i didn't know Hurley was left-handed

Not sure if you're being sarcastic, but
Hurley is the one in the background. Not sure who the lefty is in the foreground.

yeah, it was sarcasm

Serious question/point.
Are most big league managers hitting High A players fungo on 2/18? If for nothing else, you gotta love Wash for his passion of the game and willingness to teach anyone anything.
I know that doesn’t translate into success, but things could be worse.

Well, Wash does like to go out there and throw BP a lot.
I certainly see him going out there the first day of ST and even shagging balls as long as he’s with the players. Just seems to be his thing.

Well since position players aren't required to be there right now what else is he supposed to do
he loves the fungo and infield and defense are his areas of expertise.

I don't know, I just don't envision LaRussa or Torre hitting fungos to some kid in High A before anyone is required to be there...
maybe they do, maybe they don’t.

I don't think those guys have the background Wash does
He was a infielder in his playing days and that was his area as a coach in Oakland. He probably feels comfortable doing that. Sure he could be over there watching pitchers and catchers but thats Maddux’s area of expertise

I was applauding Wash for hitting fungo, not questioning why he was doing it.

What am I missing here? I don’t see that at all. I think he’s just giving LSBers easy access to some ST videos, which I for one appreciate. We know he didn’t do the video himself and I don’t really think he’s implying that either.

Q:Conditioning was a key element entering last season. Did that have to be harped on again, or is it understood now by the pitchers? This winter, guys came into the ballpark and were working all winter. You look at these guys now, they all look great. They know what’s in front of them. They also know your career is a freakin’ blip. There’s no reason to go through this out of shape. Give yourself an opportunity. If you have a problem with it, go upstairs and talk to the man about it.
Q:And he’ll find you another team? Yeah. Plain and simple.

Watching the Omar/Alexi catch video,
you have Beltre throwing flat footed and Ogando damn near crow hopping from 70 feet. Seems weird.

Beltre's shoulder is being monitored, he was shut down in winter ball.

Looks like less of a leg bend with his back leg at the beginning, but maybe that's because it isn't a max effort leg drive.
Seems like he brings his arm straight back alot more than even after he first implemented some changes last year.
Pro baseball has always been a dream, so this is pretty freakin’ cool out here. -- Tim Steggall, undrafted Rangers minor leaguer.
Looks like it.
His elbow doesn’t get as high as before, either. It still comes way behind his shoulders, though.
His finish and follow-through look a little cleaner, but it’s hard to tell from that camera angle and frame rate.

Delivery looks more compact,
less flailing components, stronger base and more torque from lower half, less top down but still on top of the ball, landing neatly -toe forward on ball of his foot. I like it, but I’m interested in your take, analytically.
A Stephens
by poster formerly known as ncrangerman on Feb 24, 2010 9:26 AM CST up reply actions
After looking at the DMN video from Evan...
I really don’t think his lower half has changed since last season. He might have a little more drop before his drive, but he still floats his front foot instead of really stepping into his stride. I’m not a huge fan of how he balances himself (glove arm and front leg starting out toward 3B), but this probably doesn’t have much of a performance effect aside from the theoretical potential for quicker fatigue.
He lands a little toward 3B as a result, but in the video, he’s getting his front shoulder all the way through.
Anyway, he’s not quite streamlined, but his arm action is much improved.
by NoNameOnCard on Feb 24, 2010 9:34 PM CST up reply actions
The look of his delivery is very similar (to me) to when he returned with the new mechanics last year, except
a little smoother. It might just be better coordination as he’s gotten used to the new mechanics.
His follow through is like the opposite of recoil. He almost could stick his hand in a hip pocket, if he had one.
Maybe his biggest change at this point is adding the cutter?
Pro baseball has always been a dream, so this is pretty freakin’ cool out here. -- Tim Steggall, undrafted Rangers minor leaguer.
The mechanics are definitely different.
His arm action is considerably different. His follow-through late last season was still the same as it was during spring training. What he’s doing now is quite remarkable by comparison.
I might get some new high-speed footage this spring. If so, I plan to break down the differences, but I’m not sure if I can publish the video (or stills from it) that I have from last July/August, though, since it came from the Rangers.

who is the lefty sidearm pitcher in the background?
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
I'm guessing Clay Rapada
Rapada handcuffed lefthanded batters in the International League both last season (.210/.279/.274) and also in 2008 (.207/.304/.379), but his low, side-arm slot makes him extremely vulnerable to righties.
Dunno if
Someone has pointed it out yet but Davis and Hambone look extremely similar…even the mannerisms after the pitch…

His stride
is huge, from what little I know I don’t see how he’s not putting excess stress on his shoulder by having to fire forward from so far back and with such an exaggerated landing. What say NNOC?

Shoulder stress is caused by the path the elbow takes.
A stride will only affect your shoulder if it hinders or helps rotation of the torso.
