Jim Reeves on the Jon Daniels/Nolan Ryan dynamic
Jim Reeves has a column up at ESPN Dallas about the Jon Daniels/Nolan Ryan dynamic, and how the relationship between the two has improved of late.
Reeves has praise for both parties, and suggests that a lot of the tension that existed between them the first 12-18 months Ryan was with the Rangers was a result of Tom Hicks having Daniels report directly to Hicks, rather than Ryan.
Chain of command issues were a Hicks bugaboo throughout his tenure as a sports team owner, so this is no particular surprise. Reeves says, though, that since Daniels started reporting to Ryan earlier this offseason, things have improved dramatically and the two have developed a very solid working relationship.
An interesting piece, worth checking out...

I think it will be telling how strong their relationship really is when the sale goes final and Nolan is in an ownership position – he has stated that Greenberg will be on the business side and Nolan will step more into the baseball/player development side.
So instead of The Elephant In The Room
should we talk about how quadriatic equations relate to baseball, xFIPS, UZR, The Power of wOBA, the meaning of third order wins, “nightlife” in Denton, wretched movies, the meaning of the Confederate Flag, which other Rangers should have their numbers retired or what kind of commissioner Doug Melvin would make because most of the Lewinskys in here can’t handle the topic of this morning’s topic?

Definitely one of my least favorite of the beers. I did watch a show on History the other day on beer technology from the beginning to today (Modern Marvels). Fascinating.
i didnt watch that
but ive read a lot on the subject. It really is fascinating. In regards to IPAs i really take it beer by beer.

I don't like IPAs either
I’ll drink everything from pilsner to stouts but IPAs just don’t appeal to me. I think the best beer I’ve had is Affligem Dubbel although the Tripel is good too. Chimay’s good as well.

Celis White was my favorite.
In its absence, I frequently enjoy Allagash and Hoegaarden whites. Neither are as good as I remember Celis being from my college days in Austin, but they both satisfy the itch.
Celis White
Is there anywhere in Dallas that still sells it? That was my favorite beer as well.
My favorites right now are Blue Moon and Paulaner Hefeweissen- if it’s a wheat or white beer, there’s a very good chance I’ll like it.
"Jesus, Spanish- first our jobs, now our words?"
-- Sterling Archer
The Austin brewery was shut down
The assets and recipes were eventually trucked up to the Ann Arbor MI area where a Michigan brewery has reissued some varieties. I think Christine and her husband are or were still involved early on, at least. Pierre had returned to Belgium, if I recall, even while the brewery was still in Austin. Incidentally, for you Hoegaarden fans, Pierre Celis is the one who revived the german wit style in Hoegaarden long, long, ago.
The missing varieties in the Michigan version of Celis that I can think of are Pale Bock (which was not a bock, but a pale ale with abv below the state requirement to be called an ale… outside of Texas it was sold as Pale Ale), Dubbel, Trippel, and a lager called Golden. For a while they also brewed a beer called Pale Rider for Clint Eastwood, and eventually it was marketed pretty widely. It may have actually been one of their bigger sellers…
But to your question, I’ve never seen any of the Celis reissues distributed here.
The Celis story was really sad to me. They were one of the best small breweries, period, anywhere. They were just ahead of their time, and that was compounded by some bad business decisions by the Celis family that led to loss of control and a really bad business decision by Miller to shut it down. Miller’s not solely to blame, but they’re the only scapegoat left. I haven’t had a Miller product in years, and I never will. Which is fine because there’s nothing to miss.
Germans?

Clicked on Michigan Brewing’s distributors list and found this Pasadena distributor:
Hopefully more than Grand Cru is coming. That was my least favorite from Celis.

I absolutely kept that place in business in college on the White. Awesome beer. I never heard the whole story on why it shut down though. You can still get the White at Central Market here on Lovers, of course brewed in MI.

I may have to trek over there. I’ve been hassling the folks at CM on Hulen in FW for a while, to no avail.
I've never been able to develop a taste
for whites or hefeweissens. Most of them tend to be dominated by fruity flavours that just isn’t very palatable for beer.

Here's my list of
available IPA’s in North Texas I would highly recommend trying before disavowing them:
Stone IPA
Bear Republic Racer 5
Sierra Nevada Torpedo
Avery IPA
Ska Modus Hoperandi
IPA’s are hands down my favorite style of beer, but there are hits and misses. Unfortunately, none of the TX breweries (save 512 brewery) are really any good. St. Arnold’s is okay, and made better because it’s cheap, but it is not nearly as good as those listed above.
So, if you haven’t, give the above a try.

