Happy birthday, Jason Grilli
Happy birthday to Jason Grilli, who turns 34 today.
Grilli was the #4 overall pick of the San Francisco Giants in 1997, between Troy Glaus and Vernon Wells. He bounced around for a while until sticking in the majors as a reliever a few years ago.
Grilli was acquired by the Rangers from the Colorado Rockies in June, 2009, and did a decent job in a middle relief role for Texas.
He missed all of 2010 after having surgery in the spring to repair a quadriceps tendon.

Always seemed like a nice guy
I hated seeing him go, but it just wasn’t meant to be
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Wasn't there a game last season (09)
when Doug Mathis started, and Grilli closed it out, getting the W for the Rangers? Afternoon game, i think.

Speaking of Vernon Wells...
…did you know he and Michael Young are friends?
Did you know he went to high school in Arlington?
Did you know that his father is a semi-famous local sports artist?

He's friends with Michael Young!!?
Wow. Did he go to his wedding?

What team did Grilli end up striking a deal with last season?
I remember the whole twitter mystery but never followed up heh
!!!
According to Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun, the Blue Jays have inquired about the availability of Zack Greinke.
The Royals are reportedly looking for two “can’t-miss prospects” in exchange for their ace right-hander.

When I think of Grilli
I think of Jamey Wright and Chris Ray, pitchers that had really impressive stints with the Rangers, even though they shouldn’t have been any good.
Wright was actually pretty good his second year here.
Grilli has been pretty solid since he got moved to reliever.
Ray, however, was not impressive at all.
Circle of Trust?
If I had a gun to my head and had to pick one pitcher to pitch a game to save my life.... I'd pick 1999 Rick Helling.

Ok.
But Grilli was legitimately good. Grilli had a a 4.78 ERA but a 3.74 FIP.
Wright definitely fit the bill his first year here, though.
There are two Jamey Wright performances that will forever stick in my mind
A road game in Boston in ’07(?) where he got the start and pitched well but we lost 2-1 because a run scored before the third out of an inning was recorded, a weird play at third by Vazquez I think
and then Photo Day in ‘08 when we were beating Oakland 7-3, until he came in out of the bullpen like on the 7th and gave the game away – A’s came back and won it
Also, we should note Grili for being injured on Newberg Night '09, which lead to the purchase and 25-man debut of Neftali Feliz
And the glorious moment of Feliz jogging onto the field right in front of us.
And then all the strikeouts and shutdown innings and stuff, too.
