Josh Hamilton Named A.L. MVP

As we hoped, Josh Hamilton of the Texas Rangers has been named the American League Most Valuable Player for 2010.

Hamilton picked up 22 of 28 first place votes, with second place finisher Miguel Cabrera picking up 5 first place votes, and Jose Bautista, who finished 4th, getting 1 first place vote.  Robinson Cano finished in third place.

Paul Konerko finished 5th, Evan Longoria 6th, and Carl Crawford 7th in the balloting.

The only other Ranger to be named on a ballot was Vladimir Guerrero, who got two 7th place votes, one 8th place vote, four 9th place votes, and three 10th place votes.

Oddly enough, the highest ranked pitcher was Rafael Soriano, with C.C. Sabathia finishing right behind him.  Felix Hernandez was the only other pitcher to receive votes, and finished well behind Soriano and Sabathia.

UPDATE -- Correction of the above -- Joakim Soria also received a vote.

Young was VERY clutchy this year. .355/.379/.533 with runners in scoring position. 4th in league in win probability added, 14th in situational wins. That’s worth something. Not a 6th-place vote, in my opinion, but something.

I doubt very seriously Minnesota wins the division without him. Does he deserve MVP status? No, but he carried that team which lost Mauer or Morneau for extended periods. It ain’t as crazy as it seems.

I don't think that is fair

Murphy was great for two months but the Rangers win the division anyways.

Delmon Young was solid exactly when the Twins needed him and they probably would have been caught if not for his outburst (and Danny Valencia as well). Everyone around here, I live in Minnesota, was raving about Delmon Young for the better part of the year. The Twins needed him sorely and he produced. His numbers really fell off at the end of the season when the Twins were pretty comfortably on top.

He was actually almost as valuable than Vlad in '10, 2.6 to 2.5 WAR, in just 84 games.

And this from fg:

Not a single team put up a better mark than Ordonez’s .375 wOBA, and only the Orioles (Luke Scott), Red Sox (David Ortiz), Twins (Jim Thome), and Rangers (Vladimir Guerrero) equaled or bettered Ordonez’s +21 run offensive projection from CHONE.

Plus, while he is not good in the OF any longer, he sucks wayyyyy worse than Vlad. I am kind of getting on board with bringing him in, and he costs no draft pick.

what about the "window"

Take Lee as great for 2 years, good for 2, and mediocre for 2. This still allows for a real chance at the title for 3-4 years with the likes of Perez and Feliz set to make an impact in the rotation from 2012-2014

2010 Texas Rangers: AL Champs (winners of the only real league in the majors)

by Baseball North on Nov 23, 2010 2:36 PM CST up reply actions

That is a nice window

but there is also a window that doesn’t involve Cliff Lee that pretty much everyone knew existed before this last season started and before Lee was acquired.

This team doesn’t have to have Cliff Lee to win. They won the division essentially without him this year. He was a great asset in the playoffs; and clearly he’d be awesome to have. But the team doesn’t NEED Cliff Lee.

Go Rice Owls!

by JBImaknee on Nov 23, 2010 2:39 PM CST up reply actions

right, but a non-Cliff Lee team is still relying on hope

hope that Perez, Feliz, Holland, and the Erlins can become FOTR type pitchers in the time that the CJ, Lewis and the offensive core are still intact.

2010 Texas Rangers: AL Champs (winners of the only real league in the majors)

by Baseball North on Nov 23, 2010 2:42 PM CST up reply actions

certainly

but a just-signed-Cliff Lee-for-7/140 team is relying on hope that no major pieces need replacing, because there won’t be any money in the piggy bank for a long, long time with that type of deal. There is hope involved no matter what happens.

I think people are forgetting that there are significant risks involved with signing Lee as well. Cliff Lee probably reduces uncertainty if he signs for something like 4/95. He increases uncertainly, dramatically so in 2015-2017, if he’s signed to a longer term or larger deal.

Go Rice Owls!

by JBImaknee on Nov 23, 2010 3:00 PM CST up reply actions

Sometimes they hit the ball...sometimes they wouldn't hit the ball.

Sometimes the ball come right at ya. Right into your eyes. And the thing about a ball is she’s got lifeless seams. Red seams. Like a doll’s seams. When she comes at ya, she doesn’t even seem to be livin…till she hits ya, and those red seams roll over white. Then you hear that terrible high-pitched screamin’. The plate turns red, and despite all your poundin’ and your hollerin’ those other players come in and… they rip you to pieces. Anyway, we delivered the go-ahead run.

Thinking of Hamilton

scoring from 2nd base on Vlads infield hit may go down as my most favorite play ever. The guy had Bo Jackson speed that game.

by lost in space on Nov 23, 2010 4:11 PM CST reply actions

That game was probably the best non-post season game of the year

Hamilton’s two great defensive plays, home run, daring base running, and 4 hits were off the charts. And it ended with a Cruz missile.

can’t go wrong there.

No.

List balloting is vastly superior.

It maybe doesn’t have to be 10, but that’s not a big deal. It just wastes voters’ time.

Brian Kenny is on the radio arguing the writers didn't look deep enough in the MVP balloting and that's why they went with Hamilton.

Saying they look at the wrong stats.

He says he has sabermetrics on his side and would vote for Cano. The deepest he went was OPS and home/road splits.

Yup.

Some "sabermetrics"

He let people call in.

I wanted to desperately, but I was stuck in a snow storm with a dead phone. I’m angry none of you did.

His callers were: a guy who said Sabathia because “you throw all those stats out the window” and if you take him out of the rotation the Yankees don’t make the playoffs; a guy who said Cano and gave no reason; a guy who said Hamilton because he’s a rah rah leader who helped the team through bankruptcy; and a guy who said Hamilton because his team made the playoffs.

BR war looks differently

1. (6) 6.0 Josh Hamilton, Texas
2. (3) 6.9 Miguel Cabrera, Detroit
3. (T4) 6.1 Robinson Cano, New York
4. (T7) 5.6 Jose Bautista, Toronto

9. (T4) 6.1 Adrian Beltre, Boston
