The LSB CBSSports.com League Update

Okay, we've got everyone signed up for the LSB CBSSports.com league now, although again, if anyone else wants to create a semi-official one, you can click on the link here to create one and get 50% of the regular price for the Commissioner's League package.  And if anyone here create's another LSB premium league, I'll provide regular updates on that league, as well.

The standings have been set up to be publicly viewable, so you can click here and see how the standings are set up.  This is going to be Rotisserie-style, with 6 categories for pitchers and 6 categories for hitters.  I was tempted to throw in one of the more arcane categories -- No Hitters, maybe, or Triples -- but decided to stay pretty traditional, using AVG, OBP, SLG, R, RBIs, and steals for hitters, and ERA, WHIP, Ks, wins, saves, and holds for pitchers.

I also toyed with the idea of doing an auction-style draft, which this package allows for, and which I thought would be fun, but I decided I didn't want someone who ended up missing the draft altogether to just get stuck out with whatever leftovers there were when the auction was over.  Still, it is another option that is available for folks who want to sign up.

I move this comment be stricken from the record

Argumentative and lack of foundation.

"You promised me, Eckstein, that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I noticed that during the most trying periods of my life, there have only been one set of prints in the sand. Why, when I have needed you most, have you not been there for me?" David Eckstein replied, "Because my little legs had gotten tired, and you were carrying me." And I looked down and saw that I was still carrying David Eckstein.

Then he grounded out weakly to second.

Yep

If you can’t understand that sites like this cost money to run and how little of an annoyance this really is, then you don’t deserve an explanation.

From Jeff's posts at LL about their league, I got the feeling that you guys were told that you WILL do this

This sort of thing happens all the time in the newspaper industry. Corporate says you MUST run this ad promotion package that includes fluff stories in the news hole about businesses that advertised in this program. It happens in newspapers across the nation owned by all sorts of different companies. I just figured this was pretty much the same thing, where SB Nation was able to charge CBS more by guaranteeing that it would be on every baseball blog.

i dont care, but the thematically thing kinda rubs me wrong, you might as well be selling hard on pills it doesnt matter if its a fantasy league instead.
In any case, this is something that they’ve asked us to offer which would seem to offer a benefit for some users, and is thematically in line with what this site is about

this site is thematically about the owners fantasy baseball league? im pretty sure that thematically its not at all why any of us come here.

SBN is owned mostly by Comcast, so pull out the fiddle when it comes to making the black, i understand what you are doing and why you are doing it. but just be honest which i think you are good about and dont cram it down our throats. i think every1 here understands sbn is a Multimillion dollar company owned by one of the biggest media outlets in the world. i think we all assume you make at least something worth the trouble to do this site, but honestly, i dont come here for SBN, i dont care about most of the functions that SBN provides to the whole community of bloggers. Im here for rangers baseball and rangers baseball fans alone, nothing more. Im not even here for you or your take ajm, although your stuff is constantly improving and generally worth every1’s time. i just dont want you to think we come here for SBN, or CBS fantasy baseball or any of that, we come here for Rangers Baseball.

at least adams making a buck off it. which make him throwing this out something im totally cool with as long as its not overkill. but for you to insinuate that we all come here for baseball so that must somehow include fantasy baseball when in fact we all come here for in depth reporting on texas rangers baseball, is a little disingenuous.

honestly i only hopped in the comments to see people bitch at adam b/c i knew they would, and to read adams response, which i think he did a pretty good job on. hell its fantasy baseball who cares, but its all good discussion, i guess. i know i had to do a little knowledge check on Sportblogs Inc or whatever. Clearly, reading comprehension is just one of the many things you fail at in life

I said many of us here are interested in fantasy baseball, not all.

And you’re the one talking about how this thematically fits into the site. This isn’t a plug for some online poker site. AJM isn’t asking us to invest in Dykstra’s latest business venture (at least not this time). To keep the site running, there are many worse things they could have done that doesn’t involve starting a fantasy baseball league and offering 50% off to those that might actually want to start their own league.

P.S. I am failing to understand why you are posting here past trying to troll this topic. If you don’t care, then why spend even a second of your time bitching about it.

The "theme" of LSB?

If you want to get strict about it, then we should quit talking about Frisco players not on the 40 man roster. Or maybe it’s just the 25 man.

