Sunday a.m. Rangers things

Another very quiet day out there for Rangers news...maybe there's something else sports-related that is distracting everyone...

The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer has a story about Kasey Kiker, and the strides he made last year.

That's it, it appears.

In the meantime, I know it is slow and boring, but can we try to avoid having a bunch of insults and namecalling in the comments today?

I'm with you on the Saints

it seems like the VAST majority of people are taking the Colts by a million…At the very least, I think it’ll be a very close game, and I actually like the Saints to win.

I'm going with Norm, even though that's a kiss of death.

give me the colts

4-15 for first time appearances in the super bowl plus the tampa bay curse. No team has ever won a super bowl the same year they lost the tampa bay in the regular season. Saints got beat by them in what, week 15, 16?

Norm was 10 games under .500 this year

and also had the Cowboys on a triple play v. the Vikes.

The Colts really haven’t been a dominant team this year …hold on…in the sense that they completely obliterate teams. They won several close games throughout the season but also had a tremendous amount of good fortune. Truly dominant teams don’t fall behind 17-6 to the Jets at home.

Not having Freeney is going to hurt and I also think Payton is a heckuva coach.

Nawlins 24-20.

Why take the under ?

I know that a lot of gambling vets like the under because SB offenses rarely live up to their billing…but these really were 2 of the top offenses during the year and just hung 28+ points each (in regulation) on 2 of the best defenses in their Championship games.

I’m not saying that the under is a stupid bet, I just don’t think it’s such a slam dunk bet that you’d throw it out there in addition to your line pick.

If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?
JD: Eddie Guardado.

by GhettoBear04 on Feb 7, 2010 3:10 PM CST up reply actions

There is a theory out there..

…that Peyton is going to slow the offense down, milk a lot of time off the clock, and do a bunch of those short 4-5 yard passes to limit the amount of time the Saint offense can spend on the field.

by Adam J. Morris on Feb 7, 2010 3:15 PM CST up reply actions

Sure.

I feel like both SD and Indy learned from their past (and maybe NE’s record setting season) and decided that while scoring points is always the end goal, that milking clock is just as important. I really think that’s the reason that Peyton didn’t set any record this year, but his team performed so well. And I remember being shocked out how well SD could possess the ball against the Cowboys, a team that is pretty damn good at it. Neither of them have great running games, but they get it done.

To clarify what I was saying earlier, I would probably bet the under if forced to pick one. But I just don’t think it’s that slam dunk of a bet when you have 2 of the top offenses in the league that have proven they can score very quickly (especially in the 2 min before halftime) that the under is a very safe bet. But then again, I don’t think either side should be super confident with Colts +5. This is not Colts v Bears, either team really could win. If you were going to add a bet to the line, I think Superbowl MVP would be a better one. Saints + Brees, Colts + Manning with Sharper and Garcon to hedge your bets respectively.

If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?

Colts 31, Saints 20

Peyton struggles early, but he’ll figure it out. Saints are forced to settle for field goals.

I forget what the terms are

..but from what I’ve read it’s very questionable whether or not he’ll be able to pitch at all this year, and if he does he’s likely to suck. I’m guessing they got him for 2011 or something.

by Black Francis on Feb 7, 2010 10:57 AM CST up reply actions

Although Cot's doesn't have it listed, the media reported a mutual option for 2011.

But for Seattle, and for $1.5 million dollars… I don’t know. It doesn’t strike me as a terrible signing for that club, but I can’t imagine it’s striking fear into the hearts of the other AL West front offices, either.

by Snark on Feb 7, 2010 11:05 AM CST up reply actions

I should've thought to look over at LL first.
There’s also an $8m mutual option for 2011, but mutual options never get exercised, because if the player is bad the team won’t pick it up, and if the player is good the player won’t pick it up. I’m not entirely sure why mutual options even exist.

