Do you knock Telis down any

with the injury? My tiers are nearly identical to yours, though I mentally have Wieland, Bos,and Tullis at the top of that 4th group.
And I just lump Profar in with that 3rd group, just ahead of DGut who is in that group for me. I am hoping that by midseason Profar’s scouting reports have him firmly in group 2.

yeah

right after I hit enter I realized that I probably had Telis too high considering his arm might not work too good anymore

just rearranged the names on the list in question

by shroomer on Feb 13, 2010 2:40 AM CST up reply actions

This winters list was really all over the place

Main and Beavan for example, are a little too high, Hurley is NAP, and Z’s right about Sardinas being way too low if we’re gonna buy into the Profar hype machine.

I’d prolly rank em…

1) Feliz
2) Perez
3) Smoak
4) Schepps
5) Font
6) Ross
7) Main
8) Gutz
9) Profar
10) Moreland
-———————
11) Sardinas
12) Kiker
13) Strop
14) Moscoso
15) Wieland
16) MaxRam
17) Beltre
18) Miggy V
19) Poveda
20) Boscan
21) Beavan
22) DoncaKong
23) Eddie E
24) Kirkman
25) Tullis

That’s without Beltre and Ogando, who I’d prolly put in the mid-to-high teens off the top of my head. As you can see, I tend to rank some of these guys in bunches, such as the prospective relievers (Kiker, Strop, Moscoso) the raw, toolsy OF’s (Beltre and Miggy V) and the can’t-K-anybody squad (Poveda, Boscan, Beavan) since they seem to have pretty similar upside at this stage.

After Beavan or Mendonca I think you can pretty much just throw names at the wall in any order you like, theres so much raw upside to choose from.

Morality you can fake. Fun you either have or you don't.

by LSJ on Feb 13, 2010 12:47 AM CST reply actions

Id say lets give Poveda a little longer before declaring him a "can't K anybody"

Before this season he has consistently been a 8+ K/9 guy.

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Feb 13, 2010 9:20 AM CST up reply actions

That's why I have him ahead of Boscan and Beavan.

Morality you can fake. Fun you either have or you don't.

by LSJ on Feb 13, 2010 7:07 PM CST up reply actions

Boscan was doing a pretty good job of k'ing dudes before the injury, fwiw.

And I think putting Poveda ahead of C-Wun and Boscan is pretty silly (especially C-Wun), but time will tell on that.

Well, I pretty much hate Beavan, see.

I forget which prospect guru who said he wasn’t much more than a long reliever (think it was Goldstein on BBTiA awhile back) but I agree. Mediocre pitcher with a first round pedigree.

Morality you can fake. Fun you either have or you don't.

by LSJ on Feb 13, 2010 7:52 PM CST up reply actions

C-Wun sucks

until he can prove he can miss some bats.

Even if he goes to his old mechanics, he may not be able to become a quality ML pitcher, but at least he may have a better chance to miss bats. That may or may not happen.

I view Boscan much like Max

we need to see how he comes back from the injury before getting too down on him.

Favorites to make the mid-season list after failing to make the offseason list

Jose Monegro - 13.9 K/9, 1.9 BB/9 as a 19 yo in 2010. Heavy, low-90’s fastball and developing 12-to-6 curve ball. His prospect status will depend on whether he gets plugged into a starting rotation.

Richard Alvarez – BA saw fit to rank him #12 in the Arizona Rookie League. He should follow the Martin Perez track and pitch as a starter in Spokane at the age of 17. Fastball velocity will dictate how much hype he gets in 2010.

Neil Ramirez
– He was awful in 2009, though his numbers improved month-to-month – 7.13 FIP in June, 5.25 FIP in July, 3.85 FIP in August. If he is healthy and repeats in HIckory, his pitching line should be impressive.

Ramierez is #26

by rentz on Feb 13, 2010 8:52 AM CST up reply actions

NeRa was #26?!?

You guys are friggin’ crazy! Did anyone notice how bad he was in 2009?

Well, since I screwed that one up, I’ll give you my fourth.

