I expect the company line to be something like this:
“We feel that if we can limit Vlad’s AB’s that he’ll be able to be stronger later in the year.”
They’ll probably talk about rotating folks like Josh, Nellie, and Murph in the DH spot to keep everyone rested and healthy.
Even if this was the plan, I don’t think Wash could carry it out. Vlad offers way too much veteraniness for Wash to resist.
Hey, are you still here?

Eh, C switches are a pain.
Could do something nice and short (like, two or three lines) with arrays, though.
Huh?
He didn’t say his was given a day of the week and had to get the name for it or something. He said he needed the day of the year from a date. The algo would be more like:
int dayNum;
for (int month = 1; month < month_entered; i++) {
if (month == 2 && isLeapYear(year_entered)) {
dayNum += 29;
} else {
dayNum += getDaysInMonth(month_entered);
}
}
return dayNum + day_of_month_entered;
…guess you could have a switch in getDaysInMonth, but the simple assignment thing doesn’t seem right.

This is where my mind is wanting to go with it.
"The Angels are like the villain in the movie that isn't dead until he's been stabbed 150 times in the bath tub, yet he still might come back up one more time." - Eric Nadel
If I did it with a switch I'd do something like this (assuming my memory of how fall-through works is right):
dayInYear = day;
switch(month) {
case 12: dayInYear += 31;
case 11: dayInYear += 30;
…
}
You need to return from there:
switch(month) {
case 2:
return 28;
case 1:
case 3:
case 5:
case 7:
case 8:
case 10:
case 12:
return 31;
default:
return 30;
}
or something like that.
Ya, you can of course, but this makes the most advantage of a fall through.
Yours above would at least need a break statement after each case.
Nah, the lack of the break was what I was going for.
I didn’t want to manually add up the number of days for the higher months, so for December it would fall through the November, October, September, etc cases and sum up all of the month lengths.
(Though my example was wrong since I was adding in all the months in December when month was 12, and so on. Doh.)
Yeah, it's the "niftiest" way I could think of doing it with a switch,
but it’s also the sort of code I’d probably never actually write since the whole break thing shoots the readability to hell.
Although given that the stuff I'm currently writing in C is starting to have more and more function pointers
and local functions (which I think is non-standard, but works in GCC…), I guess “readability” is relative. :D
But the more I think about it the more I like an array. Something like:
dayInYear = day;
int daysInMonth[] = {31, 28, …, 31};
if(leapYear) daysInMonth1+;
for(int i=1; i<month; i+) dayInYear += daysInMonth[i];
This is quicker technically than calling putting another method call on the stack, but more memory intensive.
Again, technically.
Ya, you'd do something like:
(date(year, month, day) – date(year, 1, 1)).days + 1
:-) I wish they’d teach more problems applicable to high level languages these days.
In thirty years some poor sap who's stuck with the job of updating it to also support the calendar used on the moon or something is gonna be bitching at my laziness.

maybe if JD has a talk with Wash, id take him back for 6-8 million and play closer to 100 games
6 to 8 million?
That’s a terrible idea, and that’s before factoring in the 100 games plan.
by Giant Space Ants on Nov 3, 2010 6:17 PM CDT up reply actions
8 million would just be silly
they could have just exercised his option.
They aren’t going near 8 million.
"I wanted to go out there and punch Julio" - Ron Washington
Yep
There was a $1 million buyout.
If they were willing to pay him $8 million, they’d have just exercised the $9 million option.
by Adam J. Morris on Nov 3, 2010 6:22 PM CDT up reply actions
Eight million might be what I think his ceiling is worth at this point.
Maybe. Mayyyyyyyyyyybe. Ceiling.
And that’s before factoring in the specific situation of this team, which I think makes him even less valuable.
This is what I would do..
offer him 4-5 million and let him know he’s only going to be playing 100 games max. Use him sparingly in the first half while you rotate Kins, Ham, Cruz and Young at DH. That will keep them fresh and less likely to break down and not have to see face at third so much :). This way Vlad will be strong down the stretch and in the play offs. Hell I don’t mind if they tell him to show up in June and take it from there.
This shit ain't over til Bengie Molina sings.
During the Press conference
in a question about Hamilton, and where he would play in the OF, JD said something to the effect of you’d have to ask ron. He was basically saying he just gets the players, where and when they play was up to Ron.
I’m not sure if JD gets Vlad, he will set any limits on Ron’s usage.
"I wanted to go out there and punch Julio" - Ron Washington
JD
He’s very careful about what he says publicly.
If he constructs the team to keep Hamilton out of CF, I suspect he will explain that to Wash very clearly and very privately.
by Darrell McKown on Nov 3, 2010 8:38 PM CDT up reply actions
Yep, and then we can have the dramatic Dave Barnett call of
“oh my goodness is that Vlad Guerrero’s music” when he takes his first at-bat midway through the season.
JD in the press conference today
said there was never any intention from either side to exercise the option, and the only reason there was an option was to defer $1million disguised as a buyout so that they could make budget.
Extremely unlikely
That woud make Vlad near worthless in the free agent market.

