AL West on MLB Hot Stove
This might have been posted and I couldn't find it, but John Hart addresses the young talent in the AL West. Hart may have been an abomination as the GM here, but he's surprisingly good on the MLB Network. Nothing here we haven't heard before, but it's nice to hear that Texas is getting more pub.

Rangers pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report on Thursday, February 18.
Marteen
doesn’t turn 19 until April. Hart said Marteen pitched last season as a 19 year old, which is incorrect.

ESPN
hates the Texas Rangers and is in love with the moves the Mariners made this offseason. I agree they got better but seriously:
1.) We were better.
2.) We fixed our problems (offense, I know – who would have thought)
3.) We fixed our problems (Kevin Millwood: love the guy but I’ll take that finance relief for the way we spent it)
4.) Wildcard: Colby Lewis
5.) Shouldn’t be a wildcard: Vlad
6.) Seattle has pitching… Our pitching DEPTH – young as we are.
I’m so super sad (kenny powers) that I don’t get MLB network but ESPN is praising the mariners.
The Rangers are under the radar and you know what? We are damn good.

I dunno about ESPN.
But none of your points (except maybe 6) speak to why the Rangers would be better than Seattle this year. Some (2-4) suggest reasons why the Rangers will be better than last year, but that does not meant that they’ll be better than Seattle for numerous logical reasons I encourage you to think of the next time before you post.

We may have depth, but the rotations in the AL West are all strong. Our rotation has the potential, but on paper we don’t look like the best rotation. Saying that, there are alot of question marks with all these rotations
Seattle — Felix, Lee, Bedard, Fister, Rowland
Angels — Weaver, Santana, Saunders, Kazmir, Piniero
Oakland — Sheets, Anderson, Duke, Cahill, Braden
Rangers — Harden, Feldman, Lewis, Hunter, Holland/McCarthy
This division will be tough this year.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
Bedard won't be there all year though

That could be said for a number of guys on that list
I hope he hardly pitches, but he’ll still be in their rotation and Ian Snell would replace him. I find it interesting that all the injury prone starters with high upside signed in the AL West.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
no
Bedard won’t be starting the year with the team. He is expected to be out until the all star break.
so he'll automatically miss half the year
my point remains that could STILL be said for a number of guys on the list…ie Harden, Sheets, Santana, McCarthy. Can you guarantee any of those will pitch more than Bedard? Maybe Santana
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
It's dicey that Bedard is pitching at the break
I’d say it’s likely that Harden ends up with more innings. Nobody knows what to expect with sheets. Santana will probably have more than Bedard but who knows. McCarthy…well it’s anybody’s guess but Martin Perez may finish the year with more MLB innings than he does.

Kazmir scares me
I can see him bouncing back and returning to form. That’s the last thing we need.
That's why they call them business sox
You know, we actually didn't do anything to "fix" our offense
We just added Vlad, who is a wildcard like it or not. That’s not really “fixing” anything, it’s just adding upside.
Basically this is the same offense that croaked in September last year, with Vlad instead of Marlon Byrd or Andruw Jones’ bloated corpse hitting fourth.

Heh...
I know. I am optimistic about the offense, but mainly because of regression and development, not Hurdle. Realistically, you would expect only 3-4 players to not improve on their numbers from last year. Hamilton, Kinsler, and maybe VLad for positive regression; Davis, Salty, Andrus for development. While Young is likely to regress (though he’s always had a high BABIP, so it’s not quite as much of a concern), I don’t expect too much from Cruz.

I don't see how they could be any worse than last year
…with or without Guerrero. Likely they will improve as a group as you suggest, though I expect Cruz to hit.

Each of our youngeons is a bit older, too
don’t discount that too much—young players with upside (Elvis, Davis, Kinsler, Tea/Salt) tend to get better
I still expect the offense to improve on it's own, don't get me wrong
They could be pretty good if things click.
I’m just saying though, nothing has been done to actually fix it. It’s gonna have to fix itself.

