Tuesday a.m. Rangers things

The big meeting between the team and Hicks Sports Group lenders takes place today, and Jeff Wilson writes that some lenders are expected to object to the terms of the sale agreement.  However, Wilson also notes that Chuck Greenberg won't be at the meeting, which would seem to be an indication that Greenberg doesn't expect there to be any major problems with today's meeting.

Meanwhile, Tom Hicks has been sued by a firm for $6.9 million, supposedly for work done on the real estate adjacent to TBIA.

And Richard Durrett has a Q&A with Scott Feldman up.

They do and they dont

This happens all the time in deals secondary market transactions that happen where i work. I mean sometimes deals that only contain 20 pieces so to speak take months. This is way more complex with a lot more moving parts. They are simply making a fuss so they can get more money while another creditor gets less. Basically, they realize there is X amt of money in the pot. They want the most of X and dont give a shit who else it hurts. They are trying to use their high leverage position to scare up some more money and/or other considerations. I guarantee you that internally they have written this debt down well below what they will eventually get for it.

Exactly

They’ll get their money with interest. If they wanted their money now instead of later, they shouldn’t have bought Hick’s debt.

I didn't know what a mancrush was. Derek Holland showed me.

by DerekSTheRed on Feb 2, 2010 9:30 AM CST up reply actions

Well

If their position is that the assets could be sold for more money, or with more cash being available to the lenders, then they aren’t being unreasonable by objecting.

If you own secured debt, and the underlying asset is being sold for less than market value, and the owner is getting cash and retaining an interest in the asset, and you as a secured creditor aren’t being paid in full, then it isn’t unreasonable to say no, you are going to block the deal.

by Adam J. Morris on Feb 2, 2010 9:42 AM CST up reply actions

Right

I’m sure they bought the debt at a discount, but that doesn’t impact their right to collect everything they are owed, or, if not, foreclose on the collateral.

by Darrell McKown on Feb 2, 2010 9:50 AM CST up reply actions

Do we know if the debt is secured?

I presume it is but that’s not guaranteed.

Debt

I think the safest assumption in this whole mess is that the debt is secured.

The lenders have other remedies if it isn’t, which are also not good for the club.

by Darrell McKown on Feb 2, 2010 10:15 AM CST up reply actions

That would be easy enough for a reporter to figure out

See if there is some blanket security agreement that’s been filed or a mortgage. If it’s secured what is securing it? Also, if some debt is secured and other is not then the secured creditors wouldn’t mind bankruptcy as they would have priority.

by WyoRanger on Feb 2, 2010 10:19 AM CST up reply actions

Not exactly

If the debt is in default (which has been reportedly the case for months), then the lenders almost certainly have the right to accelerate the debt, and, if not paid in full, foreclose on the collateral.

by Darrell McKown on Feb 2, 2010 9:52 AM CST up reply actions

HSG owns the Stars also.

If lenders accept this deal they will still be owed money. Can they not force Hiscks to sell the Stars?

It probably depends

On what the collateral securing the debt in default is.

by Darrell McKown on Feb 2, 2010 10:13 AM CST up reply actions

If HSG actually defaulted on the debt

then the creditors would have an equity position or at least, they would be one of the first to be paid. Other than that, I cannot see how the creditors would have any say on the disposition of the Rangers. As long as those payments are made, they can only twiddle their thumbs.

Actually, a mechanic's lien wouldn't work because it's been > 4 mos. since the services and goods were provided

Plus, a mech. lien isn’t a suit, it’s a simple filing with the county clerk.

This is likely a suit for breach of contract, sworn account, or quantum meruit.

Speaking of the FWST

there is a nice column from Randy Galloway up today talking about the Rangers. Apparently he spoke to somebody connected to the AL (scout, front office type?) that he called a “baseball voice” from outside the division but connected to the league. There are some nice quotes about Millwood, Harden, Vlad and Cobra Lewis.

About Vlad -

""I questioned that move from the start. Vlad was an institution in Anaheim, a good guy who was beloved by everyone with the Angels. Why would they allow him to walk? What [the Angels’] people tell me is there is no way he is healthy.

“This will be fun to watch. If Vlad stays healthy, the Rangers nailed one here. If not, the lineup, of course, is a heck of a lot easier to pitch to, kinda like last year.”

About Cobra Lewis…

“I read somewhere that the Rangers were penciling in Colby Lewis [after two years in Japan] as the No. 3 starter. Don’t know if that’s true or not, but it’s kinda strange.

