I didn't take it that way.

Even if there is no glass, the Rangers could still compete for this division next year. And we’ve seen that our FO is opportunistic and not willing to sit on their hands; they can improve this club in the regular season too.

by jam0152 on Nov 19, 2010 9:35 AM CST up reply actions

That's the silver lining.

Depressing as this scenario is, it doesn’t really lay the groundwork for the A’s and Angels to simply run away with the division.

For example, I think there could be arguments that even with Beltre and DeJesus, and even if Carter and Barton have strong seasons, and even if Iwakuma is legit in his first year, the A’s should still not expected to be much better than a 90-92 win team. And similar lines could be taken on the Angels, even with Crawford and Soriano and a full season of Morales and Haren.

The real question, then, is whether the Rangers go into next season with a 90-92 win expectation.

by Josh Garoon on Nov 19, 2010 10:00 AM CST up reply actions

Lots of ifs.

If Ian/Josh/Nelly play 80% of their games next year. And CJ and Colby don’t regress too much. And Dutch takes a big step forward. And Vlad doesn’t completely run out of gas on us. And Moreland stabilizes the 1b position. If those things happen, I can see the Rangers winning 90 again next year without further additions to the team.

by jam0152 on Nov 19, 2010 10:10 AM CST up reply actions

Exactly.

There’s also the question of Face: was 2010 the beginning of a steady decline, or will he regress back toward his career average OBP in 2011? Those 20 points at the top of the line-up could make a small but significant difference…

by Josh Garoon on Nov 19, 2010 10:18 AM CST up reply actions

The Rangers will almost certainly have to add another starting pitcher

The quality of that pitcher plays a big role in what you would project the Rangers to be next year. I suppose the same could be said for Catcher if they bring in Martinez.

Also, I think it’s reasonable to hope for progression from Elvis, possibly Moreland and Borbon as well.

If CLee doesn’t want to be a part of that, let him go to NYC because we’ll be set to win it all in the next two years with or without him.

Yep..

I fully admit to drinking the kool aid when it comes to this man lol. And I cant even fathom him playing somewhere else but the last week or so I’m starting to think of that very real possibility. And yeah the Rangers are my team but not only did we beat the Yankees, we destroyed them in just about every facet of the game. Like one of the ny papers said, it felt like a 6 game sweep. We have a bright future and with him are contenders to win it all within the next couple yrs.

But if we go after the few pieces that we need and Cliff still blinks then well we all know its not about winning cause this team is already a winner. Let’s not forget the questions the Yanks still have in their pitching depth, their best starter was Pettite and they’re not sure he’s coming back! Its not to say Cliff is going to be poor if he stays here, its safe to say the Rangers will give him something within the 20-23mil atleast 5 yrs range for sure.

STAY CLIFF.

by Vicky on Nov 19, 2010 9:53 AM CST up reply actions

Supposedly he's not signing until early December.

We need to go about our bidness like he’s not coming back and assume that the MF Yankees are going to moneywhip the thing with their 12 pounder.

Don Draper taught us this past fall that you don’t want to reek of desperation and that’s what we will be if Lee gives us the Heisman.

That’s not necessarily a late 90s dynasty they have in NYC right now….it’s an older team and very susceptible to the same mid to late 60s crash that happened to Yankees because they all got old at the same time.

They’re going to be pretty good in 2011 but then it starts to get dicey because other than Cano, they don’t have any young, proven major league stars. It’s gonna be ugly in NY in 2-3 years (Jeter at 39 years old playing SS next to a 38 year old ARod?) …does Lee want to be a part of that?

by BigGuns on Nov 19, 2010 9:15 AM CST up reply actions

It is about the money but it's also about the winning.

If it was only about the money, the Washington Nats would have a shot.

We can “sell” against the MF Yankees without directly throwing them under the bus. We live in a wonderful area to raise a family and Lee will be rich, close to Arkansas and playing for a winning team.

If it’s more important for him to get 7/170, that’s what’s most important to him but we’d be better off without him.

Move forward as an organization, don’t bog down waiting for Lee and hopefully he comes back but always remember that hope is not and never was a strategy.

Ryan's tactic

I like Ryan’s (and the FO) take on this process. They’ve sort of painted Lee and the Yankees into a corner. I don’t know Lee, but he seems like he’s on the less hardcore money-only side (if there is one) for the average player, and he won’t want to be painted as being a complete mercenary.

With the Yanks not even posturing against Ryan’s comments, it’s now ‘out there’ that if Lee does sign with the Yanks, it’s only b/c they offered more money and money was the only important factor.

I still think there’s a pretty good chance that it is only about the money. But Ryan has made his play to force other issues into the picture.

