Mavs vs Lakers Thread 2/24
Saw everyone was talking about this game today and it's a very very very very very very very very slow day.
Butler isn't playing so it won't be exactly what everyone wanted, but I can't wait to see Haywood against these Lakers.
Feel free to talk about Olympics and such as well. Enjoy!
Ugh, 75 words. GO MAVS GO MAVS GO MAVS GO MAVS GO MAVS GO MAVS GO MAVS GO MAVS.

Loving the Mavs' defensive effort right now
Stevenson’s playing the Antoine Wright role tonight, and doing it better than Wright ever did.
Stevenson is looking pretty sexy in the first Q.

They got out to a huge lead...
..then had a bogus flagrant called on Lomers (their Shawn Bradley), which got them upset and allowed A&M to get their bearing and come storming back.
This exact thing has happened in both of their games this year. Been a close game ever since then, Baylor up 4 at half, 2 right now.

A&M is ranked 22 right now.
And Baylor is unranked. They’re both probably similarly talented teams, though very, very different styles. They’ve both been in and out of the top 25, though neither have cracked the top 15.
Probably a battle for the 4th best Big 12 team right now.

Eh. Rankings are kinda crap this year. (any year really)
Tech was also in the top 20 at one point in the year too. I don’t put much stock in it. Baylor has the better talent I think, but A&M isn’t a pushover either.

I think Baylor has better talent.
But A&M plays better defense, especially as a team. They are better in the front court (though Udoh helps a lot for Baylor) and Baylor’s better in the back court.

To be fair...
…the refs haven’t been awful in either game. It’s just that both games have seen a very questionable flagrant call on Lomers that ended up turning around the momentum and it’s very frustrating.
I have high hopes for this game because Baylor got away from their 3 pt addiction from early in the game and were rewarded by a lot of Aggies having 2 fouls right now.

I wouldn't exactly call any foul of Lomers questionable.
He tends to deserve what he gets, though he definitely does not deserve the absolutely vicious hatred from Aggies.

I've got no problem with Sloan.
I thought the dunk off the backboard with 2 seconds left up fifteen was a little classless, but I’m tired of having these “You guys have no class,” “No, YOU GUYS have no class” arguments over and over again.

Is it me, or do the Mavs get more calls when they are playing the Lakers?
I seem to recall Phil getting ticked off at the refs during one of their games where there were like 40 calls against the Lakers and only 19 against the Mavs.

I must say...
The Kidd-Terry-Marion-Dirk-Haywood lineup is really entertaining. Maybe it’s just because they’re beating the Lakers right now, but they look like they enjoy playing with each other and are figuring out their roles. Here’s hoping a healthy Damp and Butler push Barea and Najera into very minor roles. Though, I guess that would mean Carlisle trusting RoddyB more than Barea, but one can hope…

NBA executive vice president Stu Jackson phoned Butler on Tuesday and told him to leave his straws at home. Butler did not play against the Lakers due to a reaction to medication, so he was unavailable for comment. But, the Mavs confirmed that the league is serious about outlawing straw chewing.
“It’s against the rules,” Mavs owner Mark Cuban said.
I just looked this up a little.
Turns out the guy goes through about 12 a game. He started chewing on toothpicks in college, then switched to straws. There are clips of him doing interviews about it. I really enjoys McDonald’s, Burger King, and Cheesecake Factory straws.

Thabeet
8pts 2rbs and 4 fouls in his debut
We need to not always make hard work out of sex- Rick Carlisle.
Well, that's part of it
Why the hell does a team draft Thabeet when one could easily make the case that its best player is a center?
Add to that the fact that most people had serious questions about the guy as a prospect and he wasn’t considered a legit #2… It was just a poor decision.
i concur
especially considering the quality of the next picks after him. He was a bad choice, it’s way to soon to right him off though. They did pick up Sam Young though in the first as well and he looks like he could be a decent player.
After the show I want Greg Oden to tuck us both in and tell us stories about the old days. - Will Ferrell
The thing is

Remember to retire Fin's number, Mark.

