I saw this stat ...

50% of the goals Arsenal have conceded this season have come from dead-balls

by shroomer on Dec 30, 2010 7:35 PM CST reply actions

Not surprising.

They really don’t have much height at all and Almunia and to a lesser extent Fabianski are both flappers.

by LiamP on Dec 30, 2010 7:43 PM CST up reply actions

FWIW

The in-the-know guy at the Blue Moon transfer page cryptically linked this video. Suppose he means Dzeko, and I suppose the ‘power’ City showed will be getting him into the clubhou$e early in the window. or whatever
[btw, Blackpool should break lotsa Blue Moon hearts tomorrow if City’s facepalm history is followed]

by shroomer on Dec 31, 2010 2:42 PM CST reply actions

thinking about it more ...

this guy claims this has nothing to do with Dzeko – so he’s really hanging his rep out there on the line – ‘cause he’s exhibited pretty solid “in-the-know” over the past year or so

So, Rom Lokaku? Sounds to me like Rom’s a Real Madrid/Mourinho fan tho’. Who knows …

by shroomer on Dec 31, 2010 6:12 PM CST up reply actions

I would think

Adebayor and/or Santa Cruz would be on their way out with Dzeko arriving at Eastlands.

I was trying to remember how early last year I heard news ManU were on Hernandez.

Is there anybody you guys have targeted for next summer like that? Close-to-for-sure-wise?
BTW, does the thought ever cross your mind these days that you’d rather see Javier instead of Rooney on the field?

I've seen tons of mentions of United getting a keeper this summer

lately it’s Adler from the german league

by rentz on Dec 31, 2010 4:47 PM CST up reply actions

Noone even remotely close-to-sure.

Lots of talk about Alexis Sanchez, Adler/De Gea (less so now with De Gea), and Defour last summer.

No. Rooney’s a much better link-up player than Chicharito and the goals will eventually start coming. I love Chicharito as a player but he needs to bulk up a bit before he’s ready to play a bigger role in PL games. He gets bullied off the ball very easily.

by LiamP on Dec 31, 2010 4:49 PM CST up reply actions

speaking of bulking up

I saw some old youtube clips of a young NDJ before he got thick. Dude used to have MOVES – really quick and attacking in the offensive 3rd. Not any more!! Bulked up and now he lives south of the center circle.

by shroomer on Dec 31, 2010 4:52 PM CST up reply actions

yeah, but I heard about it loooong before then, IIRC

Like – maybe he didn’t play any the 2nd half of the Mexican season for Guadalajara waiting for the opp to sign in the summer.

I don't remember off the top of my head.

I know he attended one of United’s CL games…in fact, I think it was when they were knocked out by Bayern.

Arsene

Didn’t rule a signing out, but there is no chance he signs anybody.

Vela will probably go on loan and some unfortunate team will get Alumnia. That’s probably the extent of Arsenal’s activity this window.

Just read on Twitter that Tony Barrett of the Times is reporting that Hodgson is on his way out, and that NESV (John Henry’s group) are actively searching for his replacement, but that they want a “high-calibre” man before dropping the hammer on Roy.

Worst City ever game for Tevez. Hart tips 2 drives away from the upper 90.
Mancini hesitates and loses control of midfield again. Silva limps off grimacing … GULP.

by shroomer on Jan 1, 2011 10:57 AM CST reply actions

Blackpool

were dreadful the first half and lucky to go in only down one. They were magnificent 2nd half and pushed City to the brink. Hart had two fantastic saves and Phillips tried to run City’s defense off the pitch. Damn near succeeded a time or two. Would have been great to nick a point but with that kind of effort and drive they’ll do more than just stay up this season.

by Hull Fan on Jan 1, 2011 11:33 AM CST up reply actions

saw this stat
When Silva was on the pitch: City 336 successful passes, Blackpool 240. Once he went off (on 64 mins): City 87, Blackpool 125.

by shroomer on Jan 1, 2011 12:15 PM CST up reply actions

He really does care more about effort and progress

than results. Yeah he wants to win and pick up points but more than that he wants his team to improve, play well and pass the ball playing attractive football. The first half they didn’t but as the second half wore on and Silva left the game Blackpool held onto the ball longer and gave themselves opportunities to score.

