umm
blacks from south and central america are also african american. they are mostly descended from slaves as well. oh…you mean black no longer a skin color, it’s used to describe african US americans? ok
i guess blacks in central and south americans have it easier as well. because there is no racism in latin counties.
as far as them making less than “black” players…once they hit free agency they make just as much if not more. if you are better than player “A” then you don’t have to worry about anything.
Um
How about the fact that black players make less in the draft then the fake black players who get bonuses at 16?
Nothing about his money scenario is correct
Or the fact that not enough "real" black players are interested in baseball at a young age
Hence the whole MLB push to bring back baseball to the inner cities.

I really don’t like to talk about politics here if I can.
You do this every time
You make what you think is a casual reference to politics and someone inevitably responds to only the political part of your comment and we have the “unexpected” political discussion. Do you realize how many times that has happened because of you?
this wasn't political
the controversial statement is more political.
yes i mentioned a politician. but that politician is also the president and fits into the discussion. the president is a political figure, but the office transcends (or is supposed to) politics. had i mentioned health care, war, taxes etc… i would see your point. but i didn’t. you are the one that is politicizing it. i haven’t had a political “discussion” in a long long long time. look it my post history and prove me wrong (do i REALLY “do it everytime”?). at least i haven’t started one in probably several months. you probably have me confused with somebody else.
i will leave it at that.

Don't people already do that?
I have heard a similar argument with what Torii Hunter is making when it is applied to basketball that there are no “white” players. For example, one person will bring up Dirk Nowitzki and the other person will say that he isn’t “white” but rather he is German.
by GregoryM on Mar 10, 2010 11:07 AM CST up reply actions
I've never heard someone not consider Dirk white
but there has been much discussion over the last few years about the lack of American-born white players in the NBA.
by Anonymous New Guy on Mar 10, 2010 1:03 PM CST up reply actions
I see it when people claim that NBA GMs are biased...
I was watching a college basketball game on ESPN 360 and ESPN had a halftime segment with some white PG who played at Notre Dame a few years ago who was claiming that he wasn’t in the NBA because he was white and from the US. For the numbers and graphs and such they used in the segment, players were split into three categories: black, white, and “European.” And from there they went on to talk about stuff like how few white American NBA All Star starters there have been recently (nevermind that that’s voted on by fans, not GMs).
I didn’t buy the guy’s claims at all. He said if he had entered the draft as a European player with an identical skill set he would’ve been drafted higher. Possibly, but is European guys being drafted higher the result of bias or is it a result of them tending to be younger than 4-year college guys, and scouts having seen less of them? Cause both of those things make them higher risk-reward guys, and I don’t think it’s surprising when a younger guy is drafted ahead of a 4-year college player who’s seen as probably nearer his ceiling.
It was particularly ridiculous considering that Steve Nash—born in Canada, played at a college program in the US—was in the “European” category instead of the “white” category.

Maybe I'm naive but in this era
of trying to exploit as many market inefficiencies as a FO can, I can’t imagine that anybody looks at the color of skin or worries about somebody being from the DR or being black.
What they (MLB FO’s) are doing now is what they should have doing 60 years ago…they’re giving the best players opportunities regardless of their skin color. The kids from the DR play year-round throughout their childhood which is why they’re the best.
I was at a high school game this week between two pretty good teams from areas that are known melting pots (lots of blacks, hispanics, whites and others).
There were two black kids playing in the game.
For whatever reason (not that they can’t play because the two I saw were two of the better kids on the field) and it’s not prejudice, you just don’t see that many black kids playing the Great Game.
It sucks but it is just the way it is.

Some kids can pull off the football/baseball combo in high school but it's not easy.
Select baseball starts to get really serious (75+ games per year) by the time they’re 10 years old. So much of learning to play baseball at the higher levels as you get older is that you need to know how to handle failure which ends up tripping most kids and sends them back to football.
It’s hard to accurately describe the level of play for 12, 13, 14 year olds these days but it’s simply amazing. The quality is so much higher than it was 20-30 years ago.
I don’t know how much of a factor economics play in this but I imagine it’s fairly significant. It also probably seems easier for inner-city kids to get full ride playing hoops or football than baseball.

