Wednesday a.m. Rangers stuff
Continuing the creep towards pitchers and catchers reporting...
Richard Durrett writes about the Rangers' outfield depth today, that depth primarily being David Murphy, who Durrett looks at in depth.
Anthony Andro has a spring training preview up that looks at where things are around the league.

Murphy was a good pickup
I’m glad he’s on the team, he’s a good 4th OFer on a playoff caliber team. I still have some small hope for Beltre, but Murphy makes the Gagne trade a win all by himself.

I always maintain that signing Gagne to an $ 8 million contract and expecting him to help that team improve
was a very foolish expenditure if the goal was to make the 2007 team better but JD made a nice save by trading for Murphy at the perfect time.

Disagree
Gagne was 2-0 with 16 saves and a 2.16 ERA. I think Daniels did a great job signing him for the production he gave and trading him at the right time. Double win for Daniels. Gagne was not the problem in 2007.

+1
Gagne was only a problem when he went up the BOS, and oh how I loved seeing the Red Sox got fleeced. I mean, it looked like a good deal for them initially, as Murph wasn’t going to get much PT there anyway, but man did Gagne melt down when he went up there. And we got The Chin. Score one for the home team.

It happened July 31, so that's about 100 of the 162
We likely paid him about 5 of the 8 million (or 62% of his contract)

that is what i was thinking as well
So basically we “bought” Murphy, Beltre and Gabbard for 5 mil. Im perfectly fine with that.

Plus we included some cash
according to Baseball Reference, so let’s say 6 million. We got 4 months of a pretty good reliever and then flipped him for a very usable part, a lefty who showed some flashes, and a toolsy OF wildcard who might or might not make it. Not bad.

I would take Mark DeRosa right now for 6 million.
I soloed in the Mile High Club!
Would Derosa play CF everyday?
Thats the part people aren’t factoring in. We had just let GMJ walk and had no one to play out there. Laynce Nix was probably the next choice. We signed Marlon Byrd and had we known how he would do we probably wouldn’t have signed Lofton but nobody on earth could look back and at that moment say Byrd would end up doing what he did. hell he didn’t even make the team out of spring training, not that he shouldn’t have though.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I wouldn't have signed Kenny Lofton either
because spending $ 6 million on any 40 year old CF was not going to improve the 2007 Rangers.
I would have spent $ 11 million on Ted Lilly and given him a 4 year deal.
That way I could have been more patient with John Danks and not felt pressured to trade him for somebody (McCarthy) I thought was more ready to pitch in The Show.
I would have had $ 3 million left to spend on something else plus I would have had two LH starting pitchers in my rotation and ready to roll in The Show by 2008.

The Rangers didn't sign Lilly
because the stupid sonofabitch GM didn’t make a run at him.
The stupid sonofabitch, flush off signing Frankie Cat (3 years/$ 13 million) & VPadilla (3 years /$ 34 million) to big deals thought it was a better idea to make a run at Zito and when that failed he traded Danks for McCarthy.

McCarthy trade
was after Lilly signed. Again, no evidence to prove the Rangers didn’t make a run at him.
2006:
January: Signs one-year, $4MM deal.
March: Makes change in follow-through. Later in month, experiences minor right shoulder injury.
April: Makes first start despite back/shoulder issues.
June: Leaves start with shoulder tightness.
August: Misses start with stiff neck. Later in month, has heated argument with manager John Gibbons after being pulled from awful start. Gibbons gets bloody nose.
October: Lilly files for free agency.
Well, that injury history definitely rules out Baltimore. Whoever signs Lilly is really going to have to take a long look at that left shoulder; he’s yet to throw 200 innings in the Majors.
It appears as if Lilly had some of the same issues that have caused you to slam the Harden signing.
Again, STFU

Before hitting free agency
Lilly had pitched 178+ innings three times in his career.
Since 2007, Lilly is 44-26 with an ERA under 4 as a Cub and has made 95 starts in three years.
Imagine if This Thing was rolling both Lilly & Danks in the 2010 starting rotation.

I don't think so.
JD made a terrible trade with the White Sox in part because he spent money on Gagne & Lofton instead of on Lilly. Those consequences are still felt today.
I worried about the JD hire when it was made but decided to give him a year honeymoon before rendering judgment.
That (after 2006 / before 2007) was the off-season I left Little Boy Donuts Reservation.
I came unhinged with This Thing because what JD had done (this was a year after the failed AG/Soriano trades) and was doing coupled with more Tom Hicks shenanigans. What was happening here drove me back to the sheer hopelessness of ’82 & ’85.
And then there was daylight once again and hope restored when Nolan was hired on that glorious day in February 2008.

