Prediction
Milan wins tomorrow, Real ends up winning the tournament.
Oh, and...
Madrid 3 – 1 Lyon
Bayern 2 – 0 Fiorentina
Arsenal 1 – 1 Porto
United will win
Arsenal is going to lose especially if Arshavin can’t go
We need to not always make hard work out of sex- Rick Carlisle.
Ugh, it's even worse than previously thought
out completely tomorrow: Gallas, Song, Arshavin, Eduardo and Almunia
Add that to Van Persie, Djourou and Gibbs and you’re talking about five members of the preferred lineup at the least, maybe six or seven. I guess that leaves something like:
Nasri-Bendtner-Rosicky
Fabregas-Diaby-Denilson
Clichy-Vermaelen-Campbell-Sagna
Fabianski
with Ramsey, Walcott and Eboue as the only good options off the bench. Hopefully they can limit the damage.

Allons Lyon!
Since I’ve been playing them in Football Manager 2010, I’ve gotten a bit attached to Lyon. I’d love nothing more today than to see them knock the crap out of Spain’s version of the Yankees…

And they win!
Should be a great return leg at the Bernabeu in 2 weeks.

It was a fantastic strike by Makoun
Should’ve won by 2 or 3
We need to not always make hard work out of sex- Rick Carlisle.
Yeah
I watched the match last night, and I think Makoun just got the ball, and figured, “hey, nobody’s marking me, why the hell not?”
I was very impressed with Lyon’s defending- Madrid had their chances, but it seemed like every time they came close, one of Lyon’s back four would clear it. Couldn’t believe Boumsong played that well- I remembered him from his stint in the EPL, and he was not that good. Hugo Lloris is amazing- probably playing as well as any keeper still in the Champions League. It’s no wonder he’s the new #1 for France.

Get down on your knees and thank the soccer gods

Barry scrabbles one in for the draw ...
after City had given up the lead while up a man. We s.u.c.k.
Beat Liverpool at home and all the baloney hype starts all over again. No way this team finishes top-4.
Rangers pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report on Thursday, February 18.
I guess you can say that
but they are still alone in fourth with a game in hand, and that win would put them in really good position with 11/12 to play. Also, Stoke is a pain in the ass to play, can be hard to look good against them.

So
That late AC goal kinda stung but 3 ‘away’ goals in pocket is pretty huge going back to OT, right?
Rangers pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report on Thursday, February 18.
It's massive.
Thought United would lose something like 2-1 or 1-0 in Milan given their hilariously poor history in the San Siro…United should beat them without too much hassle at OT.

Fabianski 2 - 1 Arsenal - 51st minute
Rangers pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report on Thursday, February 18.
Arsenal was full of suck today
but Fabianski needs to be put down Old Yeller style, that was inexcusable.
We need to not always make hard work out of sex- Rick Carlisle.
What happened to Mannone??
I remember him having a couple of fantastic games and then he disappeared.
Also, if you saw the interview with Fabregas post-game…the guy’s practically gone to Barca already.
He was getting fouled practically every time he touched it.
Hopefully a strong finish or a Chamakh signing can convince him to stay one more year but, I wouldn’t blame him if he left.
As far as Mannone, he just signed a new contract and was on the bench so if Almunia can’t go on Saturday hopefully he gets a shot.
We need to not always make hard work out of sex- Rick Carlisle.
x
He was getting fouled practically every time he touched it.
That’s probably what he’s pissed about. At least with Barcelona, there are plenty of other people to hack to death. Arsenal could use someone with a bit of fire who’ll actually “retaliate” when guys like Fabregas are getting kicked to pieces. I understand why you guys didn’t buy Cana (he doesn’t exactly fit into your system), but he’s the type of player I’m talking about.
My feelings about Arsenal have changed so significantly over the past few years. After Vieira, Keown and the rest of the squad that I really hated left, they’ve become this hilariously soft team that United/Chelsea treat like their little brother trying to beat them in a game of 1-on-1. Personally, I don’t even “hate” Arsenal anymore…it’s sad because at it’s peak, the United-Arsenal rivalry was remarkably fierce.
I heard about this. thx - wondered what he did
I quite watching when we went down 1-0 so it musta come after I cut out. He’s gonna get suspended for that – the cheapshot looks pretty obvious.
The dude is toast. He’s a tree on the field. He’s delusional if he thinks the French coach would want to include him in the WC. Surely France isn’t that desperate. sheesh
Rangers pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report on Thursday, February 18.
Already been charged for violent conduct.
He’ll miss Liverpool-Stoke-Chelsea if he doesn’t appeal.
What’s funny is that Domenech has said that, as long as Vieira plays games for City, he’ll captain the French side. I really think Domenech has a dossier of incriminating photos of the French FA because no-one that incompetent should have lasted as long as he has.
He's fine with the ball - skillz and vision-wise ...
but he can’t move around on the field – probably why he’s so pissed at a terrier like Whelan for Stoke. He’s tall – which is handy on CK’s – which is why I think Mancini likes him.
We got this tall 19-yr-old Norwegian-Somalian kid named Abdi Ibrahim who can actually move around in midfield and run all day. We should get this kid some PT while PV’s out suspended. But we won’t, because Mancini probably doesn’t trust him to win set-piece air battles. bleh