From here.

by Snark on Feb 7, 2010 1:00 PM CST up reply actions

This seems like a good mutual option to me

If Bedard can’t come back till the ASB lets say hes only gonna have a half seasons worth of stats to go off of for next winter. In this economy with guys like Harden and Sheets (high injury risks) getting what they got if he pitches well in that half a season 8 mil for 2011 may be a nice salary.

Correct me if I'm wrong

Don’t you collect a draft pick if a Type A or B free agent walks in a mutual option year? Sounds like a good reason for them to exist to me.

It is

if the player doesn’t accept the mutual option, the team can still offer arbitration and collect that pick.

Teams offer them to give a few more $$$ to the player without adding to the team’s payroll for this year.

The team still has to offer arbitration after the option's declined, no?

From a compensation pick standpoint, how is this different than a simple club (or player) option, or for that matter a one-year deal with no option at all?

I’m not sure I follow the second sentence…

by Snark on Feb 7, 2010 10:31 PM CST up reply actions

There's a buy out

in the mutual option even if the player declines it. It’s a way of controlling the payroll for this year while still giving the player more $$$ value on the contract.

by FirebatM3 on Feb 7, 2010 10:33 PM CST up reply actions

OK ~ that makes sense, I suppose.

I wonder how much it actually matters, but I can see how it could, given the right financial circumstances.

I still don’t follow the point about the compensation picks. How does a mutual option change the calculus, there?

by Snark on Feb 7, 2010 10:37 PM CST up reply actions

Nada

the team can still offer arbitration to the player even if the player declines the option. They still get a pick if the player qualifies and another team signs them.

So, if the Vlad and Harden gambles turn out well, the Rangers might have a lot of freakin picks coming to them.

Exactly.

That was my point, in responding to rib02a above. The mutuality of the option has nothing to do with the compensation protocol.

by Snark on Feb 7, 2010 10:43 PM CST up reply actions

I think

it matters for teams like the Rangers which had a severely limited budget. I don’t know why the Ms are doing it, maybe to push the final dollar value of the contract above offers from, say, Baltimore.

by bigsteve on Feb 7, 2010 10:58 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah ~ I thought I was seeing something different,

but it was a poorly worded explanation.

Does seem that the mutual option’s main purpose is to provide deferred payroll, and I’d imagine that the lower transaction costs explain why that deferred money isn’t packaged another way.

by Snark on Feb 7, 2010 11:04 PM CST up reply actions

yeah

Although like I said in this case I could actually see it being exercised. Say Bedard comes back in Mid July and struggles through about 4 starts but then finishes the year strong. His overall numbers may not be steller which along with his injury history probably means he won’t make much more than 8 million in 2011 anyway. And at that price the Ms could exercise it and hope he builds off the strong finish along with how he did in 2009 and say 8 million is a bargain.

Neither of the Rangers cases look to be exercisable but Bedards does

Adam posted a link showing he's hitting the 60 day DL right off the bat.

If I read correctly, he won’t be able to start his rehab until July.

Can't pitchers on the 60-day DL spend half that time pitching with a minor-league team?

Bedard’s rehab won’t have to wait until July, and given 60 days, he could be off the DL sometime in June. It’s much more a question of how quickly he’s ready to face MLB batters.

by Snark on Feb 7, 2010 1:13 PM CST up reply actions

I don't think he will physically be able to pitch until July in the majors.

He is rehabilitating with a physical therapist in his native Canada following surgery in August to repair a torn labrum in his pitching shoulder. Last week, Mariners trainer Rick Griffin said the normal recovery time for the procedure is 10-12 months. That would have Bedard making his season debut in June at the earliest.

This makes it sound like he won’t be able to even be in the minors until June, meaning he probably won’t be in the majors until July. I wasn’t meaning to say he wouldn’t be able to be in the MLB because of the 60 day DL thing. It was because of his pitching.

