Josh Hamilton (and Vlad) Community Projections Discussion Thread

This is a spot were we can discuss our bitchin' CP's on Hamilton and Vlad since no one did it yesterday.

Also this gives a spot for thedirkatron to give us his projections since he is too good to post in the CP thread.

Need more words so here:

The xiphoid process, also known as the xiphisternum or metasternum, is a small cartilaginous extension to the lower part of the sternum which is usually ossified in the adult human. By age 15 to 29, the xiphoid usually fuses to the body of the sternum with a fibrous joint.

I was rather low on my predictions for these two...

..mainly bc I’ve never been able to temper enthusiasm and this is the year we’re supposed to be putting it together and if we don’t I’ll be crushed, so I’m trying to temper my enthusiasm.

So, that’s where I’m coming from on mine.

I'm bullish on Vlad

and bearish on Josh. I think Vlad has one more big year left in him but Hamilton will continue struggling with minor injuries.

same here

…but I think Hamilton will continue struggling with both minor and less minor injuries.

Just don’t think Hammy will stay healthy. When he does play, he’ll be average at best. Hope I’m wrong, but I think the burden of proof is on the Hammy we saw last year.

Regardless, I’m not really counting on him…and anything we get from him will be a bonus.

A couple interesting notes.

1) In helping me decide my Vlad picks, I looked at A) what he did in the second half last year and B) his CHONE projections. Low and behold, they’re very similar. CHONE expects him to repeat his second half of ‘09 over a whole season. Which was pretty good, btw, but he’ll be at DH so it’s a bit less valuable.

2) In working on the FanGraphs projections for the Rangers, I noticed MY has had exactly 38 2B/3Bs three straight years.

by philkid3 on Mar 11, 2010 12:44 PM CST reply actions

i noticed last night

that MY should become the rangers all-time leader in 2Bs and hits this season.

by reagan on Mar 11, 2010 1:38 PM CST up reply actions

Sweet.

Pretty soon he’ll probably be my choice for all-time shortstop on the team just for playing his whole career here over Toby Harrah.

Andrus will take that from him.

If...

the projections made my ‘Bats and Balls’ on Hamilton are close, then we’re all fucked.

I'm not wishing it on him...

…but I think he’d got a lot to prove. And it didn’t bode very well that he got injured the first day of ST.

But Hammy inpacted very few games last year and we still won 87. If everything else comes together, most notably Davis and Salty, with perhaps Kinsler with better OBP, then I think we’ll be okay. Ironically, I’m just not that worried about the pitching…my God, never thought i’d say that about the Rangers!

by Bats and Balls on Mar 11, 2010 2:51 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Well...

I think the chances of the Rangers doing well hinge much more on Hamilton than any other player right now. I could see CD and Salty struggling again and the Rangers still doing well if Hamilton stays healthy and produces like he can. CD and Salty will be at the bottom of the lineup and Smoak is waiting in the wings at 1B.

The odds of CD, Salty, and Vlad all coming together and producing are far less than Hamilton imo. And I think that’s what it would take for the Rangers to contend if Josh has another year like ‘09. It could happen, but a large part of this teams offense rests on Josh’s shoulders.

I guess I was a little bullish on PAs

But moving him to COF should help the wear and tear and his injuries haven’t all been tweaking of various body parts. He runs into stuff. If he cuts down on that maybe he’s on the field more. As far as how extended drug use affects the body, I’m not an expert but he looks like a huge, strong guy and not some meth-head.

"You promised me, Eckstein, that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I noticed that during the most trying periods of my life, there have only been one set of prints in the sand. Why, when I have needed you most, have you not been there for me?" David Eckstein replied, "Because my little legs had gotten tired, and you were carrying me." And I looked down and saw that I was still carrying David Eckstein.

Then he grounded out weakly to second.

#3 and #4,

if these two can stay healthy all season and actually get over 500 at bats, we should be in contention all year.

I always heard if you did CPR incorrectly,

you could puncture someone’s heart with the xiphoid process.

Vlad will destroy.
Still apprehensive on Hamilton.

This is true.

I make it a point to bring it up to the CPR instructor during re-certification time.

I'm hopeful for Vlad

but I honestly think his biggest contribution to the AL West hunt will be in not batting against Texas.

More stuff about projections.

I’ve been going through doing the FG Fan projections for the Rangers and apparently I’m overly optimistic on a few.

I didn’t think I was that optimistic with Andrus, but apparently my projections for him have him leading the Rangers with a 5.8 WAR. Kinsler at 5.4 seems about right, but Borbon at 5.3 doesn’t. Hamilton at 4.9 is also probably too optimistic, though definitely doable.

The rest I think are pretty realistic.