I like it

the simple fact that a part of this is about the money is unfathomable to me

it’s not like the Yankees are offering a billion and we’re gonna offer league minimum…the money is gonna be somewhat close, and unless he goes on an MC Hammer-esque spending streak, it’s gonna be more than he’ll ever use. Why not pick the team that has the better chance of being good for a while? Is he not able to see past a year or so when the core of that team is too old to compete and their farm team is nearly depleted because of them having to feed the beast every single year?

it is obvious that the Rangers could use a 4th starter upgrade. Either Hunter or Holland need to step up, or the Rangers need outside help. Lee, Greinke, Lewis, and Wilson would match up so well with any pitching staff out there in a playoff series. The idea of having either Colby or CJ as a fourth starter makes my mouth water.

I mean, if the Rangers truly believe their warm, welcoming, Texas environment is playing in their favor with Lee, then you don’t tell the media that the guy’s not your top priority (even if he isn’t). Especially if the top priority is making a deal for a guy who may not be able to refuse the trade.

for the ‘low chip stack’ to start the bidding … let the Yanks flex their muscle and show how desperate (if at all) they are to get this done quickly

Texas has plenty of chips to play with, but they don’t have more than the Yanks. I think it’s smart to let them make the first move.

Yeah go with your absolute best offer and make the Yanks overpay..

IMO dont wait for the yanks to beat your ‘first’ offer which they surely will. If he still goes then wish him well but let NY pay CC type money if they have too. I know they have the bottom less pockets but I still see them paying for this soon.

by Vicky on Nov 19, 2010 10:35 AM CST up reply actions

but you know

that the Yanks can beat your best offer, so why put it out there for them to trump

Let them make their bid, and then decide if you want to match. If the offers are somewhat equal, chances are Lee stays in Texas

If the Yanks then ramp up their bid and Lee takes it, then you walk away knowing that was all about money and you start plan B

Because,

even the Yankees have limits. Making them bid an extra year or two at an extra few million per year will help your odds in the future of being able to sign somebody you’re interested in…especially when you account for luxury tax.

You still get to the same place if you let them bid first, rather than starting the bidding

It’s not like the Rangers are going to let the Yanks offer 4 or 5 years and not make a seriously competitive offer

If they start the bidding, they are still going to have to come over the tip with the really long offer to beat the Rangers … and thus be compromised as you said.

And if you don’t start the bidding, you can get somewhat of a glimpse into just how desperate the Yanks are earlier in the process

Never been to Shreveport to play poker

But in many ways, there are similarities to the strategy

There are lot of folks who agree with your position. But I’m of the opinion that you don’t show all your strength right at the beginning.

The Rangers will make their max offer for Lee. But as I see it, it can only help them to be patient

Even if the Yanks fire right away with 7 years and $25/year, then the Rangers know better what they have to contned with and they can make the creative offer that is warranted in that situation

More like business than poker really … I just used cards as the metaphor b/c it was easy … if you know you are going to be outbid, then wait to see that bid and try to come up with something suitable but creative that keeps you in the running

Go with a 6 year contract and make the Yankees beat it. If the Yankees offer six then the Rangers have to beat it. Does anyone want to take the risk of a 7 year contract at that price for a 31 year old? I am just assuming he is gonna get around $23M per.

by who's standards

before last year, the Rangers haven’t gotten much from the DH slot
While you can knock Victor’s throwing all day, he’s solid with the bat and he’d bring a selectivity to the lineup that it sorely needs

by CO Ranger on Nov 19, 2010 10:35 AM CST up reply actions

Sure, but at what price?

There are several DH types on the market cheaper. Tying up that much money for that many years isn’t much different than signing Vlad long term. If Martinez isn’t the primary catcher he’s not worth anywhere near that money.

by t ball on Nov 19, 2010 10:43 AM CST up reply actions

Price and Years

I’d say years is the biggest question they have with an offer to Victor

And I would imagine that he’d be the primary C like Josh was the primary CF’er. He’d play there a lot, take some time at DH and spot at 1B against really tough lefties

Years 1 and 2 of the deal look really good; year 3 will start to degrade, and it’s years 4 and 5 if signed that would make him as the primary DH the question

by CO Ranger on Nov 19, 2010 11:05 AM CST up reply actions

There is no bigger difference in positional adjustment

than that between Catcher and DH.

In other words, what makes a good hitter for a catcher is dramatically different in comparison to what makes a good hitter for a DH.

by Rodney on Nov 19, 2010 10:50 AM CST up reply actions

But, he's a good hitter for any position

Especially for this team

A hitter that can live in the middle of the lineup and strikes out about as much as he walks would be a boon for the whole lineup

I’m not saying that having him as the primary DH in years 4 or hopefully not but possibly 5 would be a good thing, per se. But the marginal improvement he brings to our particular lineup would be huge.

by CO Ranger on Nov 19, 2010 11:07 AM CST up reply actions

He is a bit above average DH currently.

