you don’t know that the team did or didn’t think Lowe could help. They wanted a RH long man against TB — Lowe isn’t that. They wanted another LH to go against Cano — Lowe isn’t that.

Now they want another power RH arm. Lowe is that, so he’s on the roster. You could argue Nippert vs Lowe, but you’d probably get the same production from either, so really it doesn’t matter.

Sadly, this game doesn’t have the same feel as game 1 of the ALCS where the Rangers looked like the better team for the first 7 innings. From what I saw, the Giants looked like the better team throughout this game. Hopefully, the Rangers show up from now on or this could feel like a really long, short World Series stint for Ranger fans. Probably, but that's idiocy on their part.

Pitchers have bad games sometimes. Even the best pitchers.

It’s unfortunate that it happened in Game 1 of the World Series, but, y’know, Lincecum was not exactly lights-out either. It’s a team’s job to pick up their pitcher when he has a bad game, just like it’s his job to sometimes when one when the team doesn’t hit.

But then, the media is full of idiots.

Everything that could go wrong, did.

The only thing I take out of this game is that Vlad should not see the field again in this series under any circumstances. Unfortunately, I suspect Wash won’t see it that way.

Everything else was just weird, and I’d caution against trying to take any lessons from it.

Question for Robbie:

How do the numbers on the simulation change if you set Game 1 as a Giants win?

by ftwdrummer on Oct 27, 2010 11:19 PM CDT reply actions

Rangers still win 52-54% of the time, depending on how you do the league adjustment.

Weirdly, it doesn’t make much of a difference. But even if you take it all the way down to the ~.530 record this year, Rangers are still slightly favored to go 4-2 or 5-1 through the last six.

Making fun of game simulator types the night

there’s 18 runs scored in SFO when Cliff Lee & Tim Lincecum are the starting pitchers?

Nobody saw that coming just like nobody saw the Mets beating the Orioles in ‘69 or the Dodgers beating the Mighty A’s in ’88.

Come World Series time, those things are mostly worthless and a complete waste of time.

Ogando and O'Day are two of our better relievers.

That definitely wasn’t the A-team though. Neither Lowe or Kirkman have thrown a ton of innings. Kirkman has been pretty effective for the most part. Lowe we don’t really know a lot about because we haven’t seen enough of him (he was the other piece to the Cliff Lee deal and was on the DL until right at the very end of the season.)

For some reason, we hit top tier pitchers very well. Hung losses on every top pitcher this year. You saw the NLCS.

ok cool. and for my end, we used Casilla, Romo, Lopez, and Wilson (our top 4 relievers, who didn’t allow any runs).

Ramon Ramirez is teh SUCK, hence, 9th inning mop-up, and still can’t even mop up. He had a lucky year BABIP-wise. Bochy was throwing him a bone, and he didn’t do shit with it. I wouldn’t expect to see him again unless it’s mop up duty, and still, maybe not even at that. Mota is good, though he rarely pitches so you may not see him either.

Affeldt is a very good reliever too, though he is not of the Casilla/Lopez/Romo/Wilson caliber.

My thoughts:

1. CLIFF LEE! was due for that. I was scared it was going to happen last series against the Yankees but thankfully it didn’t. Better that he got it out of the way in Game 1 rather than later in the series. I’m not worried about him.

2. Vlad does not need to be in the outfield at all in SF. Strictly a PH for the away games in this series. Maybe he could play LF if we were in Fenway or something, but there is way too much ground to cover in SF. Murphy needs to get the start tomorrow in LF, and Cruz needs to be in RF.

3. Bullpen needs to get outs.

4. Defense needs to step up.

5. Too many LOB.

We just have to do a better job against their lineup. There’s no way they’re as good as we made them look tonight. And their pitching looked very hittable.

while I’m a Giants fan, I do have two things to say- first of all, we hit top pitchers very well because our team is free-swinging and great pitchers, they pound the zone. We also hit lefties very well. I wouldn’t assume Lee will dominate in Game 5, but we shall see. Timmeh wasn’t great tonight either (hit with too many damn balls, lol)

and second, yes you run a risk with Vlad in the OF, but remember that he is your cleanup hitter. The risk far outweights the reward, and I’m not saying that because he made two errors tonight- because your lineup is severly weakened without him at AT&T.

oh, and third- our lineup is not consistent, but they do have a ton of power. 1-7, they are all HR and XBH hit threats (except 8 hole hitter Renteria, playing with a torn bicep). The downside is we lack speed, but putting up alot of runs is not beyond our team- everyone got hot in July and we put up the most runs in the majors over that month. If you watched this team and all in the second half, you'd know how wrong your second point is.

