This team

Has a maddening habit of playing down to the competition and keeping games interesting… but they always pull it out. Tonight is a perfect microcosm of that… down 18 to an awful team, but now they’re back in front by 6 and should coast to an easy win.
It’s weird for me to say, as a MEGA stats geek, but Hollinger’s system doesn’t apply to this team. Their mentality and nature sort of overrides the methodology of his point-differential equation.

by Conjunction on Mar 10, 2010 9:15 PM CST reply actions

As I recall

The last time the Mavs were inexplicably “too low” on Hollinger’s rankings was the year they were ousted in the first round of the playoffs after winning 67 games.

by MarkInDallas on Mar 11, 2010 11:11 AM CST up reply actions

the mavs could have beaten a lot of teams that year

just not don nelson and a really hot golden state. and they’ve been too low on Hollinger’s rankings every year. Hollinger had them much lower last year as well – didn’t have them as favorites to beat SA

The Mavericks made a terrific trade when they acquired Brendan Haywood, Caron Butler and DeShawn Stevenson from the Wizards. Mark Cuban revealed last night that he thought about all scenarios around the trade deadline, including “tearing down” his team and dealing everyone but Dirk Nowitzki.

“I had to go over every possible scenario (in the shower),” Cuban told The Dallas Morning News. “That’s why I paid for a good water heater.”

I'm rather a fan of Dirk myself.

Went and saw him in Charlotte a few weeks back in REALLY good seats. Like 8 rows up behind the Dallas bench, plus they were fucking free. (My cousin-in-law is a regional buyer for a huge chain of c-stores and so the beer vendors are practically throwing awesome tix like this at him all the time.)

So close to Dirk.

I wanted to glop in my hand and throw it at him to let him now how I felt, but I thought that might’ve been too much.

Instead I just shouted Ich Bin Ein Dirk Nowitzki!!! every time he did something.

BTW, Bobcats fans are THE WORST. They mailed it in harder than I’ve ever seen fans mail it in in my life. Arrive late, leave early, talk on you cell phone the whole time. Suckass sucksters barely even cheered when it was looking like the Cats might be able to pull it off near the end.

An answer to Hollinger

I don’t check the site much but 82games.com I noticed has updated stats for 2009-2010. The best thing they have is the 5 man unit numbers. Look at Dallas’ 5 man units.

They don’t have the sortable stats for the league up yet but just looking at the usual suspects, that Haywood-Marion-Dirk-Butler-Kidd lineup seems to be the best in the west. The caveat is that that team hasn’t played a lot of great competition but still. There are a couple of CLE and ORL lineups that blow that Mavs lineup out of the water so it’s not like I’m saying the Mavs are the best in the league or anything. (Interestingly enough, it looks like CLE plays a lot of bad lineups a lot more often because they prefer O’Neal over Ilgauskas, generally. ORL is stacked top to bottom).

But this is a very simple answer to Hollinger analysis that looks at point differential in a vaccum to predict playoff success. Yes, the Mavs give up points in the middle of the game but in the 4th quarter and more so in the playoffs when teams put their best lineups on the floor, the Mavs have a pretty good one and can put a game away

by ab03 on Mar 12, 2010 12:02 PM CST reply actions

That's good stuff, thanks

I don’t really fault Hollinger for sticking by his formula, but what I don’t like is his attitude of not admitting that there can be explained outliers or flaws. He was on ESPN radio yesterday and basically scoffed at the notion that the post-trade mavs were significantly better than pre-trade.

He is convinced that josh howard was a wash with caron butler

although i’m not sure how he dismisses haywood outright.

by ab03 on Mar 12, 2010 12:46 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah he said that same stuff on the radio

Said it’s shocking to him that so many people consider Butler an upgrade. Laughable. He completely ignored Haywood like you said.

Then he said the Bucks getting Salmons and the Cavs getting Jamison were better trade-deadline moves.

Another thing that bugs me about his discounting of the win streak is he says it’s not that impressive point-differential wise against weak competitions. But, that doesn’t factor in that Damp has been out basically the entire run. Caron sat out vs the Lakers and they still won. Terry has now been out a while. Kidd sat a game too. I mean, they’ve been winning games with Barea and Najera getting major minutes.

by Dirk Diggler on Mar 12, 2010 1:19 PM CST up reply actions

His latest article basically says

that he would take every team ahead of the mavs in a 7 game series against the Mavs except the Spurs and Celtics. I kind of want the Blazers matchup just so the Mavs can disprove him early. Here’s what Hollinger says:

Would I take Dallas to beat them in a series?
No. Not even with home-court advantage, which could prove interesting because they may face each other as the No. 2 and No. 7 seeds in the West. Portland beat the Mavs twice in Dallas already, once without Brandon Roy and twice with Juwan Howard manning the middle. The Blazers arguably also made more impactful deadline additions than the Mavs by trading for Marcus Camby and bringing Nicolas Batum back from injury. The state of Roy’s hamstring is a lingering worry, but that would be the only reason to shift my choice to Dallas. The two sides will meet in Portland on March 25 and again on April 9.

Mind you, he discounts a Mavs win against Denver because it was only a 1 point win but is counting a Blazers win of 4 points and an OT win of 1 point. Fine. But does he really think a Blazers lineup can hang with the Mavs?

by ab03 on Mar 12, 2010 12:45 PM CST up reply actions

hmm

I guess I don’t even need to wait for a playoff matchup. We can see what happens in Portland in a few weeks

by ab03 on Mar 12, 2010 12:47 PM CST up reply actions

The fact that he would take the Bucks in a 7-game series at a neutral site...

citing the Bucks rejuvenation since the deadline, is all I know need to know. It’s just silly. I just hope we make this blow up in his face.
