He's done for the year, and probably 2010-11, as well.

yikes!
He’s a FA after the season, so this was poor timing…
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
Jeez.
Career over. And before anyone says why?
a-He’s made his coin,
b-this is his excuse to burn mad bowls 24/7,
c-He will never rehab this injury.

Damn shame.

certainly there were other factors leading up to the trade
but a really good trade for the Mavericks just got to looking even better.

the way he tore it, being run into by an opposing player on the Bulls, makes it even less likely that the injury would have definitely occurred if he stayed…

I believe the point was that it doesn't prove anything about the greatness of Donnie or Mark
because it doesn’t make the Mavs title contenders, only second rounders. As such, the trade is pretty meh.
I don't understand this logic
what if Kobe’s injury is more severe than we thought? There are hundreds of what ifs out there. I don’t buy the whole does it make us equal to the Lakers bit. Their job is to make the Mavs the best team possible. It’s not like we gave up a ton to get those 3 guys. They traded a guy who was done here for 2 better players. If you lose in the 2nd round, that doesn’t mean the trade wasn’t the right thing to do.
"calmer than you are dude" Walter (Big Lebowski)
by Arlington Stadium Legend on Feb 23, 2010 1:59 PM CST up reply actions
agreed......
This trade sets up 2 things:
- It should gain them a top 3 seed in the West at the least. This sets up a 2nd round re-match with the nuggets…and they matchup better with the Nuggets now than before that trade.
- It sets the Mavs up to make a splash in FA next year by trading Damp. The deal gives us our replacement at center in Haywood (and a much better one at that)…The Mavs can dangle a Damp, Beabois, 1st round pick deal to someone that is about to lose a free agent (Joe Johnson)….and not worry about the huge hole left at center.

Adam is right about Jerry
I can’t remember what he said about TO and Wade though.
by LoneStarBallUser on Feb 23, 2010 10:59 PM CST up reply actions
He thought TO was a cancer and not good for the team
(which I think is the most defensible position he had)
And he thought the hiring of Wade Phillips was more about Jerry having control of the team than trying to pick the best coach that would allow the Cowboys to win.
How can you say that opinion is baseless? (the Jerry/Wade one)
It’s fair to disagree based on Wade’s coordinator prowess I suppose, but Jerry has hardly tried to hide the fact that not having full control of personnel makes him miserable, and that stance greatly limits the caliber of personnel and head coaching execs he can hire.
by Brett Perryman on Feb 24, 2010 1:59 AM CST up reply actions
I think the main reason he picked wade phillips is because wade phillips was the best coaching candidate out there
i think wade not craving power is ancillary, just like i think Jerry wanting power is ancillary to wanting to win.
And the line about full control – he’s the GM. If you’re insinuation is that Jerry won’t hire any coach who wants to be GM, then you’re right. But if you’re insinuation is that this greatly limits the field of coaches, you’re wrong. I’d go on to say that the better coaches out there actually don’t have that much control over personnel.
Well
The fact that he’s the g.m. is the biggest problem, really.

I’m new to the site, but I’ve noticed that Hicks sucks and so on because the Rangers payroll is only $60M or so. But we’re expecting that to be greatly increased by a new ownership group led by a guy who only has $3 million invested?

I've only seen that the sale was for around $525 million

From the Fort Worth Star Telegram:
Pittsburgh sports attorney Chuck Greenberg leads the investment group — Rangers Baseball Express — seeking to buy the club; team president Nolan Ryan will be a minority owner when the sale is finalized.

No. I don't think it's been publicly disclosed.
But the number is $3M.
Obviously Simpson is the money guy here. But it’s odd that he wouldn’t take the lead on the group. Doesn’t seem to suggest major payroll increases are coming. And that’s understandable, as the Rangers’ break-even in recent years has been around $60M.
Found the 5% reference
Ryan, who will hold up to five percent of the club once he is fully vested, said he does not see making any changes on the baseball operations department when – and if – his investment group is officially approved
http://rangersblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2010/01/nolan-ryan-acknowledges-major-league-bas.html
Here’s the quote about Ryan having the same amount as Greenberg:
Ryan said he has a minor stake in the club and put in the same amount of money as Chuck Greenberg. “We felt like we’d take the same position,” Ryan said. “Everybody needs some equity in there. With Chuck’s background and mine, I think the investors have developed a comfort level that their interests will be well represented.”
I really doubt he only invested $3M because that would mean the sales price of the team was $60M ($60M X 5% = $3M). Considering the sales price is north of $500M, his contribution is probably more around $25M ($500M X 5% = $25M)

Not sure how Grant got to that 5% number...
He doesn’t explain and the “once fully vested caveat” is interesting.
As of right now though, Greenberg is only putting in $3M.
Oh, and be careful with what you take for certain fact from Nolan Ryan. He has a lot of reason to lie about the Purke ordeal, given that he is the one that really drove the Rangers towards that kooky family.
Ok so who are you?
Why should I believe what you are saying over what has been reported in press?

Rangers100.
Who are you?
You don’t have to believe me. But try being a little more critical with your reading of press reports.
I like Evan Grant. I’ve only spoken with him briefly on a few occasions over the years in the clubhouse after a couple road games and in Port Charlotte/Surprise, but my impression from those brief interactions is that he’s a good guy and professional about his job. Plus he has a somewhat cynical and dry wit which I like. I love that DMN has brought him back.
I’m sure he would be the first tell you that his wording or fact-checking of every single thing he puts in a blog entry isn’t perfect. And that’s no knock on him. That’s life and inevitable in journalism, especially in the age of blogging.
Has he seen the specific details of the Greenberg/Ryan offer? (If so, why hasn’t he published the specific ownership breakdown? Why do you think Greenberg himself hasn’t disclosed this?) Or did he just take Ryan’s word for it on the “5%” claim? Was that 5% of the total value or just owners’ equity invested? And what’s this “once fully vested” stuff?
I think Grant would tell you he just took Ryan’s comment at face value. It was a blog entry after all, and hey, he’s Nolan Ryan.
Sure thing, bud.

Since you have access to the clubhouse and what not
Why don’t you just ask Nolan/Greenberg yourself?

Ask them about what?
I already know the answers (generally speaking) to those questions. The point of them was to show you how there is a lot of room between what you concluded from Grant’s brief blog entry and the fact that Greenberg is only contributing $3M to the deal.
If you have a serious rebuttal to those points, feel free to give it. Otherwise, I’ll take your lack of one as a tacit admission of not having considered some things here.
I don't understand this at all.....
and it can’t be true.
Why would the MLB owners approve an ownership group that may be that weak?

I doubt its only 3 million
But Greenberg isn’t a huge money man. Hes the face of the ownership group. Hes the one who did all the leg work and got all these investors together and there will be a board of directors but Greenberg is the day to day man. At least thats how ive understood this group to be put together

I'd argue that Nolan is the face of this ownership group
but your point is well-taken.

The Mavericks are expected to offer Zydrunas Ilgauskas their bi-annual exception once he is bought out and clears waivers, but the “overwhelming expectation” is that he’ll return to Cleveland.
