Yeah, the inconsistency of the outside shooters has been frustrating to say the least

But it seems like Turge is compensating by focusing more on BD and Loubeau. Hopefully the big men can keep it up.

If Hibbert and Middleton could improve on that sub-30% FG accuracy, that’d be great.

Yeah, that's really aggravating

It’s not as if Turge just ignores free throws, insiders have said many times that there is no shortage of free throw practice. It’s just some sort of mental block with this team. Very frustrating.

by FuturePants on Feb 4, 2010 2:23 PM CST up reply actions

Tech

gives teams problems with the efficiency of their motion offense. They are one of the few really good motion teams left in college basketball. Defensively, they still struggle despite their supposed renewed focus on the defensive end. They often play games in the 80’s and 90’s. In the end, their inability to get stops when they need them will probably be their doom.

Well

A&M looked awful entering conference play last year – IIRC they started 1-5, but went on a great run at the end and made the tournament, so if Tech can live up to some of their hype, they can turn it around. I just haven’t seen them play yet.

Random trade thought cause I'm bored...

I think the team’s biggest question mark is catcher. Last year the lack of production hurt us, and if salty continues to be an injury risk. Do you think we could land a top 10 catcher for a package including one of salty/tea, one or two out of McCarthy, Harrison, Hurley, Hunter, and then maybe a minor leaguer or two if need be (someone in the 5-20 range of our prospects)? If we could get a dependable catcher it would help our offense out a lot. Plus we’d only be giving up some of our depth, not necessarily our premiere talent. Thoughts? Feelings?

my better is better than your better.

by rangerjake on Feb 4, 2010 10:09 AM CST via mobile reply actions

We probably could...

But, I’d rather keep our catchers and watch them get better

by BuckyB on Feb 4, 2010 10:13 AM CST up reply actions

I don't know how much value McCarthy or Hurley have right now

Isn’t it strange how far we’ve come? This time last year and two years ago we were slobbering over our “catching depth”

I don't get why everyone thinks we have to have a great offensive catcher

There are only a handful of those in the entire league. Would I like a little more from who we have…sure. But the strides Salty made defensively last year before his arm fell off was good to see. Our catcher is going to hit at the bottom of our lineup regardless so offense really isn’t of utmost concern from that position

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Feb 4, 2010 10:21 AM CST up reply actions

I see it as the position of greatest possible improvement...

I was enamored by the thought of Salty being a masher out of the catcher spot, and I’m fine hanging onto him for another year or two and hoping that he acheives his potential. However having 3 or 4 quality pitchers who could start for other teams start the year in AAA is a waste of assets in my mind. Not to mention we are going to have to make a trade at some point because of the 40 crunch coming after this season. If you can take Salty and his .661 OPS, and add in some of our depth that will probably not make a big impact and that we are going to need to get rid of eventually anyway, and get back a catcher with around a .750 OPS, then that is a legitimate improvement for our offense at a minimal cost. Plus I am very worried of what this team would look like if Salty doesn’t recover from his injury and is out for the whole year, are you ready to go with TT as the starting catcher and some random veteran scrub as his backup? I am fine waiting on this type of deal to see who has what kind of a season, but come July if we are not getting some sort of offensive production from our catcher and a deal is out there I don’t see why you wouldn’t improve the team if given the chance.

my better is better than your better.

by rangerjake on Feb 4, 2010 11:05 AM CST up reply actions

I understand your concern

However as was pointed out there aren’t that many top catchers period. The elite are not viable trade targets. The others are only marginal improvements and none offer the upside that Salty still offers. If Salty was a 28 or 29 year old then I would be more inclined but given his age and potential I don’t see the need in trading away a potential mid rotation pitcher to gain a slight improvement in the 8 spot in our lineup.

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Feb 4, 2010 11:28 AM CST up reply actions

Top 10 catcher

wouldn’t help the teams offense that much, you’re talking about a marginal improvement at a potentially very high cost in trade. You’re better off seeing if Saltalamacchia fulfills at least some of his potential and addressing the bat need midseason when you know more.

Sorta

Top ten is either pretty damn good or I’m good rolling with what we got. Last year, with 200 PAs, the top 10 in OPS (both leagues) were:
Mauer
Posada
Martinez
Napoli
McCann
Montero .832
Iannetta .804
Buck .782
Olivo .781 (I think Olivo and Buck probably split time due to splits)
Ruiz .780

I don’t see anyone at the bottom I’d be crazy about and we can’t get anyone at the top that wouldn’t cost an arm and leg. I’d prefer to see what Salty and Tea can do.

