OT: Direct TV, Dish Network

Okay, so my mom has Charter Cable and the DVRs are absolutely horrendous. There are also compression issues with Charter's signal or something...I don't think she's getting true HD even though she pays an obscene amount of money for all this stuff.

At my old apartment I had Dish Network, which was pretty good when it worked. The problem was it was Dish through a third party provider. I lived in a loft at the old Sears warehouse and was on the wrong side to get my own Dish Network or Direct TV. A company called Grande Communications had a big dish on the roof that served the whole building. I had lots of trouble with this, but Grande always said it was the way the system was installed, and of course it wasn't installed by them. I've never had any contact with Dish customer service. All that was done through Grande.

So even though I've had Dish, I don't really know what it's like to have it. The cost was increased by Grande, and I got fewer channels in general and fewer HD channels than regular DIsh subscribers. All I know is that I was happy with their DVR.

None of my friends say they've had problems with Dish or Direct TV going out during the rain. If they have I don't remember it. At my old apartment that generally didn't happen unless it got windy. The thing was 11 floors up, so yeah, you know. That's going to happen. But my mom's friends all say they have had problems with their satellite services, so that is what she's worried about. It going out every time the weather gets even a little weird.

And so I'm going to put up a poll to see how happy you are with Dish Network or Direct TV. If you don't mind, put in the comments what you like/don't like about your service. Please don't skew your results if you're upset about the service you got five years ago. I'm only interested in what the service is like right now.

People will say she should get fios or uverse, but neither are available in her neighborhood right now, and neither company will say when they may become available. Those are off the table.

I appreciate your responses. (If I talk my mom into changing and then it sucks, she will bitch at me for 10 years about it)
