Thursday a.m. Rangers things
Another loss for the Rangers yesterday, and Evan Grant has a game report up at the DMN blog.
Jesse Sanchez has a story about C.J. Wilson's outing yesterday, with Ron Washington saying Wilson did a good job as he vies for a spot in the Opening Day rotation.
Ben Rogers thinks that it is now a two man competition for the 5th starter job, with Wilson battling Matt Harrison to see he gets the job. I still believe that Brandon McCarthy will open the season in the rotation, rather than Wilson or Harrison.
Anthony Andro has a Q&A with Chuck Greenberg, who responds to reports about problems and delays in the sales process by saying that everything is going "smoothly."
Andro also has an update on Eric Hurley's progress, as he works to return from rotator cuff surgery, and Jarrod Saltalamacchia's status.

Sale issues
This all just sounds like posturing, hemming and hawing to me. The sale will get done. It might not get done by opening day, but it will get done.

Actually, I think the most significant thing about these potential delays
is that it might inhibit the team’s ability to add payroll with a trade acquisition if it goes on long enough. Even if the sale goes through on opening day I don’t imagine the coffers would be immediately open. Best case scenario is for the sale to close by about opening day, and for the team to get off to a hot start to help attendance and cash flow.

OT - Something to feel good about.
Baseball Musings last year projected the Rangers to score 767 runs the year after they scored 901 runs (Rangers scored 784 runs) so I give them some credit.
This year they project the Rangers to score 867 runs. I like that and it makes me feel better about this year.

Saw that yesterday, got a lukewarm fuzzy
Like the win total projections, this just says that if each player meets his most probable mark, the offense is much better than last year. 2009 was an outlier for the offense in many ways, and was probably pretty nearly a best case scenario for run prevention with the talent on hand.
The offense should almost certainly be better this year, not sure about the run prevention.

I still think this
is one of the least projectable teams that I recall. Due to injury, youth, or other factors, there is a good 1/3 of the team I have no feel for how they will do.

I think it all comes down to the production they get out of 1B.
You can live with poor offense in the AL at SS & C if everybody else is at or above average.

And how is that different from his entire career?
We need to not always make hard work out of sex- Rick Carlisle.
That is not different when comparing that to his career
However, IIRC hitters who lack professional hitting skills such as pitch selection, pitch recognition, etc. tend to not age very well.
Vlad has been good enough that I can reasonably expect him to continue performing, however I have an elevated level of concern.
I'm the opposite
I think Vladdy’s gonna be healthy and perform well. He swings at everything – this board better get used to it.
that approach has produced some of the most maddening home runs i can remember being hit off Ranger pitchers

If he's healthy, I don't care if he swings at everything.
So much of what he does depends on bat speed, so as long as he can turn on everything, I don’t care if he rarely takes a pitch.
And we haven't heard anything negative about Vlad's bat speed so far
Of course, that may be because writers are terrified of Vlad, and with good reason

The season will take a bit of a toll on him. Hopefully he gets plenty of rest to keep him going. And by rest I mean not playing him in the OF #listentowhatIsayRonWashington
Right
You have to assume he’s all the way back from the torn pectoral… I think the biggest enemy of his bat speed is age (and with that, an increased risk of injury and decline) at this point.

Why in god's name
would you expect him to change his approach at this point in his career? Especially on this team full of free swingers.
"I don't condone steroids or any other type of growth hormones or anything else, but I could care less, and, for the most part, I don't think the fans give a (bleep). The people that care about it are the people that probably don't like baseball," - Jim Leyland
What are you and were you expecting from him?
Replacement level? Average? All-Star-caliber? Somewhere between one of those?
Expectations
I won’t speak on that general of terms.
My expectations going in were that his numbers would improve on what he put up last year. I figured this year he would be healthier and be able to improve on last year’s “down year”.
I’m starting to feel like those expectations might be a little lofty and perhaps even putting up last year’s number isn’t as likely as I thought it was.
Last year saw a significant drop-off in performance, from .886 OPS to .794 OPS, seeing a signficant reduction in OBP and SLG. I was hoping he’d get back into the mid-.800’s again, hopefully with at least a .350 OBP which he’d basically done his ENTIRE career up until last season. Now I’m not so confident.
Hm.
I feel like that was a little more general than what you didn’t answer, but okay. I don’t think him improving is a stretch at all.
Improvement
What are the reasons you can see improvement?
He’s an aging hitter with bad knees who has had significant declines in performance the last two years. People who have bad plate discipline tend to not age well. Vlad is not showing any adjustments from his previous approach and fits the bill as an aging, oft-injured declining player. This year’s spring training approach, thus-far, isn’t showing me anything that suggests he’s going to improve. Thus, my concern.
Improving over last year's totals?
Well, here are two big reasons: 1) projections (admittedly, Vlad is unique) and 2) how well he played after he got healthy last year.
Of course he doesn’t have a skill set that ages well. It’s not like I’m seeing him as any more than like a .370 wOBA/2 WAR player at best. I’ll take more like .350-60 with around 500 plate appearances and a 1-1.5 WAR.
That’s still an improvement over last year, though.
Our LF's in 2009
went 28/89 with an .806 OPS last year.
I’m not worried about that happening this year between Hamilton & Murphy.

