Richard Durrett on the Rangers' fifth starter
Richard Durrett has a piece up today looking at the competition for the Rangers' #5 starter. With Derek Holland slowed early on with a knee injury, I'm even more confident that Brandon McCarthy will end up in the rotation to start the season, but the job is apparently up for grabs.

B-Mac and Harden in the rotation is asking for all kinds of health related issues.
Still, if he’s healthy and effective the Rangers should put him in. He’s out of options right?
McCarthy is NOT out of options
He is however, considered a major league vet, which means he must be put on league wide revocable waivers before being optioned.
I hate to say this, but I’d like to see the Rangers make a deal this spring, sending out McCarthy and Mendoza and getting in an infielder who doesn’t expect to start and won’t trip over his shoelaces at second, short, or third. Anyone know of an example?
Oh my god! What can it be? We're all doomed! Who's flying this thing?
-Wash
Can't trade him right now
which makes putting him in even more important. He has a good first half and the Rangers can get at least something tangible for him. Trade him now and they’ll be lucky to get a low A player with a low ceiling.
Agree
I think McCarthy’s value is at an all time low right now. He has to prove he can stay healthy or no one will take the risk of trading anything of present day value for him.

They'd get more than that.
But I agree it’d be more wise to wait after his beast 1st half, if you wanted to go down that route.
That seems like a pretty poor deal for the Rangers
McCarthy isn’t a poor starter, just injury prone. If Mendoza has a good spring, he should be enough to bring in some crappy utility IF vet who won’t hurt you defensively.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

No.
2 back end rotation guys (especially in the NL), one with a decent ceiling, for a guy who will be a backup infielder? No thanks.
I’d rather roll with Arias or Lemon or whatever and just stick McCarthy in the bullpen if they really didn’t feel like giving him the No. 5 spot.
If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?

Its sad
that if we don’t make some kind of deal like that, then at least one of them will be available for free in April. No way we are putting Mendoza on the 25, so we pretty much have to deal him. And McCarthy is in a real pickle trying to win the number 5 rotation slot from (IMO) a better option in Holland.
Oh my god! What can it be? We're all doomed! Who's flying this thing?
-Wash
I don't think the Rangers need to make any deals now or in April
We need to trade for a backup infielder? Christ, if that’s the worst thing that happens to them the season’s already a success. Here are the weaknesses:
Catcher. But we still have two young guys with pretty decent ceilings. Let’s not freak out just yet.
Backup IFer. Arias or someone else has to be able to provide replacement level results.
Maybe 1B. There’s a guy in AAA that might be able to step in if necessary.
I’m not too worried rolling with what they got for a while.
"You promised me, Eckstein, that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I noticed that during the most trying periods of my life, there have only been one set of prints in the sand. Why, when I have needed you most, have you not been there for me?" David Eckstein replied, "Because my little legs had gotten tired, and you were carrying me." And I looked down and saw that I was still carrying David Eckstein.
Then he grounded out weakly to second.
B-Mac
If healthy he needs to be put in the rotation….let the kids get some more starts at AAA. Then if/when McCarthy breaks down or shows he doesn’t have it…then we go with the young guys.
Use all of your available options first…then go with the touth

Why?
He’s been really good in AAA but just hasn’t translated that into anything at the big league level.
He’s not terribly young anymore, but he gets a bit of leeway from me due to the fact that he didn’t start pitching until so late.
We need to be patient a little longer and see if he can maybe solve whatever’s keeping him from pitching like the guy who owns the PCL.

A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
He's consistently averaged about a k per inning (or more) at every minor league level, and has steadily improved his walk rate as he's progressed.
Maybe he’s one of those guys who’s awesome in AAA but just doesn’t have the stuff to get big league hitters out, but I’m willing to give him a few more chances to prove that.
A guy with his minor league track record deserves that, imo.

Yoga is quite beneficial
I’ve ignored it for far too long during my 6 years of back pain…while it hasn’t really done much for my back, it has completely taken away my plantar fascitis pain and I’m holding out hope the back is down the line