His .360 wOBA would have had him 7th among DH’s with 250 PA’s last year.

Then you get to factor in the decline in skills due to age which is likely to be more rapid due to playing as a catcher for so many years.

It’s not that he’s a bad player, he is quite good when he’s playing as a catcher. It’s that as he ages, he will have to spend more and more time DH’ing where he will look more and more like an average player getting paid like an above average one.

If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?
JD: Eddie Guardado.

by GhettoBear04 on Nov 19, 2010 11:16 AM CST up reply actions

so it comes down to

whether you value the rather large marginal upgrade of our offense he represents in the first 2 years of the contract over the probability that he’ll be an average DH (and perhaps sometimes C and 1B) in the last 2 years of the deal

And while they say they are pursuing both, Martinez may in fact be part of their plan B if Lee goes to NY … namely: get a better offense

by CO Ranger on Nov 19, 2010 11:19 AM CST up reply actions

But you also have to account for his defense,

which we have trouble doing.

While the goal is to accumulate talented players at every position possible, I’m just not sure that Martinez is the best investment. I would rather have an average catcher with great defensive skills and somebody like Adrian Beltre or Adam Dunn, who seem more likely to provide value commensurate with their salaries over the life of the contract.

by Rodney on Nov 19, 2010 11:27 AM CST up reply actions

But you have to also look at the specifics of our 'predicament'

The Rangers are going to get less than average power from 3B and 1B next year, so the offense needs to be upgraded at some position

I like the idea of Beltre, but it’s just not realistic for us right now. Dunn would change the scenario at 1B, but then you have a somewhat wasted resource in Moreland

For what they are working with next year, being able to upgrade offense from the C position is the quickest and most efficient way to improve the offense

And looking more specifically at the defensive change from last year to the coming season, for all the knocks on him, the only thing that looks sub par from Martinez behind the plate would be his throwing – at 24%, which is what we got from Moline anyway. I haven’t watched him play regularly, but is there any way that Martinez is less mobile behind the plate than Benjie was (or Treanor, really)

Considering what we ran out there last year, Martinez is not going to be a noticeable down-grade in our C defense, is he?

by CO Ranger on Nov 19, 2010 11:39 AM CST up reply actions

Martinez is realistic, but Beltre isn't?

While I like Moreland, there are enough PA’s to go around if you bring in Dunn, especially because it means you wouldn’t resign Vlad.

Martinez is likely to be a downgrade in catcher defense from Molina, based on what I’ve read about them.

If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?
JD: Eddie Guardado.

by GhettoBear04 on Nov 19, 2010 11:43 AM CST up reply actions

we all know why Beltre is not realistic

If you want to ignore that fact and think the Michael Young will and should move to DH or 1B this year, okay … I can’t see them trying to do that this winter

And in all honesty, I don’t see Beltre is a guaranteed upgrade over Young anyway, even this year (he’s only had 2 good seasons on offense), not to mention what happens in year 5 or 6 of that deal … you would have to outbid the A’s current offer to get him

Also, I don’t think there’s any way that Martinez defense behind the plate could be assessed as much worse than Molina. I have not read anything of the like, and I’d love to hear a scout’s take on that subject – Martinez is still a pretty athletic dude – Molina is … not

Last year,

I don’t like the 5 year deal thing and I am a bit skeptical of that. But Adrian Beltre is likely to be worth the annual salary I’ve seen thrown out even if he doesn’t hit that well..which would not necessarily be a given.

You say he’s been in consistent, but over the past 5 years, the only year he had a wRC+ under 108 was when he put up an 88 the year that he was injured (one of his testicles was spiked and ruptured). that he isn’t being brought in for part of the future, he’s being brought in to help the team win in the next few years. You’ll probably have to take a bad year at the end of that contract as a result, but that’s the cost of FA. As long as he isn’t a primary, 100+ game catcher here, then he probably won’t be breaking down anytime in the next few years.

And you’re still talking about a good bat that can DH, play 1B, and play C. That’s a huge addition for this team that lacks depth at those spots and would definitely help us a lot in the playoffs.

Yep

Parks addressed this on last week’s episode of RFRL… essentially, good prospects sought elite money this year because the crop was so diluted.
Thankfully, the 14 and 15 year old grouping makes the next two years look very promising. I’m guffawing a little bit as I type that.

Good piece, Garoon

I, for one, would never do this, though.