In some ways its disappointing not to have gotten anything from either of these fixtures against City but if you look at the matchup on paper as far as money and quality of player, I didn’t really expect otherwise. Thought it might be more high scoring but…

Kinda interesting article about Beckham and the LA Galaxy

some interesting stats in it – sorta puts a black hat on him – it also seems to claim that Landycakes was denied permission to loan out to the EPL this season by the Galaxy FO

by shroomer on Jan 4, 2011 5:06 PM CST reply actions

hey RC

I just listened to the Times soccer podcast. One guy said a journo buddy of his came away from a meeting with the new Liverpool FO thinking that these guys were profoundly clueless about the business side of Eurofootball. And the pod group generally agreed, calling them ingénues. This was in reference to the Hodgson situation – basically that firing Hodgson doesn’t solve anything because the American FO doesn’t know what they’re doing. They have bigger fish to fry than just finding a new caretaker mgr for the sake of canning Hodgson, himself a caretaker mgr in their eyes.

Is that Liverpool’s fans take on the situation? They weren’t mean-spirited or anti-American in their tone, just convinced that the people running things were horribly inexperienced, and that bigger probs than a new mgr existed.

BTW, they thought hiring Dalgliesh would be a mistake, since he wouldn’t be the long-term fix but just a bandaid. I was surprised at how harsh they were in their assessment of the Liverpool situation.

by shroomer on Jan 4, 2011 7:26 PM CST reply actions

The new owners

The fan base seems mixed on them so far. You’ve got your element who’s opposed on general principle to foreign ownership (especially in the wake of Hicks/Gillett), there’s the group that’s pissed they haven’t fired Hodgson yet, there’s the group who’s still in “wait and see” mode, then there’s a few optimists.

I tend to fall in the “wait and see” camp. I can’t disagree that Henry’s group appears inexperienced, and I think they have a lot to learn, both about soccer in general, and Liverpool FC in particular. That said, they appear to recognize they need help. I know Henry has personally reached out to one LFC blogger I highly respect to get his opinions; they’ve held discussions with some of the major fan groups, and they hired Damien Comolli to oversee transfers.

I do like that ownership seems to be organizing the club on an Arsenal/Lyon model of acquiring and building around younger players, and maximizing the club’s commercial assets. As for the manager situation, I agree that Dalglish would be no more than a caretaker, and as much as I would like to see Hodgson gone, I also understand that it’s important to find the right replacement first.

No Balotelli tomorrow either.

So what are we looking at here?

Hart; Boateng, K. Toure, Kompany, Kolarov(? can he be trusted to defend Nasri or Walcott?); Barry, DeJong, Y. Toure; Milner, Tevez, Johnson(?)

Hoping for a draw but fearing an Arsenal win.

by LiamP on Jan 5, 2011 1:27 AM CST reply actions

Good point about Kolarov - he sucked last week, had to be subbed off for Zabba.

And Micah Richards has arguably been better at RB than Boateng. Will be interesting to see who Mancini goes with at wingbacks in a big game. Form over paychex?

It wouldn’t surprise me if Jo starts over AJ. AJ ran his guts out for 90 mins over the weekend and yesterday attended the funeral one of his best friends – an apparent suicide. Tough ask to excel so soon.

I saw a good point made at an Arsenal blog – City’s point total is a bit inflated because, beyond the season opener @ Spurs, City haven’t played any of the big teams on the road yet. City is really an unknown in this situation. Form-wise, City have been playing better on the road than at home, so we got that going for us. Arsenal could be overlooking us a bit, too, considering the manhandling they gave us at COMS.

I was very hyped up for the City/Arse game at COMS a few weeks ago. Ended up with big pain. This week I’m just the opposite. Resolved to watching for Spurs and Chelsea to drop points today as my probable source of happiness. If City don’t lose I’ll be thrilled.