The theme is dictated by AJM and possibly the commenters. I guarantee there are more fantasy baseball participants than soccer fans. Maybe more than Cowboys fans.

"You promised me, Eckstein, that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I noticed that during the most trying periods of my life, there have only been one set of prints in the sand. Why, when I have needed you most, have you not been there for me?" David Eckstein replied, "Because my little legs had gotten tired, and you were carrying me." by WyoRanger on Mar 16, 2010 1:48 PM CDT up reply actions

and besides that

how many times has adam made a main page post about something other than the Rangers, or sports altogether. The theme is basically what Adam thinks people on this blog will find interesting.

If the issue was about Adam peddling a Maxim subscription, then maybe I could see the point. But it is about selling a fantasy baseball league to people who love the Rangers. You have to be dense or stubborn not to see the correlation.

Man, those are some serious nits you're picking there...

It’s a baseball site.

A fantasy baseball league would seem to be pretty damn thematically similar.

Granted it’s not a fantasy baseball site, but damn man.

It’s not like he went and violated our virgin ears with an evil insidious Direct TV offer like He Who Shall Not Be Named. (The Horror!).

SBN provides us with the medium, and AJM with the content. Without their tech support and infrastructure there’s no way we’d all be able to come on here and interact with each other in such a reliable, user friendly way all in what is now basically real time. Do they do it for money? Yes, of course. But why am I supposed to hold this against them again? And how does it relate to the LSB fantasy baseball league thing?

I’m not trying to be a jirk, but I’m lost.

Saying you don’t come here for SBN or AJM is like saying you don’t go to the restaurant cause you like the food, you go cause you like to eat there.

People are way too demanding about free sites

It is as if people feel entitled to everything on the internet without any sort of “cost”. When in this case the cost is having to hear about a fantasy league that most people didn’t get invited to (because you can’t have 300 people in one league), then it is minimal. Heck, no one complained about Adam’s college football pick’em updates, and that isn’t even baseball.

Like I said before, if SBN can make some money off this, that is a good thing for everyone. If you want people to provide you services for free, try out North Korea.

Thoughts

I understand your point Adam, and I also understand that it wasn’t your decision to do this. But, I’m just a dude, a selfish consumer of the greatness of the internet. I think most of us would agree that web advertising is in large part, an annoyance, and if we had our way, this site would be free from advertising altogether. I also understand that is not realistic. I just made the statement that I wish I this advertising wasn’t here.

I think there’s something larger than the “advertising is annoying” argument going on here that makes me not like this particular method though…

In the 4+ years I’ve been visiting this wonderful site, I have, at least in my head, developed a quasi-relationship (I know this isn’t the correct word choice, but I can’t think of anything more accurate) with you where I see you as sort of my Rangers Leader. You are, in my eyes, a fan who is a leader of fans. You are not a member of the media—in fact, you are my voice in respectfully challenging those members of the media on their published perspectives, and I know they hear you, which I think is cool, and makes me somewhat proud.

Anyway, there is a certain amount of trust allotted to you in being my fan-leader; I want to know that you are in it for the love of my team and for me as a fan. Ultimately, I think you are. I guess I don’t like that the powers that be, those that are in it for the money (I know you are compensated something for this—but I would almost certainly bet the money is not why you run this site) are asking you to use your position as a trusted leader to sell something to us, your followers.

I don’t know, those are just my two cents.

I don't think...

Adam has every asked you or anyone to bestow upon him the title of “Rangers Leader.” If that’s what you get out of this site, that’s your thing. However, Adam, me, and the rest of us have different things we get out of this site. And, honestly, if you see something on any website that you don’t want to read or you have no interest in, is it really so difficult to just scroll on by it? Does an ad, clearly marked as such, that you’re being forced in no way to participate in, really pollute your experience in any way whatsoever?

by ghostofErikThompson on Mar 16, 2010 3:07 PM CDT up reply actions

No, it is not difficult to scroll by at all.

I scroll by internet advertising all the time. And no, it doesn’t pollute my experience. This is however, in my opinion, different than the typical advertising we see on this site, and I was simply stating my thoughts on this type of advertising. I will definitely scroll right on by it in the future. It’s not a big deal, I just wanted to further explain my perspective.

And no, Adam has never asked me to be his Rangers Leader. I never said he did. I said that was my perspective of him, and regardless of whether anyone responds and agrees with me on this point, I would argue that there are others who hold this perspective as well.
