I expect the company line to be something like this:

“We feel that if we can limit Vlad’s AB’s that he’ll be able to be stronger later in the year.”

They’ll probably talk about rotating folks like Josh, Nellie, and Murph in the DH spot to keep everyone rested and healthy.

Even if this was the plan, I don’t think Wash could carry it out. Vlad offers way too much veteraniness for Wash to resist.

Huh?

He didn’t say his was given a day of the week and had to get the name for it or something. He said he needed the day of the year from a date. The algo would be more like:

int dayNum;
for (int month = 1; month < month_entered; i++) {
    if (month == 2 && isLeapYear(year_entered)) {
        dayNum += 29;
    } else {
        dayNum += getDaysInMonth(month_entered);
    }
}
return dayNum + day_of_month_entered;

…guess you could have a switch in getDaysInMonth, but the simple assignment thing doesn’t seem right.

You need to return from there:

switch(month) {
    case 2:
        return 28;
    case 1:
    case 3:
    case 5:
    case 7:
    case 8:
    case 10:
    case 12:
        return 31;
    default:
        return 30;
}

or something like that.

by booyakasha on Nov 3, 2010 10:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Nah, the lack of the break was what I was going for.

I didn’t want to manually add up the number of days for the higher months, so for December it would fall through the November, October, September, etc cases and sum up all of the month lengths.

(Though my example was wrong since I was adding in all the months in December when month was 12, and so on. Doh.)

by Closure GT on Nov 3, 2010 10:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, it's the "niftiest" way I could think of doing it with a switch,

but it’s also the sort of code I’d probably never actually write since the whole break thing shoots the readability to hell.

by Closure GT on Nov 3, 2010 10:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Although given that the stuff I'm currently writing in C is starting to have more and more function pointers

and local functions (which I think is non-standard, but works in GCC…), I guess “readability” is relative. :D

by Closure GT on Nov 3, 2010 10:27 PM CDT up reply actions

But the more I think about it the more I like an array. Something like:

dayInYear = day;
int daysInMonth[] = {31, 28, …, 31};
if(leapYear) daysInMonth1+;
for(int i=1; i<month; i+) dayInYear += daysInMonth[i];

by Closure GT on Nov 3, 2010 10:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh, I totally misread that.

I thought he was looking for the day of the week from a full day/month/year date.

And that’s before factoring in the specific situation of this team, which I think makes him even less valuable.

by philkid3 on Nov 3, 2010 9:40 PM CDT up reply actions

This is what I would do..

offer him 4-5 million and let him know he’s only going to be playing 100 games max. Use him sparingly in the first half while you rotate Kins, Ham, Cruz and Young at DH. That will keep them fresh and less likely to break down and not have to see face at third so much :). This way Vlad will be strong down the stretch and in the play offs. Hell I don’t mind if they tell him to show up in June and take it from there.

During the Press conference

in a question about Hamilton, and where he would play in the OF, JD said something to the effect of you’d have to ask ron. He was basically saying he just gets the players, where and when they play was up to Ron.

I’m not sure if JD gets Vlad, he will set any limits on Ron’s usage.

Not really

When you factor in two of those are arbitration years. If you figure arbitration figures of 8 and 12 that leaves 15 per over the two other seasons. Maybe a little off but not too much IMO

by bigsteve on Nov 3, 2010 9:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Hamilton

I think he’s looking at more like $10 million and $14 million in arbitration, then assume $16 million and $18 million to buy out two free agency years, so I think it would be more like 4 years, $60 million.

by Darrell McKown on Nov 3, 2010 9:10 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't see any way he gets 10 million this year

After his down year last year as well as his injury risk I don’t see him getting a jump from 3.25 to 10.

by bigsteve on Nov 3, 2010 9:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Well....

In their equivalent seasons (second year of arbitration eligibility):

Ryan Howard – $15 million
Miguel Cabrera – $11.3 million
Justin Morneau – $10.6 million
Prince Fielder – $10.5 million

Those are the guys he can throw out as comps in arbitration. If he’s the AL MVP, I think he $10 million or maybe even a little bit more.

by t ball on Nov 3, 2010 9:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Well

Morneaus second arbitration was actually 7.6 but that was because he was a Super 2. But his <5 arb number was 10.6.

