I'm not going to pretend to know even 1/4 of these bands, but these are the ones I can definitely recommend:
Drink To Victory is a raucous punk band
Snarky Puppy is a very cool jammy jazzy funky group well worth seeing
Delmore Pilcrow (who'll be going on almost right as I post this) is a folk rock with a touch of country. Cool guys, too
White Drugs is an awesome hard rockin band from LA
AM Ramblers are a very talented group of bluegrassers. Rex the Mandolin player is awesome
The Friday night lineup at Sweetwater is great with Pinebox Seranade, Boxcar Bandits, and Whiskey Folk Rambers, all really rocking, folky, bluegrassy, everything kind of bands.
Matthew and the Arrogant Sea is a very very cool group. I can't really describe them. On their MySpace they call themselves "minimalist folk", but they're experimental and beautiful and haunting. good, good, good
Oso Closo is a progressive rockin', experimental, worldly sounding fun, fun time
Dust Congress is a hipster group that plays a bunch of different instruments while being cooler than you
The Flaming Lips: Enough Said
I really don't know much about the Sunday bands, but "The Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt!" is probably my favorite band name of the weekend.
The Keynote Speaker is Steve Albini, "...the seminal punk musician (Big Black, Shellac), engineer, and writer based in Chicago. Known for his work on The Pixies' Sufer Rosa and Nirvana's In Utero, Albini has prseided over recordings by artists from Jawbreaker to Scott Niblett..." That's Friday during the day at Hailey's.
So, that's all. Hope y'all go see some of the crazy awesome music going on all weekend in Denton!

Thanks for doing this holmes.
I’m gonna plug a band that I dig…but remember I’m 34 all you youngsters.
I’m kinda biased bc I know half of them and they’re UNT Music School grads and they’re HUGE overseas….which may make them uncool, don’t know how that works these days.
The band is Midlake. They are big friends with the Flaming Lips and they’re the reason the Lips are playing this festival.
Anyways, here’s a list of their videos on youtube from their album “Trails of Van Occupanther.” I think each of these songs is boobs but “Young Bride” “Roscoe” and “Bandits” are my faves.
Good Shit. Never seen them live so don’t know what kinda show they’ll put up, but the album is devine…IMO at least.
Whoever goes to this festival I hope y’all have a good ol’ time.
Again, thanks for the reviews…Snarky Puppy sounds right up my alley. PEACE CHICKEN GREASE!

Looks like I might post up Friday night at SW, if I can find a seat.
I’ve heard WFR are pretty good. I think I saw the Boxcar Bandits playing in someone’s livingroom a couple years ago at a hippie houseparty. Anyhow, looks like a pretty fun weekend in ole D-Town.

Props to the founders of the festival. With the help of Midlake and other Denton area connections, year two of NX35 will be a success.
Thanks for the post.
Man this is great,
I consider myself a local, but I hadn’t even heard of this until today’s GDT I haven’t heard of any of these groups, but that’s what makes it so fun. I’ll check out Midlake before the night ends.
How is the drinking of alcohol and such gonna work? Would I be overzealous to think it’s byob?

recordhop is progressive stoner rock with a great guitar and female vocal sounds. think a harder version of queens of the stone age with cat power singing. original, rocking sound

That's a lot of bands I've never heard of
What about Hair Pin Curve and Baptist Generals? I’m surprised neither are playing.
jam0152 pretty much laid out the bands and the days,
but also found this, breaks down which venues each band is playing
Lips/Midlake

Actually, I added nothing with this last post,
I just noticed the venues were listed up top.

Bands To Check Out
I recommend:
Robert Gomez
Neon Indian
The Middle East
The Walkmen
Too bad three of the four are playing on Sunday at different venues.
Serenity now, insanity later.
-Lloyd Braun
Love me some Walkmen
Never seen them live though, unfortunately. Very unfortunately. I named You & Me to my top 10 two years ago. Fantastic stuff.
Favorites from last night:
Jacob Metcalf is a big band of 7 or 8 with a bunch of strings and happy songs. In the vein of The Elected and Arcade Fire. Really good sound
Carrie Rodriguez is this badass chick who wails on the fiddle and sings. Super hot. The music is actually a little bit too new country for me, but she is definitely worth seeing if you can sometime.

So...went snooping around the fairgrounds earlier.
The stage will be on the far West side of the fairgrounds. The entrance that is in between the Athletic goods shop and the thrift store will be right by the Stage (which they were just putting together this AM)
The entrance on Carroll (behind the Kroger) is the furthest entrance from the stage.
Just fyi’in to anyone who needs the info.

I don’t think I know who a single one of those bands are.

“…It seemed that (Slobberbone) singer Brent Best and company were gone for good after a publicized final gig in 2004 and Best’s formation of The Drams shortly thereafter. After a long wait, Slobberbone is back, but maybe not forever. See ’em while you can.”