Experience is overrated. Look at the Golden State matchup 3 years ago… a bad matchup can absolutely kill you.
No kidding
We lost one game to them and now it’s some nightmare matchup?
They really have none of the attributes of that Golden State team, and frankly, these Mavericks really have none of the attributes of that ’07 team.

Our size and strength will give them problems inside. Haywood should thrive.
The biggest problem is Westrbook with Kidd guarding him. Which is why getting Roddy B ready is important.
Question
Are you using that Golden State series as the sole proof that “experience is overrated?”
by brettgardner on Feb 27, 2010 10:00 AM CST up reply actions
Sole proof? No
I believe in it as a general rule. I’m not big on throwing out microcosms and declaring them the reason for my statement, but I haven’t seen any sort of study conducted. by Conjunction on Feb 27, 2010 11:07 AM CST up reply actions
I'm not scoffing at your opinion
I just wondered if you had any empirical basis on which you were basing that opinion.
I don’t really think playoff experience is that much of a factor, but I do think that actual NBA experience probably is. And OKC just doesn’t have that much of it. A very, very young team.
by brettgardner on Feb 27, 2010 11:15 AM CST up reply actions
Nah
I’ve got no research.
Admittedly, I’m scared more and more every day by the Thunder. There’s an obscene amount of talent there, and if Durant’s complementary guys step up just a little this year, they could be deadly.
by Conjunction on Feb 27, 2010 11:20 AM CST up reply actions
I think your fear is certainly warranted for 2012, maybe 2011.
But right now, they are too green to pose a huge threat. Dallas would wipe the floor with them in the playoffs. Unfortunately, Durants complimentary guys are just as inexperienced as he is. The Westbrook kid would really have to play way beyond his age to have OKC give the Mavs a run for their money.

I find
Mike Fisher’s post-game analysis really odd. First, he can’t get out fast enough that he watched the game with Del Harris. But what really struck me as odd was how he kept referring to Mike Woodson as Al Roker, as if he even remotely resembled the man.
Boy, that guy really rubs me the wrong way. The site is really only good for David Lord, who is awesome. But Fisher’s content is pretty terrible, and the bizarre commenting system is laughably horrible.
Have to agree
Seems that name calling crap would be more tolerable if we were a bad team (though still very annoying and unnecessary). Instead, it appears he wants to get some lame street cred for talking smack. I don’t get it

More liked, “lacks elite players, only solid starter types”.
I mean, here you talk about a bunch of rookies who have already proven themselves as possible stars/above-average starters (Evans, Curry, Jennings, Harden, Collison and whatelse) and good rotation players (Lawson, Blair, Gibson, Jerebko, Thornton, Cassipi) and you still haven’t finished assessing a bunch of guys (Rubio and Griffin are the big guys, we all know what Roddy could do and then there’s Jrue, Flynn, DeRozan, so on. Might not all work out, but this draft could keep getting better over the next few seasons.)

Yeah
I think he’s just been demonstrably wrong in his PG rotation. For every misstep Roddy makes based on his rookiness(and he makes quite a few), Barea makes because he’s just not a very good player.

beginning to lean more and more toward the former
especially since roddy looks good. mortgaging the future for a veteran like kidd is made easier when it really only set you back a couple of years.
the picks still hurt though
You really think so?
I feel that Courtney Lee + Harris is nowhere near equivalent to what Kidd brings. And you have to at least say that Kidd was worth one 1st.
by brettgardner on Mar 4, 2010 11:59 AM CST up reply actions
it's not what NJ did with them
it’s what we could have done with them. I’m thinking this year, we could have used a 1st rounder. But I don’t think it’s a given that the picks make the trade a bust or anything
sorry
confused since he plays for the nets now. we would have taken lee? well obviously that doesn’t seem like a good deal right now but there is another pick. But these last couple of years, I think it’s possible we would have been struggling to make the playoffs.
Well I'm assuming
I feel like realistically, we would have taken one of this group:
Lee
Batum
Arthur
Chalmers
Maybe DeAndre Jordan
Any would be a nice piece to have right now, but not enough.
And I guess my original point was that Harris + a first is at least equal value for Kidd (though not really enough). I guess you can make the argument that a second 1st is too much, but if that 1st is any of those guys above, it’s probably worth it.