I also found out you can’t be put on the DL until the first day of the season. So that’s why they had to drop a guy off the 40 to make room for Bedard until their first game. Then he’ll hit the 60 and they’ll bring someone up on their 40 until Bedard is ready to come back I assume.

OK, but joining the Mariners' rotation in July is different than starting rehab in July.

There’s also this, though I’m skeptical, since this is from Bedard’s agent:

As for Bedard’s health, coming off last August’s surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder, Pieper said Bedard is going off the estimation of Dr. Lewis Yocum, who performed the surgery.

"He told us eight to nine months, which puts you in April or May,‘’ he said. “I do understand that there are reports all over the board. In fairness to other doctors, we’re going off Dr. Yocum. He’s the surgeon, he’s well respected, he’s the one that knows Erik best”

[…]

"The way Erik feels is consistent with being able to come back at that time… We don’t want to over-promise. We’re going off the information we have, and that’s kind of the date we’re shooting for. If he comes back in the middle of May, boy, that would be outstanding."

by Snark on Feb 7, 2010 1:28 PM CST up reply actions

You got me. Month fail on my part.

I should have put either he wouldn’t be ready for the Majors until July or he wouldn’t be ready to rehad until June. And I suppose those are just predictions on my part and what I’ve read. Namely his trainer.

I did see that blurb you put up, but like you said it was from his agent and I didtn’ put too much stock into it. I’d take his trainers word over his agents 90% of the time.

I always admired him because I’m sure a billoin people told him that because of TS he wouldn’t be able to pursue that line of work. I think about him and his struggles and overcoming negative people when someone tells me that my dreams are out of reach.

My wife (then gf) has gone and keeps trying to get me to go, but I always get the impression that you have to have lots of cash to throw around to enjoy Vegas. She tells me that there’s plenty of stuff to do that doesn’t cost a lot…but I dunno.

For the money it takes to spend 3-4 nights in Vegas, you could have a very nice vacation in a place like the Caribbean or South America, where you spend most of your money getting there but everything is cheap once you arrive. Thoughts?

well

you certainly can spend tons of money in Vegas.

But there is a lot of value in just walking from casino to casino, seeing the different resorts and so forth. I could walk around the Wynn and Bellagio all day long, though certainly couldn’t afford to play anything more than a slot machine there.

If you go downtown, stay at a place like the Golden Nugget, it isn’t as luxurious but it isn’t expensive at all – cheap room prices, good drink deals, etc. Even can find $3 tables and stuff there.

Lincecum and Scherzer were drafted the two spots before Kiker. Kiker is nowhere near those guys but hes done a pretty damn good job. Yes he walks a few too many people but damn, the kid has progressed a level each year being one of the youngest at each stop. And regardless of what scouting reports may say about his lack of velocity or whatever he has maintained a pretty consistent strikeout rate which everyone here bitches and moans about at the ML level. His ultimate future may well be as a lefty reliever in the CJ wilson mold but I think he could give us a couple really solid seasons as a starter.

Had he been in our system back at the beginning of the decade people would have been all over his nuts because our system was dry of pitching prospects. But now that we have guys like Perez, Scheppers, Holland, Feliz, etc guys seem to take guys like Kiker for granted.

Heh, I posted a roommate ad

on craigslist and got this call:

“Hi so I understand that there are two guys already there right” Yeah. “well are you guys pretty clean.?” Well, I guess about average, not too messy, keep the commons clean for sure. “oh, Ok, because I really like to clean. I really like to clean all of the time.” Oh ok well as long as you are not OCD about it. “Just to be clear, I like to be told to clean all the time, I like to be made to clean up and do my chores.” Oh I get it, Click.\

My roommate was pissed at me as we could have stored the cleaning gimp in the basement and brought him out only for chores or part talk when needed…..and rent out his room…and it would have been fine because it apparenty wasn’t in his constitution to complain. ONly in Austin.

Profar

according to Sickels in the All Questions Answered thread, the scouts from other teams aren’t nearly as high on Profar as the Rangers are. Isn’t this the exact opposite of what Goldstein said?

