Josh Hamilton Named A.L. MVP
Hamilton picked up 22 of 28 first place votes, with second place finisher Miguel Cabrera picking up 5 first place votes, and Jose Bautista, who finished 4th, getting 1 first place vote. Robinson Cano finished in third place.
Paul Konerko finished 5th, Evan Longoria 6th, and Carl Crawford 7th in the balloting.
The only other Ranger to be named on a ballot was Vladimir Guerrero, who got two 7th place votes, one 8th place vote, four 9th place votes, and three 10th place votes.
Oddly enough, the highest ranked pitcher was Rafael Soriano, with C.C. Sabathia finishing right behind him. Felix Hernandez was the only other pitcher to receive votes, and finished well behind Soriano and Sabathia.
UPDATE -- Correction of the above -- Joakim Soria also received a vote.

Delmon Young got a 4th place vote
scottrlucas Depending on source/methodology, Delmon Young’s WAR ranked 11th, 12th, or 17th. That’s just on the Twins, not the American League.
It was from Evan Grant.
My ballot: Hamilton, Cabrera, Cano, Konerko, Crawford, Delmon Young, Jose Bautista, Adrian Beltre, Vlad, Rafael Soriano.

In Evan's defense...
Young was VERY clutchy this year. .355/.379/.533 with runners in scoring position. 4th in league in win probability added, 14th in situational wins. That’s worth something. Not a 6th-place vote, in my opinion, but something.

Young kept Minn in first for 2 months (figuratively)
I doubt very seriously Minnesota wins the division without him. Does he deserve MVP status? No, but he carried that team which lost Mauer or Morneau for extended periods. It ain’t as crazy as it seems.

I don't think that is fair
Murphy was great for two months but the Rangers win the division anyways.
Delmon Young was solid exactly when the Twins needed him and they probably would have been caught if not for his outburst (and Danny Valencia as well). Everyone around here, I live in Minnesota, was raving about Delmon Young for the better part of the year. The Twins needed him sorely and he produced. His numbers really fell off at the end of the season when the Twins were pretty comfortably on top.

I'd say Hamilton has gotten off easy
of course, he didn’t serve a prison sentence
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
Hamilton hurt himself and his family as a result
As far as I’m concerned, if his family has forgiven him, why should the public feel differently?
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
"I am one of the biggest Texas Ranger fans out there but I'm also one of the smartest. Deal with it."
-The Outlaw
Agree in a big way
they both screwed up big time, but the way in which they accomplished this is massively different, and that changes the perception of the situation
Josey Wales is stupid
No way
Hamilton had to work like a dog to get back to where he was.
He has a good support system, sure, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t have to work a ton
I'm not saying he didn't have to work hard
and get forgiveness from his family and friends etc. I’m responding about the public opinion, in which, he has been held up as a role model. The court of public opinion has been generous with Hamilton.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
yeah
but only because the first real exposure the court had to hamilton was the story of redemption. He already had some sobriety skins on the wall when he was introduced to the public and he really seemed like he was owning his problems from the past and working through them.
I don’t think Hamilton was getting any favors.
Well when you preach to kids
to stay off of drugs and not repeat your mistakes that nearly destroyed your life, you tend to be looked at as a role model. Ever see a public speaker talk to an elementary or middle school who didn’t go through some issues at one point in their life?

Really?
I would bet a lot of money that he will never run a dog fighting industry again. Seems like something pretty easily left behind, as opposed to crack, which is kind of hard to leave behind
Well I said I don't think he'll ever run a dog fighting ring again
But do you think that getting caught and going to jail really changed his opinion completely on that? Its hard for me to believe that he could do something like that for as long as he did and just now realize the error of his ways.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
"I am one of the biggest Texas Ranger fans out there but I'm also one of the smartest. Deal with it."
-The Outlaw
I don't think he thought dog fighting was a big deal
he knew it was illegal but I don’t think he really gave a shit about animals enough to think it was cruel in the way the vast majority of people do. And I do think that point hit home for him after going to jail for it and doing so many of those PSA’s and work with the SPCA.
We can never know for sure
but I don’t think most people change just like that. Maybe I’m wrong though.

Geez, the guy seems as bout as nice of a player/person as there is around. And he is held in high esteem by his teammates, and I dont think that is just because he is good.. It seems like you are taking a shot at him for some reason. Vick is a dog killer, not a capital offense, but a felony none-the-less. I am so meh on Vick’s success.
The public approbation
is partly for how hard he’s worked to get back and stay clean. He’s not a role model for me (I prefer people who didn’t eff up so bad in the first place) but I still rooted for him ever since his rule 5 selection to make it back.

He was actually almost as valuable than Vlad in '10, 2.6 to 2.5 WAR, in just 84 games.
And this from fg:
Not a single team put up a better mark than Ordonez’s .375 wOBA, and only the Orioles (Luke Scott), Red Sox (David Ortiz), Twins (Jim Thome), and Rangers (Vladimir Guerrero) equaled or bettered Ordonez’s +21 run offensive projection from CHONE.
Plus, while he is not good in the OF any longer, he sucks wayyyyy worse than Vlad. I am kind of getting on board with bringing him in, and he costs no draft pick.