Everton...Wow.
First and second team in the standings in two straight league matches. Crazy. I missed the first half of the match (stupid EST vs CT listings on ESPN), but Everton really did seem the better team while I was watching.
What is going to be done about Berbatov? Is it SAF’s fault for not building a better scheme for him to work with or Berbatov’s fault for not working hard enough in the system? Either way, it doesn’t seem like the issue is going away any time soon…
If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?
JD: Eddie Guardado.
Eh?
Berbatov was probably United’s best player today. He can’t play much due to the 4-3-3 that United play in Europe and tough prem games and the injury he’s been trying to play through all year. As far as the overall problem goes, it’s partly Berbatov’s fault and partly the system he’s been put in.
Everton were undoubtedly the better team. The entire back 4 was a sack of shit (again) today.
Sorry, my comments came off wrong.
I think he’s one of your best players, but SAF doesn’t seem to trust him, the media swarms every time he doesn’t play well or gets pulled early, and he doesn’t exactly seem to be a fan favorite.
Do you think they should sell Berbatov to try to find a better player for the system?

I have no idea.
I don’t know what our financial situation is this summer and I don’t know what you could get for him. He’s in his late 20’s, has a sizable contract and appears to have a knee problem. Perfect world? Yes, I’d like them to cut their losses and find someone more appropriate for their system, but I kind of doubt that’s possible at this point.

As a follower of EPL soccer
for about the last 3 or 4 years, I can honestly say this is the most excited I’ve ever been about Everton other than that run to the FA Cup Final last year. Winning two games against the leagues tope 2 teams (granted they were at home) sandwiched around a win against a good Sporting Lisbon team is huge imo. If Moyes can get this team back into Europe after all they’ve had to go through this year, he should definitely get high consideration for coach of the year.

Yup
When you go through all those games, there worst performance was against Wigan. When you go through a situation like that and your worst performance was in a 1-0 win over Wigan (granted they did lose to Liverpool in a close game), you have to be playing some great soccer.
As for Donovan, it looks like he has finally found his perfect fit in this league. It looks like he’s far more comfortable in England than he ever was in Germany. I just wish there was some way he could stay longer…

Walton fucked us a week ago too.
Don’t know where he came from but he’s utterly incompetent.
Liverpool
is suddenly back in pretty big trouble. They are basically only a point and a game behind City, who still has the best position, but they are essentially back in 7th now, and they have no more games left against the other 3rd/4th spot contenders and still have to play both Man Utd and Chelsea. I guess their overall schedule is pretty easy, so they just have to focus on their own game. But there is zero margin for error. Only one of the other three has to get hot to knock them out.
City would still look like the favorites to me to get a spot, but they do still have to play the rest of the top seven still, five of their twelve remaining. That’s pretty tough, even with Tevez back. Though Tottenham is kind of the same thing, five of their last eleven are against the top eight (and since Everton is number eight and they play them next, that’s pretty tough). I’ve been dismissing Aston Villa this whole time, but they only have Everton, Chelsea and City remaining with 12 games left.
I’m really looking forward to Chelsea-City next weekend, get to root for City for maybe the only time this season.

City's starting 11 today
At Stoke, they’re starting 6 players whose natural positions are along the back 4 (Richards, Onuoha, Lescott, Kompany, Zabaleta, Bridge), a holding mid (Barry) and Ireland, Bellamy and Adebayor. This game is going to be abysmal to watch for poor shroom.

