Kidding, sort of. But It’s awesome that they’re in the big dance.
I'm hoping for a 13th seed, but that's prolly asking a lot.
24-8 and an RPI right around 100 seems like it should be good enough to at least get them considered for a 13th.
A 14th would be fine, I suppose. It’s what I’m expecting anyhow. You can sometimes get a beatable opponent in a 3 seed.
A 15th would be a real blow. You don’t get much fluff with 2 seeds.
Last time we were essentially a 16th, as Memphis was far away and the best #2 seed in the tourney and prolly should’ve been a #1.

I think a...
14/3 matchup between them and New Mexico would be really interesting.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
Oklahoma City is scheduled to host a 14/3, and New Orleans is scheduled for a 14/3 and a 15/2.
I have to think they’ll be put in one of those two locales.
The NCAA is supposed to be making a greater effort of late to get teams into regional locations if at all possible, especially for the smaller schools who are likely 1-and-dones.

Yah, not a good matchup at all.
I started to bitch about 15 seed again (sigh…), but it just made so much sense to put us in OKC and that’s all we could’ve been there based on the games they’re gonna host.
It’s such a close venue.
And I guess we’re not really that much more monkey fucked versus K-State than we would be versus Baylor/Pitt/Georgetown/Ohio St. or any of the other likely teams.
I know New Mexico sounded pretty appealing in theory, but in truth they’d prolly kill us too, so… meh.

i've never understood the setup for this tournament
the 4 best teams work hard all year to get the top spot, but if a 10,11,12,13,14, or 15 seed get to the 2nd round the 1 seed still has to play an 8 or 9. Re-seed after each round.

You’d have to have every region have all its games in the same place, rather than splitting them into 4 locales as they do now.

College Basketball is a Joke
The NBA should get rid of the one and done rule. If not CB will remain a joke. I believe that high school kids should have the right to go straight to the NBA if not go to school and commit for 3 years at their respected university.

I like the 3 pointer. I like the dimension it adds to basketball.
But I also agree with you that at the college level it needs to be back further.
It’d spread the floor more and make it so teams wouldn’t be able to just sit back and rely on the 3 to win games, which I agree can be a bit tedious.
I don’t think quite as bad as you make it to be, though.
Sometimes they do, sure, but most college basketball games don’t turn into 3 point chucking contests.

Yah, I understand having it that close for HS... shit, I know I needed the god damn help.
But by the time kids get to college they’re all pretty much men, at least physically.
If they don’t have the strength to shoot from the NBA line it’s a lack of power in their shot, not in their sweet rippling man muscles.

by thedirkatron on Mar 15, 2010 2:41 AM CDT up reply actions
I agree with this almost 100%.
The baseball system would work so much better, imo.
I also think they should allow a JC/Juco exemption like baseball, fwiw.
But I have to wonder if this wouldn’t result in more kids going the Europe route… like let’s say a highly touted PG chooses college out of high school (I think PG is the most likely scenario, as even when HS’ers were allowed to declare, HS PG’s making the decision to come out were few and far between), then tears it the fuck up in the NCAA as a Freshman…. Like, say, John Wall.
What’s to stop him from taking 2yr/7mm or so to go spend the next two year’s playing in Europe?
Shit, I would.
Granted this probably wouldn’t happen all that often (like a few times a decade, max, I’d think), but it could be a problem, especially if the Euroleagues continue to gain popularity.

Baylor's good.
And they’ll be playing in Houston if they make it out of the first two rounds. Very, very good draw for them.
Baylor:
12th in the Pomeroys. Which I don’t think should be an exclusive, or even the most important, tool for determining the tournament field, but it is the best tool I’ve ever seen for picking who will beat who, and there’s been talk that the tournament committee looks at it during their little meetings. And sometimes I look at their selections and seedings and it sure seems like they do.
Anyway, it likes Baylor. A lot.
i think at the worst
baylors goin to the sweet 16 and they’re in a region where they could go to the final 4 (and if they make it to the 2nd weekend they’ll be playing in houston)
of course ive been a big fan touting them all year. just love their size and guard combo of carter and dunn

I can't believe Syracuse got a 1. And West Virginia gets a 2.
How the heck does Washington get a 10 and Cal gets an when they just beat them yesterday
"Hell's frozen over, Pigs are flying! The Saints have won the Super Bowl"
Because Cal is better than Washington.
One game doesn’t make the difference.
Also, it’s more likely both were going to be in, so they seeded them and ignored the game and then went about worrying about the other parts of the selection process. That’s actually pretty common. They have to focus on so much, if two teams are both getting in they’ll very often ignore the championship game.

A Baylor, A&M elite 8 match up in Houston would be epic.

Epic indeed.
Interesting that Utah St is thought of as a sleeper. I’m conflicted because I usually pick against Duke earlier than most because they’re usually overrated (like this year), but it would cause me physical pain to pick A&M over Duke.