No lol but I hope he gets it..
Considering all he’s been thru and the $$$ he’s missed over the years, this is his last chance to cash in. You hear this about other athletes but they’ve made their money and are just trying to get blood from a stone with Hambone I honestly cant blame him.
But the Rangers and Hambone seem to be a perfect fit, I think we’ll sign him longterm and wont break the bank in the process.
I know I know...
Just saying the man is going to get paid one way or another, just hope and believe its going to be with the Rangers. Wont be Cliff Lee money, but I don’t think I’m turning in my Rangers fan card for being glad that a great player who honestly seems to be a great person is finally seeing the fruits of his labor so to speak.
So lets see

I don't think that gets it done
When you're drowning, you don't say 'I would be incredibly pleased if someone would have the foresight to notice me drowning and come and help me,' you just scream.
nope
maybe $52 for 4 years but i doubt that as well
VMart win any MVP's
Yeah I didn’t think so. 4/52 is punk money. Hambone gets Iphone money.
"Ooooh....I want some fucking pancakes!" son of willamos2
VMart was a free agent
Hambone is under control for two more years, he would have to give a little in annual salary to get some security
and I think he'll get more than $7M
in arbitration for 2011, why take less in a long term deal?
When you're drowning, you don't say 'I would be incredibly pleased if someone would have the foresight to notice me drowning and come and help me,' you just scream.
So...4 years $60 mil?
an average of $15 mil per year still sounds soooooo cheap to me

by Walter Sobchak on Nov 23, 2010 4:20 PM CST up reply actions
who knows, we are all guessing
but I presonally would try to lock him in for 5-6 years at a lower annual salary..something like $72 for six years. $12, $13, $14, $12, $11, $10 million in years 1-6 respectively.
I can't see him going backwards the last 3 years unless I'm reading it wrong.
My guess is he won’t sign a thing unless it blows his socks off. He will only get one chance for the big payday due to his delays. The FO would have to overwhelm him to sign. I’m thinking 4/60 like Walter said might get it done.

Apparently we're broke again per TR Sullivan
by lost in space on Nov 23, 2010 2:29 PM CST up reply actions
There is your problem "according to TR"
Cliff Lee: "Seventy or 80 percent of [Hamilton] is better than everyone else. Everyone knows his history. He’s a complete player who plays every aspect well. He’s the best player I’ve ever played with. That’s the best compliment I can give him.’’
I love me some Cliff Lee
But there is no way I want him for more than 6/120 and even that is pushing it for me.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
"I am one of the biggest Texas Ranger fans out there but I'm also one of the smartest. Deal with it."
-The Outlaw
what about the "window"
Take Lee as great for 2 years, good for 2, and mediocre for 2. This still allows for a real chance at the title for 3-4 years with the likes of Perez and Feliz set to make an impact in the rotation from 2012-2014
2010 Texas Rangers: AL Champs (winners of the only real league in the majors)
by Baseball North on Nov 23, 2010 2:36 PM CST up reply actions
That is a nice window
but there is also a window that doesn’t involve Cliff Lee that pretty much everyone knew existed before this last season started and before Lee was acquired.
This team doesn’t have to have Cliff Lee to win. They won the division essentially without him this year. He was a great asset in the playoffs; and clearly he’d be awesome to have. But the team doesn’t NEED Cliff Lee.
Go Rice Owls!
right, but a non-Cliff Lee team is still relying on hope
hope that Perez, Feliz, Holland, and the Erlins can become FOTR type pitchers in the time that the CJ, Lewis and the offensive core are still intact.
2010 Texas Rangers: AL Champs (winners of the only real league in the majors)
by Baseball North on Nov 23, 2010 2:42 PM CST up reply actions
certainly
but a just-signed-Cliff Lee-for-7/140 team is relying on hope that no major pieces need replacing, because there won’t be any money in the piggy bank for a long, long time with that type of deal. There is hope involved no matter what happens.
I think people are forgetting that there are significant risks involved with signing Lee as well. Cliff Lee probably reduces uncertainty if he signs for something like 4/95. He increases uncertainly, dramatically so in 2015-2017, if he’s signed to a longer term or larger deal.
Go Rice Owls!
Every team relies on hope in some way.
And it’s not like a Rangers team without Cliff Lee is a longshot.
So I’m not sure what your point is.
the common meme starting up now
is that the Rangers minus Cliff Lee would have won zero playoff games and would have been lucky to escape the season with the division.
It is time for someone to remind fans that CJ and Colby were and still are very very good pitchers…
Go Rice Owls!
while I agree
I’d be much more comfortable – as I’m sure we all would – with Lee/Lewis/Wilson penciled in for at least the next 2 years. But I’m just not so sure what these final numbers will look like.
How long until Lee HAS to make a decision? And how long until he likely does?