"Dying ain't hard. It’s living in the wake of a thorough public humiliation that’s hard.--JDT217
And you're right that the whole "select" system has just changed the nature of the sports immensely from how it was in the "old days"
The economics is also important from a facilities standpoint. There are many more places to put a basketball hoop in the inner city than a baseball diamond. And the kids just need one ball between them to play, not balls, bats, and a glover for everyone.
"Dying ain't hard. It’s living in the wake of a thorough public humiliation that’s hard.--JDT217
And unless you are truly gifted...
you need your parents to pay for hitting or pitching lessons to go along with what it costs to pay for your select team, your $ 300 bat and what it costs to travel as well.

Exactly
I was going to say at best, you may get 50% if you are a stud. You are still paying 50% out of pocket.
Agree on select baseball. Those kids go from Memorial Day to Labor Day playing almost everyday of the summer. If you aren’t fully committed to playing baseball, you will get weeded out in a hurry.
Sadly, the economics of it is because of the high number of people who have figured out they can make a pretty penny exploiting kids and their want or need to get a scholarship. While they might say they are in it for the kids, they are also in it for the money. I knew a guy who didn’t coach H.S. baseball because he could make twice as much running his own select team instead of getting the coaching stipend.

This is the baseball schedule during the year for a 12 year old who plays
select baseball and football/basketball for his middle school.
Baseball gets going in mid-August and goes thru the first week of November (teams usually get in 25-30 games depending on the weather). Typically, by January 10 the kid’s baseball team starts working out and getting ready for the season which will begin in late February and go thru late July. Those seasons usually last 70-75 games. Yes, I know they’re 12 years old. So you get a month off in the summer (mid July to mid August) and two months off in the winter. That’s what you do if you wanna stay up with the best players in the area.
Middle school football gets going at Labor Day and goes thru November 12 or so.
Middle school basketball starts a week later and goes to the end of February.
Not too much downtime but that’s the way it is.

If you scout the right parts of town, you can find tons of kids willing to pony up any amount of money to play on a “select” team.
The other scam is to have multiple teams under your little team name. They might say come play for my team, but you might be on the 4th best team taht guy runs in that age group.

Torii Hunter to think you’re a racist, then yes.