Utah State has an awesome draw.
A very, very well represented school in these parts, and it’s not too far for the fans from Utah. They’ll have a borderline homefield advantage, and they’re probably about as good (just less battle tested) as A&M, anyway.
Of course, I’m sure that’s blasphemy in these parts.
I picked A&M...
but they better be careful.
Utah St. shoots the shit out of the 3-ball, and if they get that goin’ it may not matter how well A&M plays.

Not a bad draw for most of the Big 12 teams
Although Ohio State could pose some problems, I don’t think Kansas should have any problems getting to the Final Four.
I honestly do think UT has a good chance to upset UK. I think they match up well in terms of talent and if UT could just get some consistency down, they could pose a legitimate threat to UK.
Baylor and A&M both got terrific draws to get to the Sweet 16. With their region being in Houston, I could see maybe one of them getting to the final four, especially with significant home court advantage.
Kansas State doesn’t have a bad side of the bracket to play on either. Who knows, UNT might beat them, but on the whole, KSU shouldn’t have too many problems.
Missouri can’t really complain for its draw of Clemson and then West Virginia after the way they finished the year.
Oklahoma State got a pretty tough draw in Georgia Tech and Ohio State, but Anderson vs. Turner should be epic in the 2nd round.
After Fuentes blows a save and an Angels loss to the Indians:

I'm not sure UT beats Wake, let alone UK
The biggest criticism I have of UT isn’t their shooting or FT’s or defense (though all have had some pretty ugly stretches this year), but that once the game gets to a certain point, they basically roll over. Basketball is a game that ebbs and flows and the players involved shouldn’t ever really think they’re out. But it really does look like this team is ready for the season to be over.

more a product of inability to shoot FTs
this surely corresponds to “when the game gets to a certain point” but i think the FT shooting is by far the biggest problem. it make the team susceptible to any number of effective strategies

I could definitely get Minny in there.
Currently I’m struggling with BYU and KSU. If BYU gets to the Sweet 16, they get to play in Salt Lake City and I’d favor them against any team they could play there. But I don’t know if I favor them in OKC against Kansas State.
Frankly, KSU may not have played as well in their wins as BYU, but they’ve beaten better teams. My first draft had BYU in the Final Four, but I think at this point I’ll be taking KSU and playing safe in competitive leagues.
BYU
People have them going crazy and A&M losing to Utah St.????
Utah St. will be playing in front of damn hear a home crowd against a team they might be better than.
I’m not sure that’s a stretch.
3rd or 4th best team in the big 12????
I mean don’t get me wrong, Utah St. looks like a very good team, but not better than A&M.
It will be a partisan crowd but it’s still not like playing in front of 12k against you.
I find it funny that people are piling on Utah St.
I'm confused by it as well.
If this were No.23 A&M at Utah State (which it won’t be), wouldn’t A&M be favored?
This is a team that beat Clemson and Minnesota early in the year and has a win @Mizzou. Their other road losses are to Washington (No.19 at the time), KState, Texas (No.1 at the time), Baylor and OKState. I understand thinking it will be a close game that Utah State could steal, but it sounds like people are going a bit overboard.

Maybe A&M would be favored by bettors and media.
But probably not by the most accurate college basketball predictor I know of. Though I would probably have it close to 50/50.
"it" being "I."
It has USU at 52%, so a coin flip. If it was truly at Utah St, it would be a little higher, but not much. Game’s a toss up.
Yeah...
ESPN has some evaluation techniques that show your percentages based on various things and they had the game pretty close as well. Guess I was underrating USU.
If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?
JD: Eddie Guardado.
by GhettoBear04 on Mar 16, 2010 1:49 PM CDT up reply actions
I think TAMU is about as good as people think they are.
But I think Utah State is better. Again, I’m only saying if this game is played 100 times, Utah State wins a couple more than 52 of them. I will be far from shocked if A&M wins, but I think it’s slightly unlikely.
But, the reason I think so many people are picking them is possibly illogical. There is just about always at least one 12/5 upset. Everyone knows this, it’s popular, so everyone is going to pick at least one 12/5, and this, for a few reasons, is probably the most likely one to be an upset. So in looking for their must-have 12>5, I’m sure a lot of people just pick the one they think is the most likely.
I don’t know what the current rate of picks for Utah State is, but if more than 55% of fans, at most, are picking USU, yeah, that would indicate underrating A&M.
Does anyone know...

This is what I've been wondering about...
…the 4 teams in this regional are Baylor, ND, Sam Houston State, and Old Dominion. No real big state schools involved. Doesn’t it seem unlikely that a Baylor-ND matchup would not be sold out? Am I just being naive?

there will be plenty of seats that can be bought day of on the street. I’ve never had a problem getting cheaper than stubhub and the like. May pay a slight premium to face, but unless you’re just totally risk averse I’d wait scalp.
Location?
I’ve been the the first two rounds in a lot of places and usually scalp game day for a discount to face. Wait until 2-3 minutes into game one of the set and you’ll get cheap seats in the lower bowl.

My wife and I are going (so 2 tickets), but we can’t get there until Friday and will miss the first game. I know Sam Houston State isn’t a pushover, but I feel pretty good about our chances in that game. So, ideally, we could just get tickets for the Saturday game.