If you ever start Paul Fucking Konchesky in a game of importance ever again, I will travel to Liverpool and beat you personally. Lucas has had to cover his useless ass all day today, and there’s only so much he can do.

Also, Daniel Agger is one of your best defenders. He should not be behind Skrtel, Carragher, and Kyrgiakos in the pecking order.

This game reminds me of City's game over the weekend.

We grew mentally and emotionally exasperated by our inability to put away our chances. Blackpool enventually took advantage and won the run of play and some good chances.

Arsenal kinda started to look that way here – the exasperation affecting their energy level and concentration to the point where City began to balance the run of play over the last 20 mins or so. If AJ can get on the field for Yaya or Barry before we go down a goal, I give us a chance not to lose – his quickness could really help by replacing a plodder in midfield. SWP for Jo over the last 20 mins might bring some more quickness.

Zonal Marking's take:
Mancini got what he came for with a dogged defensive display. City had to withstand an early Arsenal siege, in a similar way to the opening day 0-0 at Spurs, but were much more comfortable in the second half, although there still has to be an improvement in turning defence into attack – too often City simply had no forward pass from the back.

I think this will be FO’s job this summer – find young, athletic, skilled 2-way players to put in the midfield instead of Barry, Yaya and Milner.

by shroomer on Jan 5, 2011 4:52 PM CST up reply actions

young, athletic, skilled 2-way players

I sort of agree with you, but that’s a pretty tough ask even if you have an unlimited budget. You could go after guys like Hamsik and Nuri Sahin and it would work fine. They’re not really 2-way players, but I don’t think that’s what you have to have. You just need to find a guy who’ll supplement your attack and who isn’t completely defensively challenged…that way you can just push Yaya Toure back to a more natural position.

Not past this season

Dalglish does command a ton of respect in that locker room, but the club seems like they want him in more of an advisory capacity long-term. I suppose things could change if they finish top four and make a deep run in the Europa League.

From what I’ve read of the candidates rumored for the job, Vilas Boas and Deschamps both seem like they’d be good fits. Deschamps was supposedly a strong candidate over the summer, but the board at the time was fixated on bringing in an English manager. For what it’s worth, Vilas Boas has worked previously with Steve Clarke, who was hired today as a first team coach, and they reportedly have a good relationship.

Other names I’ve heard mentioned recently: Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp, Ralf Rangnick, who just left Hoffenheim, Owen Coyle, and FC Copenhagen manager Stale Solbakken.

Klopp

I heard that he not only said no, but recommended Rangnick.

From what I’ve read of Rangnick, he seems like a guy well-equipped to handle our current squad. Like Rafa, he favors a high defensive line, lots of pressing, and the possession game. He also seems to share Rafa’s prickly personality, and hasn’t been afraid to speak his mind, which could be a potential issue. On the other hand, his attacking philosophy is reportedly more in the Wenger mold, and he’s cited him as someone he greatly looks up to.

Vilas Boas also seems like a great choice- learned from one of the best in Mourinho, and has also made his name at Porto.

Both Rangnick and Vilas Boas speak fluent English, and have spent time in the country, so they probably wouldn’t have as much trouble adjusting as some other foreign managers might. And I expect we will go foreign for our next hire- just a gut feeling there.

Needed the replay to tell it was a dive.

Was a poor decision by Webb but one that’s made quite often. The red on Gerrard was fully justified, and those were really the only two talking points.

by LiamP on Jan 9, 2011 7:22 PM CST up reply actions

Stevie & Babel

I didn’t think so at first, but after getting a couple more looks at it, yeah, that red card was justified.

Still, I thought the team played with a lot more passion today, and to be down a man for an hour and only lose 1-0 at Old Trafford on a dodgy penalty- well, that sucks, but I’m not terribly upset by it. Reina looked like his old self today, and I hope Kenny took note of Martin Kelly’s performance, and finds a way to get him in the first team more often.