My problem with Hart on MLBN is his inability to be critical.
Every team is real good this year. Every player is real good. Every pitching staff is awesome.
This was never more apparent then when he talked about the Brewers rich history and how many great players that have played for them.

I am a sucker for Corey Hart as a fantasy pick every year
Partly because I want to be able to use “Sunglasses at Night” as my team’s theme song.
In fact, I think I’ll crank up that song at my desk right now.

So...
every year since 1992 I’ve bought the Sporting News Baseball Preview magazine. Through the early-mid 1990s it was practically my only source of baseball predictions/team outlooks as the year rounded up to spring. It was exciting to get my hands on a magazine devoted to the upcoming year and dissecting the moves of the winter, pouring over the Rangers schedule, and learning new names of prospects that might be on the way. This has been a tradition that I looked forward to as a springboard to start thinking about baseball again. Through the late 1990s-2000s, where every sports site on the web has team previews and such for free, it has become more of a force of habit and honoring the tradition.
However, since the price has gone up from about $4 to $8 over the years, and having a wealth of baseball information at various corners of the Internet just a click away, my interest had waned and I decided to see what the book offered this year before I just bought it.
I was in the book store today perusing the baseball preview magazines and I read a little of the Rangers preview—after noting they predict the team to finish 3rd behind LAA and Seattle—and saw the heading: “Like so many seasons before, the always offensively potent Rangers are in desperate need of a few good arms.” The decision was made right then that an 18 year long tradition would finally be broken.
I don’t know what I was expecting, these magazines haven’t been worth it, really, for the length of time that information online as been freely available, and frankly, the Sporting News is terrible anyhow. However, I feel insulted as a fan that tries to inform himself, and has supported the yearly baseball preview for years, when the best they come up with for the team I follow is trite bits like “A familiar refrain echoes around Rangers Ballpark: Does this team have enough pitching to go along with its high-octane offense?” or “The Rangers were in the bottom half of the league in ERA in ‘09, and the defense—manager Ron Washington’s major emphasis—was subpar, as Texas had a .982 fielding percentage.”
Then I saw something about the defense hopefully improving after young shortstop Elvis Andrus getting his feet wet last year despite his 22 errors. Blerg.
Granted, I’m not saying a magazine that has to cover all 30 teams at limited resources should be a homer for the one I happen to like, as I said, I’ve bought the magazine for 18 straight years, I’ve come to expect a less than glowing review/preview, but goodness, couldn’t they at least try to examine the real causes of a team’s success or lack thereof instead of going with the long held stereotypes? I’ve probably answered my own question, but reading just that tiny bit of a lazy assessment totally put me off continuing to support the magazine.
I guess now I have $8 dollars that can go towards seeing the Rangers play this year. That’s a better use of my funds, I’d say.

Yep
Preview magazines are so 2004. And Sporting News preview mags are more like 1904.
Morality you can fake. Fun you either have or you don't.
Indeed...
They were the coolest thing ever when I was a kid, though! February couldn’t come soon enough.

Yeah, my story is very similar.
I, too, bought Athlon and TSN previes every year. Sometime around 2004 I started realizing they sucked and I could learn far more on the internet. Pretty much just for the excitement I still bought them for a couple more years, but finally decided to save the money and stop getting pissed.
That’s bad, though. Exceptionally bad.
My favorite preview mag ever...
is the 1996 ESPN Baseball preview magazine. I don’t know why but I’ve hung onto it forever and pull it out to read whenever I think about the 1996 playoff team. The Rangers were forecast into 3rd place that year, too.
Ah, the good ol’ days…

I would also echo your comments since I would look forward to getting their previews before the seasons. It was always nice to check up on the other teams in the AL West and see if they thought the Rangers had a shot that year. It’s been a few years since I have had a subscription to Sporting News and probably wouldn’t buy their season previews. If I remember correctly don’t they usually have a local writer write for each of the teams. I wonder who wrote about the Rangers needing some more pitching.