Maybe it's me
However, I’m not terribly concerned with Torii Hunter’s view as it reflects of himself. I’m not ready to call Hunter an overt racist; I actually believe it might not be fully his fault. Torii and other US-born black athletes are being told they are being oppressed their entire lives. That seed has already been planted. I’m not surprised an idea such as this, that latinos are not black and are imposters, can be generated by an organization such as the NAACP and pushed upon the US-born black athletes of today. As Craig Calcaterra pointed out, CC Sabathia made a similar comment last year. It has to be hard for them to see the evidence and hear the arguments, factual or not, and not begin to believe in it.
I’m more concerned with the comments about money. That Hunter doesn’t understand that US-born black athletes are in a less favorable position financially than foreign-born players is surprising. He clearly is very out of touch with today’s baseball economics.
I don't know about this being an idea that's being "pushed"
I’d think if there was a somewhat-concerted effort to convince US-born black baseball players they were oppressed, then one of the first things they’d be made aware of was the money situation w.r.t. the draft vs foreign players. So I’d guess that this is something he arrived at mostly on his own.
Article
Read this article by Craig Calcaterra
This is a great take on the situation. Calcaterra also mentions Sabathia saying nearly the same thing a year ago. I’m not saying it is without a doubt being pushed, the word pushed might be an overstatement, however it does appear to be plausible.
Yeah, it's definitely plausible,
And conceptually it’s not a big leap to go from “we should try to get more blacks involved in baseball” to “we should have fewer Dominicans taking baseball positions from blacks,” I just think in Hunter’s case, at least, he made that jump on his own, based on his money comments.
I know that if I were a top-level American-born baseball player I’d be pretty annoyed at having to go through the draft when foreign players don’t, since it probably would’ve cost me a nice chunk of guaranteed money, not to mention more control over which team I ended up with.
I think the “people assume that they’re black” angle is interesting, although I don’t think there’s really much to it. The terminology gets pretty confusing (personally, I’d consider Vlad to be black but not African American), but I think I know what Sabathia and Hunter meant. And I don’t agree that there’s any sort of underhandness or bias that goes into trying to “replace” black American players with players from Latin America, but I can see how/why they’d come to that conclusion. People have a hard time keeping correlation and causation separate, and also don’t really get the finer points of statistics (e.g., that “expected value” doesn’t quite mean “the value you should get.”) You hear simlar things to the Sabathia/Hunter quotes from white American basketball players (though I don’t think I’ve heard it from actual NBA players, just those who didn’t make it and are bitter and think they would’ve had a better shot it if they were from Europe or somewhere), and I don’t buy it there either.
i wonder
1) how prevalent the first name of “Vladimir” is among African-Americans (i would assume even less than among Dominicans)
2) how prevalent the last name of “Guerrero” is among African Americans vs among Dominicans.
obviously im many situations you cant go off of the last name but when you consider baseball i would assume seeing the name “Vladimir Guerrero” one would automatically think “hey, this guy is probably Hispanic and from the Caribbean!” as opposed to “hey, this guy is probably black and from the south side of Chicago!”
and 3) i wonder if anyone actually even asked him that question…

He must just miss Chone Figgins.
That or he’s been hanging around Milton Bradley too much during the offseason…
Didn't Hunter makes some statement a few years ago
about everyone (white players included) wearing the 42 jersey in honor of Jackie, and how only black players should be allowed to do that?
(Wife) "So what do you want to watch on the T.V.? UFC or porn?"
(Husband) "Hmm... well, porn, I guess."
that may have been the CC quote
cant remember

I like Torii Hunter
And I respect his position that he would like to see the share of African Americans increase, but this was the wrong way to frame it. It’s more or less analogous to people who claim that immigrants are taking their jobs in this country. It’s just not the case. The fact that Vad and other dark-skinned Latin guys played for the Angels had no impact on the huge contract that he got from them, nor on the huge contract that Gary Matthews Jr. got from them. I just think this is a really weak argument, in addition to the offensive nature of it.
Not mediocre. Right about average
Sounds like Torii also thinks latin players can't sign their names as well as black players

Can he even call himself an African-American?
Was he actually born in Africa and immigrated over here? I don’t call myself an English-American or a French-American, I think it’s time the African-American moniker is dropped and we just refer to everyone born here as American.

i think it would help to quell racism
we still use monikers to distinguish race, i think if everyone was simply American, then it would start mattering less what color they were

in part i agree with this
at least the
“we just refer to everyone born here as American.”part
but thats how i have felt for a long time. if you live and were born in american, your american. who gives a good damn what should come before american (unless your legit native american that is…lol)

This just in!
Torii Hunter is upset with the way he’s portrayed in the article.
From the link:
“I’m not apologizing because I didn’t say anything like that,” Hunter said before Wednesday’s exhibition game against Cincinnati. “I’m [ticked] right now. I’m upset. And people wonder why athletes don’t talk to the media that much. It’s stupid.”
ya know
if it was one sentence in an article on some blog, that may be different.
but its not. its on NBc sports. and its not by some schmuck who no one has heard of ever before its by craig calcaterra…
im interested to see the rest of the article.
also, if he didnt say anything at all like that, lets hear what he did say…because i tell you what if i said anything that was different than that id sure as hell say what i DID say…

Torri Hunter
Officially the biggest douche on the Angels.
Somebody had to step up and replace John Lackey, I guess.
