Worst World Series Champion Ever?
Hopefully this hasn't already been posted...if so I apologize. This artice on Yahoo is suggesting that if we, the Yankees, or the Giants win the World Series, the team may go down as the worst team to ever win a championship. Anyways, thought some of you may be interested in reading it.

I find this line of thinking
ridiculously fucking idiotic.

Yeah,
I can’t possibly believe the 85 Win Twins are more STDevs above the mean than the 90 win Rangers. Just eyeballing the standings in 85 it is clearly wrong, or his methodology is bizarre. 3 wins above average being more STDs above average than 9 wins? The STD has more than tripled? No frigging way.

The '06 Cardinals are a similar case to us.
A team who, at their best, was near the best, if not the very best, in baseball. They just weren’t at their best for the whole regular season.
But they won ’83 games in a weaker league, so. . .
but I don't think that's his point...
he says that 90 wins aren’t that big a deal because there were a bunch of teams with 90 losses… you should win 90 games against those teams… so the s.d. is much larger.
Now, I don’t think using W/L records is the best way to describe the best team ever… the statistic I would use is “Your 2010 AL West Champion Texas Rangers”
The 2006 Cards had a deceptive record because they
lost a shit-load of games in the last half of September.
My ’88 Dodgers had a pretty good record (94 wins?) but that may have been the worst team to ever win a championship. In the post-season, Gibby had one at bat and the offense was keyed by a very ancient Mickey Hatcher!!!

Why do you say the Rangers have a deceptive record?
The Cards were 80-69 and then won only 3 of their next 12 games (played only 161 games).
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."

Um, because they lost several wins to the DL and their best player spent half the season on another team.
When healthy, the Rangers right now are a lot closer to the best teams in baseball than the record suggests.
Which is why so many people are sitting there stunned that the Rangers could win playoff games.
And they didn't realize who their best first baseman was until, what, August?
Not that I blame them for expecting it to be Smoak.
The great majority of the time, you are what you are.
I don’t buy the “they lost several wins to the DL” bullshit.

You're right.
Andres Blanco and Joaquin Arias help a team win just as many games as Ian Kinsler.
lmao
You're giving credit for things they didn't do.
We have several players who are very talented but they also tend to get hurt or miss 30-50 games a year.
That’s the team we have.

Why is that deceptive?
Losing games in September counts, too.
They didn’t have a huge division lead. They beat the Astros for the Central by a game and a half.
The Cards had a 7 game lead on September 20 and then
had a mini-collapse.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
"The Influence continues." Josey Wales (1/18/10)
Well, that should be held against them.
Mini-collapses are a bad thing. Good teams don’t have ’em very often.
The 2000 NY Yankees won the World Series (3rd in a row) and finished their season 87-74
but also lost 15 of their last 18 games.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
"The Influence continues." Josey Wales (1/18/10)
And they weren't a very good team, either.
In fact they are listed in the article as one of the worst.
But if the Phillies win, they won't be the worst...
Right. What if they lose to SF? What is the thinking here?
a much more compelling arguement
is that the rangers are one of the best 90 win teams of all time.

I can count on more than one hand how many games we threw away...
My eye test doesn’t think this was a 90 win team..
More like 95-97

We were at least a full win better by pythagorean
And we had our full “A” lineup for 20% of the season. I’d take this team up against the last 5 WS champs and expect to win.
Thats about right.
We won 90 despite injuries to key players throughout the year.

1973 Mets
Their pitching was good, the rotation and the bullpen, but the hitting was pretty bad overall.
I so wish that my Mets won in '73
because then we would have the undisputed distinction of being the absolute worst team to ever win a World Series.
Sandy Alderson for Mets GM
R.A. Dickey for Governor!
More like best World Series Champion ever...
am I right, gentlemen?!

What a troll.
My hope is that one day people will look back and see how ridiculous they were for discounting this team.

In fairness to the 2006 Cardinals.......(yes, I'm biased)
……they were basically the same team that went 105-57 in 2004 and 100-62 in 2005.
They had some rough stretches in the 2006 regular season and almost pissed away the 7 game lead in the final 2 weeks. They were getting old and were flawed, but not bad.
I’ll go to my grave thinking STL was better than BOS in 2004, but the Redbirds got steamrolled. The baseball gods made that up to STL 2 seasons later.
On a related note, the 1987 Minnesota Twins can blow me.
"Whenever I'm about to do something, I think 'Would an idiot do that?' And if they would, I do not do that thing."
How does this compare to the 1993 Giants?
They won 103 games but missed the playoffs thanks to the Braves winning 104. That had to be frustrating!

I don't recall.
There is no past World Series…es.
There is only now.

The 1919 Cincinatti Reds say hello.
For a team that was destined to lose the series, they had to have the help of the Black Sox throwing it.

You know...
If the Rangers win the World Series this year and are called the worst World Series team ever, they’ll still have a World Series Ring. And they’ll still be the best team in baseball in 2010 (they are already the best team of the superior American League this year).
As opposed to the inferior American League.

the reason the Rangers only had 90 wins was due to their playing in the best pitching division in Baseball
if they had been in the central they may have won 95 to 98 games, if they were in the east they may have won 94 to 96 games. this is my opinion of course and the only proof i have is the AL west had the best pitching in baseball.
Quote from Yankees GM about the Texas Rangers Beating them in the 2010 ALCS "They manhandled us," Cashman said. "It was like a steamroller. We couldn't stop them."
Great game
Hey, Hey, MN Twins fan here and speaking for all of Minnesota Baseball fans, THANK-YOU!!!!!!! You guys are a fabulous team, tough, go for it baseball players. We can’t ever seem to get by the yanks, and believe me ALL OF MINNESOTA are rooting for you guys, the yells you here coming from up north are us!!!! Go as a team and WIN the WORLD SERIES, there is no better feeling in the world!!!!!!
GOOD LUCK
I'd be perfectly happy to have the Giants adorned with that label.
Please do all you can to save the Rangers from that embarrassment.

What do you call the worst World Series Champion ever?
WORLD SERIES CHAMPION!
Plus all my Cub fan friends wish they could be the worst World Series Champion ever!
All my St Louis Cardinals fans would accept this honor too!
I wouldn’t refuse this honor either!
PS My nominee would be the 2004 Red Sox. They were no talent-no field steroid monkeys. (Had to rip the ESPN acolytes!)
