Sources: Zack Greinke dealt to Brewers

Former Cy Young Award winner Zack Greinke has been traded to the Milwaukee Brewers, sources told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney on Sunday morning.

In the deal, the Brewers are reportedly acquiring Royals outfielder Lorenzo Cain, shortstop Alcides Escobar and pitching prospects Jake Odorizzi and Jeremy Jeffress for the 27-year-old Greinke, 10-14 with a 4.17 ERA in 2010 after winning the 2009 Cy Young.

Royals general manager Dayton Moore had been actively shopping for major-league-ready, up-the-middle position players for Greinke.

The Brewers were expected to receive another major leaguer in the deal. Jim Breem of the blog "Bernie's Crew" reported that player to be shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt.

The Texas Rangers made what they considered to be an aggressive offer for Greinke during the winter meetings earlier this month, only to learn that they were far short of Kansas City's expectations.

don't know what to make of this unconfirmed report

but the talent they would be getting is certainly more major league ready and at positions of identified need for the Royals, than what we were reportedly offering or for that matter, especially at ss, able to offer.

by Dalman on Dec 19, 2010 7:50 AM CST reply actions

Yeah

It’s just the talent is overall a little underwhelming to be honest, especially with what they’ve been asking from everyone else. Sure it may fit their needs but the only impact player on that list is possibly Odorizzi. Sure Alcides Escobar is a poor mans Elvis, but the fact he couldn’t even get above .288 in OBP makes me really doubt if he’ll ever hit enough offensively to really be an average ML player.

Cain is a 4th OF… Jeffress has the substance abuse issues… Yeah just think they could’ve done better.

by TRanger on Dec 19, 2010 7:56 AM CST up reply actions

Of course

I should add that trading Betancourt is probably worth two good prospects all by himself.

by TRanger on Dec 19, 2010 7:58 AM CST up reply actions

If all it took was taking Betancourt

we should have been in on it. Considering how little we have done this offseason, one would think we could eat his 12 million over 2 years and release him, or turn him into a utility guy.

Agree completely

well except the part of him being a utility guy. I think a prerequisite for that is for the guy to at least be good at fielding when they can’t hit at all.

Yeah, better just to trade for him

and waive him.

ugh, ugh, ugh

yea from a pure talent perspective we could fairly easily match that without a huge hit. Obviously, Moore is an idiot… ugh, I’ll probably hate him as much as the Royals fans hate him after this. He probably loves Escobar because of his greatly bad OBP skills.

No on free agency and unless an elite pitcher is being made available under the radar, our “big move” in our most important off-season ever will be….Yorvit?

If Moore was looking for simply the most amount of upside, I think the Rangers, with an upgraded version of the deal, would have had a decent shot.

no little to nothing about Cain

I’ve heard that he was a kind of lucky last year, but have not looked at the numbers. This deal is just so underwhelming. Engel-Holland-Jurickson-Wieland would have been such a better deal for them and one I think the Rangers would’ve done.

If they held out wanting a ML ready SS, then they did the equivalent of drafting for need. You take the best deal out there and then adjust accordingly. No ML ready SS, then roll with Yuni at the 9-spot and enjoy and have fun with your stable of prospects that wull start graduating this year…

Remember Moore has shown little ability to improve an MLB team

Just look at his OF moves this year. Traded a good COF or weakish defensive CF for a #4-#5 starter and a 23 year old in A ball who fangraphs called Okay-ish. Also trading away one of his main OBP players in the deal. And then has now signed two OF who, I’d argue, are pretty damned bad if they are going to be full time.

Frenchy and Melky both look like platoon COF to me. But I’m guessing both are on tap for 600 AB’s next year. Not a big deal for a team that isn’t likely to be contending anyway but still.

Since this came down to best available up-the-middle, ML-ready players, the only ways the Rangers beat this, IMO is the following.

(1) Sign Beltre, move Face to SS, trade Elvis+Borbon+Ogando+Matt Thompson.

(2) Sign Orlando Cabrera or Christian Guzman to play SS and do the trade above.

I would rather sign Cliff Lee to a guaranteed 7th year than either of those two deals.

Instead of getting the maximum return, DM insisted on a pretty narrow set of criterion like ML ready and then specific, hard to find positions. When I saw the rumor first posted last night, I grimaced reading Escobar’s name. DM was serious about wanting ML-ready up-the-middle guys, even if he had to take a hit (how significant remains to be seen) on the overall upside in the package of players he’d get in return.

