I'm trying to learn about Xbox and Kinect

So, I know nothing about Xbox and a little about WII. I'm thinking one of these two things will be a gift from Santa to the kids. I am clueless about the differences between the two. Help me.

Apparently, movies and some TV can be downloaded through Xbox. But do you need cable TV to do this?

BTW, it makes no sense to trade for Greinke if the Rangers don't sign Lee, unless the extend Greinke with some of the money earmarked for Lee.

You can watch movies/Tv through Netflix on both

Just requires a 8 – 10 dollar subscription to Netflix, Xbox Live Gold(Xbox only), and a high speed internet connection.

X Box generally has a better game selection, plenty of used under 15 games that are excellent and just recently brought out motion control though I haven’t tried it yet. You can also save music, games, movies(I think), sync with a Windows PC and watch ESPN and a bunch of other stuff.

Wii is fully motion control, more family/kid games and their games tend to run around 30 and up even used for most good titles. You don’t have to buy any sort of service to play or use features of it online. Also it can’t play DVDs and has no hard drive besides an SD card to save games.

You can also download/stream Zune movies besides netflix

Xbox has the full “Zune store”, which means you can rent/buy newer movies too, not just the older stuff netflix offers.

A couple years ago they even went to 1080P streaming. So you dont have to download anything, and theoretically your movie starts instantly. Of course it’s not foolproof but for the most part it works, I have a 10 MB connection. Of course it’s not going to be perfect Blu Ray quality, but it’s pretty good. The quality is supposed to be dynamic, IE it adjusts to network congestion and all that, pretty cool technology. It will degrade picture quality if your connection is struggling and upgrade it vice versa.

One problem, it’s pretty expensive, 6 bucks for new releases in HD. And you only get them for 24 hours. well, you have them like two weeks I think, but once you start the movie you have 24 hours to finish. You can usually rent movies in SD or HD, SD is cheaper, I cant remember exactly but probably 3-4 bucks. And like I said you can often buy them too for the usual 20 bucks or whatever.

Sadly almost every video store, literally, has closed around here (I think there’s one Hastings left, and it’s a decent drive) so really my Xbox is practically one of the only ways left for me to legitimately rent movies, besides the redbox type stuff which seems limited in selection. Though I just pirate most movies I care to see anyway LOL

I think you need a Gold subscription for Zune but I’m not even sure. Ditto Netflix.

Big whoop

Thats only for the login (it recognizes your face and logs you in automatically) feature and most likely FUD anyway. I think just one off the wall site claimed to report “problems” with one of their “darker” employees, and since it was Microsoft the media took it and ran, as did many people like yourself.

Derp

Warning tl;dr,

In the driving game demo, foot pedals worked fine but N’Gai was unable to steer that car. When game consultant and former Newsweek writer N’Gai Croal gave Paradise a test drive, however, the game had trouble reading his steering actions. The footwork (gas and brakes) worked fine, but Croal couldn’t steer his car at all. It wasn’t clear whether this was a problem of calibration differences between Tsunoda and Croal’s very different body types, or if Croal’s crazy dreadlocks threw Natal off. But it was working just fine when Tsunoda was at the “wheel.”He was wearing pants so the feet were no problem but it appears that the technology behind the camera does not work so well with black pigmentation according to some sources.

Yeah

Ngai Croal is a race baiting idiot, next.

That is also an old report, from a beta Kinect.

He’s the guy who started the whole “RE5 is racist because you only shoot black people” (it’s set in Africa) controversy.

I’m sure you want to believe it’s racist cause you hate MS, so I know the truth doesnt matter to you, but anyway, it’s not racist.

Um.

You do know the whole point of it was defending myself from being called racist? lol.

by AfterSchoolSpecial on Nov 26, 2010 5:25 PM CST up reply actions

In fact

IIRC consumer reports, a left wing organization and thus not likely to cut MS any breaks, even officially sanctioned kinect as having no race problems.

But of course that got no coverage.

http://blogs.consumerreports.org/electronics/2010/11/consumer-reports-tests-kinect-facial-recognition-problems-video.html

Here’s what we found: The log-in problem is related to low-level lighting and not directly to players’ skin color. Like the HP webcam, the Kinect camera needs enough light and contrast to determine features in a person’s face before it can perform software recognition and log someone into the game console automatically.

I have a Wii

It was a gift. If I were to buy something myself it would be the Xbox or whatever else. There’s not many good games for the Wii and I mostly use it to stream Netflix.

If they are really little kids then maybe you should consider the Wii. Every time I try to buy a game for it, everything looks like it’s made for 6 year olds. There’s a surprisingly decent but cartoony baseball game for it: MLB Power Pros.

I have Kinect also

It’s a lot of fun, like a super wii plus, and everybody I show it too loves it.

That said it will be kind of expensive, 250Gb 360 with Kinect=399, 4GB 360 with Kinect=299.

I do tend to agree that while imo 360 is the vastly, vastly superior system, if theyre younger or female kids Wii might be best, simply because they can play all the Wii crap that everybody else does. Somehow Kinect Sports doesnt yet have the cache of say, Mario Kart Wii or Wii Sports. And there’s even a few regular mario games on wii like NSMB Wii.

Can I just buy kinect or do you have to buy a new xbox with it?

Is it compatible with a launch 360? Or do I need one with more memory or something? Elite

Wii is cheaper

and has MUCH shittier games. If your kids are really little, the Wii might be ok. If they aren’t little, the XBOX is probably the better option.

