One of the million things I thought after the game last night

Nice little day for LiamP, Friday. I know that there is no guarantee that Rooney and Man Utd live happily ever after and that everyone is still mad at him, but at the very, very least the club a) was in much, much stronger position to recoup his full value if necessary, and b) it was a clear indication that they had assured him that they wanted to add talent for the long term. What could be bad about any of that?

by Brett Perryman on Oct 23, 2010 3:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Supposedly it took a call to Joel Glazer to change his mind.

This puts some heavy pressure on the Glazers to deliver on the promise that money is available.

From the "My teams CRAP bigger than your club" file ...

Real Madrid has really started to roll over the last 2.5 matches. Up 3-0 at the 36 min mark today. Every player has fully bought in except for DiMaria, who is making strides tho’, especially today. Jose is focusing on him however, hugging him after a nice breakout pass that led to a goal and scolding him for over-dribbling during a later attacking surge. Ronaldo and Higuain are really clicking and looking for each other, using their gifts in purposeful simple moves instead of useless flash. The player I trust least is Pepe – dude could make a stupid mistake in a big match later this season, either a costly fumble or a hot-headed red card. Ozil is simply the best player on the team. Best vision, best stamina, best teamwork, best first touch, best telling balls. They might actually do some damage in the CL knockout stages this year. Big improvements over the last few matches.

I don’t have much of a response to this other than fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu.

Ozil’s what United desperately need and you asshats got him for 16mm.

no sh!te

He’d look awesome feeding the ManU front line. That’s why you guys getting Sneijder terrifies me.

Regarding your comment last night regarding Rooney’s new contract costing City beaucoup future transfer bucks … it did occur to me that a year from now if ManU are coming off a dull Summer transfer campaign and are sitting in 6th or 7th after a poor start, Rooney grumbling could have us replaying the Wayne Media Circus we all just suffered thru. However, if you guys are healthy table-wise and your Summer transfers are inspired, then City won’t be chasing Wayne for at least 3 or 4 years.

by shroomer on Oct 23, 2010 2:00 PM CDT up reply actions

See, when I said something about how bewildered I was by his price, and

people talked about how he was still just a developing player (in addition to the fact his deal running out), it didn’t make much sense to me. I mean, yeah, everyone in their early 20s is probably still developing in some fashion, but this guy was arguably the best attacking midfielder at the world cup and clearly was already world class.

by Brett Perryman on Oct 23, 2010 3:09 PM CDT up reply actions

The price is a hilarious reflection on the Bosman rule.

The concept of free agency is really something that most people over there are vehemently against. See Ian Holloway’s rant on the Rooney situation. What happened with Ozil is that he had 1 year left on his contract before he was going to walk out on Bremen. If they wanted to recoup any money at all for him, they had to sell him when they did. The problem is, given the situation, the player has the majority of the leverage. Bremen could sell him to City, for example, but the player could refuse to agree a personal contract. As a result, Ozil could tell Bremen where he wants to go (Real) and Bremen has to work out what will presumably be a cut-rate deal with that club.

The price was that low because Real Madrid communicated their interest to Ozil’s agent and Ozil decided that’s where he wanted to go. The problem is, this is the definition of tapping up which is illegal but practically impossible to police.

Are there any creative midfielders

United are being somewhat strongly linked to?

As in, not some throwaway rumour about Bastian Schweinsteiger or whomever.

MILNER COST 26 MIL FOR FUCK'S SAKE

HOLY FUCK HOLY FUCK HOLY FUCK HOLY FUCK

IIRC, the negotiations went into a rut when AV wouldn't accept City's 20M bid.

Then the big flurry at the end got it done. So, I look at as … we saved 2M and poof! Ireland’s silliness is removed from the club.