Murphy has outplaying Vlad completely.

You wouldn’t be saying this if the shoe was on the other foot, its a very Baseball Tonight hot-air analysis. But then again you guys don’t really get the whole “9 guys who can all hit” concept.

by dolphinpuncher on Oct 28, 2010 12:44 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Our lineup and our OF

will be stronger with Murphy than Vlad….Vlad can ph, but his hitting has been very poor. If the Giants are free swinging they will have trouble with CJ

by mtobo on Oct 28, 2010 12:53 AM CDT up reply actions

So

1) We should throw crappy pitchers at the Giants in order to do well? That makes sense.
2) The lineup is not weakened without Vlad, especially since Murphy is better against righties than he is. Trust us, we remember he’s our “cleanup hitter” and it has caused us much pain (and some pleasure, true) in recent times.
3) Your lineup is good, underrated even, but not 11 runs good, and can be shut down, and I think that’s what txhc was talking about.

by Giant Space Ants on Oct 28, 2010 12:55 AM CDT up reply actions

Yes

Which is why the score was actually 7-6 Rangers. Our lineup was good but not 11 runs, so they took away 5 runs, and y’all ended up winning.

I think the point he was trying to make is that its very possible a guy like Jonathan Sanchez would be much more likely to dominate our lineup than a guy like Cliff Lee. Obviously Sanchez isnt a better pitcher, but dominant strike throwers lose some of their usual advantage when they face a lineup like ours.

Also, just because Vlad hits 4th, don’t assume that he’s the best option for that. Individually, there are a lot of power guys in the lineup who can be a bit streaky. Vlad is one and part of the reason why he stays there is because the manager is hoping for one of those hot streaks. The lineup is good enough for Murphy to play in Vlad’s place and still be productive, even if you want to use career numbers instead of seasonal ones. Murphy’s average defense makes it worth it.

God this is just dumb.

In order for it to even remotely make any sense you would have to put Borbon in either Center or Left and shade either Hamilton/Borbon over to right to make up for Vladdy’s lack of range. And putting Borbon in there at all doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me.

The outfield should be Murphy LF, Hamilton CF, and Cruz RF. In the pressers Wash said he was going to do what got us here. Well, that’s what fucking got us here Wash so do it. Suck it up and use Vladdy as a PH for the national league games, he can still be a weapon coming off the bench. It’s not like Murphy can’t hit or something, they’re playing against a righty, and it’s not like Vlad is lighting the world on fire right now anyway.

The decision isn’t that difficult.

Agreed.

IMO, the stats have shown that CJ is slightly better than Cain this season, but in all aspects, they’re basically equal.

CJ gets into trouble when he tries to nibble on the corners too much. If he’s getting the low and away strike, he’s almost unhittable. If the ump is not, he can tend to walk people, and that’s where he gets into trouble.

Last 5 Giant’s wins – losing pitchers:
Roy Halladay, Cole Hamels, Roy Oswalt, Ryan Madson, and Cliff Lee.

Must be because Giant’s offense sucks so bad.

My favorite picture on MCC todays was that meme with Cain asking “Guys, you are going to do that again tomorrow? Really? Really?”… Cain is not the luckiest one.

For a guy who has so much control, seeing him up in the zone was so infuriating. And no offense, but the Yankees lineup is much more of a threat offensively than the Giants. It would have made much more sense for him to have that game he had tonight in Yankees stadium than against the Giants.

I guess that’s what I’ve got to hope for; that this was an aberration. I feel like it was, but in a short series, you never know. Excited for game 2 tomorrow.

When the 49ers beat the Cowboys (“The Catch”) for the ’81 NFC Championship some of the Cowboy wives said that fans their would piss in cups and drop on them when they were exiting The Stick.

I've been to two games at Dodger.

Very pleasant experience. I was wearing a Pujols jersey and my Cardinals hat (we saw them play the Cardinals on our last day on mission trip). Everybody was very nice, which was weird cause we were in center field bleachers and I had heard stories about how rowdy it could get out there for fans of the visiting teams.

I don’t think it’s all that. It might have been a much better ballpark when the competition was the 60’s 70s era multiuse nightmare ballparks that were the norm. But with all the new ballparks, I don’t think it is all that great.

Took the words out my mouth..