Marcus Lemon – Regardless of whether he starts the season in Frisco or Oklahoma, he will be among the youngest players in the league at the age of 22. He’s added weight/strength and tore up the AFL (.343/.389/.627).

by spurdynasty on Feb 13, 2010 9:00 AM CST up reply actions

I certainly didn't vote him 26

He certainly shouldn’t be that high.
I agree on Lemon, I haven’t been ulta high on him like the dtron has but you have to consider just how young he is for his level.

everybody in our system seems young for their level

If I gave Lemon any credit, it would be if he has bulked up a bit and added the pop that we saw in the AZ fall league.

Lemon

He’s better than some give him credit. But yeah you are right, many seem to be young for their level which perhaps makes people dismiss age some.

Considering Lemon's AFL launchpad performance

he’s a guy I’m curious about in 2010. Did he find something?

Most likely to rise by mid-season

Engel Beltre – If he repeats Bakersfield, his hand is fully healed, and he’s added strength during the offseason, then Beltre could finally start to hit for power as has been projected. Improved power will translate to a higher BABIP (he was unlucky with a .283 BABIP in 2009) and provide a hige boost to his anemic 2009 OPS.

Braden Tullis – Young and new to pitching, Tullis looks to be the guy who is most likely to make significant improvements in 2010. He will likely be put on the 4-seamer program and show improved fastball velocity. He also seems likely to start in the pitcher-friendly SAL, so his numbers should sparkle and he will get seen and hyped by the Dirkatron.

Vin Difazio – If he begins 2010 in Bakersfield, then he will benefit from playing in the Cal League which favors patient power hitters. A 900+ OPS catcher will get noticed regardless of his age.

by spurdynasty on Feb 13, 2010 8:56 AM CST reply actions

Ogando and Beltre

With plus stuff and likely limited to the bullpen, the two Dominicans presumably slot alongside Pedro Strop. Three relievers in the Top 15 is usually a sign of a weak minor league system, but I am very excited to see the Rangers with potential difference makers for their bullpen in the upper minors.

by spurdynasty on Feb 13, 2010 9:09 AM CST reply actions

Beltre

With Gutierrez’s suspension opening up a spot in the Frisco rotation for the first roughly 2 months do you think the Rangers will give Beltre a shot to start?

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Feb 13, 2010 9:21 AM CST up reply actions

I'd rather they pitch in the 'pen

their innings were both very minimal last season. Perhaps we can stretch them out later, but I would think their role on this team is with the bullpen.

by NothinG on Feb 13, 2010 10:50 AM CST up reply actions

I hope so with Beltre

OTOH, we have no idea of the level of either of these guys stamina, so…

What's Frisco rotation candidates look like?

I thought Bleier was going to have trouble finding a spot before the Gutz suspension..

by octoberty on Feb 13, 2010 10:59 AM CST up reply actions

Frisco

Perez, Scheppers, Beavan are the locks
Gutierrez will be once his suspension is up
I think Bleier gets the bump as the 5th man with Main not too far behind

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Feb 13, 2010 1:30 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed on the first three

I think that Gomez will be in the rotation as well.

Without Gutierrez in the mix, I think that the fifth spot will go to one of Michael Main, Richard Bleier, and Michael Kirkman. If Main looks strong in Spring Training, I think the organization will bump him to AA so that he doesn’t have to deal with the Cal League again. If Kirkman is deemed not quite ready or if the AAA rotation is over-booked, then I think that he begins in the Frisco. If Kirkman looks strong and Main doesn’t go gangbusters in Spring Training, then I think they default to Bleier.

by spurdynasty on Feb 13, 2010 1:38 PM CST up reply actions

Forgot about Kirkman

Knew I was missing someone. Yeah it doesn’t look like there will be any room for Beltre to start the season.

I agree about Main also. God it will be so nice to get out of that hellhole Bakersfield

Ogando that far below Beltre?

From what I have gathered, Ogando is the one to be excited about..

They're both total wildcards.

We know next to nothing about either dude at this point. You could flip-flop those rankings and I’d believe you.

I just get the feeling Ogando’s a bit more raw at this point, and given all the time they’ve both missed I don’t know if either of them has got time to figure things out.

Also, the difference between 25 and 35 isn’t as great as maybe it seems.
