one game, with collectively, the best group of guys this organization has ever thrown on the field. I hope for us, for you and for the players themselves, they can capture some of that 2010 Ranger Magic….just so we can bitch and agonize about games in the ALCS!

Thanks Chuck for immense efforts

What you faced at the auction and bankruptcy to acquire this team makes the current situation pale by comparison. You as bidder have faced and defeated worse odds than the Rangers going into game 5. I was very happy to have shook your hand in Tampa (I was sitting next to Scott Servais game 2) and no matter the outcome I think you will see a tremendous impact in the fan support the Rangers see from here on out. Cheers.

I believe right now

that we have a shot on Tuesday, as good as any team has to win a game. My problem is, the last two losses have been gut wrenching and deflating. We need big hits that we didn’t get yesterday with men on base and in scoring position to win tomorrow.

Making the playoffs is big for this team. Winning a series is even bigger. History aside, losing after being up 2-0 is something that would be unbelievably hard to swallow, so I’d say my offseason hinges on Tuesday. I do believe, but years of disappointment allows doubt to creep in. Saying that, I will be watching every pitch, and will be rooting harder than ever on Tuesday. Go Rangers!

I'm relying on all you idiots to "will this team on"

I really, REALLY wanted to be part of a series clinch celebration this weekend but that didn’t happen and now I will have to celebrate in Costa Rica.

Hope you guys enjoy the celebration on Tuesday night. I’m trying to break from my normal negative self to have some faith that this team will do what they’ve done all season…the unexpected. Hopefully, when I get back, we are discussing the next match-up with Yankee pitching.

Not gonna lie....

….I don’t believe. I want to, but I really don’t. I kept telling my friend that I attended yesterday’s game that I had a bad feeling and a sense of doom about it, and you know what? They flat out sucked at baseball Sunday.

by FuturePants on Oct 11, 2010 9:06 AM CDT reply actions

when your 2-3-4 hitters do nothing

and look beyond bad at doing nothing then you worry.

when they look as bad as those 3 did, you worry even more. At this point I want Cruz hitting 4th and Vladdy 5th but that will never happen with Wash.

What I am worried about is Cliff allowing 2/1/0 runs and the Rangers not being able to scratch out 1/2 runs against Price. I can easily see Lee going out there and throwing a CG 5 hitter and allowing 1 run and this team losing because our manager has recently decided to fuck small ball, because there is no reason to move a guy from 1st to 2nd with 0 outs and a hitter up that has done nothing in the 2nd half.

lets be honest here, if we have 3+ innings where we get the leadoff hitter on and fail to score we flat out do not deserve to win the game. and im scared shitless that is what is going to happen in game 5.

i want nothing more than for elvis to start off the game with a 1B/walk (HOW ABOUT A FREAKING BUNT WHEN YOU HAVE A 3B WHO HAS A BAD LEG ANYONE?) and for FOTF to bunt him to 2nd. this would make me beyond happy. i would be 100% ok with our #2 hitter going 0-0 with 4 sac bunts at this point in the series, because lets be brutally honest here. he has looked horrible (which is a huge understatement). i really dont think that blanco could look that bad at the plate, and at least he can drop down a sac bunt and not fuck it up. also he would not be a statue at 3b…

anyway, i want to he hopeful. i want there to be magic. i want FOTF to go 3-4 with 2 2b and a HR but it simply isnt. going. to. happen.

and i am scared shitless we are going to have lee throw a CG, lose 1-0 and have him not even consider texas as a FA.

I mean we DO have Cliff Lee on the mound and for whatever reason, it seems this team does better against the Cy Young candidates of the world. With that said, I have been watching Ranger baseball and been following with all my heart for I guess 33 years now. Knowing I’ve been following a baseball team for all these years that I’ve considered snake-bitten, it’s just real hard to turn the switch and think something bad isn’t going to come out of this series. Like Chuck said though, this series is just a microcosm of the season. The story is written and the Rangers just need to finish the script. I need to be able to turn that switch and realize that this team has nothing to do with the last 33 teams I’ve watched. Winning Tuesday night will go a long way in me doing that.

Do I Believe?

I believe that Cliff Lee gives us as good of a chance to win a post season series as we have ever had. I believe that he will pitch well and the Rangers will win. I also believe each game is a new game, that each day is a new day, and what happened a day or two before, is water under the bridge. So I am still here hoping and believing the Rangers will win. The only thing is I hate is being optomistic, because it is so contrary to my nature. But if I am truly realistic, there are times I am going to be optomistic and this is one of them. Cliff Lee and the Rangers give us a solid shot of winning the Tuesday game.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

The outfield defense looked incredible in the two games in Tampa earlier in the series. And, its at night (yes, I’m aware they play in a dome) which negates any problem there may have been with sunlight against the cloth roof. Along with Hammy’s vampire-like ability to hit so much better at night. Not to mention that Cliff Lee guy that we picked up for this exact purpose. There’s plenty of reason to be positive about Game 5. Plenty. Game 3 and 4 sucked in ways I didn’t know where possible, but this is going to happen. Have a little faith, fellas.

