Sunday Rangers things

Evan Grant has a spring training preview with lots of numbers and quotes. Grant picks three guys who need to rebound from last year, and they're the three most of us would choose, Ian Kinsler, Josh Hamilton and Chris Davis. The quotes from Kinsler and Davis are interesting, given all of the offseason talk about their respective approaches at the plate. Some of the numbers are also telling, check it out.

Jeff Wilson has a piece this morning on Hamilton and his ongoing trials.

So Ian Kinsler

needs to rebound from an OPS+ of 107 as a second baseman?

Since that's down from 133

I think a rebound to closer to that number would be something to hope for.

by Brett Perryman on Feb 14, 2010 12:53 PM CST up reply actions

So you think 133 is repeatable?

you dont think that was simply his career year? His OPS+ during his 4 years in the majors: 105, 108, 133, 107. IMO, he is not a guy you should expect a 125-135 number from. We should expect a 110 number from him and hope he plays defense at the same level.

If anyone is expecting around a 133 from Kinsler they are going to be disappointed. However, maybe he clicks with Hurdle, maybe he has realized that he needs to cut down on the flyballs (pop-ups sometimes). We will see but I believe we witnessed a career year from Kinsler in 2008 and to expect a number like that in 2010 is going to lead to disappointment.

Did you read the article?

Kinsler’s flyball to groundball ratio wasn’t just bad it was historic! There really is room for improvement. I’m as big a defender of Kinsler as anyone and agree that 107 OPS+ from second is better than a lot of teams get but he’s better than that. It’s good to see he knows that too.

He’s always had an uppercut swing but he’s never had this many flyballs which pleasantly means he can be better.

"You promised me, Eckstein, that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I noticed that during the most trying periods of my life, there have only been one set of prints in the sand. Why, when I have needed you most, have you not been there for me?" David Eckstein replied, "Because my little legs had gotten tired, and you were carrying me." And I looked down and saw that I was still carrying David Eckstein.

Then he grounded out weakly to second.

sure did read the article

I just think that people expecting another 2008 season arent going to get it. Im just getting tired of people saying he needs to rebound when his season wasnt bad at all. Do i think he is capable of more? Of course, but to say he needs to rebound from 2009 is not fair.

I was buoyed by the quote where he admitted he needed to fix his problem. He has seemed very stubborn and defensive in the past when it has been brought up.

ummm...

wanting Kinsler to have a better season doesn’t mean he has have better than a 107 OPS+…
It means we would like for him to cut down on the popups and pulling the ball, and wanting him to be a more rounded hitter.

That's how I feel

and why I said 115-120 OPS+ below. I think he can maintain that for several more years if he adjusts his approach. I’m less sanguine about him keeping that high UZR rating from last year, he’ll probably slip back to average. I’ll take the overall package happily if that happens.

Well said.

I think his overall production of the last couple years is just about what we can expect going forward. Fielding somewhere between ’08 and ’09 and offense somewhere between the two balances out to about the same result (honestly maybe a little better).

by philkid3 on Feb 14, 2010 9:10 PM CST up reply actions

That's the wrong way to look at it.

Do you really want a player settling for “good enough?” In that article he says exactly the right things. Sure, I like a 2B with a 107 OPS+ and solid defense. But I’d LOVE a 2B with a 115-120 OPS+ with solid defense who deserves MVP votes, and he’s certainly capable of being that.

I’m not one of those who ragged severely on Kinsler last year despite his well above average play. But I’m certainly excited about the possibilities if he adjust his approach and fulfills his potential.

When did i say "good enough"?

I just think that characterizing it as “rebounding” is simply not correct. To me, that insinuates he had a poor year.

His production dropped a lot

from 2008 to 2009. If he “rebounds” (or whatever word makes you feel better) he’ll do much better than 107 OPS+.

Depends how he gets that 107 OPS+

If hes batting in the 5th hole all season I will gladly take a repeat of last season.

If hes batting leadoff I would rather have his 2007 season where he was a 108 OPS+ but had higher averages and on base percentages

I totally agree. No more of those articles based upon the titles of songs.

And, good riddance.

I think EG has done something here that FrankiePiliere does in his scouting approach. I think it was Frankie that had a chat and I asked about the relative importance of statistics and eyeballs in his approach, and he said that he uses statistics to find out what a player does or doesn’t do but then uses his eyeballs to see how the statistics are compiled.

EG has done that here, it appears. Very welcomed approach.

I absolutely love looking at Chris Davis's numbers now that the season is over.

There can honestly be no way he can do any worse. And he was so bad for so long last year, it had quite an impact on the team. Even marginal improvement on his part will be a huge uptick in the offense and the team as a whole. Bring on 2010 and the year of 950 runs!