Hamilton, Vladdy
Salty, CD, Big Dick Harden, Cruz, McCarthy, Lewis, Holland, …
I just don’t have a good feel for how any of them do. I could see any of the names I listed having career years, and I can see any of them falling flat on their face. Between the injury prone on this team and the youth on this team, it just doesn’t seem all that projectable.
I’d be unsurprised to see first or last place from this team

Hamilton will be fine, if healthy. So will Cruz.
Vlad scares me because he was a franchise icon to the Angels (maybe their 2nd most important player ever), they’re a big market team, they replaced him with a player (Matsui) who is older and has been hurt a lot recently. Nobody knows Vlad better than the Halos and they not only let him walk, but they let him walk to a team they’re competing with in the division.
Salty just flat-out sucks as a hitter and needs to be platooned.
CD is useless until he starts taking walks.

Re-signing Vlad
would have cost more than signing Matsui, so it’s not a straight comparison. If you’ve got a guy like Vladdy on your team you can’t just offer him a token contract. Or, you could, but then he’d just decline and leave anyway.

I agree they let him walk
I just don’t agree with the reason why. No question that Vlad is on the steep backside of his career. However, it is apparent by the way he ended last year that he can still hit. With Abreu and Hunter, the lineup would be way too old. Also, using JW’s “logic,” Figgins must be done too.

I agree completly with that. The only thing that keeps me tilted to the positive side
is the fact that we have decent backup plans for pretty much every name on that list. The only exception where we don’t have a nice neat plan if failure strikes is catcher. 1B could be one, but I think Smoak is a quality back up plan.
Somehow I feel the pitching can find a way, even if Harden, Holland, Lewis, B-Mac don’t work out. And the odds of all of them sucking is pretty low right? The only other place where an injury would cause a significant drop off would be to Elvis or Ian. If we lost either of those two for longer then a month, we would be hosed with who ever they bring in to help.
All in all I’m with you on the first or last scenarios, but my lean is closer to second.

Hamilton or Cruz would be Murphy and Moreland.
A step down for sure, but not huge. There’s also Gentry.
For Vlad you also have Smoak who can DH. Smoak would also be the Young back up, with CD over to thrid and Smoak at first.
Again, only decent backup plans for worst case scenarios. We have a pretty deep pitching farm that could net us a replacement OF if needed as well.
"grilled cheese punches like a bitch" -Gdawg
"i feel like k-rod after a save." -by reagan on Jan 23, 2010, that glorious day Hicks was out of our lives.
You *are* optimistic.
I can see the argument that the Rangers have some promising prospects who could, in best-case scenarios, keep them in contention if a big-league fixture gets hurt (or sucks) for an extended amount of time ~ but I actually think that positional depth is a big issue this season. In any event, the uncertainty surrounding all of the backups you list doesn’t really seem to increase the team’s projectability…
I am usually an optimist, I'll concede wholeheartedly. But think about it.
We have a100% quality 4th outfielder. We have a sexy ass bat down in AAA just waiting to come up and either DH or 1B it for us. And to AJM, I think Moreland would be a pretty big step down for Cruz, but I think he’ll be close for Hamilton. 100% Hamilton is >>>>>>>>> 100% Moreland, but I think we can all agree that Hamilton being 100% would be a huge surprise. So I think overall Moreland’s numbers could compare to an in and out Hamilton.
I wasn’t making a case for projecting the Rangers to be easier to project. Quite the opposite, I was agreeing with Cahill about having no idea what to expect from this team or where to put them. They could be 68 game winners or 98 game winners. My point was that I lean more towards the higher end a bit because of the better quality depth that the Rangers have.
Finally, I think you’re right about the position players being our biggest weakness right now. But I am reasonably realistic that we have the pitching and farm depth to help out if we need a position player. Teams always seem to be wanting pitching at the trade deadline, not hitters. We would be in a nice position come July if we did need a bat or position player.
"grilled cheese punches like a bitch" -Gdawg
"i feel like k-rod after a save." -by reagan on Jan 23, 2010, that glorious day Hicks was out of our lives.
68? I find that hard to believe
You’d have to have injuries to Harden, Hamilton, Young, Kinsler, Cruz, McCarthy (given), Frank^2, Salty, Vlad, and at least one more guy who wasn’t hurt last year. You’d have to have an implosion by Davis, and ineffectiveness by Feldman, Holland, Elvis, and Borbon. And it would all have to happen early enough for the team to believe that its out of it, fire Wash, and go into the trade deadline as sellers, and sell off Hamilton, Young, Harden, Feldman, Vlad, Cruz, etc….. (though Young is probably still untradeable.)
Oh my god! What can it be? We're all doomed! Who's flying this thing?
-Wash
I find 68 about as easy to hit as 98 though.
I’m just saying, that would be the far extreme of spectrums. I give 68 and 98 about a 1 percent chance of happening, but it could with the volatility of this team.

