Good stuff
Hes definitely a guy to keep an eye on next year as a 17 year old in Spokane
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I'll never understand it...
Why not just ink a Mike Bascik (known quantity/quality with experience and track record) rather than a pie-in-the-sky prospect?
PROSPECT, damnit?
Is it just the mystery/intrigue?
Or, is it the up-side that one may super-impose on the unknown/untested player?
Is it the antithesis of the “devil that you know vs. the devil that you don’t know” bromide that leads to this fascination?
Just kill me.

So is your stance

Probably. It's pretty likely Scheppers will be in the majors this years.
Pro baseball has always been a dream, so this is pretty freakin’ cool out here. -- Tim Steggall, undrafted Rangers minor leaguer.
It's just that....
Alvarez seems ordinary for that profile. Doesn’t he? Go.
Don't ever let your sister move in with you. - thedirkatron
Do you mean: ordinary for a major leaguer?
Compared to a major leaguer he is ordinary, but he’s 16 and it’s yet to be seen what he’ll be when he’s 20, 21, 22 and ready for a major league tryout.
Do you think the profile should’ve been about major leaguers? Is that your deal?

Notice where Jason ranks him
BA ranks him at #30 in the system. He is certainly a question mark at this point. Not sure how familiar you are with the readership here, but there are a lot of readers who have a nuanced, advanced understanding of prospects, and sometimes posts don’t involve the very best or one of the 4-5 best prospects in the system.
I can imagine that it seems over the top, but the conversation here and around Rangers outlets these days is often pretty advanced. This would qualify as a topic more suited for those who have really done their homework and know their Rangers shit. Those types are interested in items and players past the handful of headline makers.

I don’t know that Adam would have added this to the front page if he were here today. I think that Alvarez is an interesting player, so I put it on the front page, rather than only creating a fanshot and keeping it over on the side. That fact that things are really slow right now also contributed.

We like to learn about the unknown because they’re unkown.
There are already a wealth of stats and news coverage out there about the guys in the majors and even most of the upper level guys (like, say, Kiker and Beavan), but when there’s a highly touted youngster just starting to make his bones, it’s interesting to read and article about him and learn a little about the guy.

Because the show great potential at a young age.
A guy like Alvarez is remarkable because he’s succeeded at a level you wouldn’t usually expect someone his age to perform, let alone succeed.
From what I can gather my guess is that scouts, coaches, and minor league observers have seen something in him that makes them think he might be something special someday.
Just like in any other sport (remember all the Lebron hype?), people are always interested in who’s NEXT.
For most of us hardcore fans we’ve already heard all about most of our minor leaguers, so to get an in depth piece on a greasy young bucket of potential like Alvarez is interesting to us.

Neftali Feliz was a largely unknown prospect when the Rangers traded for him. It’s fun when the kids turn into big leaguers. Most wash out; it’s the nature of the game. It’s really fun when a kid you’ve followed for three or four debuts and, perhaps, succeeds in the bigs. It adds another dimension to my enjoyment of the game.

this isnt coming from a pro scout or something, but mike bascik sucks, and has for years. The rangers have a history of spotting young LA talent, specifically from Venzuela and it turning to gold. see martin perez. see scouting even before they signed on feliz and andrus. see font, see profar, see alverez.
BA and every other respected prospect analysis says the rangers are the deepest in talent in all of mlb, and that comes from our scouting and plucking of young awesomely talented kids who may someday be the next pedro. we have the deepest system from getting 3 or 4 guys like alverez for the cost of one or 2 mike bascik or slightly better b/c bascik was aweful 2 or 3 years ago and i assume you meant you know, some1 decent in place of a high priced 16 year old. if thats what you meant b/c what did gdawg say? i forgot…