Move on to Nolasco, I suppose.

I really think the Royals are just a crappy franchise.

They must have equated Elvis to Escobar. I don’t think anyone else would at this point, but they must have.

So lets say what they wanted from us was Elvis, Beltre, Scheppers and Erlin? Would you do that trade? I am pretty sure that I wouldn’t. I’m not saying I agree with the notion that Elvis and Escobar are equal that’s just what I’m thinking they must be going off of.

Hell to the fucking no.

Elvis should be pretty much untradeable (where ‘untradeable’ means unavailable unless for fellow super-stud.)

Exactly Im sorry unless Elvis is a FA next yr no way I give him up for 2 yrs of Grienke..

JJ yes
King Felix, heck yes I love you Elvis but I’ll provide the plane ticket.

But though he has no lick of offense we say how huge he was in the playoffs, there are many teams out there who would kill to have him and he’s ours for 4 yrs.

What Im wondering is if maybe we shouldn’t have given Cliff that 7 yrs, gosh I know when the news came out I said hell no. Mind you now, I’m just posting this because of the ZG news and how once again we’re going to be scrapping for SP.. But who out there is going to be available for trade and able to front our rotation and take us further into the playoffs?. We’re not looking for a #3, we need a #1 or close to it.

We very well could lose CJ if he pitches even better this yr, we are really going to be hurting.

by Vicky on Dec 19, 2010 9:16 AM CST up reply actions

Losing on Greinke didn't make giving Cliff 7 any better of an idea.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see us still being able to make a trade for Greinke at the break. I could be wrong, but I still don’t see this making Milwaukee a big player in the NL Central.

What do voluntary mean?

by JKolar on Dec 19, 2010 9:19 AM CST up reply actions

Believe me deep down I know 7yrs for CL was a bad idea..

I’m just reacting to this bad ZG news and yeah I know we were gonna have to trade for him and nothing is a done deal.

SP is the bane of our existence and we are so close and a couple pieces from wining it all, I just dont want a setback that’s all.

by Vicky on Dec 19, 2010 9:43 AM CST up reply actions

It's actually

4 years of Elvis for 2 years of Greinke most likely. Unless I’m mistaken, and Boras isn’t repping Elvis, most likely we have him for just the 4 more years anyway (you can thank the Rangers for bringing him up at the start of last year rather than a month later). Even if Elvis becomes a special player, most likely he’ll be playing the prime of his career in Yankee Pinstripes or whoever else is the highest bidder.

Reading the reviews of this trade...

It sounds like Cain is more highly-regarded than any of us suspected, and we don’t have comparable traceable players in our system to him or Escobar.

If the Royals targetted those two, there is nothing we could offer to match.

Im not so sure its that far off, Borbon a year ago could be equally equated with Cain

if not better. Borbon now, probably not so much. But their pedigree and minor league track records suggest Borbon was certainly a better option prior to this year. Cain may pan out well, but I have a hard time seeing an all star out of him at even his best.

Moore

I don’t think he seems to know what to do with a team at the MLB level. Finally had a decent offensive team, but traded away his best second best OBP player for basically nothing. He then signed two of the weakest OBP players on the market to have big playing time in his OF.

Moore has drafted well, but I would hope he would when he pretty much is always getting a prime pick.

A source with knowledge of the talks said the Brewers were indeed closing in on a trade for Kansas City ace Zack Greinke, but that the deal was not yet complete.
Greinke would also have been asked for his approval, since his no-trade clause is believed by Melvin to let him block deals to Milwaukee.

He did block a deal to the Nats for, guess what???
Washington was prepared to give up reliever Drew Storen and shortstop Danny Espinosa, as well as others, to Kansas City in the trade.

Targeting FTW! Mooron.

I think if the A's can jump in with a 5/80 deal for Beltre (and everybody else in the AL West keeps their thumbs in their asses) and steal

him from the Angels. they become AL West favorites.

what's humorous to me is how Dayton Moore wanted a deal similar to the Teixeira deal

he got a Teixeira-type of deal, but he unfortunately (for him) got the Teixeira to the Angels deal (Kotchman, Marek) rather than the Teixeira to the Rangers deal.