Loved Babel’s tweet, even if he’s likely to get a fine for it.

Martin Kelly.

I don’t understand the praise for his performance today. I thought he looked good but in no way did he keep Giggs in his pocket, which is what quite a few of your lot have indicated. Giggs was one of United’s top 3 performers today along with Rio and Rafael, so I don’t follow that logic at all.

More passion perhaps, but Torres still looked really languid and, frankly, uninterested. I’m guessing a lot of that has to do with Gerrard’s exit since they have some crazy symbiotic relationship, but he has to show a bit more than he did today. Your only legitimate goal threats were a Maxi shot hit straight at Kuzczczzczak and the Fabio Aurelio FK.

Unless Liverpool get mad transfer resources and make the top 4, there’s a 0% chance he goes there. He’ll be the hottest commodity on the market this summer…why would he go to Liverpool in this state? Same goes for Lukaku, who I think is destined for Chelsea or Real.

by LiamP on Jan 10, 2011 11:31 PM CST up reply actions

Well, it all depends what happens with their ownership.

If the new owners aren’t willing to spend 20-30mm pounds-of-money, then why the fuck did they buy the team?

And, even so, assuming they’re gonna sell some of their shit (mainly Ladyboy) they can at least expect some cash to free up that way.

Although, FWIW, I said I don’t think there’s anyway Thorgan’s Bro ends up in Red, I actually do think there’s a realistic chance they snag Lukaku.

I’d favor Chelsea and Real as well, but I think that one’s at least doable, and I’ve read reports their main scout is in love with Romelu’s penis.

Lukaku

His father is very involved with his future plans and says he won’t go anywhere until he finishes his schooling in Belgium. After that, he wants him to go to a top-level club that can develop his talent. Does that sound like Liverpool?

Everyone’s in love with Lukaku. The guy’s in his teens, is proficient with both feet and is built like a fucking house. Comps are totally meaningless most of the time but he is a young Drogba.

by LiamP on Jan 10, 2011 11:40 PM CST up reply actions

Come one, now.

I’m no Liverwanker, but Liverpool is not a top level club?

Sure they are.

They’re down right now, but even a fan of the British New York Yankees has to admit Liverpool is still very much a top-level club.

And, yah, I know he’s not going anywhere till the summer cause Roger loves him some Belgium schooling, but I fail to see how that hurts Liverpool.

Like I said, I favor other clubs over them, but I still think him to the Pool is a very real possibility.

In a vacuum perhaps, but at the moment their star is fading in comparison with other clubs.

Their club is in a bad way right now. This will be the 2nd consecutive year without CL football and what quality young players have they’ve produced over the last few years? Lucas? I don’t think they can compete with City, Chelsea (even with Roman’s penny-pinching of late), United (even with their financial situation) or maybe even Spurs financially. Developmentally, I don’t see why a young player, particularly one as demanded as Lukaku, would go there when he would have his veritable pick of the litter.

by LiamP on Jan 10, 2011 11:51 PM CST up reply actions

Oh, I didn't know we were going shortsited.

Yes, shortsitedly speaking, Liverpool is fucked and they have no shot at signing anyone ever and Manyoo will never ever lose and Dame Judy Dench is the best coach ever, LOL!!!!!

But, realistically I don’t see it panning out that way.

The Liverpool-iness of Liverpool has to have a longer shelf-life than that.

Or maybe you’re British-ier than me and I should shut the fuck up before you show me that book again.

We’ll see, I spoze.

Liverpool's under the ownership of a group that's completely new to football ownership and whose budget is complete speculation.

They’re being managed by a glorified caretaker and their best (non-GK) players are a constantly crocked 30 year old and a constantly crocked 26 year old with the ankles of a 40 year old. Their 10 year future is impossible to speculate on, but the recent history speaks volumes.

I’m not saying Liverpool will collapse into a pile of ruin, but why would anyone as in demand as Lukaku choose them in their current state?

by LiamP on Jan 11, 2011 12:07 AM CST up reply actions

Well, like I said, a lot of it depends on how the new ownership acts.