I bought a Wii when they came out and an Xbox a year ago…I haven’t touched the Wii once since I got the Xbox.

Wii

Overall the games aren’t as good but every so often a gem comes along that takes advantage of the system.
The new wayne gretzky hockey game is awesome, comes with a little hockey stick to put the controllers into.
I also liked tiger woods on the wii, but apart from that it collects dust and the 360 and ps3 get more use.

by rentz on Nov 27, 2010 11:02 AM CST up reply actions

I have both...

The Wii is nice, but I’m going to disagree with the conventional wisdom on approachability. Because the 360 doesn’t use a controller,or buttons, my 4 year old loves to use it much more than the Wii. Plus, you can’t go wrong with Kinectimals. seriously, she’s logged hours on the thing. My experience with the wii is that my friends like to play on it more than their kids do. The biggest downside to the Kinect that I’ve seen is that it needs a larger play area.
Full disclosure, I work for Microsoft, and I generally drink the kool-aid (I am writing this post on my LG Quantum Windows 7 Phone) but I have owned a wii for a couple of years, and I do think it’s a great machine.

But, I think the integration of the Xbox makes for a better entertainment investment. Netflix has been mentioned a few times already, and I use it on a daily basis. I also love the ESPN application, as well as the media center integration. Using the Ceton CableCard device, I’ve pitched my cable boxes, and run everything through the Xbox, saving $30 a month (pays for my Netflix and Zune pass :)

i've had three

And only the first one broke, about 1.5 years in IIRC. And Ms fixed it free with total turnaround including shipping of just under two weeks.

Yeah, really cant complain that much.

I’m pretty sure since the Jasper chipset came in like 3 years ago, 360’s have a failure rate similar to any other electronics. But again of course because it’s MS, some will delight in spreading RROD FUD forever. But I agree, it was a big problem for early 360’s. But a lot of people act like it’s just as big a problem today and it just isn’t.

by Sharky on Nov 26, 2010 7:22 PM CST up reply actions

I also love

The implicit MS bashing in these people who are reported on that claim to have 13 Xbox’s break on them and such.

I’m always just thinking really, what normal person would stick with a electronics product through that. Really? I mean maybe after the 5th time or so, I think most people would be out.

Those people are definitely either A) breaking their 360’s on purpose to make MS look bad B) continually sticking with it to make Ms look bad even if it is true

And I always think it’s funny, those articles are designed to bash MS, but rally theyre a backhanded advertisement because it’s like wow, if this dude stuck with it through 13 RROD’s, the system must be really damn good…

by Sharky on Nov 26, 2010 7:28 PM CST up reply actions

What really helped

The ability to install the game to your HDD. There should be no reason for a box to RRoD, and my xbox isn’t hot, at all, for it to overheat.

Pretty much the same here

I bought the original xbox at launch and had it working fine the whole time until 360 came out. At which point I stopped using it, I’m sure it still works though.

I also bought the 360 at launch and I did have to get a 2nd one but it was my fault.. a little mishap in transportating it heh. But never had any problems with either 360 that came from the system or anything like that.

I know it has been an issue for some folks

I’m sorry you’ve had a bad experience. The newer chipset is supposed to be much better, but I know that isn’t much solace if you’ve lost more than one early model. Hopefully you were able to take advantage of the extended warranty.

I lost one to RRoD a couple of years ago, but it was because of a bad XBox Live Beta and not hardware failure. It still wasn’t any fun.

I bought an Xbox 360 2 years ago with my Tax return

I have moved twice with it since then, and I the only problem that I have with it is that it won’t read CD’s anymore. Seeing as that I don’t really use that feature much, it is not that big of a problem. Other than That I haven’t even seen 1 RR (partial or Full on RRoD). frankly the only issue that I have is that I can’t play Gran Turismo on it. Though the Halo series makes up for that.

It is awesome

But, you have to keep in mind that I came from 6.5, which was quite possibly one of the worst OS releases in history. However, my Dad is a droid user, and even he is mildly impressed.

7 has a crazy amount of features that I use on a daily basis. Netflix integration is great, and I use it or the little xbox live games during my bus rides to and from work. Getting achievement points for playing Oregon Trail rules. I also have retired my Zune in favor of the Zune application on the phone.

I also love the complete contact integration (facebook, windows live, outlook and personal contact lists are all combined to a single contact list).

MS has always gotten email integration right, so I’m still happy there. My only real complaint is the new calendar interface is clunky, and I think they lost a little when they deviated from the classic Outlook calendar UI.

I don’t think it’s earth shattering, nor do I think that Iphone and Droid users will flock to it in droves, but it is a competative product, and hopefully will get the company some relevance in the phone market.

by Forstall on Nov 30, 2010 11:11 AM CST up reply actions

wonder if the contact integration is better than the shitty version that comes w/ blur

The trouble with trading for Greinke if they don't get Lee is this....

They get Greinke for two years. They give up at least Perez or Holland, if not both.

After two years, who steps in as the high end pitching talent to extend the window of opportunity?

In two years, CJ will be 32, Lewis will be will be 33. Holland or Perez or both will be fixtures in the Royals rotation, and Greinke will be on the FA market.

I think it makes less sense from the perspective of a 2-5 time horizon to trade for Greinke if the Rangers fail to sign Lee.

I'm not sure I know why.

It’s tough to see why it is in a player’s interest not to go into FA and lock down with the team they are on, unless the team overpays any conceivable market number, like the Rangers did with MY.