Wenger:
’’I’m not very happy with the tackle. We know what we are expecting, a battle everywhere, but we have now lost three players on horrendous tackles and I refuse to believe it’s always coincidence.
‘’I don’t believe it when you are hit as many times as we are. I just believe in what I see and when you see a player getting injured like that it’s not acceptable. Commitment is right, but that is not right.
‘’All the questions I get in press conferences about we don’t fancy the physical side of it, that’s the result.’’
Fabregas:
‘’In five years I’ve seen three of them, Abou [Diaby], Eduardo and now Aaron. What can I say. It’s difficult. You could say we are not protected enough. We are sometimes victims. I’m not complaining, football is like that.
‘’There are things that are a little too much but three times in five years is a little bit too much.’’
I would guess that at least a third of the club games I watch intently are Arsenal games, and I have only about five years of really following this league in particular to draw from, so my view is no doubt skewed. But I watch them go out every week and attempt to chop of Fabregas’ legs, and I’m amazed that this hasn’t happened to him yet. Clubs like Stoke, Bolton (under previous management), Fulham disgust me because, at least from my naive perspective, it reminds me of the war or bad HS football movie where the coach is demanding dirty play, and his people are basically forced to try to destroy the opposition in the dirtiest way possible. The expression on Shawcross’ face after that play was obviously one of devastation, but it struck me as that of a guy who was coached to push to the limit, and couldn’t believe what just resulted from it.
I may be off base because I see the way Fabregas, Van Persie, Walcott, etc. on Arsenal are treated more than some other finesse talents on other clubs, but I really think that anyone who thinks that certain teams and players aren’t targeted by certain other teams and players – and that it isn’t cheered on by managers and fans right up to the point that it tips over the edge and everything goes horribly wrong – is kidding himself. And I think that it is the most disgusting thing about developing an interest in this league, having to put up with that culture fostered in England.
chop of Fabregas’ legs
meant to say, chop off
Also, I meant to mention there, Wenger is viewed as a whiner because he does whine about a lot of things, so along with the fact that he’s responsible for collecting finesse players and coaching a finesse style, I think that the assumption is that people should just roll their eyes when he says something like that. But I just don’t see how you can watch some of their games and think that what he’s saying there has no basis unless you are rooting against them such that you can’t see straight.
by Brett Perryman on Feb 27, 2010 4:47 PM CST up reply actions
Arsene's playing the victim card too much for my liking. These catastrophic injuries do have a habit of happening to Arsenal, but rash challenges happen against everyone.
When Ronaldo was at United he took as much if not more abuse on a weekly basis than Fabregas. He held up because, frankly, the guy’s a physical specimen and a freak of nature.
Arsene’s been in England long enough to know that this:
a guy who was coached to push to the limit
Is how it goes with most teams in the PL. The pace at which football is played in the PL is what makes it infinitely more entertaining (and potentially risky) than any other brand of football anywhere else on the planet. To complain about something that’s so built-in to the English game and then to act like everyone’s picking on your team when it happens to all the teams of your caliber (see Pool fans and Torres’ litany of injuries or United fans when Rooney had his metatarsal stamped on and broken twice). If you watch La Liga or Serie A, you’ll see that players are exponentially dirtier in those leagues. They take way more cheap shots at players.
Two things
I personally don’t think that anyone is “picking on” Arsenal specifically. I think that the English answer to dealing with teams that are better than you is to play recklessly and let the cards fall where they may, and I think that this result happens to Arsenal more than the other top teams because they are viewed as more physically susceptible. Also, no one is looking to cause this kind of injury, but it is the recklessness that causes it. I am not a soccer player, so I don’t have that level of insight or perspective that folks who have played do. But I know from playing hockey and american football that you can play your ass off without making reckless plays that are likely to cause serious damage to the other players. I think that there are a lot of parallels with hockey in this regard, and players who are willing to play a dangerous style are just not tolerated, I don’t think. In England, it seems like the thing to do is shrug your shoulders, say you feel awful about what happened like no one had any control over their actions, and move on knowing that there are no serious or lasting repercussions. There is no accepted way to retaliate since you can’t pound the guy’s face in, and the league doesn’t appear interested in awarding biting penalties to the player or manager.
In La Liga at least, I don’t think guys are running around snapping guys’ legs in two with the frequency we’re seeing in the premier league, are they? There are some really dirty players in Italy, so I wouldn’t deny that it is similarly bad there.

