Tim Cowlishaw chat session
NicNic: Who is your choice for the 5th SP spot in the rotation for the Rangers? (not neccessarily who Texas brass will go with, but who do YOU feel has earned it)Cowlishaw: Good question, Nic, I think on May 15 it has not yet been earned. Pitchers are just now getting to the 4-inning mark. But let's start with what we know. Rich Harden and Scott Feldman are the top two. Colby Lewis is considered third although I think that's suspect. He wasn't good yesterday and the Rangers are basing too much on how he found the plate in Japan. Easier to do when the power hitters aren't there. I would not move Wilson out of the bullpen. He's too valuable there. I think Matt Harrison and Tommy Hunter should be 3-4 (right now) and the 5th spot should come down to McCarthy and Lewis. I would lean towards McCarthy. I know this is about the third time he has re-invented his throwing motion and pitch repertoire but he still has greater potential than Colby Lewis.

I was at the game yesterday.
Lewis looked good, it’s just that in the second his pitches flattened out a bit. Not a big deal if you ask me.

I suppose you could see it more clearly in person,
but he looked like crap on t.v. His pitches were up and they were getting hit pretty hard. I hope he was just having a bad day, but based on what I saw, I was unimpressed.

Feliz and Holland
If we send Feliz and Holland back down to the minors for the first 12 days of the season does that mean they have another year until they can reach free agency?
Does sending them back to the minors do anything in regards to their options or service time?
by Monkey Brain on Mar 15, 2010 4:38 PM CDT up reply actions
It uses an option
It also means that they won’t accrue service time, but Holland would have to be in the minors until around mid-September to delay free agency, while Feliz would have to stay down there until mid-June.

AAA Rotation
Adam,
In your years following this team, have you ever seen a better AAA rotation than this one:
Holland
Feliz
Harrison
McCarthy
Kiker/Mathis/Moscoso/Perez/Hurley?
Jack Daddy
hurley is on 60 day DL
broken wrist
anyway id rather have hurley as about the 10th starter in AAA (my feelings are well known) — and id rather see kiker./moscoso/perez/mathis ahead of him anyway
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

Nope
We’ll see if that ends up being the rotation or not, but that would be one of the better AAA rotations anywhere since WWII.

Lewis
I disagree with Cowlishaw’s take that Lewis doesn’t have McCarthy’s potential.
Lewis was as highly regarded as McCarthy (if not more so) coming up through the minors, and while he is four years older, he’s also had a level of success that McCarthy hasn’t, along with a recent history of proving that he can stay healthy for a full season.
I still think McCarthy can contribute, but Cowlishaw is selling Lewis more than a little short.

I agree
"You promised me, Eckstein, that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I noticed that during the most trying periods of my life, there have only been one set of prints in the sand. Why, when I have needed you most, have you not been there for me?" David Eckstein replied, "Because my little legs had gotten tired, and you were carrying me." And I looked down and saw that I was still carrying David Eckstein.
Then he grounded out weakly to second.
To follow up
I just don’t see how you can throw Lewis out after a limited viewing.

Derek Holland - Forgotten Man?
Why do I feel like Holland has largely been written off this Spring as having a shot? I know much of it was falling behind due to the injury, but it was just the first week. I mean, are we really sending our top LH prospect (above high school age — i.e., ignoring Perez) back to AAA by comparing his performance in 4 innings to McCarthy’s and Matty H over 6-7? It just seems strange that we are conceding that race with 3 weeks to go.
Morevover, if you flip just 3 of Hunter’s starts last year for 3 of Holland’s (who was gassed by Sept), their overall #s are flipped and its Holland with the spot.
It also concerns me that Lewis could potentially stink it up for 2 months before getting yanked because he was assured a rotation spot. That might cost us 2 wins, and when you are projecting that 3 teams from the West could win 85-90 games, that could ruin the season.
Let’s give the 5 spots to the 5 guys with the best stuff that have harnessed that stuff and give us the best chance to win, EVERY night.
I have a sneaky suspicion that we have 3 new starters by July and we wonder how the hell we broke camp with the rotation we did.
Jack Daddy
+1
By the way, what would be so bad in giving colby lewis a minor league tune up before the big leagues? That seems much more appropriate. However, does Lewis have options/ would he accept a minor league assignment?
baseBALLIN!
I doubt it
Seeing as the Rangers lost him the first time on a waiver claim, I’d imagine he’s out of options.
"He's not coming back. That chick was like, the Pele of anal."
-- Sterling Archer
Well
He’s out of options. And I think he has enough service time where he could refuse a minor league assignment, which he’d likely do.

by lost in space on Mar 15, 2010 5:59 PM CDT up reply actions
yes, he doesn't have to earn
a spot in the rotation this spring. That was one of the factors that made him choose Texas. Now, if he sucks in April-May, the Rangers will reevaluate.
by Randy Richardson on Mar 15, 2010 6:03 PM CDT up reply actions
Huh, hadn't heard that...
not sure why they would guarantee a spot to someone that hasn’t proven he belongs in the rotation in the first place.

Two reasons
1) They felt he was good enough to warrant it

But his reasoning to get to those conclusions are always horrible. It makes it tough to take someone seriously who might have the right answer, but has no clue how he got there.

is it just coincidence
that the guys fighting for 1 spot (2 if you include Hunter’s “spot”), save Feliz, have more or less pitched very well this spring. while the 3 guys that have been assured spots have a collective era over 9?
Why assure anything? again, i get it with Lewis and understand that it took him to get him to sign. But did they need the signing that badly that they had to make that soft promise? small bone to pick, but I fear that it comes back to bite us. His stuff looked very avg, at best, to me yesterday (on tv, at least).
Jack Daddy
I wouldn't
I liked the Lewis signing from a $$ and depth standpoint. I was intrigued by his performance overseas, particularly his KO #s. And I would have no problem with him winning a spot in the rotation resulting in Feliz/Holland getting more development time. But what we have been told is that has a spot even if he’s not one of the 5 best guys, but that the 5th spot will come down to the best guy. Makes little sense. That’s all.
Notice I didn’t say I thought he was horrible – just that his stuff seemed average and that he seemed to be nibbling and was constantly falling behind the hitters and when he challenged more he got pounded.
Jack Daddy
x
But what we have been told is that has a spot even if he’s not one of the 5 best guys,
I think they signed him and agreed to make him a starter because they made the judgment that he was one of the 5 best they’d have.
The fact that Matt Harrison or Brandon McCarthy has pitched better than him this spring shouldn’t impact that, unless they feel, based on what they’ve seen this spring, that they were off in their evaluation of him.
by Adam J. Morris on Mar 15, 2010 6:00 PM CDT up reply actions
huh
That’s provocative.
Not mediocre. Right about average
I wold like to get a better scouting report on lewis
we got a bunch of guys saying average who watched him on TV and one guy saying good who watched him in person. Even if that start has no bearing on his future potential, I would like to know how he actually was yesterday
""It was a ball, dude," Davis said. "I don’t swing at balls anymore." -CD
1st inning- good command in the zone and flashed a good breaking ball
2nd inning- bad command in the zone, couldn’t overcome a fielding mishap by Olmedo, put one on a tee for Upton.
No gun readings on TV, but didn’t look like anything special. One high swinging strike looked like he brought some pretty good heat.
Much more compact delivery, definitely a different pitcher that’s not gonna be all over the place. I suspect he’s gonna have to find consistency on the edges. Doesn’t look overpowering.