IMO, Ireland is the opposite of multidimensional. He can really only play one position, roaming behind the front line with little defensive responsibility. He can’t play wide because he has no pace or stamina. He can’t play a possession game because he constantly looks for the Hollywood ball. His movement on the field is so counterintuitive to the rest of his teammates shape. IMO, the worse the team around him, the worse off for all involved. Ireland needs to play for a strong team that will allow him to be so eccentric, lazy and selfish. He’s like Berbatov without the extra oomph of talent and athleticism Berbatov has over him. On top of all that he’s a whiny bitch and the BLING criticism he puked at his ex-City teammates was perhaps the biggest single sports hypocrisy I’ve ever seen. Dude is all about rims and rides and Moet and bling. He childishly refuses to play for Ireland over a squabble with the Italian coach of the Irish Nat’l team. Ireland’s a dick. He’s not a winner. Mancini is thrilled he’s gone – as am I. Rant over. And that’s just on one cup of coffee. heh

by shroomer on Oct 24, 2010 8:08 AM CDT up reply actions

He's fucking horrible.

Fine, it’s only one game and he played pretty well vs Chelsea.

But I talked about this at 7500ToHolte, and it’s basically that there doesn’t seem to be a clear role for him on this team right now, considering his erratic form and general personality. Villa has two very good wingers, with Young perfectly able to move from the hole and play on the flank as he did last season. Plus they absolutely need their central midfielders to do the typical defense-and-distribution thing (at least one of those things), and Ireland can’t do either.

And they don’t even have an opportunity to use him in Europe and see what happens there.

Remember to retire Fin's number, Mark.

Is Kaka on the market already?

Because there doesn’t look to be much space for him if the front four just keep rolling, and then they do something weird like get Llorente in January, to park on the bench with Benzema.

I wanted a Champions League rooting interest.

Everybody hates me already for being a ManCity fan, so why not go there since I can’t sink any lower. I like Ozil lots, and Mourinho and Canales sounded interesting. I watch their games and check the Real headlines a coupla times a week. It’s a much more casual follow than my daily hounddogging for all things ManCity. It was tough for a few weeks since the team is so full of jerks, but they are really gelling lately – loads easier to root for them.

My main thought is I hate any of my teams owners owning other sports teams. It takes away from what should be their main focus which is MY TEAM. So I was against Cuban owning the Rangers or Cubs too.
 .
As for Henry, he is a hedge fund guy, can’t get more capitalistic then that. Doubt they will like him in England. Also, I think he said he was going to be “thrifty” with the team, doubt that will make many fans happy in the Liverpool pubs. He has been a fine owner for the Sox so far though.

Worst case scenario as a City fan.

The early red card nullifies any effort to benchmark our development and the 3-points lost to a rival just steepens the CL climb.

deflating – back to square one feeling, sorta – it would be killer to get upset on the road at Wolves next weekend – and Tevez limped off so we might be reliant on lazy Ade at striker – black clouds is all I see

But..but…but…he was once bought by the Fat Spanish Waiter! There’s no way he’s a good player!

(honest truth- I’d take him back at Anfield in a heartbeat- at least he knew how to defend)

Arbeloa's grown on me.

At first, fancy-boyz like Ramos and Marcelo made him look so pedestrian. But like you say, he’s a solid defender. Seems like a good guy, too.

got a kick out of this

and it is somewhat soccer related (from a blog i read)

A fellow referee, about my age, sent an email entitled “Sad News.” Of course, when I saw the subject line, I got worried that my friend might have a serious medical problem. Here’s the text:

Don’t worry – sad for me, funny for you.

I reffed some games at the grade 5/6 intramural jamboree the other day. While waiting for the horn to signal the kickoff, White team asks me who gets the kickoff. I told girls from each team that whoever guessed closest to my age would get the kickoff (taking off my hat in the interests of full disclosure). After several seconds I asked the Orange player closest to me for her guess. She whispers “67.” As I was about to toss the ball to the White team for the kickoff, the closest White player says “72.”

I told them both they were lucky I wasn’t packing my red cards today.

Best to all,

Jeff

I missed the City game – but I could see this L coming from a mile away.

A quick scan of the BM forum shows we couldn’t dominate possession, Balo put on a jerkfest and we missed NDJ, whose lineup absence surprised me. Between now and Jan 4th, City plays almost twice weekly – so if practice makes perfect then we should find our stride by the new year. yeah right …

Two shots on goal

and less than 50% possession is surprising. Stupid Wolves, was hoping for both them and Stoke to be relegated.