Goldstein on Davis

Kevin Goldstein was a guest on Minors and Majors this morning, and the host him Goldstein would take the under or over on Smoak getting to the majors. Goldstein took the over stating that this has more to do with Davis and the adjustments he made last season in the minors than the progress Smoak made.

Wasn't it noneother than Josey Wales

who recently talked about how bad Davis was when he had two strikes on him and how it was such a problem? I talked about it last season and I think I said something about it this past week.

I’ll be sold he’s beginning to turn a corner as a hitter when he walks a lot more than the 7 times he walked in 142 plate appearances upon coming back.

In a related note, I sincerely hope this team gives Max a serious look at 1B in ST.

It has to do with age of the players involved and the fact

that we don’t have a fall back option if Davis craps the bed again.

Max’s problem last year was injury and not the fact that he was in over his head. He also turns 26 in October. I’d like to find a way to keep Max on the team so Wash will feel like he can ph for Salty or Teagarden when necessary.

I think Smoak will be a good player in The Show but I’d like to see him master AAA. Smoak’s problems last year in AAA had nothing to do with injury.

Turn that question on you.

Just what in EG’s article makes you think that Chris Davis has turned the corner? Please don’t tell me the David Price AB.

by Chris Hanes on Feb 14, 2010 1:57 PM CST up reply actions

I guess I have no meaningful reply to you then.

I wouldn’t say the David Price AB was the one thing, but I think it was an indicator of what is different about Chris Davis before and after his demotion.

He went to AAA. He did the following things:
(1) Flattened his swing.
(2) Looked to hit more up the middle.

He took those two things to the plate when he came back. When he faced Price, he found not only did those two things get him back to the majors but he was able to use those adjustments to scale back his swing in a 2-strike situation that ultimately ended with a hit the opposite way.

So, yeah, I think Grant has hit on something here. I think it was an incredibly astute observation.

Just out of curiosity, and because I’d like to keep the discussion going, what, in your opinion, would constitute mastery of AAA for Smoak?

And if he hits that point, where do the Rangers go from there?

It’s not like Max embarrassed himself in The Show back in 2008 with 55 plate appearance (.360ish obp?)..

I think Max has a better chance to impact the major league team this year but that Smoak will ultimately have the better major league career. Make sense?

I would agree in most cases

This isn’t one of those however because Josey has made it a point everytime Smoaks name gets mentioned that Smoak needs to conquer AAA first before we count on him as a fallback option should David flop again. Yet here Josey says he wants Max to get a serious look at 1B in spring so that he can be that fallback option should Davis flop. Throwing out the fact that Smoak is a natural 1B and Max has very little time there, I find it odd he wants a guy who has thrown up lines of 243/ 293/ 432 and 234/ 323/ 336 at an older age over a guy whos considered a top prospect in all of baseball and had a line of 244/ 363/ 360 last year.

just saying

I like the positional flexibility Max would give the roster as well. If Salty or Tea is primary, and there’s true back up (somebody who’ll only get 1 start a week on average), then Wash and most manager would almost never pinch hit for their catchers. If Max is the right-handed bat off the bench/25th man, it frees Wash to pinch hit more for Tea or Salty late in the game

Smoak's problem in AAA had nothing to do with injury? You ever try to hit a baseball or swing a golf club with a strained oblique?

Rather bold statement.

Hey if Josey can do everyday things with his head up his ass

Whats an oblique strain compared to that?

Yeah, I pointed this out too

You probably didn’t notice because Josey ignored it, as he normally does things like science and facts and correctness.

My single problem with Evan's article is that the Rangers were third worse in AL OBP total

The fact you can’t get on base with two strikes isn’t the problem. They couldn’t get on base period. .320 isn’t going to cut it.

Then he grounded out weakly to second.

by WyoRanger on Feb 14, 2010 2:22 PM CST reply actions

Why isn't that the problem?

Strikeouts were clearly an issue for this team last year so if the team can change those 2 strike counts from being strikeouts to getting on base, that’s going to help out the OBP a lot.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

They are capable

In 2008 they were 2nd in the AL in OBP. Even if you exclude Bradley’s league leading OBP they would have still been second. Otherwise it was pretty much the same group of players but:

2008 with 2 strikes
.280 OBP
9.4 walk rate
.322 BAbip

2009 with 2 strikes
.240 OBP
7.7 walk rate
.291 BAbip

The Hamilton story is really tiresome

He’s all about God, then he isn’t, then he is, then he isn’t, now he is again. Who flippin’ cares? Just go back to hitting the ball hard on a consistent basis.