Well

Not necessarily. Sickels has probably talked to scouts with other teams that aren’t as high on Profar as the Rangers are. Goldstein has talked to scouts that raved about his instincts, makeup, etc. Those aren’t necessarily incompatible…for one, they are probably talking to different guys.

The reality is that the Rangers probably are higher on him than most other teams, or else another team would have come in and signed him. From what I understand, only Texas and Baltimore were really all that high on him as a shortstop prospect. So it wouldn’t be surprising to me if Sickels talked to scouts with other teams who don’t think he’s as great as the Rangers think he is.

Though, it is said by some

that Sardinas is both faster and “rangier”. Profar’s two plus tools are his arm and his heart apparently. He’s like lil’ Lemon with arm strength….

by Goyogringo on Feb 7, 2010 2:42 PM CST up reply actions

He's probably going to have

quite a bit more power than Sardinas too if they both pan out.

by Brett Perryman on Feb 7, 2010 3:00 PM CST up reply actions

Given the inconsistent

accounts for our “baby andrus”, only half serious there…but the Lemon comp should give one pause (“gutsy, cerbral, winner, smart” before “plus tools”…)

by Goyogringo on Feb 7, 2010 3:06 PM CST up reply actions

Profar's tools >>>> Lemon's tools

not sure if you’re saying that or disagreeing with it, but I don’t think it’s real close. No one thinks that Lemon has the athleticism to handle SS, for example, and he doesn’t have much of an arm.

by Brett Perryman on Feb 7, 2010 3:13 PM CST up reply actions

neither

I’m saying when the first thing out of people’s mouths about a prospect are that he’s heady rather than he has plus range, speed, and golden hands then there is reason to pause and recognize the hype for what it is.

by Goyogringo on Feb 7, 2010 3:19 PM CST up reply actions

like with Andrus?

The only significant difference between Elvis Andrus and Joaquin Arias is between the ears.

by Brett Perryman on Feb 7, 2010 3:22 PM CST up reply actions

I'll take the plus tools

and a normal 16yo every time over the 16yo with “wer’e not sure” tools and the natural born leader halo. That seems to be the most important difference that you are missing: it isn’t at all clear that Profar has the range and speed that Andrus has.

by Goyogringo on Feb 7, 2010 3:27 PM CST up reply actions

He doesn't have the speed

but you are not hearing anyone question his ability at shortstop, unlike Lemon.

by Brett Perryman on Feb 7, 2010 3:50 PM CST up reply actions

A little above average?

Speed related quotes from BA/BP:

He has a chance to be a plus defender at shortstop thanks to his sure hands, plus arm and average range…His average speed plays up on the basepaths because of his intelligence.
He’s a switch-hitter with easy raw power, as well as a plus fielder with impressive speed, giving him range to both sides to go with smooth actions and an outstanding arm…Perfect World Projection: Elvis Andrus with secondary skills.

by Brett Perryman on Feb 7, 2010 6:04 PM CST up reply actions

Sickels

is also predisposed to really strange taste when it comes to international guys who haven’t played in the US. If you go through his historical rankings, besides the fact that he’s pathologically conservative with highly ranked, lower level guys (for example, last year he didn’t rank Julio Teheran in the Braves top 20, ranked Casey Kelly #11, Starlin Castro #11, Kyle Drabek #11, Derek Norris #13 – all way out of line with the other rankings and completely unnecessarily low), he picks really odd ones to be his exceptions. So I’m not putting a lot of stock into whoever he’s talking to for those reports.

Drafted before Reggie Jackson in 1966 by the Mets.

And no, I didn’t look it up- remembered it from Rob Neyer’s Big Book of Baseball Blunders.

The story was that the Mets wanted a catcher and passed on Reggie, who said he was told that the real reason was that he had a “white girlfriend,” even though the woman he was dating at the time was actually Hispanic.