Nice List!!!
I’d have to add several:
Stone Ruination Ale
Stone Arrogant Bastard
Sierra Nevada Anniversary Ale
As a homebrewer, big hop ales are fun to make because they are easy (don’t have to lager them) and they taste fresh. So, I’m a hop-head, but they must balance out the malt. So, a 100 IBU imperial IPA I’d good as long as the malt develops at least 9 or 10% alcohol.
But my favorite style is actually German Oktoberfest/Marzens and doublebocks. Love the Munich and Caramel/crystal malts!
by Bats and Balls on Feb 9, 2010 12:38 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
I learned to like IPAs for the same reason.
pale ales are so easy to extract brew they’re almost mistake proof, then I moved on to IPAs. If lagers were easy, I may never have grown to love IPAs, but now I can’t get enough.
Yes
all of those are great, but I consider Ruination a double IPA and Arrogant Bastard a strong ale. No matter as those things are grey lines at best. They are all terrific beers. I did a homebrew of Arrogant Bastard and it came out great, I love me some Chinook.

Great Beer
Should have been on the list. I think it’s the most bitter of the bunch though and may not be perfect for an IPA beginner.
by Whiskey in my Whiskey on Feb 9, 2010 4:08 PM CST up reply actions
It is certainly
for hop heads only. I like IPAs and the first time I tried it I thought my god, that’s just hopping to see where the limit is. I came around and it’s one of my favorites now.
and I second the vote
for Racer 5. I usually get the bombers from Central Market since 1 and a half regular bottles is about all I like to drink at a time.
If you like that
pick up a bomber of the Hop Rod Rye out of the same brewery. It’s a fantastic IPA, I like it better than the Racer 5.

I like Rahr's Stormcloud...
if you’re looking for another Texas option.
They’re clearly not competing for highest abv, but it’s a solid IPA.

"Drinks are on me if Lewis posts >168IP and an era lower than 3.86." by RangerMad on Jan 20, 2010 12:36 PM PST
I'm not a fan
of any of Rahr’s stuff frankly. Same with Franconia. I just don’t really dig the german-style lager stuff.
by Whiskey in my Whiskey on Feb 9, 2010 4:09 PM CST up reply actions
Ahh...
Well, I can appreciate that. It just seemed awfully sweeping to say that Texas breweries aren’t any good at making IPAs. I think Rahr has a good selection of beers, and a good IPA. To each his own. Regardless, we’re better off today than 20 years ago. At least we have choices.
Yeah
I don’t mean they don’t make good beer, they certainly do, but they do it in the style they are accustomed. German breweries didn’t really make IPAs historically, and that type of beer isn’t in their wheelhouse. The Franconia lager is a great example of a German lager. He knows that stuff in and out.

I love the 90 minute
and the 60 is not bad. If you go to a Dogfish Brewhouse (restaurant) in VA, they have a 75 which is a mix b/w 60 and 90. It is also very good. 120 just becomes syrup as do most of their high alcohol beers (Midas, etc)
12
I liked it for what it was,it mellows some with age too. But it’s really not something you can buy or drink on a regular basis.

that's a ridiculous statement
The best craft beer, for an area, is a tie between California and Colorado. Though I will say, when you single out a few breweries in the northeast, there are a few that are tops in the US (Dogfish Head, Victory, Stoudt’s, Weyerbacher)
"The mystery of the beginning of all things is insoluble by us; and I for one must be content to remain an agnostic" - Charles Darwin, you know who he is...
Colorado does have a bunch of good ones
plus the Great American Beer Fest (largest in the world) which I’ve been to and is a good time. I can’t say much about California beers but the Pacific NW is good.

Stability at the top
with a good working relationship makes me a very happy Rangers fan right now. I have a good deal of confidence in the front office as currently constructed, and feel they can handle the window of contending for the playoffs the team is on the cusp of.

I started to post a rant about how, while unbelievable to me, this is just another episode in Hicks’ messed up management style, where he (intentionally or unintentionally) pits top level execs against each other. But what matters is that he’s in the process of being taken out of the equation and these two guys who both seem to be doing really good jobs are making the relationship work now. Hopefully this will continue.

This does not lend to the theory that
This offseason is all JD if he started reporting to Nolan. If Nolan wasn’t on board with all the moves he would have said so. We all know from watching Ryan play he wants to win so I doubt he would let JD hang himself with moves just so he could fire him. If he wanted JD gone he would have done it already.