i don’t want to jinx it but the teams the mavs have been playing lately really are awful. So many flaws. It’s still hard to rattle off a win streak like this in the NBA just because shooting can get cold or the other team can get hot. But the Bulls just don’t know what to do against the zone except have Rose shoot the ball.

I love Roddy B's game so freaking much
He needs to move in with JKidd this summer and do nothing but learn how to run an offense. He’s got the scoring down, and will only improve; I’m convinced he can become a 20 ppg guy-and an efficient one at that. If he learns to pass well, holy shit. We have our next franchise player.
And to think, we got him-and a throwaway 2nd rounder- for BJ Mullens!
The creativity he shows around the rim in making baskets in uncanny
And I can’t seeing a point guard ever do what he did to Brad Miller last night.
Carlisle looked
particularly happy with that win, watching them leave the court and walk to their locker room.
Can we pass LA? From DB.com..
Right now, the Lakers are 46-18. Of LA’s final 18: 11 are roadies, 10 are against clubs with winning records, eight are against teams that might be considered top-tier contenders and there are four B-2-B’s.
Right now, the Mavs are 43-21. Of Dallas’ final 18: Eight are roadies, nine are against winning teams, seven are against "top-tier’’ types and there are just two B-2-B’s.
Don't think so
but I will happily take the second seed.

theoretically speaking, the nice thing about the first seed would be that you’d let Denver and LA battle it out in the second round. Of course Utah is no easy matchup for Dallas.

we don’t really have any tough road games, though we do have boston, SAS, Den, orlando at home. Of course, with the mavs, it’s not really about the caliber of team, more about whether enough people on the team have good enough nights and they can keep from blowing leads.

I have a giant sense of self-satisfaction for being high on him
Then again, I whiffed on Earl Clark and Jeff Teague being good, didn’t like picking Roddy B at that point in mocks (as it turned out, everyone else I wanted was gone by the on draft day) because all I read was that he was a project with a dodgy jumper (which turned out to be wrong) and badly underestimated Tyreke Evans because of an inconsistent jumpshot. And especially bad, Beasley being better at #1 than Rose.
Speaking of the 2008 draft, anyone want to rate it? First seven look very good, Augustin fell off a cliff, Joe Alexander never made sense, Lopez is terrific and good stuff after the top 10: Bayless, McGee and Randolph still have huge upsides; Thompson and Hibbert are pretty good; Courtney Lee, Batum, Hill, Chalmers, Mbah a Mboute, CDR, Dragic all good role players.) And Shan Foster! Is he ever going to play in the league?

I liked him too
But probably not enough. Here’s what I said:
He sure does impress me.
I don’t think he’ll turn into a star necessarily, but it just seems to me that he’s a guy you can put on a winning team and not have to worry about him.
He’s small and crafty. NBAdraft.net’s comparison of him to Darrell Armstrong is spot on, to me. Getting a young Armstrong sure wouldn’t be that bad.

this game is ugly
haywood looked slow, kidd winded, dirk not running out on defensive assignments, butler picking up two quick fouls. apparently the day off did more bad than good
They're hitting everything, we're missing everything
Could just be one of those games or things will even out
that's a really optimistic way to look at it
we are putting up terrible shots and they are getting open looks. and we’re also getting frozen out on the boards on both ends because nobody wants to jump
i'm fine if shots aren't falling
but there’s no reason we shouldn’t be able to drive to the basket a lot more. settling for jumpshots and giving up offensive rebounds is unacceptable.
I actually do think they’ll come out with a bit more energy after the half. they just need to keep it around a 10 point game
lead down to 4