I too had made my peace and was like we’ll get them tomorrow till I read the news just got me pissed. I hope someone steps in because this could cost us this series. Its just looking to be stubborn right now, I get that he believes in his players and look out for them, love that about wash. But this is a SEVEN GAME SERIES, you don’t have much room for error. There is no way he saw what Vlad did out there tonight and be so gung ho to put him back there…no way.

I would understand if Cantu was the alternative but Murphy has been great offensively and while he wont be winning any gg soon, he’s better then Vlad.

by Vicky on Oct 28, 2010 2:53 AM CDT up reply actions

I feel like tonight's game was the game

where everything just went horribly wrong, and you chalk it up to bad luck. Cliff wasn’t a robot, the Giants turned into steroids era Barry Bonds, Elvis made an error on a simple play, Ian did something stupid on the basepaths. Fine, whatever. At least the Rangers bats didn’t go completely cold. I still feel good about the rest of the series.

Then this Vlad news comes out. I realize it’s completely irrational, but I have this feeling that playing Vlad again out there is just pushing it, to the point of angering the baseball gods. I can imagine his outfield play being very catastrophic in a close game.

I’m over the top with it, probably, and sort of tipsy but I just really don’t want to see Vlad tomorrow, except to maybe pinch hit.

by Melanie on Oct 28, 2010 3:03 AM CDT up reply actions

well we can be irrational together then..

Cause I feel the same way, seems like we’re tempting fate. And for all the reasons you listed, we scored off their daunted bullpen, had 4er off Tim and had 7 runs in an otherwise crappy game. Our offense wasn’t dormant just a lot of stupid errors and little things that made you think k tonight just isnt our night we’ll be back tomorrow.

But you learn from your mistakes and imo Vlad being out there is one of them. Oh well hope we win despite all this, time will tell.

by cmkelly29 on Oct 28, 2010 9:05 AM CDT up reply actions

It really is...

This picture was from 1928. Frozen Indian scrotums were dominating the “non-swelling items” market at that time.

In October of that year, an Amish milkmaid by the name of Grunda Fung used a piece of frozen raw beef to heal the wounds on her face. Her husband, Tim Dickles had ferociously beat upon her brow many times. This guy was just an asshole.

Anyways, word got around.. “RAW BEEF HEALS.. INDIAN SACS NOT AS EFFECTIVE.”

In response, Native Americans began removing their own sacs at an insane pace. They flooded the market with their frozen beanbags. Nobody was buying.

Less than a year later… You guessed it. The great Stock Market crash of 1929. Depression era begins. Thanks to Grunda and a bunch of sac-less Indians.

well, this Yahoo article seems to at least leave the question up in the air, likes it's not a sure thing.
But if the Texas Rangers manager is experiencing doubts about his plan to keep Guerrero’s bat in the lineup, he didn’t own up to it after the 11-7 loss to the Giants in Game 1 of the World Series.
“No, I don’t,” Washington said when asked if he had to reconsider Guerrero playing the outfield. “A couple balls got by him.”
Actually, that would be quite a good reason to question the benefit of fielding a defense featuring a creaky-kneed 35-year-old manning San Francisco’s spacious triples alley.
But Washington also never said if Guerrero will be in the lineup for Thursday’s Game 2 and I just don’t see how they can again risk his defensive play in a crucial game that would figure to be a lot closer.

Today is the happiest I've ever been that I work at home

Not only do I have to hear that stupid question everyone at work has been asking me (that being – “do you have any extra World Series tickets?”), but this morning I just don’t want to answer “what the hell happened to the Rangers?”

If I did, I'd give em to you

over everyone who never expressed any interest all year long in going to a game.

ugh

already gotten it twice.

Did you watch the game? Did you see how the other team got more hits and made better plays in the field? That’s what happened. Idiots.

Giants fans were worse than NYC

I had a similar experience as Goet. Some relentless taunting of other Rangers fans led me to put some clown in headlock during the game

And after the game outside a group of punks were shoving fans leaving the game. I bodychecked the lead jackwad pretty hard just before 3 cops took them down

Some of the other Rangers fans near us said folks tried to start fights with them also.

No mercy tomorrow

Sheesh.

Glad I’m not there. I don’t like confrontation. That’s why I blog.

He took only one step and missed a ball that almost hit his glove

It wasn’t an automatic out, but I thought he should have had it. I think it’s a play that’s made by a 3B with good range.

No, the only 3B that could make that play is a tall, rangy 3B

like Rolen (and it’s not a play I would expect anybody to make).