God you're annoying

If someone makes a post or references an article that mentions spiritualism or emotion, we can be sure you’ll be there to piss on the flame.

Has Hamilton really been shoved in your face? Are you distracted by a huge cross that I’m not seeing?

He has been shoved in our faces

But it’s really not the spiritual aspect that bothers me. I hope his walk with God works for him and he gets his life turned around, I really do. It just gets tiresome to hear about anything as much as we hear and read about Hamilton and his off the field stuff. It’s like the media is just out of stuff to write about.

Unfortunately

it remains an important topic. You cannot write about Hamilton in any meaningful way without mentioning it. That’s like asking Jackie O how she liked Dallas and expecting her to forget her hubby being shot.

strikeouts

Hurdle was he Rockies hitting instructor for 5 years starting from 1997. From 1998 to 2001, the Rockies had the fewest Ks in the NL.

Expect the Rangers to put the ball in play more than last year, especially with 2 strikes.

I think sending out a plug for something in that context is pretty lame, considering we get the newsletter for baseball musings and breaking news, and it’s the reason I don’t like the stuff about his kids, but I can’t imagine getting upset or offended.

The stuff about his kids really got to me at one time

when we had just lost a baby when my wife was 5 months along. We have since had a little girl, now 6, so I understand his point, but it was still really fucking tough to take at the time.

I told him about that stuff like a year ago and he just told me well I can unsubscribe..

heh. W/e I want the Rangers news..I just don’t care about your personal life and didn’t see that listed in the fine print whenever I signed up for the newsletter.

I also mentioned the DirectTV thing last year to him, and this (before he even sent it). I wonder who said something that got him to apologize..cause he obviously doesn’t care about the average fan or subscriber.

by Mike E on Feb 14, 2010 9:04 PM CST up reply actions

Unsubscribing

Well, I think he did say at the end that you do have the choice to unsubscribe.

Anyhow, Adam does the same thing on this blog.

by Chris Hanes on Feb 14, 2010 9:08 PM CST up reply actions

The difference was in this e-mail he said it like if you were so offended that you don't want to get it anymore, though I won't pump DTV ever again

In the personal e-mail to me a year or so ago, it was more like ‘oh well, if you don’t like it then unsubscribe..i’m going to keep doing it’

It was just uncalled for. And heh..yeah and I’m such a big fan of Adam’s.

by Mike E on Feb 14, 2010 9:12 PM CST up reply actions

Except...

he’s right. It’s his newsletter. If you don’t like the content, unsubscribe. He doesn’t have to, nor should he, change anything because you don’t like a certain aspect of what he decides to do with his newsletter.

Seriously, why would you bitch about something, ESPECIALLY something that is free for you to use, just because you don’t one or two things? Is it really that hard to ignore an email or two?

It doesn’t make sense. You have an easy option to avoid said content. Don’t read it.

by ghostofErikThompson on Feb 14, 2010 11:00 PM CST up reply actions

I didn’t ask him to stop, just simply told him I did not know that was a part of the package when I signed up. And no, he doesn’t mark which emails in his subject are about his family, and since I don’t want to ignore the Rangers news I have to open and begin reading before I find out it’s about how he spent his Father’s Day.

by Mike E on Feb 15, 2010 12:58 PM CST up reply actions

What exactly was "uncalled for"?

In your evidently not so humble opinion.

by mgb5 on Feb 14, 2010 11:38 PM CST up reply actions

His response to me was what I was referring to was uncalled for. I wasn’t telling him to stop or anything, just how I felt and he somewhat went off and insulted me in a response to that.

Then for him to apologize for almost the same thing cause someone else complained..a year later.. is somewhat offending in itself heh. And take into account he didn’t know who I was at the time, so I was just a random subscriber that he acted inappropriately towards.

Not having seen either your message or his reply...

… I can’t really comment on how either of you handled the interchange. I would point out that it is much easier to misunderstand or misinterpret the tone of an e-mail (or other textual message), lacking clues like body language and voice tone/level. So while you may not have intended it to come across as critical/hostile and Jamey may not have meant for his response to come across as hostile, one or both of you may have taken it that way.

by mgb5 on Feb 15, 2010 5:34 PM CST up reply actions

uncalled for?

it’s his effing newsletter. are you making a false advertising claim or something? how exactly have you been harmed. seems to me your life is probably more of a waste of time than reading a post about his kids.

Vexing

The context was obvious (something in it for you, okay), the benefit to readers was spelled out. But then you can just delete if not interested.

But isn’t the real big picture that someone writing a newsletter has the floor with the newsletter? That’s…what it means to write it.

You should offer Amway in the next NMLR. See if people get so offended they forget the entire listserv concept again.
