MLBTrade Rumors Free-Agent Predictions
So was checking out MLBTR this morning and came across these gems of predictions. Some strange, strange predictions in there as far as the Rangers go (Carl Pavano and Manny Ramirez). They all predict Cliff Lee! to go to the MFY of course but we all know that isn't going to happen. Some other interesting stuff in there as well.
To hit my 75 word limit, what is your prediction of Carl Crawford's contract (with whoever)? I'm going to say 5/45 million from the Angels.
edit: Yeah, 5/45 million was stupid. How about 6/80?

Dude
Your prediction is so low it looks at other predictions and realizes It’s buried in the earth’s crust.

Lee
Those analysis who think that Lee would go to the Yanks are just kidding themselves. The Yanks ship is on the downward slide and the Rangers look to be the team to beat for the next 5 years atleast. Cliff Lee to sign with a sinking ship would be dumb and senseless.
Pay attention dude its a metaphor
The yankees are done can’t you read the handwriting in the wind; haven’t we beat that with a dead stick? Do you follow where I’m coming from? Cliff wont sign there, it’ll be a cold day in January when that happens! Now that the ball is in our court, let’s go for the touchdown. Everyone pair up in threes, then line up in a circle alphabetically by height so we can all march to Arkansas and protest this.
You have a twenty foot putt for the win
Now swing out behind the three point line and swoosh it!
"I support you, Wash; I’ve always supported you," Young said

well, last year they won the World Series
this year, they were awful and only made it to the ALCS. That’s a massive downward slide
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
Meahwhile the Rangers didn't make the postseason in '09
And made the WS in ’10. That means they could win it in ’11, restablish the Mayan Civilization (saving the world in the process) in ’12, hook up with the Supercomputer and make it sentient in ’13, use their army of nanobots to reestablish peace on Earth in ’14, make first contact with aliens in ’15. and use their army of nanobots to destroy the aliens and restablish peace in the Milky Way in ’16.
I don’t know what happens after that, because I’m only willing to go 6 years with Cliff.

The people who believe that Lee is going to NY are making the false assumption that Texas won't be able to outbid the Yankees.
The assumption is false because, as we all know, Texas doesn’t have to beat the Yank’s offer, they just have to match it. The difference in tax rate will automatically make the Rangers’ offer superior.
That being said, it’s not like the Yankees didn’t win the World Series last year and advance to the ALCS this year season. It’s not unfair to say that they would have won the series with Lee on board. They’re still very much contenders, and are likely to remain so for the foreseeable future.
Bottomless pockets and a strong farm system are nothing to sniff at.
To answer the OP, Crawford ends up with the Angels for something close to what Carlos Lee got when he left here. 6 years, $100M. It’s a vast overpayment for a guy with a career .781 OPS, but reputation is on his side. As far as I’m concerned, the Angels are welcome to him.
who is his agent?
is the agent looking out for the player or his bottom line. i’m sure agents convince players that New York is better because it’s the highest offer. and they are open to more endorsements like the awesome taco bell commercials.
Agents always look out for the player
It just so happens that the bottom line is usually what the player wants
Six of one, half a dozen of another.
Texas says: “LOWER TAXES!!!”
New York says: “MORE ENDORSEMENTS!!!”
Both are valid, but only one represents guaranteed money. And it’s not as if Lee will have much trouble getting endorsements in Texas. He’s been the most talked about player in the game for a year now.

Prove it.
And it’s not as if Lee will have much trouble getting endorsements in Texas.
Quit speculating.
LOL
Love reading that in this particular post. Well done, sir.

It doesn't matter whether Lee signs in Texas with regards to taxes...
He lives in Arkansas. He pays Arkansas income taxes. He also pays income taxes for every state in which he plays during the year. So unless he moves and establishes residency in Texas(which I doubt since he didn’t do that when he played for Cleveland) he’s still paying taxes.
If he signed a 6 year deal here he would almost assuredly establish residency here
The difference between Arkansas and Ohio state taxes may not be enough to do so but since Texas has zero state tax it would be worth it to do
Can we stop with this tax bullshit
Until some player takes less money to come here it doesn’t exist ok
Players who make that kind of money could probably care less about taxes. Their accountants and such probably care but they themselves don’t give a flying fuck. And their agents damn sure don’t care.
yes
because someone is going to come out and say that is the reason.

