Nobody is calling Vick a saint.

And nobody is saying LeBron is a dog killer. But Vick has paid his time in prison. He deserves a second chance, and he’s showing the talent we all knew he had. It’s nice to see the justice system do its job. That is, unless you want him to wear a badge on his shirt that says he’s a dog killer.

But quitting on your team is the worst thing you can do in sports. The absolute worst thing. Right up there with leaving a team on national television. And he’s paying the price for it. Yes, what Vick did was 10000000x times worse from a moral and criminal point, but that’s what makes the LeBron think all the more worse. We would expect someone like Michael Vick to pull a move like that. Not LeBron. That’s why he’s been vilified.

We heard nonstop from him how Cleveland and Akron were his home. He had basically demanded that they brink in Jamison in the middle of the season, along with a few other players in the past seasons. And to leave what you call your home, your base, to join some super team?? Well, it’s like trying to hit a home run from second base.

Don't listen to me. I'm a fucking moron.

by hornedfrogs45 on Dec 3, 2010 12:51 AM CST up reply actions

That makes him an arrogant and/or obtuse jackass

What Vick did was fucking evil.

To be clear, what the Vick apologists always seem to be missing is, It’s not the killing, per se, that’s so despicable. When someone compares it to deer hunting, or eating a steak, they make a bullshit analogy. The evil part is:

    a. Having dogs rip themselves to excruciating pieces, to death, for funsies and giggly-wigglies.
    b. But much worse, is the fact that he tortured and killed them grotesquely, sometimes slowly, and completely unnecessarily, when a simple bullet to the head would have sufficed. Keep in mind these killings mostly weren’t mercy killings AFTER a fight, but to perfectly healthy dogs that just didn’t have the fighin spirit.
    C. And of course, he did this dozens of times, and it most likely occurred on his watch dozens more.

This is pure and bombastic sadism, the kind of shit serial killers start out doing. it makes you wonder what else he’d do if he felt confident he could get away with it.

Personally, I suspect most haters like myself don’t have a problem with people appreciating his playing ability. What we do have a problem with is rooting for the guy. I can appreciate the talents of Mike Tyson or K-Rod, for example, both of which have done much less than Vick, but I’ll never cheer em or hope for their success.

Yes, he’s done his time. He deserves his freedom. But what he doesn’t deserve is some kind of blank slate where we all act like it didn’t happen.

    No, it's not.

If you operate a motor vehicle while intoxicated, and you kill someone, that’s not an accident. You may not have meant to kill someone, but to classify it as an accident would imply that the vehicle operator had no control over the situation. The driver, in fact, did have control; he could have not gotten behind the wheel drunk.

    Personally

I think we as a society should have a zero tolerance attitude towards DWI. The reason folks drive while drunk is because they think it’s not that big of a deal.

    Sorry, meant the 2nd question
If you do this one day and kill someone, would you consider it a purposeful act?

Does this fall equally under your zero tolerance policy?

Because I think it should. But most of society views it drastically different.

That's entirely different than a purposeful act nonetheless... and I think we've had this conversation before

Driving exhausted, driving while texting, driving while putting on your tie are also examples where you are putting yourself in drunk-driving situations

But if you kill someone while you’re texting, it’s still an accident

If we are talking about vehicular manslaughter, which is what the Leyritz issue that started all this was

It has been statistically proven that reaction time while texting is twice as slow as a person legally drunk, and also significantly slower if reading email while driving than driving over the limit.

    Statistically proven?

    Looks like one study.

In any case, I don’t really care. I wouldn’t advocate lower punishment for someone who killed while texting or emailing than I would for someone who had been drinking. In all cases you take the very small risk that you’ll kill someone and you know that going in. No sympathy from me.

by brettgardner on Dec 3, 2010 2:37 PM CST up reply actions

    Come on

You posed a question in a manner which, in my opinion, clearly implied what you thought the answer was. Jobu said:

Driving exhausted, driving while texting, driving while putting on your tie are also examples where you are putting yourself in drunk-driving situations

    To which you replied:

Why is it you assume that the impairment is the same in all of those situations?

I gave you statistical evidence that proved contrary to your implied insistence that DUI’s are a more egregious and dangerous act. If you agree that the standards should be the same, then cool, we agree. But it also means you are a good deal closer to not disputing one of Jobu’s assertions above. Obviously the DUI punishment debate is a separate disagreement.

And I don’t just base my inference on this fanpost. You and I have had several discussions on this in the past, and you have always seemed to hold the over the BAC driving issue as unequivocally, feloniously negligent, while viewing most of all the other manners of irresponsible driving, such as texting, reading email, driving way over the speed limit, driving on no sleep, etc. as much less irresponsible and consequently, less deserving of criminal punishment.

If I’m reading you wrong, sorry. But that’s the place you seem to be coming from.

"I don’t know how these SN blog authors get their gigs, but I’m frankly surprised SN tolerates AJM’s lack of effort." Tex34

Hey Arod. You're fucking out. And we're fucking in.

"If we do that," Lee says, "it would be hard to walk away."

by Brian Thomas on Dec 4, 2010 12:20 PM CST up reply actions

I didn't meant to imply nearly as much as you seem to believe.

