I can’t believe the words of this guy. Doesn’t he know that if it were not for the greatness of this nation that he would be nothing but street trash. He is an embarassment for everyone that stands for this nation. If he wasn’t a well known actor, walking the streets alone in Venezuela, and claiming his loyalty to Chavez, I don’t think it would take long for him to become roadkill. I will never watch another movie that this man has been in or involved with. He is a perfect example of what trash we have in Hollywood and the idealology that those in Hollywood try to sell to us as a Nation. I honestly believe Sean Penn got to close to the character he played in Fast-times of Ridgemont High. I’m sure he inhaled to get into the character, but to his own benefit he never came down. Sean Penn will never come down to reality. Boycott his movies. Send a message to this arrogant fool.

I don’t think he’s as bad as some of my neocon friends think (one cited the possibility of a Latin Nuke as reason to demonize him). Consolidating power into an executive and removing term limits is a very bad precedent and it doesn’t matter who does it. Oh and while I like Penn’s politics generally, the guy is still a prick. Love the art; hate the artist.

At the end of the day, the true far left wants to consolidate power into the executive branch, as well. They just want it to be economic power, rather than the police/security power that was the focus of the Bush Administration.
That being said, I think that the majority of folks viewed as liberals take a dim view of Chavez. He’s like Castro was in the 70s…a guy that some on the American fringe left lionize, but who is not widely embraced.

It is ironic that power consolidated in the executive by the Rove/Bush Admin will come back to haunt the right, just as it is ironic that liberal hatred of the recent Texas Board of Education actions will lend support to the school voucher/charter schoolers.
If you believe in democracy
you have to recognize that sometimes you will get a guy like Chavez elected, or you will get Hamas elected.
Personally, I don’t think it says much for America’s belief in democracy when we plan assassination or push for regime change of democratically elected leaders like Allende or Chavez.
