Dude, this is embarrassing. If we can compete with that payroll the entire front office deserves massive kudos.
I hope Tom Hicks gets Zeke-face.

How is that embarrassing?
To have the talent the Rangers have at such a low payroll cost is something to be proud of if you ask me. Royals and Pirates fans can bitch about this list, but Rangers fans should be smug as hell. It is simply awesome that the Rangers have the talent to win the division with a bottom-five payroll, and deserves all the more kudos.
Plus, think of the crazy amount of money the new ownership could invest in huge free agents in the future since the payroll is starting so low.
Ok, but let's not pretend
that it’s that low by design instead of necessity. A team on the cusp of playoff contention would have loved to have more financial flexibility to add the necessary pieces.

would you rather be us and have room to pick someone up later
or the Astros and have no shot in hell in the division and no future because their farm system is the equivalent of Atari 2600 in a PS3 era
Nobody is perfect, i am nobody, therefore, i am perfect
I don't understand your comment.
Of course I’d want room to pick someone up later. And we won’t until this sale is finalized. My issue was that we’re there and we didn’t have room to add anyone this year, or last year.

No idea...but the fact that we couldn't add anyone is what I'm bitching about.
I didn’t do any research on FA’s (OR trade targets) before making this complaint.
"Sometimes you just want to sit back and watch somebody throw 100." - Jeff Passan on Neftali Feliz
"Baseball's all that's real" - JB
The biggest complain I can make about that
is that we couldn’t sign Matt Purke. Sure, we could’ve used a good bat a trade deadline, but the Angels were on an unbelievable tear at that moment, it still would’ve been very close.
"Jurick Profar is tired of practice!! I wanna play I wanna play….waiting for march 12 to go to spring training! to kill some pichers:D:D I am Jurickson Profar son of judeska and chesmond.. And I was born ready! ready to play baseball!!" - Jurickson Profar
Yah, Purke's a big one.
There’s lots of stuff I’d’ve added if we had an owner willing to spend the last few years.
Porcello.
Drew Pomeranz, Anthony Renaudaoodo, Jack Armstrong, Kevin Keyes… all drafted by us, iirc, and none signed.
Adam Dunn was available at a pretty reasonable price last year and we didn’t have the cash to sign him… We make the playoffs with Dunn as our DH last year, don’t we?
I could go on and on…

Wow, I didn't realize that the Twins were closing on $100 million
Always thought of them as a low payroll type of team
They are spending
quite a bit on the likes of Pavano and Cuddyer and they gave extensions to guys like Nathan and all their young guys are arb-eligible. Once Mauer signs, they’ll be a 100+ million team.

Pirates
You know, it is not so bad to be a Pirates fan. Yes, they have been bad for a long time, and whomever was in charge never had a sound plan to make the team better. Huntington, however, knows what he is doing. From the USA Today:
During approximately the last two years… The Pirates have traded 16 players, eight of them potential free agents, and gotten 29 in return. Twenty-two of the Pirates’ 30 top prospects were not in the organization two years ago.
The Pirates also have added 25 scouts, tripled their budget to sign international players and doubled their budget to sign draft picks. They’ve invested in an academy in the Dominican Republic.
They may not be spending money on the major league team, but they are spending money. Moreover, the Pirates are spending money in the right places.

Payroll
Given where this team is on the development cycle, I’m not that bothered by the current payroll level. We will need to add a significant amount of payroll over the next few years to keep this team together, assuming the young players continue to develop as we expect.
Taking the payroll down and rebuilding the team was definitely the right move to make, rather than trying to spend our way back. Whether that was a good decision, or one made out of financial necessity, is debatable, but I’m happy with where we are right now.
They could have spent more this offseason, but I’m not sure what I would have wanted them to do. I don’t think outspending the Cards or Mets for Holliday or Bay would have been a good strategy, or going 5 years for John Lackey. There may have been a couple guys that would have been nice on one- or two-year deals (maybe Ben Sheets, Mike Cameron), but all-in-all I would rather have a situation where the front office and new ownership isn’t bogged down with long-term deals and has significant flexibility as we head into 2010-2012.
Absolutely
Still it’s a little embarrassing that a team in the DFW metromess is spending the same as the effing Marlins who struggle to get 5,000 fans in their seats a game.

