Rangers, come out to play.... aka Roll Call for the Bronx
This team has given us fans the first title in the history of the organization, and last night was a masterpiece of "heads-up" baseball from this scrappy team. Although they are starting out in Arlington, the 3 games next week will be in one of the most hostile environments imaginable: The Bronx.
This is the roll call for those heading to the game. This team needs, deserves, and has earned your road support for this series. The ALCS is more uncharted territory for the Rangers. It will be expensive. It will be inconvenient. It will be fantastic to get some retribution for the bullying the team has gotten over the past decades from the dreaded pinstripe mercenaries.
I am heading up for game 5. Flying in at noon, flying out at 9pm same day. For those unfamiliar with New York, one of the easiest ways to get to the stadium is by flying to LaGuardia as it is the closest airport by cab or bus (7 miles). Traffic can be hell and those 7 miles can take up to 45 minutes to make. Another alternative (my choice) is to fly to Newark airport in New Jersey. It is 30 miles away but you can take the Air Train ($12) directly from Newark airport to Penn Station in Manhattan (20 minutes ride) then take the Blue A line subway ($2) "uptown" to 59th, 125th, or 129th street stations and switch over to the "Bronx/uptown" bound Orange B line. The B line will take you to Yankee Stadium which is 161 Street station. I think it will take 30-40 minutes to get from Penn station to the Yankee Stadium.

20 minute ride from Newark to Penn Station?
Keep dreaming, my friend. Keep dreaming.
That said, I salute your enthusiasm and dedication. I would love, love, love to get up there but work obligations interfere. I’m praying for a Giants win in the NLCS so I can make the trip to SF.
the transit center lists train departure and arrival times
leaving from Penn station is train #3279 at 7:08p arriving Newark airport at 7:33p. #3177 leaves 7:18p and arrives 7:39p. #3881 leaves 7:42p and arrives 8:20p. I guess it depends on how many stops each particular train makes.

Just sayin'
I’ve never made it in quicker than 30 minutes. Either way, doesn’t sound like your itinerary is that tight.
Giants
winning the NLCS would be great. I would finally get a chance to see the Rangers play in the playoffs!
I'm in
assuming someone can pick up the tab for my whole trip…
Coming from someone who’s going to game 3 himself, I do not plan on taking the train, as I do not plan on being crammed into subways and trains, getting to the game late, having to wait outside the stadium on a line to get to the guy checking ticket stubs, go through security, etc. I live in NY of course, but the drive is a lot better than the train. I know it’s expensive, but might want to take a taxi.
Don’t expect to get the first subway available, as when I went to a Yankees Royals game earlier this year in the pouring rain I got the last seat on it. You’ll likely have to wait a little.
As for the plan itself it’s a good plan, but it’s been tried many times before. Maybe it’ll be more inspired because it’s the playoffs and all, but the Yankees fans are brutal in the bleachers, I’ll warn you in advance. Not saying this is right (it’s not it’s awful) but if you sit in the bleachers and cheer for the other team you will get stuff thrown at you and curses yelled at you.
That being said, good luck with everything and the series. Sincerely.

Big Yankees and Rangers fan!
Metro-North has been a much better option for me.
I took it when I went up for a Rangers/Yankees series last year. Trains to/from Grand Central were less than half full. Really no hassle or wait at all. If you take the 4 train, you’re going to be in a mess of people to get out of there after the game and the train will be crammed until midtown Manhattan, most likely.
Metro-North is a little more expensive but definitely worth it to avoid the hassle.
I sat in the bleachers in April when the Rangers played there
. I got trash thrown at me, but then some guy stood up and yelled at the woman throwing the trash and it stopped. That was the only incident I had, everyone else I encountered was nice. But of course we were getting swept pretty easily that seires. I always hated Yankee fans before that trip, now I only hate Texas based Yankee fans.
I went on the Subway to get there and it didn’t seem all that crowded to me.
exploding highfive
I’m just saying, I’m glad you generally don’t mind us Yankees fans, but (I’m not included in this) if you do go expect a lot worse. It’s playoff time. The bleacher creatures were cursing out Denard Span. I don’t support it necessarily, but if you go, expect a lot worse than one unruly fan.

Can't pregame. Got a job.
But I’ll get to the Bronx by 6 or so, could have a beer at one of the places on River.