I think that the English answer to dealing with teams that are better than you is to play recklessly and let the cards fall where they may, and I think that this result happens to Arsenal more than the other top teams because they are viewed as more physically susceptible.
Yes, Arsenal are more susceptible. That’s unavoidable when you dominate possession in every game and have, let’s be honest, a ton of lightweight players. Opposing teams do make it a point to harangue guys like Fabregas, yes, but what I’m saying is that it’s no different from teams who make it a point to bully Torres or teams who made it a point to foul the shit out of Ronaldo.
A lot depends on your definition of “reckless”. Today’s challenge, for example, was not reckless in my eyes. He was going for a ball that was there to be won. Ramsey got to it first by a split-second, and disaster ensued. If you take away a player’s instinct to pursue that kind of ball, especially a defender, you’re essentially neutering them. It’s hard to compare reckless football/hockey plays and soccer plays because those plays in football/hockey almost always have some sort of intent to “punish”, which appears to me to be the mitigated American term for “injure”. With the Shawcross challenge, there was no intent there.
As far as punishment goes, it should depend on the nature of the challenge as opposed to the severity of the injury that resulted. If you honestly evaluated that challenge and then compared it to Gallas’ tackle on Davies a few weeks ago, which one would you think is worse? I do agree that the punishment for terrible tackles should be harsher though.
Gallas' challenge was bad, I thought
The two seem very similar to me, actually. It’s not fair for me to suggest that I understand the subtleties of that sort of tackle, but I really thought that Wenger’s reaction to questions about Gallas’ tackle was somewhat disingenuous, and my gut says defense of this one is similar. I think that an elite athlete who plays a sport from early childhood has an inherent feel for what is happening and a near split second sense of how to slightly preempt, avert or adjust certain actions that would cause them danger of harming themselves and that that carries over to your interaction with another player. And I think that in both of those cases, if the player were endangering themselves the way they were endangering the other player, they would have slightly flinched, and that the specific lack of abandon in those two plays isn’t necessary to play an effective, hyperfast defensive game. I guess maybe I’m wrong, though.
And regarding league punishment, of course it has to be based on the nature and perceived intent of the play, not the result. Taking this play out of it, I just don’t think that this league takes horrendous tackles seriously enough, particularly when they don’t result in major injury.
by Brett Perryman on Feb 27, 2010 9:23 PM CST up reply actions
I disagree with that.
Not to simplify it down to see ball kick ball, but in a situation like that, it’s damn near impossible to pull out at the last minute. I’ll condemn the guy if his tackling form is poor (studs showing, leading leg high, feet off the ground, lunging in etc.), but Shawcross’s studs were down and he didn’t lunge. He simply mistimed a challenge for what was essentially a 50-50 ball. Without the injury, it’s a borderline red (I’ve seen worse called a yellow), but the ref had no choice but to show him a red because of the injury and the potential for retaliation from Arsenal players.
I agree with LiamP...
…that all of the skilled attacking players in the EPL get this sort of treatment. It’s probably worse for Arsenal in that they’re seen as a team that doesn’t have the guys to make you pay for going after their stars, but every star gets it to some degree. It’s part of what makes EPL teams successful in CL-they know how to neutralize the big offensive weapons from the other teams. For the bigger clubs, that involves having truly talented defensive players like Essien and Mascherano, who know how to be physical without being dirty. But for the clubs at the bottom of the table, they have to accomplish the same goal without the talent, so what do you expect?
On a somewhat related note, this is part of why Drogba fits so well in the EPL. Sure, he flops, but he’s physical enough to take the beating a star offensive player is going to take. I think it’s also part of the reason they let a talented player like Wright-Phillips leave, even though he would fill a need on this current team.
I get that it’s very frustrating to you and it reminds me in some ways of the Baltimore-Pittsburgh NFL game where the rookie RB Mendenhall shot his mouth the week before and ended up getting a shoulder injury that took him out for the year (a hit from Ray Lewis). Both of those teams plan to play a physical game and beat you into submission. Though they toe the line, it is part of the game, and I’m not sure changing the game is the answer. Maybe slightly adjusting the rules or how they are enforced would be the answer, but I worry about going too far.

Again, the NFL comparison is off.
Mendenhall had a bounty on his head in that game and you knew that he would inevitably take some monster and potentially dirty hits. However poorly you think of Pulis, Shawcross didn’t go into the game with the mentality of “Alright. I’m gonna wreck one of these kids”.

