Rangers claim Hernan Iribarren on waivers
The Rangers have claimed 25 year old infielder Hernan Iribarren off of waivers from the Milwaukee Brewers.
Irribarren had been designated for assignment by the Brewers, and is out of options. Looking at his minor league records, he apparently plays almost exclusively second base, so he doesn't seem to help the utility infielder situation much.
He was a fairly decently regarded prospect a few years ago, but he hasn't really hit, has very little major league time, and I'm kind of baffled as to why he'd be claimed, since he doesn't seem to provide any help at shortstop. I'm guessing he may be someone they'll try to run through waivers later this spring and outright.
No announcement yet about a move to clear a 40 man roster spot. My assumption is that Omar Poveda will be put on the 60 day d.l. to make room for him.
UPDATE -- Eric Hurley goes to the 60 day d.l.

Can't he play 3B?
Could Young move to SS with Iribarren playing 3B?
I didn't know what a mancrush was. Derek Holland showed me.
Well
I guess, but you could probably have German do that.

Can they put players on the DL now?
I thought they had to wait until about a week before opening day.
Vladimir Guererro - 2010 AL MVP
Not for 60 day DL at least
Jordan Zimmerman for example has been on the DL for a few weeks now.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

So, think they'll outright Poveda off the 40...
…to try and sneak him through waivers at the end of ST?
How is removing him from the 40 a better option than 60 day dl?

My thinking
The odds of him ever contributing to the Major League team for us seem to be pretty slim. Seems like the end of ST would be a more optimal time to try and slip him through, as oppose to when his 60-day stint is up.
Not really
Since it is easy for a team to claim him and stash him on the 60 day d.l. all year.

if the team puts him on the
60 day dl, they have to pay him the major league minimum, it uses an option and he’d earn a year of service time assuming he’d spend the whole year on the 60 day dl.

Right, but how is waiving him a better choice?

How probable do you think it is that Poveda would clear waivers,
even at the end of Spring Training?
I don't know.
I’m sure there are others here who would have a better idea of that.

I'd bet at least one team would claim him,
even if it means paying him and burning the option and service time.
well,
the claiming team doesn’t have to put him on the 60 day dl, but they would be looking at carrying him on their 40 man roster without him pitching this year and probably spending all of 2011 in the minors.

if they have room for him
on the 40 man roster, they would have no reason to put him on the 60 day dl. he would just be on the minor league dl.

OK, I see where you were going with that.
I was figuring that even if the claiming club needed room on its 40 at some point during the season, it could simply pay the price for Poveda ~ which, assuming an organization shy on pitching prospects, doesn’t seem that large a penalty.
Anyhow, doesn’t seem worth the risk for the Rangers.
I don't know how common
it is for teams to put players who’ve never really played above AA on the 60 man dl to make a spot on the 40 man roster. I know the Rangers did it with Diamond in ‘08, but he was a more highly regarded prospect and that didn’t exactly work out anyway.

The Rangers did it with Joaquin Arias a couple of years ago
I don’t think it is that uncommon.

I was more speaking to the volume of players to sort through...
…at end of ST as oppose to any other time during the season.
But of course, I defer to your opinion on this.
I'd like to think MLB clubs
have some sort of automated system that triggers an alert when a prospect like Poveda goes on the waiver wire.
Then I think of Razor Strop and Mad Dog, and I laugh at my own naïve idealism.
ok, I just assumed that it woiuld use an option

No
He’s considered to be in the majors all season if he’s on the 60 day d.l., and thus at no point would he be optioned to the minors.

Meh...
Arias, Duran, Olmedo, Brown, Iribarren. It’s almost like the Rangers are collecting spare IFers who can’t help them at SS.

I'm not saying that anything comes of this move
or that Iribarren is likely a legit MLB player necessarily. But he has been age appropriate all of the way up the ladder, and his career line is .314/.371/.418. That’s not bad for a 2B. He was bad in AAA in 2008 at age 24, but he did bounce back to right at his career averages last year. The fact that he is a left-handed hitter and not a SS doesn’t make him a great fit here, and they are probably just taking a flyer with the likely intent of trying to run him through waivers themselves later on like Adam said, but I wouldn’t rule out the notion that they just think he can be a nice, legitimate utility bench guy, as a 2B/3B/CF/LF type. That does sound a lot like German, but I’m saying maybe they think he’s better (and cheaper).
Just thinking aloud, not really convicted, but I don’t know that “hasn’t really hit” is a totally fair description.
He played
CF for the Cardenales de Lara in the VWL season before last. I don’t remember last season. He was penciled in to play SS before he got claimed so they were going to show him for whoever. His minor league manager, Don Money, was a big fan and liked him as a player.
There are a handful of blog posts if someone wants to go back a few.
SI_JonHeyman best wishes to top #redsox prospect Ryan Westmoreland, who was diagnosed with a cavernous malformation in his brain and is having surgery
Sounds pretty scary
Hope it’s not as serious as it sounds. I’ve never heard of that before.
by Brett Perryman on Mar 13, 2010 6:01 PM CST up reply actions
Unfortunately, if they're operating, it seems likely to be relatively serious.
But at least it’s not cancer, and surgery seems to have a likelihood of preventing severe neurological outcomes. (More.)
who would you rather have
Inglett or Iribarren. They were essentially traded for each other.
I didn't know what a mancrush was. Derek Holland showed me.
For this year, I’d rather have Inglett (assuming Iribarren can’t play SS, and I really don’t think Milwaukee would have let him go if he could). For a chance of actually having an above average bench player at some point, Iribarren.