and he wants 4/50 – yes or no?
Sure
But he would want a good bit more than that.
by Darrell McKown on Nov 3, 2010 8:57 PM CDT up reply actions
Not really
When you factor in two of those are arbitration years. If you figure arbitration figures of 8 and 12 that leaves 15 per over the two other seasons. Maybe a little off but not too much IMO
Hamilton
I think he’s looking at more like $10 million and $14 million in arbitration, then assume $16 million and $18 million to buy out two free agency years, so I think it would be more like 4 years, $60 million.
by Darrell McKown on Nov 3, 2010 9:10 PM CDT up reply actions
I don't see any way he gets 10 million this year
After his down year last year as well as his injury risk I don’t see him getting a jump from 3.25 to 10.
Well....
In their equivalent seasons (second year of arbitration eligibility):
Ryan Howard – $15 million
Miguel Cabrera – $11.3 million
Justin Morneau – $10.6 million
Prince Fielder – $10.5 million
Those are the guys he can throw out as comps in arbitration. If he’s the AL MVP, I think he $10 million or maybe even a little bit more.
by Darrell McKown on Nov 3, 2010 9:20 PM CDT up reply actions
I'd actually be surprised if he doesn't get $10M
When you're drowning, you don't say 'I would be incredibly pleased if someone would have the foresight to notice me drowning and come and help me,' you just scream.
Well
Morneaus second arbitration was actually 7.6 but that was because he was a Super 2. But his <5 arb number was 10.6.
Both Morneau and Fielders numbers above were during contracts where they didn’t go to arbitration. Those numbers were as high as they were partly due to how high the first year of that extension was. Hamilton got 3.25 million this year. At the same point in service time Morneau got 7.6 million and Fielder got 6.5.
Also you have to factor in age at the time. Hamilton will be 30 a majority of next season. Howard was 29, Morneau 28, Fielder 26, and Cabrera 24!!
Also look at their triple crown numbers which as much as it sucks to do is a big part of what determines these figures. I highly highly doubt stuff like wOBA and such is brought up because its not widely known outside saber people which the arbitrators may not be.
AVG/HR/RBI
Hamilton: .359/32/100
Howard: .251/48/146
Cabrera: .320/34/120
Morneau: .300/23/129 (again his was already under contract so it wasn’t as number driven)
Fielder: .299/46/141 (like Morneau his was already determined)
I just don’t see Hamilton getting that big of a bump even with a MVP trophy. The MVP may get him to 8.5 or 9 but I can’t see double digits this winter
I think the guy I'd like to see here is Derrek Lee
If he is anywhere near the same price range as Vlad.

via trade rumors.com Pierzynski has narrowed the teams he would like to play for to:
Marlins, Padres, Rangers, Rays and Red Sox
It sounds like the Rangers never planned to pick up the option
even when they signed him. They just included the buyout because they couldn’t afford the extra million last year. Clever.
General manager Jon Daniels revealed Wednesday that the original intent of the contract was not for the Rangers to pick up the option. Instead the $1 million buyout was put in last January at a time the Rangers were limited by financial constraints as a way to sweeten their offer. At the time, the agreement was the Rangers would not pick up the option.