I don't think much about stats when actually watching the games,
At least not any more than “we need to get a run here; fortunately, we’ve got some good hitters coming up,” but without stats there’d be a whole lot less to talk about between games/seasons…
And honestly, a lot of formulas for “traditional” stats are pretty arcane themselves. People are just familiar with them and used to them. For instance, think about the types of plate appearances that are left out of batting average and on base percentage because whoever came up with them decided the stats would be better that way.

Also, everything else you said.
It will not all come down to one position.
The division may come down to that, but not the W/L totals by any large degree. I seriously doubt Smoak/Davis can amount for more than about a five win differential, at most. More likely a game or two (somewhere between replacement-level and average).
Good stuff Josey, thanks for posting that

I actually mentioned this back when Kinsler talked about the line up on the radio.
Washington pretty much nails the lineup. The LAT agrees with him on slots one, five eight and nine, and uses the same players in 2-3-4 and 6-7, just shifted.
I was impressed that Wash’s proposed line-up made sense from a couple different angles. I would probably like Kins a spot lower so he could steal bases in front of the weaker hitters, but that’s it.

might also depend on how Feliz pitches the
rest of ST. If his secondary pitches don’t come around they may opt to send him to AAA and put BMac in the pen.
Vladimir Guererro - 2010 AL MVP
Some Keith Law snippets from yesterday's game
On Feliz:
…He threw a few of the best curveballs I’ve ever seen from him, and while it was inconsistent, it’s reassuring to see that he has the ability to snap off a breaking ball like the best ones he showed on Wednesday, with tight rotation and very late downward break. Feliz deserved a better fate in this game;…
On Ogando:
The Texas Rangers waited five years for right-hander Alexi Ogando to receive a valid work visa that would allow him to resume his minor-league career — and now I can see why. Right-handers who throw 93-96 with a chance for two above-average secondary pitches are worth that kind of wait… …given his age and stuff he could move quickly through the system if his command matches his years rather than his experience.
Moreland:
…He showed good plate coverage on Wednesday and made a key adjustment from his first at bat against a left-handed pitcher to his second one. He may just be a valuable trade piece for Texas this summer when they’re fighting for the division title.

It's nice..
To have too many quality pitchers trying to make the rotation. It’s seems like a good problem to have. The same goes for having to find playing time for a bunch of good young players. It’s a good day to be a Rangers fan.

Who has done more to earn that fifth spot than Harrison?
He’s rehabbed like a sumbitch, gotten in great shape, putting up mid-90’s stuff
Obviously, Feliz and CJ have been erratic and B-Mac’s been unimpressive (and he’s sitting there with an option…) Does Harry have options remaining too? I just think he’s shown the most so far this year

Harrison has options and doesn't need to go through waivers
If you are talking about who has earned it, then it is clearly BMac
If you are talking about seniority, then it is clearly BMac
The only case you could make for Harrison is that he just might be the better pitcher, which is still a good case. But all that “great shape, sumbitch” stuff doesn’t favor BMac at all. And he hasn’t been unimpressive.

How I love that sidearming fool. Plus, the first time he came into a game and introduced himself to the infielders is one of my all time favorite moments from last year
Yes, when we look back at this Rangers dynasty a few years down the road, we should remember that joyous moment
Our sidearming middle reliever, so integral to the team’s success for many years, shows up in the middle of extra innings to the ballpark, gets summoned to the mound, introduces himself to the infielders, and proceeds to give up the game-winning hit while wearing someone else’s jersey.
You can’t make that up.