The only bad thing about that picture is the cowboys pictures, minus Bates and White.

You know what

As everyone here knows, playoff baseball is a crap-shoot. And yet, whatever happens in the playoffs is what will define players and teams for years to come. If the Rangers lose three in a row to a good team like the Rays during the regular season (which happened), it won’t ever, ever be remembered or cared about. If the Rangers lose three in a row to a good team like the Rays in October after being up 2-0, this team and its players will always be known as chokers, at least until they do win a series. It’s not fair.

So all you can do is ENJOY THE RIDE. All of the defeatists are totally missing the point of playoff baseball… enjoy it! FFS if you can’t enjoy Game 5 with Cliff Lee on the mound why are you even watching? The game is basically a coin flip. We might win, and if we do it’s going to be the greatest day in Rangers history. We might lose, and if we do, we do. That doesn’t change the fact that this has probably been the greatest, most fun baseball season in Arlington EVER. Let’s all just enjoy the moment.

Thanks Chuck. Somehow, I feel better. Cliffy’s got this one.

"I also have to say that I was pretty obviously wrong about C.J. Wilson. As recently as the All Star Break, I proclaimed the decision to move him the rotation a failure. That was epicfail of a, well, epic nature" - AJM

We got Cliff Lee for one fucking reason and it was to win the clincher

It’s time mother fucker…win it

Chuck, you picked me up when I was down

“The show Survivor had the original premise of putting people on an island with Chuck Greenberg. There were no survivors, and nobody is brave enough to go to the island to retrieve the footage.”

“Chuck Greenberg is the reason Waldo is hiding.”

“Chuck Greenberg died 20 years ago, Death just hasn’t built up the courage to tell him yet.”

and one more…

“Chuck Greenberg will never have a heart attack. His heart isn’t nearly foolish enough to attack him.”

Gave 5. We’ve got this.

"Look at our current situation with that camel f$%ker over in Iraq. Pacifism is not something to hide behind."

Just told...

…a friend of mine about this fanpost. He’s a massive Braves fan who was on suicide watch after the third Brooks Conrad error last night.

His response: “That’s awesome. Some mid-level manager at Liberty Media’s corporate office was not forced to do that for Braves fans after last night’s game.”

And that’s why we’re lucky. Thanks, Chuck. My spirits are up.

Do your thing, Cliff. Do your thing.

really want the rangers to win bad

they need to win by like 5 runs.

tired of being the only team not to win a playoff series!

and also, i’ve already edited a short fight with the yankees for a video. jeter and arod are going down!

rangers vs giants in the world series baby!

if we make it to the Series

I’d rather face the phillies. throw our Lefties against their lefty lineup

Thanks Chuck

No matter what happens on the field, the best thing to happen to the Rangers this year is the ownership change. Thanks for making it happen.

Why did you not renew Lewin's K?

This sucks…

he's got people under him

that make those choices. the top guy doesn’t make ALL choices regarding personel. i’m sure they either have somebody lined up or some consultant douchebag made the call

by gossamer on Oct 11, 2010 4:17 PM CDT up reply actions

He and Nolan have the final say

with how much Chuck is wrapped up in fan experience you know damn well the play by play guy was a big deal. They decided they didn’t like Lewin’s style and that was that.

Yeah, well, sometimes nothin' can be a real cool hand.

How you do you know 'that was that'?

How do you know Lewin doesn’t have a national package that allows him to keep his Chargers gig?

i know damn well heh

sure if he didn’t want lewin gone, he’d definitely have the pull lol.

but that’s why you have management and department heads etc… for. you defer to them.

i wish lewin would be there next year, but we do not know what all went down other than maybe style being an issue.

i’m sure consultants show that he didn’t test well in certain demos. keep in mind that they just did a deal with FSN and it may have hinged on lewin’s dismissal.

i hate consultants.

You may be right. I bet it is a combination of things.

Some people like Lewin some some think he is a joke. I amsure the research was done and maybe it was mutual… When there is a new boss and a coworker leaves who enjoys what they do I tend to wonder. Either way it’s done

Yeah, well, sometimes nothin' can be a real cool hand.

this is a pretty big choice.

public face of the rangers and all…i doubt this was handed off to someone else.

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

To the haters:

The Rays strength all year has been the fact that their rotation isn’t as good at the top as it is deep. So it doesn’t surprise me that we dropped the last two games… after all they’re a very good baseball team.

Cliff Lee has got this, The Rangers have got this. It’s time Texas. These guys care way too much to just fall over like this.

I can’t tell you how ready I am for tomorrow.