“In Japan, he threw strikes over there and got people out. But our reports on him when he pitched here [Lewis was a former Rangers’ top prospect] were that he could throw strikes. The problem was that those strikes were hit hard, even when he had command. Then he shied away from the strike zone.

“I respect the Japanese league, but it doesn’t have our kind of hitters. To me, the Rangers have a lot better candidates for the rotation than Lewis, but I don’t know, maybe Japan helped him improve greatly.”

Hicks' finances & Liverpool

Some very, very interesting comments regarding Hicks’ financial situation today via the minutes of a recent meeting between Liverpool supporters’ union Spirit of Shankly and the club’s managing director, Christian Purslow:

http://www.spiritofshankly.com/news/Minutes-from-Christian-Purslow-and-SOS-Meeting.html

I’ll summarize for the non-soccer fans here:

- Hicks (and his partner, George Gillett) currently have £237 million in debt as relates to Liverpool.

- Their main creditor, the Royal Bank of Scotland, has made it clear that there will be no refinancing of any loans until £100 million of the debt has been cleared.

- That £100 million will most likely come in the form of new investors in the club, but apparently Hicks & Gillett have overvalued the purchase price for the team (sound familiar?)

- The pair have invested £130 million of their own money into the club, and have no further money to invest barring new financing. So any future player purchases will have to come from player sales and/or club profits.

- Purslow also stated that “LFC is for sale. It will be sold. The owners have to sell, they are out of money. The bank want it sold, the fans want it sold and people want to buy it.”

No mention of the Rangers’ impending sale, but I have to think the Royal Bank of Scotland breathing down his neck might have given him a little extra incentive to get the deal done with Greenberg & company.

"To have the judgment and wisdom and personal touch of Nolan Ryan, and the tremendous group that JD has assembled, I think the Rangers on the baseball side are the envy of every franchise in baseball in terms of talent."

OT: How much $$ is Mauer going to get?

7/$140M – 10/$200M?

While he deserves $20M per year no problem for the next couple, will that salary be worth it when he inevitably is converted to a 1b or DH in a few years?

by BuckyB on Feb 2, 2010 9:55 AM CST reply actions

7/140 seems reasonable

I’d worry about a 10 year deal with a catcher. But Mauer is one of the top few players in the league and vital to that franchise. I can understand the Twins doing that.

by t ball on Feb 2, 2010 10:12 AM CST up reply actions

I agree

The whole 10 years thing may be a bit long. Itll be interesting to see what Joe Mauer’s camp is thinking in terms of years. On one hand they can try to get two big contracts out of him (7 yrs will take him to 33 then maybe another 5-7 yrs as a DH with another large contract).

This is the biggest signing in club history for them. You dont let a guy like Mauer walk. He is the perfect player. He is a local boy, leader, all-around good guy, totally beloved and not to mention one of the best hitters ever from the catcher position already. IMO, he is the only guy going right now that has a chance to even challenge Pujols as the best hitter in the majors. Id love to see him in his hitting prime (i guess 27-30?) not having to catch.

Not sure if this has been discussed anywhere here, but Joey over at BBTIA has a good article up this morning...

discussing Beltre and Ogando , where they might rank in our system, and possible 40 man implications…

As far as the renewed 40-man roster crunch is concerned, I’m not entirely convinced that Joaquin Arias and Luis Mendoza are the default candidates for disposal; the former has managed to evade management’s roster-pruning shears for what seems like years now, while the latter persists in teasing us with his nasty low-to-mid-90s sinker and monster grounder-inducing tendencies, and one doesn’t require a terribly vivid imagination to envision one or the other managing to hang around in spite of their respective lack of minor league options.

[Off-the-top-of-the-head roster-trimming alternatives could include the return of Rule 5 draftee Ben Snyder to the Giants, the outrighting of Eric Hurley — who, despite hopeful thoughts to the contrary, probably isn’t a very good bet to meaningfully contribute to the major league product this year — to the minors, or a trade of somebody in the vein of Guillermo Moscoso, Doug Mathis and/or Warner Madrigal for a prospect not requiring 40-man roster placement. Not one of those possibilities would surprise me if it did, in fact, come to fruition.]

by octoberty on Feb 2, 2010 10:32 AM CST reply actions

Couldn't Hurley be put on the 60 man DL?

If he isn’t ready to go at the beginning of the seaosn, that would clear up a spot.

If the Rangers don't plan on him being ready before mid-May I think this is what they will do

Although he does earn service time while on the 60 day DL.