Rick Perry already stated the fact to Jon Stewart

(Husband) "Hmm... well, porn, I guess."
I never said anything about taking less money, and anyone who does is being foolish.
It’s about $120M from Texas being worth more than $120M from New York. If it comes down to matching offers, Texas wins. If the Rangers low ball or blink, they probably lose, but I doubt that will happen.

It is also important to note the Yankees bid will be affected by the Luxury Tax
The Cliff Lee deal will increase the amount they pay into the Luxury Tax pot. This may affect their overall bid.
The truth is, we don’t know where Cliff Lee’s interests lie. It may be a while before we know. For us to say that it is or isn’t about the money is foolish. Signing with the Rangers appears to have some side perks (lack of a state income tax, proximity to Arkansas, familiarity with players/staff) but we don’t know how much this will affect the process.
Show me someone who took a smaller contract amount due to it being "worth more" due to taxes?
It doesn’t happen especially when you get in the hundreds of million of dollars.
That argument may work on middle class people who have to choose between a 50,000 a year job in Dallas or a 60,000 dollar a year job in NY. Cost of living, taxes, etc all come into play at that level.
But at 20+ million dollars a year it doesn’t matter.
Texas needs to beat NYs offer and leave nothing to doubt if we want Lee. Don’t just match it or go slightly lower and use the tax angle and say its worth more. Beat the motherfuckers just like we did on the field a few weeks ago.
Crawford
6/100 from the Nats. They need a quality defender on that team and they have moeny to spend.
Go Rice Owls!
I'd love this
if he didn’t go to the Angels. I’d like it if Soriano didn’t either.

This would be awesome, actually.

No.
He’s a cancer and the guy can’t stay healthy. Or sane. Manny would also have trouble with his defense in the Dr. Pepper Park. let alone the actual ball park.

I don't usually by into the clubhouse cancer stuff
However I think this argument is legit here. The Rangers seem like a team that would seriously take this into consideration. They are very much a “gel” team. While it was fun to watch, I’m not sure I like that as a strategy.
you don't agree that players like Padilla and Ponson are clubhouse cancers?
(Wife) "So what do you want to watch on the T.V.? UFC or porn?"
(Husband) "Hmm... well, porn, I guess."
I didn't articulate that well.
I understand that people are bad in the clubhouse. I just don’t think it matters that much. I think Manny Ramirez might not be a great clubhouse guy but that it will minimally affect the overall performance on the club. What is much, much more important, in my opinion, is there production. Manny’s bad clubhouse vibe at most might cost the club 1 win over the course of the season. His actual performance on the field on the other hand might be worth 5-10 wins, and I’m not talking WAR.
I have already placed MY in the DH category for the next 4 years.
Or however much longer that contract lasts.
"I don't really like pitchers." - Nelson Cruz
It's through 2013.
And that would require them to go out and get a third-baseman, and convince Young to agree to move (actually, switch the order). Although Harold Reynolds told me Young volunteered to move to Third for Elvis while saving a bus full of children from falling off a cliff and into a bald eagles nest, I’m not sure he’s gonna move this year for anyone other than Beltre.

He didn't play it in the NL either.
Badum-ching
Frankly, while I actually don’t have a problem with Manny, I’d rather leave it open for a rotating DH that many here have already discussed. However, Ron would only do something like that in magical gumdrop land, so I’d be OK with Manny. Not the first choice though, and I doubt they’d give him what he wants in monetary value anyways.

I find it odd that anyone would predict De La Rosa
signing with the Pirates or Royals. He’s probably one of the better free agent pitchers out there right now (not saying all that much), and for him to sign with either of those teams would be ridiculous.
Why?
Remember Chan Ho and Millwood. It probably seemed ridiculous they would sign with a team like the Rangers but they did. If the Royals sign him it would signal to me they are trying to trade Greinke and De La Rosa would be the “ace”.