I’m happy seeing a low payroll this year, because it, and the few long term commitments, gives the Rangers a) lots of room to sign guys next offseason, when the crop is much better and b) lots of ability to sign some of these kids long term.

Next years FA class
I don’t really see that many great names. Looking at our current roater we should be set at all IF and OF spots. Assuming Smoak is ready by next Opening Day theres your DH (if both he and Davis are on the roster one will be DH and the other at 1B).
Catcher is really the only positional spot we could be in need of if Salty and Teagarden don’t progress this year but assming Mauer stays in Minnesota theres really only Victor Martinez that is intriguing at that position.
Pitching wise I don’t see us in the market if we decide to resign Harden and if we don’t then its either Beckett or Lee thats out there.
The point is mainly even if we go out in FA its gonna be salary increases due to service time and arbitration that causes our payroll to go up. I wouldn’t be suprised to see a payroll still south of 75 million next year yet our team be considerably better

Just looking at Cots and our current roster
Besides backup spots (UT IF, and 25th man) we shouldn’t need any starters offensively next year besides possibly catcher. Lets say we sign VMart. How much more than Vlads 6.5 mil will he make? 3-5 mil?
Pitching wise say we give Cliff Lee a deal worth 15 mil per year. Thats 7.5 mil more than Harden is making this year. Those would be the two big money FA pickups we could make and its only adding 10-12 mil. Its gonna be the arbitration raises that really increase our payroll. If we make both those acquisitions we will be over 75 mil but if we don’t go after a catcher I could see us being between 72 and 75 million next year
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
My point was:
There’s a lot of good names out there…at a lot of postions. There’s enough that there’s no way they all get extended before FA 2011 starts.
Now, if your point is that we don’t need to sign someone at 5 different positions, then, um…well, yeah, but I don’t know anyone who thinks this team needs to add $100 million in payroll next offseason.*

Strictly looking at the FA class in general yeah its a nice class
But it doesn’t really matter how good it is if we don’t have openings at those positions which was my point originally. Catcher and starting pitcher are the only positions I see us spending considerable money on in FA and those positions lack a ton of big names.

OK
I don’t count Mauer since he aint leaving Minn. I am not particularly interested in AJ especially given his age and mediocre performance. VMart interests me like I said above. But considering Smoak probably replaces Vlad at DH Vlads salary will go a long way to signing VMart so the increase isn’t much.
And Beckett, Lee and possibly Hudson are the only pitchers I would want to sign. The others don’t interest me. So if we let Harden walk his salary will go a decent way toward signing one of those guys meaning the increase isn’t that much which was my whole point originally.

Meh...
..makes the point. It’s not that I want the Rangers to sign any or all of them, just that there’s a lot more talent out there next year than in most year’s. bigsteve and others have talked about how next year’s FA class isn’t that great…but it really is pretty good. Even if a lot of the players aren’t at (projected) need positions for the Rangers, it still matters. There are still only so many dollars to go around, and the more talented guys out there, the better the situation for the Rangers.

The catchers
Martinez turns 32 in December, and is at a point where he’s probably not a long term answer behind the plate, given his age and defensive issues.
Mauer isn’t likely to hit the market.
That leaves you with Pierzynski and Laird as the top f.a. catchers after next season.

A guy like Grady Sizemore could be available and someone we might go after.
Or, if we want to dream, Zack Greinke, who salary goes from $7 million in 2010 to a total of $27 million in 2011 and 2012.

There are maybe 10 players in baseball that with certainly would not be traded.

Why would they trade him
The Royals farm system is not bare. Its not as full as ours but its not bare.
Hes not at an age where he won’t be good by the time those young guys are ML ready.
While his contract does balloon they lose some pretty significant salary next winter which should offset that ballooning. Guillens 12 mil comes off next winter, Meches 12 mil comes off after 2011, DeJesus’s 4.7 mil comes off next winter, Farnsworths 4.5 mil comes of next winter, Cruz’s 3.25 mil comes off next winter possibly.

I wonder if...
the money the league is going to send our way for being near the bottom in payroll is going to make up for the loans we took out from last year. The league is going to send some of that sweet sweet luxury tax money the Rangers way, right?