You're still not getting it
The fact that all of this happened after the Lilly signing, instead of before, means you have no idea whether JD went all in to try to get Lilly and then settled for the other options or not. If I was Lilly, I would have chosen CHC over Texas unless the pay difference was substantial. Stop the playing the “Be a GM” option on Video Games. It really clouds your perception of reality

I thought we had a good team regardless of the Gagne/ Lofton signings
I thought those were good moves at the time given our situation. Looking back maybe the reason we didn’t go after Lilly was we couldn’t commit that kind of money that far down the road to a guy like him. You know the financial mess we were in last year would only have been magnified had we had another 13 mil player on the books.
Im not gonna argue with you that the last couple years may have been a little better had things gone differently. But the present and future may also not be as bright as it is right now. Its not like the last couple years we have been the worst team in the league. We actually managed to completely rebuild our entire organization while keeping a payroll under 75 million and yet didn’t have a top 10 draft pick in that time. Thats hard for a team to do especially in such a short amount of time.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
The clarity is that it was a foolish signing
if the goal was to make the team better ($ 8 million for a closer) but JD played a bad hand about as well has he could have.
For the record, I believe the optimism fans have towards the 2010 team is far more realistic than the optimism we saw in here before the 2007 season.

No I don't think so
I think it was a low risk/high reward type signing. I don’t believe all 8 mil was guaranteed from the get go but I may be wrong on that point.
Idea was we didn’t have a closer going into 2007 and Gagne was only a couple seasons removed from being the dominant closer in the sport. If he bounced back toward his old self we would have a shut down back of the pen which is what every team strives for.
he held up his end while here but the team didn’t do as well as the FO hoped so given his contract status he was a prime trade candidate and we flipped him at the right time obviously.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
That is my point Josey
Since he made the trade with Atlanta, JD has been real fucking good. This is 3 years of good drafts, smart trades and dare I say, GRITTY GM’ing of the highest magnitude. made before the 2007 season dealt this organization severe consequences.
Those are the kind of decisions that cause you begin a season 23-42, give up 967 runs and kill attendance.

Buck
Way too caught up in the whole “Good Face” thing.
And as much as people bitch about Washington, let’s remember that Buck not only had a hand in the departure of Doug Davis, but thought it was a good idea that same year (2003) to give over 500 at-bats to the three-headed offensive juggernaut of Shane Spencer, Ryan Christenson, and Donnie Sadler.

That ’04 team was the start of something special and he had a big role in that.
When Hicks sat on his wallet that off-season (Hidalgo, Astacio, really?), the rest of team rebelled against all forms of management and I think Buck got caught up in that.

Having players like you is not necessarily a prerequisite to success, I agree
But along the lines of what ASL says, it’s a fine line between being not liked, but respected, and just flat out despised. Bill Parcells was not particularly liked, but commanded respect amongst most players. My little sister is quitting high school basketball after this season because she’s tired of dealing for a coach who just yells and yells but commands exactly zero respect and is not a particularly good coach either.

Showalter
Pretty much every depiction of him in the baseball media I’ve ever read had three things in common:
1. He’s great at building a team
2. He has no sense of humor
3. He’s an overbearing horse’s ass
There’s a whole chapter on the Buck era in Buster Olney’s book on the Yankees, and it wasn’t a very flattering portrayal. I have several friends who are Yankee fans, and none of them have much good to say about the man either.

Joe Torre
won a lot of championships with the foundation laid down by Buck and so did Brenley in Az.
Buck should have been a horse’s ass when he came to Texas because This Thing was a mess.
I give him a pass on what happened after 2004 (although I can’t disagree with him being let go) because the players were rebellious of the owner and it filtered down to all forms of management.

So there's a baseball message board I post on.
It has a lot of smart people and a lot of Mariners fans. Unfortunately for this group, the smart and the Mariners are not the same too often.
Anyway, today someone posted the CHONE projections on this group (something I’ve long since learned not to do unless the Angels and Mariners are going to be awesome). Most people are treating them the way they should with stuff that amounts to “that’s interesting” and “we’ll see.”
But oh no. The Mariners fans are freaking out on the horrible predictions. Despite CHONE’s excellent track record that puts them to shame, it’s embarassing itself this year with how much it hates the Mariners. Sean Smith is clearly biased.
And it got me thinking, “I’ve seen this before. . .” I remembered back to 2008. The Mariners had, just like 2007, put together a winning record thanks to destroying their pythagorean expectations. Someone posted various projections saying the Mariners would be sucky and the Mariners fans freaked out. “WE ADDED ERIK BEDARD!”
Short memories I guess. This feels a lot like then, except they don’t look quite as bad in the projections and they actually have a future. But the Ms fans are still dumbasses.