I was under the impression they paid a huge sum for the franchise in order to get them back to the top, cause otherwise why the fuck buy the team?

If they’re not gonna free up a bunch of funds, then, yah, they’re fucked and no wonderkid’s gonna go out of his way to end up there.

But I see a different short-term future up there than you, I suppose.

Like we’ve both basically said, nobody really has any clue cause nobody knows fuckall about how the owners are gonna conduct themselves financially and they don’t even have a new long-term manager at this point.

I see it going one way, you see it going another.

I don’t think either of is “wrong”, it’s just that no one fucking knows.

Albrighton has been pretty much the best player for Villa this season, along with Downing.

Young’s been pretty good in his free role overall, but he’s tended to play up-and-down.

Just that Albrighton really should play whenever he can.

Except it might not matter when they don’t have a single fucking forward.

Carew is barely functional at this point... but, still, I agree.

We’ve got fantastic wingers who all deliver great crosses into the box, but asking Emile Heskey and Jiggle-Tits to geton the end of one them is like asking a crumpet to taste delicious… it’s just not going to happen.

At least Carew is fucking mean.

Agreed on all counts.

If I find the man who convinced Agbo it was a good idea to try to add 20 lbs. this off season in an attempt to become a more “complete” forward, I’m gonna stick my man-penis inside of every single hole on his fucking body.

He’s been beyond putrid.

To me the main problem is our best three players this season are all wingers… Young and Downing functioning best on the left, and Alby on the right…. if someone (Liverpool?) were willing to buy high on Young, would you do it? (Say, 22mm pounds of money?)

I think I would.

Fuck do our forwards suck.

I wish we’d sit Agbo until he stopped being fat and just play Delfuenso.

At least he’s fast enough to be threatening.

If someone offers a fee above 20m (presumably not like, 20.1mil or some shit like that)

I would do it.

I used to worry that playing one forward was ‘wasting’ the others on the bench. Now…

Except Delfouneso doesn’t seem to bother pressing, can’t hold the ball up, and the team will probably never knock the ball into space for him anyway.

I guess I haven’t seen enough to properly opine on him, but I’d rather have him play in the Championship on loan or something to gain some consistency.

I wonder how Weimann will do. Seriously, I’ve been reduced to some guy who’s been injured all season.

Fuck-cock.

I'm worried we're gonna make a panic move for some older forward that I'm just gonna absolutely HATE.

Like, say, Robbie Keane.

You’re probably right about Delfuenso… I guess my frustration there is that this is a re-building year, and yet we still can’t be bothered to get our young forward (the one we should theoretically be re-building around) out there on the pitch at all.

He should’ve at least been given some run in some of the cup matches or whatever… I did not need to see Gabby’s titts jiggle against the Blades this past weekend, for instance.

But you’re prolly right and he’d be best served by getting regular PT on a chamipionship side this second half. (Lichaj, too, for that matter.)

And, yah, I’d actually love Bendtender.

He’s a terrible fit at Arsenal right now (they don’t have a system to utilize a PF-type striker at the moment), but he’d be light-years ahead of the oldies-and-fatties lineup of forwards we’ve got at the moment.

Fucking Agbonlihor… I fucking want to stab him in his waddle.

I don't think Liverpool has 20m to spend...much less on one player.

There’s been talk about United being in for Young if Valencia doesn’t recover soon, but his comeback has been moved up to early February (by which point Park should be back), so that’s not likely.

by LiamP on Jan 10, 2011 10:02 PM CST up reply actions

No, Young's been fine.

Being asked to play out of position this year behind the striker has been awkward for him (he’s got a pure LW’ers skillset, imo) but overall he’s been pretty good.

However, as jtf said, being a creative player on a team with no one to create for is kind of a losing proposition from the get go.

I haven’t seen any drop in his work ethic or passion, though, despite all the shit going on around Villa Park, which says a lot about him, imo.

He’s not one of the guys I blame at all for the mess we’re in.