If any of you guys get tired of Denton, or it's too far,
come on down for the SXSW in Austin. I’ve been giddy about this ever since I moved here from Midland. Just too much too see, too little time.

SxSW
It’s a huge beating, but at the same time it never fails to deliver. You will have heard of many of the bands who perform, and of those you haven’t if they are good you will hear of them pretty damn soon.
Unlike this thing going on in Denton. I’m not trashing it. I think it’s great they’re doing something. At the same time it’s kind of a shame that in a metro area of 6.3 million people or whatever, Denton has the only thing that resembles a cool music scene, and it’s way out on the fringes of the area. I love Denton. I just wish there was more Rock n Roll in Dallas. There used to be.

Denton may have more local acts...
…but Dallas undoubtedly gets the best acts of any city in the area.
And if you think SXSW is a beating, try one of the 3 day festivals like ACL or Lollapalooza. SXSW is a luxurious cakewalk in comparison with it’s air conditioning, roofs, and seats.

But there is something to be said about spending three days in a field tripping on acid listening to the best bands in the world

Oh yeah
ACL is a true beating. Why do they have that in the middle of the summer? Way too hot. I’ve never been to Lollapalooza. Well, not since it was a touring thing.

They moved to October
because everyone bitched about the heat…and then they got the rain which turned the whole damn into a quagmire of dillo dirt mud.
Purgatory's kind of like the in-betweeny one. You weren't really shit, but you weren't all that great either. Like Tottenham.
oh
When I was there it was always in August, I think. At least people don’t go to the hospital/die because it’s raining.

Actually
there was a breakout of some kind of infection people were getting from wlaking barefoot in the mud…but I hear you. I’ll take my chances with the rain over 104 degrees any day.

Well
If they’d book a death metal band once in a while, this wouldn’t happen.
As anyone who’s watched South Park can tell you, death metal is the bane of every hippie’s existence.
"Jesus, Spanish- our jobs aren't enough, now you want our words?"

oh
And I don’t consider touring acts as part of the local scene. Dallas has the venues for touring bands to play, but there’s no indigenous music here. It fucking sucks.

There are really two good ways to do SXSW w/o a badge
1) Do the work. Research the bands, parties, RSVP’s, and get the most possible out of the music and free beer/food. See the bands you want to see and minimize the time you waste listening to shit music.
2) Just go. Bounce around and play it by ear. Realize that about 60% of what you hear is going to be absolute crap and you’re going to pay (sometimes dearly) for your drinks and food. It’s a lot less stress this way, but it’s also more expensive and less enjoyable as a music fan.
Purgatory's kind of like the in-betweeny one. You weren't really shit, but you weren't all that great either. Like Tottenham.
x
RSVP to everything. Like, double and triple up your RSVPs, because you never know where you will end up.
SXSW badgeless is not a problem, just get to venues early so that you are in the front of the line (if there is one) of badgeless people.
by FuturePants on Mar 12, 2010 12:25 PM CST up reply actions

60% of the time, it works every time

What shows are you trying to see?
Wristband? Badge?
Purgatory's kind of like the in-betweeny one. You weren't really shit, but you weren't all that great either. Like Tottenham.
I have friends coming in to town so we are just going to do what they want.
I told them to give me a list of what they like and I will try and setup some kind of game plan on where to go. The schedule they put up is usually right, but not always. We’re going to go badgeless since they have no idea what they want to see. I’m going to pick out one or two I like, my wife will do the same, but for the most part, we will be floating around listening to crap music with flasks in our pocket. This gets around the cost (we aren’t huge drinkers, so it’s not needed) and we just make sure we eat before we go. After about 8 hours anyway we are ready to go home and try it again the next day.
This trip will be about entertaining the friends coming in and letting them enjoy themselves. They aren’t real music folks (I’m not really either, just enjoy the scene and atmosphere of the place) so crap vs gold isn’t what we’re looking for. Just laid back and finding a joint we enjoy.

Cool
Yea, they’ve been around a lot longer than a lot of people realize. I haven’t gone out and picked up any of their older stuff yet but I do plan to give it a listen.
Manics are another band that have been around for quite a while. They’re a BritPop band that surfaced in the mid 90’s around the same time as Oasis, Blur, Pulp, etc…
Hipsters, Flipsters, and Finger Poppin Daddies! Knock me your lobes.
Also,
As far as 2010 music goes I’m really excited about the new Goldfrapp album coming. I can’t wait to hear the rest, if the rest of the album is anything like ‘Rocket’ then it will probably already go into my top 10 for 2010.

I suppose this is OT,
but just got a flier from the Angelika to check out a free showing of “The Runaways” this Tuesday.

I thought it sounded pretty good until I saw that.