An honest eval of City's season so far is that we are sooo lucky ...

to have a decent point total considering how inept we are offensively beyond Tevez. We are still a project for sure – hoping for a CL chase in the 2nd half like last season is probably a realistic outlook. Bleh – and it’s hard not to wonder if the games Mancini is playing with AJ’s head arent’ getting destructive rather than constructive.

I'm already waiting for January

to see how Houllier reshapes the squad. Seems to me like he has very little confidence in what he has right now, and it’s not helped much by having practically no reliable striker (with Agbonlahor out, Carew decrepit and Heskey as the passable hard-working, non goal-scoring type).

Still, they should look better when Albrighton is back.

Can someone translate Rafa for me?

I’m a little distracted, but given my limited attention span at the moment I can’t decipher his analogies.

Benitez has been eager to set the record straight on his time at Anfield, pointing the finger at former Reds managing director Christian Purslow last month when he memorably said that “white liquid in a bottle has to be milk”.

“I think that Mr Hodgson, he doesn’t understand,” Benitez said. "Every single press conference is even worse than the last one.

“He’s talking about things that he doesn’t know, and some people cannot see a priest on a mountain of sugar.

by Brett Perryman on Nov 1, 2010 5:13 PM CDT reply actions

Rafa-speak

I think they’re Spanish expressions, but translating from Rafa:

“White liquid in a bottle has to be milk”- a close equivalent would be “if it looks like a duck…” or “things are generally what they appear to be.”

“A priest on a mountain of sugar”- something obvious, as a priest (who wears all black) would be if sitting on a mountain of (all white) sugar.

I’m sure Rafa will get a lot of grief from the British press for this latest “outburst,” but when someone’s making claims about you that aren’t true (as Hodgson did when he said Rafa gave Kenny Dalglish the cold shoulder) sometimes you have to respond…

I don’t understand how Bale can look so average against Rafael and then look like the best winger on the planet against Maicon.

"Taxi for Maicon"!

And even Phil Neville held him down. So it’s not like speed is the problem…

by jonthefon on Nov 3, 2010 1:11 AM CDT up reply actions

Well, the first couple of times Maicon jumped in aggressively and got burnt.

The next couple of times he played Bale way too tight and was easily outpaced. After that, he played so far off of Bale that he basically allowed Bale to waltz into the penalty area unaccosted.

It was a very weird display (for the first half at least). He couldn’t find the happy medium in terms of how to play Bale.

by LiamP on Nov 3, 2010 1:27 AM CDT up reply actions

Benitez seems to be getting a ton of blame

for hanging Maicon out to dry.

The demo

It looks good so far, though with the new player and agent/contract interfaces this season, in addition to creating my own tactics and training schedules, it almost feels like a real job!

So what type of game do you guys play? I know there are a lot of different approaches to FM- lower league managing, trophy hunting with a big club, journeyman career, or picking your favorite team. I usually go with a team I like (Liverpool on FM08, Lyon on FM10) though I’m contemplating trying a journeyman career save too.

I’ll probably go with Lyon again in FM11- they’re a good “big fish in a small pond” club that can be built into a real force in Europe with the right signings.

Real Madrid should be ahead 4-1 at HT, at least.

Ibra missed an open goal lob from 20 yards out – phew. So many gold-plated scoring chances wasted in this game. gak – RM is dominating play @AC Milan, tho’ – so yay

I wish RM was up more than 1-0, because the 2nd half of the Arsenal game looks like a fun watch.

Well, Pepe made a dumb gaffe which cost us the first goal – see my earlier opinions on him.
Iker looked like an Arsenal goalie out there – really horrible.
Howard Webb was atrocious – the game perpetually teetered on getting out of control.
The 2nd Milan goal was waaaay offside – jaw-dropping none call.
When AC Milan pulled ahead, the Ital time-wasting histrionics kicked in full throttle, Jack. Despicable – how are people fans of Ital soccer? baffling
DiMaria and Ozil swapped roles today – really odd tactics from Jose.

And as I type, Leon scores to tie it up. So … pfffffft to you. ha
Check out Jose’s celebration dance when Leon scored. heh

We deserved a win, draw’s gonna sting them more than it does us. yay team
