Friday morning Rangers things

Yawn.

Jayson Stark has a piece on five teams that have money to spend, and the Rangers are listed as one of them, with Stark saying that the Rangers are expected to make a run at Carl Crawford and Zack Greinke once Cliff Lee signs with the Yankees.

And that's about it this morning.

I understand that MFY's have boats of money and if I was forced to predict, I would pick the Lee's destination as the Yankees, but damn if I'm not sick and tired of listening to how the Rangers have no chance to sign Lee.

Does all the MSM think the only team any player wants to play is the MFY? Seriously, the Ranges have a legit chance to sign the player, the juice boxes of writers just want to ignore the fact. Fucking Juice Boxes!!!

Im at the point where I just want to get it over with..

I mean if all we hear is true the union will force him to sign etc and if the offers aren’t close then yeah he’s a Yankee. But its annoying that offers haven’t even been made yet and he’s already being fit for pinstripes in like 99% of reports. I truly believe he loved playing here and he knows our future is bright. Of course there are other factors but not counting us out till its official. I just want the Rangers to give their best offer and not make it a cake walk for the Yankees if he destined for NY(insert eye roll).

If the Yanks blow away any offer from us, then its easy for me to see why Cliff would go to NY. If we come close then I might start to see all of this in a different light. I know the man has the right to go anywhere he wants but I cant help but to feel that if the price is right, here is where he should be playing. Many fans would rightfully feel abandoned.

Yeah I just want us to do....something, anything...

We know Cliff is their numero uno target but they do have other needs, I certainly don’t believe that a CL signing should be contingent on us say getting a catcher or a DH. Go about your business showing Cliff look we want to win with you but we’re prepared to do it without you if it comes to that.

by Vicky on Nov 26, 2010 11:15 AM CST up reply actions

If we sign Carl then I imagine it's with the idea of rotating

Hammy/Cruz/Murph/Mikey through the DH spot… Breakdown something like this-
LF: Carl 150 Josh 12 games
CF: Josh 100 Carl 10 Julio 52
RF: Cruz 120 Murph 42
DH Josh 48 Cruz 40 Murph 60 Mikey/anyone else 12

That has all of the key players at 160 game with murph getting 102 and Julio 52… But realistically Cruz/Hamilton/Crawford are not going to play 160 games, so any injuries(let’s say they miss a combined 60 games?) goes to Murph and Julio so we can get Murph to 140 and Julio to 74 games. That’s a pretty solid breakdown in my opinion and gives us a whole lot of flexibility as well as Josh and Cruz a lot of time out of the field and in the DH spot. This would also allow us to possibly include murph or borbon in a trade for a pitcher (greinke?) and then we just have to sign or call up a 5th outfielder to fill in for whoever we traded. I am a big fan of the flexibility this gives us as well as how much it would hurt the Angels by keeping Carl out of their hands. Sign me up.

my better is better than your better.

by rangerjake on Nov 26, 2010 9:35 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

Except

Crawford, Murphy, Borbon, and Hamilton are all lefties, which presents a problem.

I think, if you sign Crawford, you are committing to Hamilton in CF for the next couple of years and trading Borbon.

by Adam J. Morris on Nov 26, 2010 9:40 AM CST up reply actions

trade Murphy

What if you trade Murphy, and keep Borbon and Gentry as back up OFers?

by CO Ranger on Nov 26, 2010 9:48 AM CST up reply actions

That leaves you with

Your catcher(whoever that may be), Elvis, MY, Ian, and Cruz as righties. 5 out of the 9 in the lineup does not seem like much of a problem to me? You could switch it up some but I would roll with this:
Crawford L
Ian R
Josh L
Cruz R
MY R
Murph L
Mitch L
Catcher R
Elvis R

my better is better than your better.

by rangerjake on Nov 26, 2010 9:53 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

No

We’ve got 2 elite and an above-average corner outfielder. Unless we’re trading Josh for Jon Lester (pipe dream) this makes no sense. Especially not at 100M+.

Since he doesn't want to play CF, and probably wouldn't be nearly as valuable defensively if he did

I just don’t see how he fits here, unless the thought process is to trade one of Cruz or Hamilton for Grink.

by LSJ on Nov 26, 2010 9:32 AM CST up reply actions

No

The Rangers desperately need a C, 1b, 3b or DH, and could really use another starting pitcher.

Crawford doesn’t fit on that list

Yep

They could make a CF work too, but I can’t see how a COF helps.

Crawford could basically fill the DH hole somewhat

You could rotate Hamilton, Cruz, and Crawford through the corner outfield spots and DH. In the playoffs, you could start Hamilton in CF and then use Murphy/Righty at DH.

I’m just wondering if this regular season lineup has enough power:

SS Andrus
LF Crawford
2b Kinsler
DH Hamilton
RF Cruz
3b Young
1b Moreland
C Trampoline
CF Borbon

by cstorm15 on Nov 26, 2010 12:45 PM CST up reply actions

I did see that.

The team has a lot of faith in Alex Avila. That combo could work out really well for them.

I dunno

This team almost coughed it all up in the ALDS after going up 2-0, which, thanks to Cliff Lee, we get to kinda gloss over.

I credit the pitching for allowing us to play loose and aggressive for most of the postseason, myself. A lot easier to take chances and play your game when the opposition isn’t scoring anything.

How?

Exactly what tangible thing does a manager do that, say, Dave Cameron couldn’t?

I’m talking about tangible shit that actually impacts the team’s play, not massaging egos and shit like that. If you need a guy to play PR man and be the “good guy” with the players, nothing is in the way of such a position being created.

But what do managers actually manage, that somebody like Cameron couldn’t?

See Buck Showalter in Baltimore this year or

You probably think all a g.m. does is evaluate players and talk on the phone about potential trades.

by Adam J. Morris on Nov 26, 2010 10:39 AM CST up reply actions

No, that's not my assumption.

I realize you have to have someone who deals with the troops as well.

My point is most baseball managers aren’t actually very good at doing those things, and therefore could easily be replaced in the actual managing role by someone who knows that they’re doing.

Doesn’t mean you wouldn’t want to keep guys who are good coaches, like Wash around to deal with the players.

I think some were skeptical Detroit would suffer that defense behind the plate so frequently.

This is why I wasn’t a huge fan of Texas trying to trump the Tigers’ offer. I just don’t have a lot of confidence that Martinez will be able to put up big enough numbers in the first two years of that contract to justify it overall. Assuming Martinez catches 50 games or fewer next season, he’s going to have to avoid any sort of offensive fall-off to accrue the sort of value that some anticipated.

We will see…