I asked why he assumed the impairment was the same. That doesn’t mean I know that they aren’t, or even that I believe they aren’t. You showed me (for some reason) Google instead of actually citing something, but whatever. I guess some evidence is better than nothing. I don’t have any reason to doubt the study I saw.

I think all dangerous behavior done while driving is deserving of punishment. I don’t actually care how much punishment is given for any or all of them; that’s up to the people who vote on such things. But I suppose the main point is that people driving negligently or (more likely) recklessly and killing people is of far more social consequence than a sadist who tortures and kills animals.

And it’s certainly no argument against strict punishment for DUI (specifically deaths related to them) to say “have you ever driven while drowsy/texting/email?” For one, society presently hasn’t chosen to punish those things as severely, and second, it has no bearing on whether DUI itself is worthy of harsh punishment.

by brettgardner on Dec 4, 2010 12:34 PM CST up reply actions

Another way to look at it

The marginal societal cost of one more person driving with a .10 BAC 4-5 times in his life

    <<<<<<<

The marginal societal cost of someone leading a drug fighting ring and purposefully hanging dogs.

The former will likely never cause any harm by his actions. The latter is absolutely insisting on doing substantial harm, and I am doubtful that his criminal activities stop at dog-fighting.

by Jobu. on Dec 4, 2010 12:51 PM CST up reply actions

Well since there's no end to the speculation if you start down that path, I think your last is not a very sound point.

Also, that’s a strange way of looking at the costs. Strict laws for DUI, which can easily kill innocent people, will decrease drunk driving. Strict laws for dog fighting, which will never kill any people, will decrease dog fighting. I can’t imagine it would have any impact on any other form of crime.

We have to judge costs in the aggregate. Having fewer drunk drivers is way more beneficial to society than having less dog fights. I don’t really even understand the argument to the contrary.

by brettgardner on Dec 4, 2010 12:59 PM CST up reply actions

    I'll agree to all that

And my former point wasn’t that sound, you’re right.

I strayed from my original argument, which is merely that I think what Vick did is way more morally blameworthy than what Leiritz did.

But, I agree with DUI punishments as they are for the reasons you stated. I do think employers are a little too harsh reacting to DUI’s on a person’s record. The fact that my friend can’t get a job as a CPS investigator bc of a DUI in college when CPS is severely understaffed seems dumb to me.

by Jobu. on Dec 4, 2010 1:06 PM CST up reply actions

I disagree with the direction of the arrows.

We could have dogfighting become a major ESPN sport across the entire country and it would still be better for society than one more drunk driver.

It's weird to have this opinion

The law certainly doesn’t only punish people that have intent. And I don’t think many people would argue that the law is a reflection of morality.

by brettgardner on Dec 3, 2010 1:30 PM CST up reply actions

    My main point

Is just that from a societal standpoint, I’m more concerned about the guy who is alright with beating dogs and finds enjoyment in watching the dogs hang by a noose to death

than I am about the guy who has too many beers and accidentally kills someone. I’m referring to someone who occasionally goes out with a .09-.13 BAC when they drive. The serial drunk driver who flirts with 1.5’s every night is obviously another story.

by Jobu. on Dec 3, 2010 2:54 PM CST up reply actions

    Not me.

And I’m an absolute dog lover. But recklessly killing people is of far more concern to me than a sadistic fuck.

Anyways, loved LeBron destroying the Cavs.

Boy, the media sure hates LeBron. They couldn’t talk enough shit about him or show enough racist signs aimed at him, or play up the “poor abused cleveland” angle enough.

And loved the TNT announcers trashing him constantly, particularly douchebag Barkley. "LeBron leaving was telling all his Cleveland teammates “you guys suck”".

Oh yeah well, good thing that’s true, then.

Fuck all that shit. Screw Cleveland.

I loved the Cavs getting stomped. Serves you right moron Gilbert.

It looked like the dream team playing lithuania out there. Dwayne and LeBron both are just, specimens. Beasts.

    I also like

How when the Cowboys lose, it’s because they’re gutless, undisciplined, losers, even scum. It’s because they personally, are failures, and they lost because they didn’t try hard enough.

I wonder why none of that applied to the Cleveland players last night in the media’s eyes. No, they are downtrodden heroes.

Do you watch the Spanish Sports channel?

Every analyst said they were disappointed with how Cleveland came with no passion or energy, and how they were friendly with Lebron.

The difference between the Cavs and Cowboys is the Cowboys actually have talent, so their losing isn’t excused. You’re an interesting bandwagon fan.

by Why on Dec 5, 2010 11:15 AM CST up reply actions

    Full of crap.

Barkley is nothing compared to the analysts who played Lebron as a villian, he simply did his job and for the most part, played no favorites. What else was Lebron saying by leaving Cleveland? He likes to live in South Beach more?

They stomped a rebuilding team without a current all-star. “People who write off Miami”, this game’s supposed to prove they’re now the best team in the NBA? They still have no inside presence (they played a team with none as well, so it wasn’t exposed), they still can’t play together, and they still can’t beat decent teams. Good luck in the playoofs.

And what racism? Cleveland doesn’t have black players as well?