Ok, I understand Arsenal fans' frustrations.
But the tackle itself wasn’t horrific and Shawcross isn’t a dirty player. If you watch video of the challenge (and it’s hard to do so), he goes to kick the ball and Ramsey just beats him to it. Ramsey’s leg was firmly planted and really, any sort of forceful blow to his leg could’ve done serious damage.
I thought it was pretty bad
but you’re right, I could only bring myself to watch it once.
by Brett Perryman on Feb 27, 2010 7:39 PM CST up reply actions
The result was awful.
The challenge itself really wasn’t anything egregious. If you look around different clubs’ forums, you’ll see that most people would agree on that.

Forget the perception that you’re rewarding him despite the most horrific play all season. Is this really good for the player to put him on the stage like this immediately afterward? I suppose if you could protect him from media attention and keep him on the bench, maybe it’s as good of a way to get his mind on something else as to keep him on the team. But it just seems like it disregards what is best for the player. This isn’t their last friendly in which they can evaluate him or anything.

Blackburn-Liverpool
So Fat Sam says earlier this week that Rafa’s been making too much of Blackburn being a dirty team.
Blackburn today: 4 yellow cards (one of which could have been a red) and oh, yeah, they lead the league in fouls committed.
No, nothing to those allegations at all, Sam. Shut the fuck up and eat another pie.

Make that 5
And surprise, surprise, it’s El-Hadji Diouf.
Man, I wish we’d put this match away.

Saaame old kooopites...
…allways whining
A fan of a team who has Mascherano on his team cannot talk about dirty play from the opponent. I’m sorry, but his inclusion on the team excludes you from talking about dirty play. Just like it excludes me from any argument about
Thank the ref for the disparity in fouls. One of those yellows was an idiotic handball from Olsson. The other was for N’Zonzi tossing aside a silly Spaniard who was trying to get a foul that was already called. Yellows, sure, but nothing worth a dirty tag.
I don’t like Big Fat Sam, but to say that a team is dirty is intimating that they go out there and purposefully bring guys down. These aren’t the Vinny Jones Wimbledon out there, there are just a few guys out there that are just not that good (Andrews, Grella Chimbonda (yes he should’ve been sent off, the dumb-ass). And when certain players like Diouf (whom I dislike intensely) who is a tosser is in a hostile environment it makes it look worse than it is.
But it’s the cool thing to do to rail on Blackburn for being dirty. I mean ever since Mourinho tagged us as being so 5 years ago that’s never been taken down. We’ve dealt with the calls going against us on both sides because of this tag so it’s nothing new.
What is new, though, is for a knowledgeable fan to rely on lazy journo talk to formulate an argument. You can do better than that, RC
What's the rumpus?
Ergh...incomplete thought
Meant to end the first paragraph with the fact that having Allardyce on my team excludes me from railing on HoofBall tactics…
I hate it when a good rant gets derailed by a quick trigger finger
What's the rumpus?
N'Zonzi
Should have been sent off- Reina got a red for doing the exact same thing to Arjen Robben a few years back, in pretty much the same situation. You’d think Lucas would have learned to stay down and act like he’d been shot, which is what Robben did, but no, he has to get up and get in N’Zonzi’s face. :)
As for my comments, I was writing those during the match, so my emotions may have been running a bit high at the time. I would agree that Masch is no angel either. And as much as it hurt at the time, the ref made the correct call on the penalty. I love Carra, but he makes a couple dumb-ass mistakes like that every season.

N'Zonzi
Maybe he should’ve been sent off (which would’ve been hash for that occasion and for Reina, although Robben deserves to be forcefully flung every time), but wouldn’t you agree that was a soft yellow and not “dirty”? It just bugs me to have to defend a team with a few players a step too slow for the competition and one blatant idiot from the masses who scream that we’re out to break legs and laugh about it in the pub afterwards.
Yeah even the Pro-Liverpoo announcer was agreeing that was a penalty. Probably hurt him as much as you to admit it, though. ;)
I will give Reina credit for that 92nd minute save. I thought that was a goal for sure.
What's the rumpus?
That 92nd minute Reina save ...
Between that and Landon Donovan missing an absolute freakin’ gimme sitter – I felt like City saw 2 big rivals luck into 4 points.
Man U might be sold to a group called the "Red knights"
Awesome.
