So funny where that link takes you.
59th, 18 spots below league average….that isn’t even replacement level, is it?
he's twice as bad as the 58th player
which is even funnier to me

Nice to see Andrus at 11

Derek Jeter was 5 times worse than Yuniesky Betancourt!! Also, let it be known that Adam Everett played in only 31 games this year

i don't get bothered by them but they are silly
Jeter winning (again) further supports my stance of ignoring anyone who mentions how many Gold Gloves a player won when that player’s Hall of Fame candidacy is being debated. (All Star Game appearances don’t mean shit either)

I am amazed.
Not shocked that he won, just amazed that the BBWA is so incredibly out of touch with real actual baseball.
No, wait
It makes sense. Other teams’ players want Derek Jeter to have more leverage during contract negotiations, so the Yankees give him the 6 year contract he wants. Thus, hurting the Yankees.

Really? I think it makes it more understandable.
The managers have less time and interest in looking at other games and/or stats and/or getting other opinions on fielding. If they’re anything like the coaches poll in football — which might be actually giving them too much credit — they also don’t care about doing a good job as much.
Nevermind that they don’t see individual players more than 19 times at best.
Gold Gloves are voted on by players and managers.
Not that it makes Jeter’s legitimate by any means. His should have gone to Andrus and one of the OF ones should have gone to gardner.
Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.
Alexi Ramirez should have won SS
Defensive stats didn’t like Elvis this year. Ramirez was outstanding.
The Fielding Bible awards (or did I screw the name up?) that were announced a couple of weeks ago are MUCH more accurate than this silliness.

Longoria is awesome. If only he knew how to be a leader or the face of a franchise, he’d be the perfect player.

My eyes also didn't like Elvis.
If UZR and DRS both disagree with what I see, then I think there’s a good chance I’m seeing something wrong, but they didn’t. They saw exactly what I saw: a ton of mistakes from a shortstop with a ton of talent who should probably be just fine over a larger sample.
I think Elvis' problem
is definitely more one of focus, and sometimes technique, rather than tools. I think having Vizquel here in 2009 is one reason he performed better then.

Nah, probably shouldn't have gone to Andrus.
Even if you vote on talent level, I don’t think he has such clear talent above all other shortstops that it makes up for all the mistakes he made this year.
Would have liked it, though.
I think Alexi Ramirez should have got it...
but anyone could have got it over Jeter.

That just helped him get more sympathy, though.

I got very tired of hearing about how Cano didn’t make an error all season at Yankee Stadium. That doesn’t mean he’s good at defense, but his 3 errors all year is probably why he won.
It's a traveshamockery!!!!!
Whatever. I like how Pinstripe Alley doesn’t even like it and point towards 1) how this might drive up Jeter’s demand (please) and 2) further reinforces why people don’t like Jeter or the Yankees (agreed).
"You promised me, Eckstein, that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I noticed that during the most trying periods of my life, there have only been one set of prints in the sand. yeah
Jeter can point to this in his contract negotiation as evidence that he isn’t totally in a decline phase.
Don’t think that’ll mean much, but who knows… if this makes it 0.1% more likely that Jeter’s salary goes up enough to keep the Yankees from outbidding us for Cliff Lee, then YAY GOLD GLOVE FOR JETER.
It isn’t like Elvis would have received it anyway.

okay, it doesn't matter much
after all, it didn’t stop the Rangers from moving Young to 3b.
But it probably matters on the margins. It’ll influence at least one “Pay the league’s best shortstop what he deserves” NY Post article. It makes it a teeny bit harder for the Yankees to bluff walking away from the table.
There is at least a 99.9% (probably closer to 100%) chance that this doesn’t change anything. But I enjoy thinking about the infinitesimal chance that it does.
Go Rice Owls!

yankees are too smart to offer jeter more than 2 years 2 million.
which leads me to believe that the royals will overpay him way too much. 3 years $35million.

Front office doesn't care about a hollow GG but the guys who tune in do
I think the Yankees are squarely over a barrel and Jeter and his fans have a bottle of lube and are ready to go to town. This is a guy that’s consistently gone to the ASG (don’t care), home grown and been part of multiple WS titles. Yankee fans would throw a shit fit if he didn’t retire there. I’m not saying a huge dip in attendance but they’d be pissed. Somehow this will hurt them one way or another.

Meanwhile, Cano’s not a bad choice. It’s just not clear that he’s a better choice than Mark Ellis or Orlando Hudson. And I think it’s a bit of a shame that Ellis, who’s been a Gold Glove-quality second baseman for nearly a decade, still hasn’t won the award and almost certainly never will. If only he had Robinson Cano’s bat …
isn't he injured half the time?
At least I have the mental image of Mark Ellis as Ian Kinsler who can’t hit and fields a bit better.
Go Rice Owls!
He's averaged nearly 130 games per year over the last 7 years...
Which I guess means a DL stint or two each year, but it’s not like he’s playing 70 games or something. He’s been putting in full seasons of awesome defense at 2B.
by ghostofErikThompson on Nov 9, 2010 5:29 PM CST up reply actions
ha! deceiving stat alert!
130 games over the past 7 years, but only 115 over the past 3! He’s only played over 125 games twice… which coincidentally is the same number as Ian…
Anyway, my mental image was still overestimating his injury probability though. I could have sworn he missed half a season somewhere. Oh well.
Go Rice Owls!
It's always been amazing to me.
He even has a good reputation. I think it’s pretty clear that managers just do not at all take this seriously.

I didn't care for the trade.
But I guess there were bridges burned. I’ve always liked switch-hitting catchers- Ted Simmons, Terry Kennedy, Alan Ashby…that can provide a little at the plate. I still think Salty develops into that.
I went to the game were he returned(torturous 103 degrees), and watched him, and didn’t see any lingering issues w/ his tosses.

Roman Mendez.
He also turned 20 this season. Strikes people out. That’s the extent of my knowledge there.
The other players were...
Chris McGuinness (first base prospect with a decent OBP, hasn’t showed much else) and Michael Thomas (who the Rangers immediately converted from a catcher to a picther). Mendez is clearly the best of the three.
Thank you.
I kept looking at Thomas and thinking, “Why?” I remember them converting someone, just didn’t put those together.
McGuinness is basically Mitch Moreland 2.0.

Yeah, wonder why Posada (or Cervelli, I don't know/care)
did that. Obviously, the pitcher can’t cover home for him, since he just fielded the ball.
I get that, but don't you see that no one is at home?
Yes, it was a dumb decision for whichever douchebag Yankee catcher was playing that day, but still…
Yeah he should have held back the throw.
But seriously the more I watch that gif what the hell was that catcher doing?

Don't you see how Jeter couldn't have known that to begin with?
I’m not a Jeter apologist but this play was not his fault. With a runner on 3rd the catcher should not have left home plate especially on a ball fielded by the pitcher, since that means no one is able to cover home.
Jeter has the guy out by 10 feet if the catcher is there even if the throw was up the 3rd base line (which I imagine was due to Jeter trying to alter his throw once he saw no one was there but let it go anyways.
The Yankees actually recorded a triple play later that game.