I'm not so sure the highlighted last sentence rings true:
The tension between the Ryan and Daniels camps for the first two years, however, was palpable and something both sides now freely admit they could feel. There was talk of Ryan bringing in “his people.” The split in the organization was obvious to everyone.
Personally,
I think a lot of the “tension” between the two had to do with how This Thing had been run into the ground from 2005-2008. Winning is the great deoderant.
As for RG “wild speculation”…I’d wait until the ownership changeover is complete and also let the season play out for a while before definitively saying RG was wrong.

I may have to try it next time I’m down in BCS, whenever the hell that is. I never really ate out much when I was down there. I pretty much lived off of ramen and grilled cheese sandwhiches.
Barbecue, it's at the corner of Old College Road and S. College Ave (across from the Chicken Oil Co.)
The meat is good but the sides are what makes the place. It’s like some of the famous West Texas barbecue restaurants where you have an all-you-can-eat buffet of sides: red beans, coleslaw, potato salad, green beans, new potatoes, stewed okra and tomatoes, and most importantly, a homemade creamed corn that cannot be described with words alone. And of course, all the homemade bread and cornbread you can eat.

I love okra as much as anyone
but the slime is a little off-putting (cure it in salt first), and if you’re working with it raw, the little hairs will really irritate your skin (wear gloves when cleaning and chopping). Use these hints and okra will always be your friend.
Delicious and grows like a weed here in North Texas.

Seems to me
that, according to this article, Nolan was relegated to the biz side those first two years. I say that was the best thing Hicks could have done. He shouldn’t be beaten up for that. He should be celebrated. Hicks actually protected his guy. I’d even go so far as to suggest that Hicks eased Nolan in. The last thing we needed was Nolan coming in and needing to “put his stamp” on the baseball side. At least not then. All for it now.
Yeah. That's how I took it.
If Nolan had aspirations of improving the baseball side, then that might have caused tension. IIRC, when Nolan was brought in, it was openly stated he was entirely running the business side.
Pro baseball has always been a dream, so this is pretty freakin’ cool out here. -- Tim Steggall, undrafted Rangers minor leaguer.
"Putting his stamp" on the baseball side is a valid concern with any new high-level exec in a baseball front office
But knowing what I know about Nolan, I don’t think he’s the kind of guy to do that sort of thing. He’s a baseball great, but he’s also a wise man and has been a successful businessman for decades. He’s not the kind of guy to go half-cocked into the baseball operations and start changing things up simply because he has the power to do so.

my philosophy
is that the ass is the hardest thing to have all by itself. A great ass typically goes with nice body. You can have a huge rack with nothing else good to go along with it.
Never thought about it that way, but that's an excellent point

Nice
Tech Law School has a picture board with every student and their class on the website where we access outlines, course info, etc. We always called it the “stalker board.” Great way to scope out the incoming class and whether any hotties are in the bunch.
Unfortunately with over 8,000 freshmen, a book like Baylor’s would probably be impractical at A&M.

The market wasn’t overly friendly to my class (I know lots who were deferred, no offered on clerkships, or even had offers rescinded) but it definitely hit you guys harder. I’m sure SMU was the same, but the current 2L class at Tech has had an absolute nightmare trying to find clerkships.
One would think you’re in better shape in Dallas than most, coming from SMU. I’d hate to be from a lesser school trying to break into the Dallas market right now

Dallas is where my wife and I want to be, so I hope that you’re right about being in a better position.

Yeah, the no-offers I can think of came from big firms
One of those was Winstead, they slashed their offers to the bare minimum, and I read on Above The Law the other day that they had 11 new associates scheduled to start Feb 1. Two of those had their offers rescinded Jan 27.
I sure hope those two got in trouble or did something to merit getting the offer pulled and it wasn’t firm profit-related. Because that would have been terrible.

It probably was, though I have no evidence for that supposition.
A good friend/mentor of mine is an attorney at Baker Botts here in Dallas. I remember him calling me the day of the BB Decimation. A lot of good attorneys lost their jobs that day.
That’s actually what is making things so difficult for new hires, the number of great laterals to be had.

Thankfully our firm hasn't had massive layoffs
but the fact that the local job market has dried up gives the management a lot of power in dictating the current terms of employment. It used to be a fairly liquid market and if you didn’t like your pay/bonus/perks, you could move to another firm that was chomping at the bit to have you. Those days are gone for now…

Gracchus (about Obama): I think he knows what America is. America is the mob. Conjure money for them and they'll be distracted. Take away their freedom and still they'll roar. The beating heart of America is not the paper of the Constitution, it's the power of the media. He'll bring them debt - and they will love him for it.