Cryptonomicon is my go-to recommendation. 1100 pages dealing with history, wwii, monetary theory, and tech nerdiness.
The baroque trilogy, also be stephenson, is very good.
I really liked tony judts history of postwar europe, and can recommend that
On scifi, anything by alastair reynolds or greg egan is good. Charles stross is hit or miss, but his eschaton series is terrific.
If space opera is your thing, check out peter hamilton. Super cheesy, but engrossing.
John scalzi is good heinleinesque scifi.
Chernows biographies of rockefeller and hamilton are great.
“Nixon and Kissinger” came out recently, and I really enjoyed that.
There’s also a book called “three who made a revolution” that traces stalin, lenin and trotskys lives up to the time of the revoltion.
Pynchons “against the day” is really good…it is speculative sci fi taking place 100 years ago as it would have been written in 1900

Guns, Germs and Steel is 10+ years old, but still a great read.
It’s basically an analysis of why different civilizations in different parts of the world advanced (or didn’t) the way they did. Very well-written, entertaining read by Jared Diamond. Some content specific to your destination is in there. You can impress or offend your hosts with your knowledge of why they are the way they are.
His follow-up book, I think called Collapse, evaluated why certain civilizations cratered. A comparison of the relative success of the Dominican Republic vs. Haiti is interesting, given recent events. And no, the success of the DR is not measured by the number of rangy middle infield prospects produced.
I never finished Guns, Germs and Steel.
It was odd, at first I loved it, but I just got bogged down and never picked it up again. I probably should finish it at some point.

In the interest of quicker games Ron should just tell the ump he's pulling the Feliz card and the ump should rule the inning over.--Sherman McCoy on Sept. 4, 2009
It seemed liked...
..as the game went on, Canada was getting more freedom in front of the net. Sheesh..

That final goal...
by Ryan Kesler was just so gritty. I’m going to start having to call that guy Ryan “Eckstein” Kesler.

Heh Ryan Miller is #1 trending topic on Twitter.
NBC is 4th, why? Because people are pissed and are wishing death in a fire for NBC for not showing the fucking game on N fucking BC. Lol
by TooLegitToQuit on Feb 21, 2010 9:21 PM CST via mobile reply actions
Yes, people are so pissed at NBC that they'll...continue watching the Olympics on NBC.
People are "pissed’ at NBC and Leno too but Leno’s ratings will probably start beating Letterman’s about a fortnight after he returns.
That's not going to happen...
But you’re right. It’s foolish to voice an opinion. Accepting lowest common denominator programming is the new “pissed.”

THAT was a great bleeping hockey game.
One of the few things I’ve tuned into per the Olympics.

I decided to give it a chance last night...
…popped some popcorn, sat down with the Mrs…put it on Ch 5 and effn ICE DANCING was on….
It’s like figure skating but they don’t do any jumps.
Probably the worst imaginable thing possible.

I find the tv coverage
kind of annoying for the most part. There are approximately 57 minutes of commercials every hour, 2 minutes of talking and 1 minute of sport.
Freude, schoener Goetterfunken,
Tochter aus Elysium,
Wir betreten feuertrunken,
Himmlische dein Heiligtum.
Yeah...
that’s my problem with it too. In 4 hours of coverage you have 2 1/2 hours of commercials and BSing form Costas and Collinsworth.
I actually just DVR’d the damn thing last night because I wanted to see what the cross-ski was like. Ended up watching a few other events like the bobsledding too. It worked out much better that way.

The rarity of being an American underdog
makes it even more fun. I can’t hardly stand to watch b-ball dream teams after the first one.
It’s too bad Mikey Mo can’t be a part of it, but yeah, fantastic game.

I wish Mo, Hull, Guerin could still get it up
but the torch has been passed.
Canada has staggered thru this entire Olympic Thing but if they gack in hockey when the games are at their place…oh my.

It's like Team Japan coming into the US and beating the 2001 Miami Hurricanes in Football.
Losing at your own goddamn sport is all kinds of embarrassing, especially in Canada (barf) where Hockey is like sex to those people.

'but the torch has been passed'
True. Aging sucks. I love Hully, but I considered it kinda mercenary(like Olujawon in basketball).
'Waiting for a girl and she gets me into fights

AMAZING hockey draw now
US gets the top seed and only has to beat Schweiz/Belarus and Ceska/Suomi to go to the gold medal game.
Canada has to beat Germany, Russia and most likely Sweden to get there.
We’re probably realistically underdogs against either Czech or Finland, but to only have to play one of those big three to win a gold medal is amazing.
I tried finding a link that had the draw spelled out and all that
couldn’t find anything — you have a link?