Google is a powerul drug
"Big whoop, wanna fight about it?"
by lost in space on Feb 14, 2010 7:54 PM CST up reply actions
Well
Some people don’t care about prospects.
A lot of fans, particularly the more “hard core” fans, do.
You might as well ask why, for example, so many people are interested in the NFL draft. Or recruiting.
It is knowing about what is coming. It is about knowing what the strengths and weaknesses of the entire organization are, not just the major leaguers. And it is always enticing because the element of the unknown includes the possibility of greatness, of hoping that maybe one of these guys can be another Roger Clemens.
The difference with baseball, as compared to the NFL or the NBA, is that the NFL and NBA don’t have minor league systems. The college ranks are, for all intents and purposes, the minor leagues for those leagues. But with baseball, you can follow a guy up through the system over a number of years, see him develop, and project how he may fit into the team long-term.
by Adam J. Morris on Feb 14, 2010 7:55 PM CST up reply actions 4 recs
I agree, and just asking why the fascination?
Is there an EXTENSIVE system in place that puts these Alvarez’s on a loftier perch than others?
Don't ever let your sister move in with you. - thedirkatron
Their skill set puts them on a loftier perch
Not everyone can go out and throw a baseball ~90 mph. Much less control it and throw other pitches. And its even rarer to find a kid his age doing these things.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
But Alvarez is throwing high 80's, right?
Damn it, I’m not trying to argue, just find out. High 80’s=big time?
Don't ever let your sister move in with you. - thedirkatron
Ok, now I know this is some sort of wind-up
Using bigsteve’s own bit against him.
I wasn't referring to Alvarez specifically
But the “~” usually means “around” so I was saying “throw a baseball around 90 mph”
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I think that's a good question
Because of his age and build, there is still the potential that he could throw harder as he matures. As Jason outlines, what makes him really intriguing is that he has a lot more going for him than just his velocity. Therefore if he does add a little extra, he could be something special.
A pitcher like Alvarez becomes more interesting if you look backwards a bit. When we ask how certain pitchers weren’t absolute phenoms, how they were obtained relatively cheaply, the answer is that they looked a lot like Alvarez does now. Martin Perez is a good example of this. He didn’t consistently hit 90 mph when the Rangers signed him, and he’s now, at the age of 18, considered one of the couple best – if not the best – left handed prospect in baseball.
by Brett Perryman on Feb 14, 2010 8:09 PM CST up reply actions
You didn't answer my question
I don’t understand what Mike Bacsik has to do with this. Are you saying that the Rangers should sign several Bacsiks, guys in their late-20s/early-30s who have never really made it in the majors, instead of spending money on acquiring talent through the draft or international free agency?
by Adam J. Morris on Feb 14, 2010 8:07 PM CST up reply actions
Pulled...
a known quality/quantity pitcher out of the hat just as an illustration. What is the fascination with an unknown commodity(Alvarez) over a known commodity(Bascik)? I’m just asking, and not trying to increase the server load. I could’ve picked anyone, Bascik came to mind. Is the fascination the antithesis of the old saw “the devil you know is better than the devil you don’t know”? I thought it was a straightforward question.
Don't ever let your sister move in with you. - thedirkatron
Okay
I’m still confused.
Are you wanting to know why there isn’t more talk about Bacsik, for example, on this board, compared to prospects?
It is probably because everyone knows what Bacsik, for example, is. He’s not a major league caliber pitcher. He’s not in the Ranger organization. He has zero chance of impacting the Rangers going forward.
Or are you asking why the Rangers aren’t trying to sign Bacsik?
That’s what made your original post so confusing…it didn’t really make much sense, and to the extent that sense could be made of it, it didn’t really make any sense.

You don’t seem to understand that everyone you draft or everyone you sign from latin america is an unknown. Known commodities are not going to play in your lower minors. thedirkatron helped me out...
but if you want to add to it, what is the fuckin’ fascination with the unknown/prospect player. WTF?
Don't ever let your sister move in with you. - thedirkatron
Whats the fascination?
Cause that unknown may turn into Albert Pujols or Roger Clemens, or Alex Rodriguez. Because at one point those guys were unknowns. And as fans, hardcore ones like most on here are, to follow a guy from rookie league to short season to A ball to AA and then AAA is pretty freaking cool. If all you know or care about is the major league team then you don’t understand. But most on here know and care about more than just the major league team

This is hilarity?
Getting 50 responses of people scratching their heads, trying to be nice in regard to nonsensical objections is some kind of a prank or something?

Yes.
He’s trying to see how far he can string it out. We, as always, are doing a great job of feeding it.

Known/unknown
Richard Alvarez wasn’t an unknown to the Rangers scouts when they signed him. We’re just getting acquainted, but the Rangers probably know him pretty well.

This may not apply, b/c its on topic but:
isnt this part just awesome:
The Venezuela native actually starred in the 2005 Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
"It was a good experience, and it was beautiful," said Alvarez. "It was the first time I’d ever been to the United States."
Alvarez performed well on the big stage, too.
"Back in those days, I was also a hitter," he explained. "I pitched against Curacao and shut them down. I also hit a grand slam in that game. And I pitched against Japan and hit a two-run home run."
The pitcher Alvarez faced from Curacao?
"The pitcher from Curacao that day just signed with Texas for more than a million dollars," he said. "They signed him as a shortstop. Jurickson Profar."
I can't help it. I’m an asshole.
-brettgardner on Jul 7, 2009 10:55 PM EDT
When those two
are both in the majors, we need Nike to make a “Destiny” commercial about them.
"If the Saints can reach the Superbowl, the Rangers can reach the World Series." - PhilKid
The Animated Ballpark in Arlington
Especially after Profar hits the game winning homerun
and Alvarez pitches a complete game shut out, or am I getting ahead of myself?
No silly
it has to be before Curacao and Venezuela face off in the finals of the 2018 WBC after the Rangers won the World Series the year before.

That's not what I'm saying.
It seems to me that he is always trying to make everyone happy. Maybe it’s the European part of him, but he always wants to make his fans happy. He’s really proud and wants Jerry to look good, Cuban to look good, and the Mavs to look good. That’s why he wants to be the MVP out there tonight.

I kinda would like him to try something like Bosh did earlier

I meant that ATHF characters pop up in TV commercials and, most disgustingly, on Scott Van Pelt’s ESPN radio show, among others.