If the Rangers don't make the play-offs this year I'm gonna go all Epic Bearded Man on your ass.
OK - instead of Wiki-ing - I'll ask for firsthand knowledge
What do you do and what does it do? I lift and do some cardio because I’m vain. What’s yoga good for? If you tell me “stretching” well, what’s that good for (avoid the sex jokes)?
"You promised me, Eckstein, that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I noticed that during the most trying periods of my life, there have only been one set of prints in the sand. And I looked down and saw that I was still carrying David Eckstein.
Then he grounded out weakly to second.
I don't do it right now...but I've done bikram yoga before
that’s the one where they stick you in a really hot room and you sweat your ass off. I found it gave me great balance, helped with a back problem, helped me sleep better and of course more limber which is really the primary reason I did it. I do find it kind of boring though. I’m getting back into jiu-jitsu soon because at least that was fun and involved a lot of stretching too so it accomplished pretty much what I wanted with yoga and you get to learn a lot and I don’t find it boring at all.
If the Rangers don't make the play-offs this year I'm gonna go all Epic Bearded Man on your ass.
Makes you use a lot of seldom used muscles in your core.
Strengthening those muscles can eleviate some forms of back pain and whatnot by putting those different muscles that’ve been strengthened into the mix.
It can also help make you more aware of your posture and makes the muscles associated with proper posture stronger and therefor it’s easier to engage in proper posture and shit.
The stretching benefits of Yoga is that it can help you keep from tightening up if you’re prone to that kind of stuff.
Many people suffer from tight shoulders, backs and legs. (My Dad is VERY prone to tight back and shoulders) Yoga can help with these.
For the record I’ve only done it a handful of times and I’m not a doctor or a physical therapist or a slutty male nurse with a heart of gold and blood that has some gold dust in it, so I’m not a true expert.

Like I said
I ignored it for so long, kept telling myself to try it out; I have two bulging discs in my L4/L5/S1, and then my neck started going out; add Plantar Fascitis to that and life wasn’t fun at all. If I played basketball, ran, played softball, lifted weights, sat at a computer, slept, anything – it hurt. If I was inactive, it hurt even more.
Finally trying Yoga (I am doing P90X which is pretty good, as cheezy as it is – so I do the Yoga X version), it was very difficult the first time. I was sweating like a pig, in lots of pain, and unable to hold the poses for the full 30 seconds as they do, if I could even get into the poses in the first place. 3 weeks later I’ve seen huge results. I bet if I did Yoga X twice a week I would be a completely different “machine” in a month…and that’s my goal.

For me
It’s helped my recovery and performance in other activities, specifically running and soccer. I get mighty sore after playing 90 minutes of soccer these days, and have had a fair number of injuries over the last few years. Yoga has helped with my performance and my recovery from other exercise activities. I’ve mixed it in with a workout regimen that focuses less on isolated weight training/free weights in favor of more functional training, core strengthening, balance, flexibility, and exercises that use more than one muscle group at a time (all of which yoga does as well). I’ve been really happy with the results so far!

Possible AAA Switch between the Astros and Rangers
I just recently hear about the rumors of the rangers and the astros of possibly switching AAA teams. I was wondering if any of you knew what the possibilities of that were, and what it would mean for the rangers organization?
Yeah.
It first was a thought just thrown out there since Nolan still has ties to the Round Rock team. But it’s been gaining steam and I think the Houston Chronicle had an article somewhat recently about a switch between the two teams.
I know that early on when this started ‘leaking’ Round Rock was upset that the Astros weren’t committing more resources to their farm system.

Other things the Rangers will accomplish in 2010:
•Become the first team to send all 25 players to the All-Star Game.
•Go 161-1, but only out of humility.
•Start a home run conga line, like in that Bugs Bunny cartoon.

•Make C.J. Wilson’s Twitter more entertaining than Ozzie Guillen’s.

30/30 from cruz.. well he went 33/20 last year in 128 games and steals are something you can add to pretty much at will, though probably hurting the team to do so in meh situations. He probably won’t actually do it, but its within reason, especially if he can get his OBP up a bit.

He's pitched in parts of 5 mlb seasons
and has never put up an ERA over 5. It’d be nice if the Rangers were really at the point where someone like that has no value, but we arn’t there quite yet.
Hes injury prone and doesn’t go dep enough into games, but hes a perfectly reasonable back end option when healthy imo.
the preceding post was a great success.
He won't kill you
But there are better options-and options with a lot more upside-out there. I don’t believe he’s currently better than Derek Holland, for instance, and he certainly doesn’t offer you more going forward.
Depth. Depth. Depth.
It never hurts to have an abundance of 5th starters on your team. Especially ones that have 3rd roto potential. You’re correct in Holland having a better upside. But I don’t think it would hurt to see how long B-Mac can do out of the gates (no pun intended).
And I agree with Shep. We aren’t in a spot where we can start flicking away guys like McCarthy because we have all these stud arms in the wings waiting to blow people away. Hopefully in 2-3 years we can say that. Not quite there yet.

I would prefer to see him optioned or used in the bullpen as well
But he’s a very acceptable 5th starter. I’d just rather see Holland in the rotation, because Holland is a better pitcher.
It likely won’t matter anyway, since McCarthy’s only due for about 100 innings, tops.
Morality you can fake. Fun you either have or you don't.
If he's the 5th start that means he's healthy.
He’s a good pitcher when he’s actually pitching.
I understand the frustration with the spindly fuck, but if he’s healthy and pitching in our rotation, that’s a good thing for us, imo.