Both Morneau and Fielders numbers above were during contracts where they didn’t go to arbitration. Those numbers were as high as they were partly due to how high the first year of that extension was. Hamilton got 3.25 million this year. At the same point in service time Morneau got 7.6 million and Fielder got 6.5.

Also you have to factor in age at the time. Hamilton will be 30 a majority of next season. Howard was 29, Morneau 28, Fielder 26, and Cabrera 24!!

Also look at their triple crown numbers which as much as it sucks to do is a big part of what determines these figures. I highly highly doubt stuff like wOBA and such is brought up because its not widely known outside saber people which the arbitrators may not be.

AVG/HR/RBI
Hamilton: .359/32/100
Howard: .251/48/146
Cabrera: .320/34/120
Morneau: .300/23/129 (again his was already under contract so it wasn’t as number driven)
Fielder: .299/46/141 (like Morneau his was already determined)

I just don’t see Hamilton getting that big of a bump even with a MVP trophy. The MVP may get him to 8.5 or 9 but I can’t see double digits this winter

It sounds like the Rangers never planned to pick up the option

even when they signed him. They just included the buyout because they couldn’t afford the extra million last year. Clever.

General manager Jon Daniels revealed Wednesday that the original intent of the contract was not for the Rangers to pick up the option. Instead the $1 million buyout was put in last January at a time the Rangers were limited by financial constraints as a way to sweeten their offer. At the time, the agreement was the Rangers would not pick up the option.

It's odd, Vlad's overall 2010 went almost exactly according to my expectations

150+ games and a .360 wOBA right on the nose, with the caveat being because of his age there’s just no real reason to bring him back. I just didn’t really expect the how of him getting there to be his being night and day in the two halves.

I still think the big thing this offseason might be making the DH spot more flexible next year in preparation for when Hamilton inevitably hurts himself. Which takes Vlad out of the running, and maybe Dunn too (I’d like to think he could play 1B when Hamilton needs to DH, but he’s almost as bad at first as he is in the OF. It’s really incredible how terrible a defensive player he is.)

It’s latin for “nobody”, and it’s also what Odysseus told the Cyclops his name was in Homer’s Oddyssy. There’s also the “20,000 Leagues reference” of course.

Most of all though, it’s a freaking cool song.

You can still call me LSJ if you want to.

Which led me to check on my post count.

Huh. Unless I can stay under 197 (196 now, I guess) posts in the next month and 13 days, I’ll crack 15K before hitting the year mark. That’s more than 40 posts per day! That’s frightening.

that made me look up mine

I just passed the 10K mark apparently in the World Series. i feel like that’s a lot.

most of the time I only partake of a good GDT when I need to whip out “Angrydome Mode.” AM threads are another story.

and damn, you are a comment whore over the last 3 months. I wonder who tops the end of the year lists for commenting this season. I’m sure LSJ will be right there.

The live shows.

His songs were great, but his concerts are what really puts him in a league of his own. I saw him like 4 years ago at Bass Hall. Most people didn’t even know about that show because it was invitation only. It was a fund-raiser for Cooks Childrens Hospital or something. Tickets were like $1000 to $15000 a pop. I worked there at the time so I got to go inside and watch the show during my shift. It was fucking awesome seeing him in an intimate venue like that, that’s something I bet not many people can say they’ve seen.

What an amazing game it was. Y'all Stars fans should hit up the DBD GDTs some time.

Crosby beat up on little Nisky, but Benn kicked two Pitt players’ ass and Morrow kicked one’s ass. That game had everything, even a freakin penalty shot. Oh, and Greenberg was there apparently (per Worley). Also, Elvis and Cantu were next to each other watching the game in the first row.

by booyakasha on Nov 3, 2010 11:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, Greenberg was walking around the lower concourse.

I was debating on going up to talk to him, but I’m not a big fan of bothering people when they’re just out in public and trying to have a good time.

I want to believe he was there to scout out the Stars as a franchise, but he’s a Penguins fan. Ugh.

Good luck with

all that. He just doesn’t get on base nearly enough versus righties or have enough of a glove to play every day. I can’t imagine he’ll get many opportunities to be an everyday hitter as a .268/.310/.425 Corner OF who isn’t elite defensively.

If you could get him to be a cheap platoon player, he might be worthwhile. Other than that, pass.