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

I think if hes on track to be sent to Frisco or OKC around the 1st of May they won't 60 him

Unless we absolutely need the roster spot. because then in 60 days you have to release someone to make room for Hurley all the while he acrues service time.

One of my best buddies emails me this morning to tell me this

He’s about to leave for work and his phone buzzes. His wife asks if it’s a text from me (assuming I’m texting him about some sort of Rangers or Aggie recruiting news). He tells her no, it’s an email in his work account instead.

She rolls her eyes and says “oh, it’s an e-mail from The Newberg. Wait, did I just call him ‘The Newberg’?”

Two years ago this girl knew no more about the Texas Rangers than that they were a law enforcement agency. And now, she’s calling him “The Newberg.”

Greatness.

I didn't want to do a fanpost or fanshot about this, but I would like the LSB to comment on this as I have concerns

The Angels Angels of angleland have 5 picks in the top 39 this year 18th, 29th, 30th, 37th and 39th. I imagine this is one reason money may be a little tight(not that much, but just another straw on their back). Is this a good draft class? If they wind up sucking as bad as I hope, I could see a them selling a piece or two in July for prospects. Should I be worried they might pull a Rangers and flipped the farm from bad to good in one year.

they had 4 or 5 picks last year as well

we have 4 picks this year between the 1st and Supplemental 1st.

The Angels have a good GM but they aren’t going to trade away their talent, especially since they had 4 or 5 guys they could have traded last year. The Angels are still in it to win the division.

Just curious

What indications have you seen that Reagins is a good GM? I was pondering the question myself the other day.

Getting Tex was a nice move

that’s about it

I guess Torii Hunter wasn’t a bad signing

by BuckyB on Feb 2, 2010 11:48 AM CST up reply actions

I thought the Abreu signing

was the move that gave the Angels the AL West last year and getting Kazmir (when he knew was gonna lose Lackey) fairly cheap speaks well of him as well.

It's not like he replaced an ace with an ace, though, on Kazmir/Lackey

I don’t think Reagins is a bad GM, but I don’t know that he’s necessarily proven much either. He took over a well-built, well-run organization with a little money to spend and made some solid moves.

Other than that, the jury is still out. It’s hard to get a read on a GM’s true abilities until he has to rebuild/reload or he has to work within the confines of a very limited budget.

I've never heard anyone about Reagins' drafting ability

They squatted on their supposed “super class” of prospects recently, most of whom flamed out.

Do you have any data either way on Reagins?

It’s so early to evaluate last year’s crop, when they had a lot of high picks, but they appear to have done fairly well. We’ll know a lot more by this summer. Like everything else, it seems like it’s TBD.

I agree on the Abreu signing

Might want to hold off on praising the Kazmir deal, though, until we see it play out. Keith Law ranked Sweeney in the 60s in his top 100 and Rodriguez could still be something. For what was primarily a salary dump deal, they may wind up giving up more than they would have liked. Now, if Kazmir comes back and pitches like he did at the very end of the season for them, yeah, he’s probably worth the contract and the prospects.

by Brett Perryman on Feb 2, 2010 11:55 AM CST up reply actions

Agreed that Kazmir needs to play out but I think this was a good move.

This is a tricky time to be the Angels GM because they’re in transition. They just went thru a 6 year period of being very good when they needed to be great to win it all (plus they didn’t take advantage when windows of opportunity were open a little more in 2005, 2006, 2008).

There is still a nice infrastructure in place but they no longer have a line-up with an under 30 Figgins, Vlad in his prime, Tex and Hunter with K-Rod closing the game so I’m not going to be surprised if there is a hangover effect (clouding the franchise for not taking advantage of their greatness) or dip in performance in 2010.

I wouldn't be surprised by that either, and

I wouldn’t necessarily think that it would indicate poor performance by the GM, just like I don’t think that their excellent season this year is much of a positive indicator for him. I guess I just don’t think there’s a whole lot to judge him on yet, and I’m curious to see whether he’s really got the chops.

They have had a steady stream of home grown talent for a long time now

but still go out and sign free agents like Hunter and Abreu. I’d say that’s a well run organization. Yeah there are misses on signings like Matthews, but I’d say that he’s been a pretty good GM.

Most of what MikeEl mentioned is Stoneman’s work. Abreu was a nice signing, but you can hardly pin your entire resume on a nice one-year value signing. Folks around here certainly wouldn’t let Daniels do it for Milton Bradley.