"You promised me, Eckstein, that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I noticed that during the most trying periods of my life, there have only been one set of prints in the sand. Why, when I have needed you most, have you not been there for me?" David Eckstein replied, "Because my little legs had gotten tired, and you were carrying me." And I looked down and saw that I was still carrying David Eckstein.

by WyoRanger on Feb 4, 2010 11:01 AM CST up reply actions

Absolutely...

Not to mention the chemistry the C’s (Teagarden having caught most of these guys coming up) already have with the rotation. I think our catchers did a pretty damn good job with our pitchers last year, just look at the improvement in our team ERA. I’m not concerned with offense so much out of our C’s as much as just controlling the game defensively.

Trade rumors

Hearing that Houston is listening to offers for both Oswalt and Berkman, should the Ranger’s get involved? Oswalt is a grity veteran who has something left in the tank and could prove to be a veteran presence for our young guns. Anybody like this idea? Rotation of 1. Harden 2. Feldman 3. Oswalt 4. I like Oswalt, but given the teams needs

if they were going down that route, I’d much rather have them pursue Berkman. Still, both have huge contracts, Oswalt’s has had persistent back trouble these last few years, and Berkman is showing signs of no longer being able to hit, and the price for either is likely to be exhorbitant, so I’d have to pass.

by MikeEl on Feb 4, 2010 10:29 AM CST up reply actions

Berkman

He has a full no-trade and I don’t think Drayton will trade him to Texas.

That said, his contract has two years left at $14.5 million and $15 million (actually an option), so his contract is very reasonable, and he posted an OPB+ of 139 last year, so I’m not sure he’s “showing signs of no longer being able to hit”.

Berkman would be a perfect player to add to this team, but I don’t see it happening.

Signs of decline

In the first half of 2008 he was having a monster season then fell into the worst slump of his career and has only marginally bounced back since then. I find it especially alarming that he seems to lose his power by mid-season as the last two years he’s hit only a combined 14HR’s and 58 RBIs. He’s still a patient hitter who can get on base, but he’s definitely showing signs that he’s no longer the premier frontline hitter he once was.

But I think what Houston would want would be way to much for a guy who is in his decline. Not interested at all in Berkman. The guys we have (Davis, Smoak) are very respectable defensive 1B. And in my opinion Davis will return to Crush this year and be traded with some other pieces at the ASB for a top of the line P for the playoff run, which in turn makes way for the Smoakster. if the money is there. I’m not as interested in Oswalt for what he would cost.

Can he play 1B?

I suppose you could try and add Davis to the trade and make Berkman your 1B until Smoak is ready. At that point maybe he takes over the DH role from Vlad if decides to go elsewhere or you don’t feel like re-signing him

by Arlington Stadium Legend on Feb 4, 2010 10:59 AM CST up reply actions

well

that is selling very low on Davis. I don’t think you get Berkman without giving up Smoak.

My guess is that given Berkman’s salary, the Astros would trade him for Smoak plus a couple of good (but not Perez/Feliz/Holland) prospects. That’d be a great deal for the Astros, and I think a strong one for the Rangers as well.

Go Rice Owls!

by JBImaknee on Feb 4, 2010 11:02 AM CST up reply actions

But

if you can give up Davis instead of Smoak, that isn’t selling low. They won’t take both so I see your point there. But if you could sub Davis for Smoak, you have to do that.

"calmer than you are dude" Walter (Big Lebowski)

by Arlington Stadium Legend on Feb 4, 2010 11:04 AM CST up reply actions

of course

but I think if you build the trade around Davis, you have to include Feliz or Perez as well.

by JBImaknee on Feb 4, 2010 11:05 AM CST up reply actions

Honestly

anytime we are talking about acquiring a talent like Berkman there is no way the deal is done without one of Holland/Feliz/Smoak/Perez. If I am a team talking a trade with the Rangers those are the first 4 names I mention and i even bet that Elvis is even grasped at as well. The Rangers could acquire any player in baseball right now with their talent.

watch out

I, however, think Berkman would be the best hitter on this club, by a mile, and would be a great 1b/DH alongside Davis who may/may not work out.

I remember

some time ago a SI article about Berkman that made me really like him. He was telling a great story about playing at the old TCU field with that awful concrete ramp in CF and he got his foot caught in a plastic bag near that wall and a routine fly ball turned into an inside the park HR. He said Wayne was down the foul line dog cussing him as the runner circled the bases. The way he told it made me laugh hysterically. Seems like a really cool guy to be around.