In a parking lot outside Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, feral Rangers fans build a towering bonfire out of Cliff Lee Rangers jerseys.

Nevermind the fact that I don’t own a Cliff Lee Jersey, but if he signs with the Yanks, I just have to tip my cap to him, and simply start to hate him like I do every other Yankee. Thanks for getting us to the World Series, Cliff, now go fuck yourself.

Yep, it's not like the Rangers offered him an $18 million per year extension that he turned down.

Or said that he was tired of playing with 24 kids. Cliff came in and did what he was supposed to do. He pitched well and fit right into the clubhouse. If he leaves for the Yankees for more money, I would not blame him. I would be disappointed, but I would not want to burn his jersey or anything.

In a heartbeat for a few reasons.

1) Window for winning is open for 2-3 years, Greinke and his contract fit that window.
2) Greinke has proven the ability to pitch in the AL and is a mutual fit if we sign Lee.
Less so IF Greinke has to be #1.

Well thats an interesting spin.

I think the Rangers would be better served by using their financial flexibility by signing Lee and trading for Greinke than any other option I have heard to date. As far as prospects goes, the Royals will get a nice package but not all of the top talent. Is there any current Ranger contract that goes out beyond 3 years?

You can only be young once but can be immature forever!

by Bigfan16 on Nov 19, 2010 11:44 AM CST up reply actions

Just the young guys, though extensions may be coming.

That wasn’t me arguing against trading for Greinke, just arguing against the poor logic of “we’re going to suck in 3 years so we should trade away the players who are likely to make us not suck in 3 years.”

Regarding Greinke, it just depends on cost. It’s one thing to trade Smoak plus some mid-tier guys; Greinke may very well cost too much of the top end of the Rangers prospect chart. You have to be able to walk away.

ASSUME that the Rangers sign Lee and

have some money left. Would you prefer signing Vmart to a four year deal or giving up the prospects and having Greinke for two?

Ok I know I am giving you and either or when that is not he case but what is your preference?

Hmmm...

They money is about the same, though more years to the lesser player.

I would have to know the prospects going, but I guess I would lean towards Greinke.

Really, I would rather sign Beltre, improve multiple positions and keep the prospects.

Defensively at 3B for sure

But I think his bat is a bit of mirage … definitely not consistent production

And Young at DH would not be an offensive improvement over what we got this past year, though he would at 1B (damn that was painful to write)

Dude, context.

Yes, his wOBA dipped below .310 a couple times over the last seven years. A couple. Switching from Safeco to RBiA for a righty, though, would typically take that close to, if not better than, league average. Or, pretty close to what MY put up last year. And those are his down years, his typical year and career rate is solidly above league average with home games in Safeco and Dodgers Stadium.

Come on.

by philkid3 on Nov 19, 2010 2:40 PM CST up reply actions

I hear you

But there’s also the context of the fact that MY is sitting on that position till forcibly moved

And I know the stats you are quoting are more indicative of actual performance, but we are talking about the guy who never posted an OBP north of .330 besides last year and his last year in LA

I’m not as confident that we’d see enough of the 2004 and 2010 seasons from a guy playing at 32 and above – are you?

then, there’s the context of the contract he’s going to receive as well, but we’re not talking about that right now

By games played, I’d assume it was 2008. He looked pretty lost at the plate that first year in Seattle.

If we got the Road guy/Boston guy, I see what you’re saying that’s he’s a much more valuable guy than Young at the position.

Then a gang of hulking, barely sentient giant men go out there, pick everyone up and reposition them at the corresponding opposite side of the field.

If they had enough fucking room to play

then they wouldn’t have to turn the field around for the offenses so players wouldn’t have to fear for their safety when trying to make a play in the endzone. They don’t have enough fucking room to play the game how it’s supposed to be played. It’s stupid.

You don’t think so; we differ in opinions. It happens.

I think the issue is

that if the way to play the game at Wrigley is to follow these rules, but as a result of these rules, nobody loses any advantages, then you play the game at Wrigley with these rules. And nobody is going to complain about it.

Put it another way – if someone 9 months ago said we can play a game at Wrigley but can only use 1 endzone rules, they’d still be playing this game and lots of people would be upset if that was the reason they decided not to play the game at Wrigley. I could see players, coaches not liking 1 endzone rules but the vast vast majority of fans and AD people would want it.

He started in CF for Milwaukee in 2007 but only 8 games since then. His 2007 performance wasn’t bad, though.

Being able to use one roster spot for a platoon CF and backup 2b/SS/3b would be huge.

I wouldn’t want to see any money spent on a RP, but I wouldn’t mind an interesting NRI option brought in or maybe a cheap veteran (maybe something a little less than Darren Oliver money).