You just can’t put any sort of number on this team. Way too many questions.
ST thus far has left me feeling a bit pessimistic. Knee-jerk?
with the initially negative reports of Harden
the dings players have already gotten, and the poor offensive showing thus far, you’ve got reason to be concerned. Looooong way to go, though.
"Drinks are on me if Lewis posts >168IP and an era lower than 3.86." by RangerMad on Jan 20, 2010 12:36 PM PST
I may be an optimist
but I really like some of the revelations so far. I think there is a pretty good chance we field a legit, five deep rotation coming out of the gate. So far, all of Harden, Feldman, Lewis, Hunter and Harrison have looked good. In the bullpen, we’ve seen the Grooms of Doom, along with Ray , Oliver and Scheppers, look strong in their debuts, so we could actually have a really great pitching staff this year.
On the offensive side, we all know there are question marks. But everyone seems healthy and focused. If anything, because of the pitchers, I’ve seen my expectations tick up a bit during these first few weeks.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
I'm liking this team's attitude
Not just the “We’re going to win this season” attitude, but guys like Kinsler and Hamilton really seem to get what their problems were last season and what they need to do to fix them. If they can work out the kinks now during ST, watch out for them this season.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

This is part of a running series on Deadspin where Leitch writes a short column about each MLB team.
This article is mostly fluff, focusing mostly on Mike Maddux and his affect on the pitching staff. It has this little nest egg in it too.
Whatever it is: Mike Maddux, no longer Roger Clinton, has it figured out. It makes Texas a more dangerous team, and considerably more fun to watch. /blockquote>
No substance, but entertaining.
I particularly liked his speculation as to what pitching coaches say to the player:
Feelin’ good out there? Yep. Can you get this guy? Yep. All right. Don’t walk him. Throw strikes. Got it.
by FuturePants on Mar 11, 2010 10:59 AM CST up reply actions
I dunno, I found this insightful:
Maybe the job of pitching coach is such a fungible, mercurial one that someone who shows up and treats it like an actual job, with charts and graphs and tendencies and scary Excel documents, really can make a difference.

I particularly enjoyed this line:
I enjoyed the lazy trope that the Rangers’ pitching improvements last season were due to team president (and Ron Paul supporter) Nolan Ryan, as if Scott Feldman said, “Well, that scary guy who shows up in cowboy boots every couple of weeks used to throw 300 innings a year, so I guess I’ll try for 189. Time to stop being such a puss.” Maddux — and of course the dramatically improved defense — was the maestro of the Rangers’ pitching resurgence.
Pretty good summation of my feelings.
"Don’t want to spend my night waiting in line unless it’s for more beer."
--EssBee, on LoneStarBall, Jan. 21, 2010
Of course, he misses the point that Maddux would not be here but for Nolan
So while Nolan didn’t train the pitchers himself, he still deserves plenty of credit for oversight of the turnaround.
"Dying ain't hard. It’s living in the wake of a thorough public humiliation that’s hard.--JDT217

But the notion that the pitchers performed better because Nolan willed it so is, as Leitch puts it, a “lazy trope.”

It’s impossible to quantify, for sure, and the most serious LSB saberheads will scoff at the notion, but setting higher expectations from above helps. I don’t care whether it’s baseball, high school, your job, or raising your kids, if the people in charge have higher expectations and push those beneath them to achieve, there’s a good chance that it will positively impact the results.

Yes, it's part of the plan
to have young pitchers begin to contribute and take a step forward. It is part of the plan to improve defense, Daniels has been targeting up the middle guys since he got the job.

So nice, he had to post it thrice.
The improved pitching was a very large result of a significantly improved defense and the tutelage of Mike Maddux, in my estimation.
To say that Scott Feldman pitched better because Nolan Ryan was looking over his shoulder is pretty ludicrous.

--EssBee, on LoneStarBall, Jan. 21, 2010
We covered this not too long ago
but it is beyond ludicrous to think the defense alone was responsible for This Thing giving up 227 less runs.
Simply put, we had a new pitching coach (thank you, Nolan), our pitchers were healthier, walked fewer people and our starters went deeper into games which made life easier for the bullpen.
The defense definitely helped but they were better in part because the pitchers in front of them were throwing a lot more strikes.

It was several key factors all coming together that factored into last year
One being Maddux which Nolan gets the majority of the credit for.
Another being Millwoods vesting option which I would imagine JD gets credit for for putting in the contract. Had Millwood not had the incentive of the nice payday I doubt he performs as well as he did.
Another being the emergence of the young guys. Feldman, Hunter, Feliz and to a lesser degree Holland which both Nolan and JD gets credit for. Nolan for the Maddux hire which helped the young guys out I believe and JD because, aside from Feldman, hes the one who drafted or acquired these guys along with other young guys.