It's odd, Vlad's overall 2010 went almost exactly according to my expectations
150+ games and a .360 wOBA right on the nose, with the caveat being because of his age there’s just no real reason to bring him back. I just didn’t really expect the how of him getting there to be his being night and day in the two halves.
I still think the big thing this offseason might be making the DH spot more flexible next year in preparation for when Hamilton inevitably hurts himself. Which takes Vlad out of the running, and maybe Dunn too (I’d like to think he could play 1B when Hamilton needs to DH, but he’s almost as bad at first as he is in the OF. It’s really incredible how terrible a defensive player he is.)

So I never really bothered to pick up one of his albums.
You can still call me LSJ if you want to.
His first album is 5 star great country,
after that he led the downfall of country music.
'Waiting for a girl and she gets me into fights
Waiting for a girl we get drunk on Friday night'
His second album (No Fences) might be my favorite country album ever
Different strokes for different folks, I guess.
"Whenever I'm about to do something, I think 'Would an idiot do that?' And if they would, I do not do that thing."
I just looked up the track listing. Solid album.
I forgot he did a cover of ‘Mr. Blue’.
'Waiting for a girl and she gets me into fights
Waiting for a girl we get drunk on Friday night'
yeah,he's terrible.

You dig Yoakam?

You know...I'm not real familiar with D-wight.
Why don’t you school me.

Yoakam is sick.
His acoustic cd is a jam
Cliff Lee: "Seventy or 80 percent of [Hamilton] is better than everyone else. Everyone knows his history. He’s a complete player who plays every aspect well. He’s the best player I’ve ever played with. That’s the best compliment I can give him.’’
Chris Gaines, dude.

That never happened lol.

Agreed
Every one of his albums was a must-buy for me. Saw him in concert at Reunion in 1998. awesome
"Whenever I'm about to do something, I think 'Would an idiot do that?' And if they would, I do not do that thing."
The live shows.
His songs were great, but his concerts are what really puts him in a league of his own. I saw him like 4 years ago at Bass Hall. Most people didn’t even know about that show because it was invitation only. It was a fund-raiser for Cooks Childrens Hospital or something. Tickets were like $1000 to $15000 a pop. I worked there at the time so I got to go inside and watch the show during my shift. It was fucking awesome seeing him in an intimate venue like that, that’s something I bet not many people can say they’ve seen.

I'll bet that was outstanding
When I go to Vegas next year, I’m hoping to be able to see him at the Wynn

I guess you found your nemo?

nemo is much more optimistic
lsj is more like the dad in that movie.
When you're drowning, you don't say 'I would be incredibly pleased if someone would have the foresight to notice me drowning and come and help me,' you just scream.
the Rockies might not pick up Olivo's option
if that’s the case, that would be my first priority. you’d be able to sign him quicker. I think Lee may just drag a bit between negotiations with the Yanks, the Rangers, and any other surprise suitors.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
Where's Big Guns?
Sidney Crosby actually fought in Dallas tonite.

What an amazing game it was. Y'all Stars fans should hit up the DBD GDTs some time.
Crosby beat up on little Nisky, but Benn kicked two Pitt players’ ass and Morrow kicked one’s ass. That game had everything, even a freakin penalty shot. Oh, and Greenberg was there apparently (per Worley). Also, Elvis and Cantu were next to each other watching the game in the first row.
Yeah, Greenberg was walking around the lower concourse.
I was debating on going up to talk to him, but I’m not a big fan of bothering people when they’re just out in public and trying to have a good time.
I want to believe he was there to scout out the Stars as a franchise, but he’s a Penguins fan. Ugh.

I hope he didn't mar that pretty face?
Actually he’d be fine with a scar or two, he’s THAT good looking.
This shit ain't over til Bengie Molina sings.
Yu Darvish intends to play in MLB in 2012

Will he change his name to "Me Darvish" for the move to the states though?
You can still call me LSJ if you want to.
he'll probably cost too much
for what his performance will be. Lot of miles on that arm and I doubt he’s any better than Colby.

Fine by me.
Don’t really need him. But it was nice that we finally got production out of Arias. Ha.

Good luck with
all that. He just doesn’t get on base nearly enough versus righties or have enough of a glove to play every day. I can’t imagine he’ll get many opportunities to be an everyday hitter as a .268/.310/.425 Corner OF who isn’t elite defensively.
If you could get him to be a cheap platoon player, he might be worthwhile. Other than that, pass.
