You're right
No way would I give Dutch and Feliz for Mauer.
We need to not always make hard work out of sex- Rick Carlisle.
hold up
isn’t Mauer a FA after this year?
AJM, what do you think is a reasonable offer for Mauer?

Throw in Brandon McCarthy
and I think we’ve got a deal.

What about Adrian Gonzalez for Smoak, Holland and Teagarden?

Holland is untouchable. We are never trading him.
I have WAY too much money invested in Derek Holland Texas Rangers gear, autographs and other memorabilia.

Well then who out of your pitchers would you be willing to trade?
I don’t think you’d be willing to trade Feliz at this point. How about Scheppers, Perez, Smoak, for a gold glove 50 home run hitter?
"Never have a motto, that's what I always say" - Me
To be fair
TR isn’t the one publishing articles daily about a Ryan Howard for Albert Pujols trade. Despite being about as dumb as anything I’ve ever seen TR list, people are actually harassing Tony LaRussa about it…
Go Rice Owls!
How do questions like this make it to the damn mailbag??
I have always wondered: When a player has to have surgery, does the player have to pay for it, does the team pay for it, or is the cost shared? What about the cost of rehab after surgery — same deal?
"Big whoop, wanna fight about it?"
what's wrong with that?

well
maybe I could have guessed.
Anyway, you also have to consider that the person asking the question might not be as old as you (same with the people reading it)

I agree, though I'm sure most people here know the answer..
It’s not a bad question. Even more so when you consider all the usual crap that makes TR’s bag.
It more like how do questions like this make it:
I keep hearing about pitchers with “great stuff.” Could you elaborate on what they mean by stuff?
— James P., New York City
It simply means the quality of their pitches, whether it’s the movement of the ball, location or sheer velocity. I still cringe when pitchers are described as “filthy” or “nasty.” I also loathe the term “winning ugly.” Hate that.
Really? Did James think people meant his personal belongings or his cars or something. I mean is James even a fan of the Rangers for him to not know a term like that. I just dont get TRs shtick.

OT: For New Orleans lovers out there...
…my wife and I are going for the first time this weekend. We’re super-excited as we’ve started booking a trip a few times but never actually gone through with it. Any recommendations for things to do/see and especially any recommendations for places to eat? We like spicy and are probably mainly interested in seafood, but all recommendations are welcome.

Emeril's
Emeril’s is excellent.
I went to Commander’s Palace the last time I was there…it was very good, but a little more fru than I usually prefer.

I went to Commander's Palace about three weeks ago.
Insanely expensive, even though it was very good.
Don’t buy the hype about Patty O’s and the hurricanes. Not nearly as good as I was told they would be.

Good to hear.
I’m not a huge hurricane fan anyways.
I had a med school friend go there during a conference last fall. He sent me a picture mail of their prix fixe menu…it was just stupid. The menu plus the wine they had was just insane, but I guess that’s what you can afford when neurosurgeons are paying.

Commander's Palace and the Breakfast at Brennan's are both insanely good, but, yah... REALLY expensive.
The bread pudding at Commander’s makes my pants tight for days afterward, and the crab meat + eggs dish thing at Brennan’s makes me want to chew my right leg off and hurl at a foreigner.
So… good….
If I lived in New Orleans and was substantially less poor than I am now, I’d be such a fatty bo-batty.

Also...
the white chocolate bread pudding that Dirk speaks of can be taken to go from Palace Cafe (one of the many Brennan family joints). As Dirk describes….it’s worth it.
White Chocolate bread pudding?

I kept seeing Breakfast at Brennan's popping up
But I wasn’t sure if it was because they were just sponsoring links or not. How expensive are we talking for breakfast? I tried looking at their website, but there’s no prices!
As an aside, I hate Hate HATE when restaurants don’t put prices on their websites. They don’t have to be accurate up to the minute, or month even, but give me an idea of what to expect. At least when it’s in the city I live in, I know what websites that are reliable or friends I can ask, but it’s especially annoying when I’m visiting a new place.

You can usually just hit up a website that rates restaurants in the area.
They’ll usually have a price range for each place. Best advice I can offer for that one.

Think about comparable to an upscale dinner, iirc.
The crab + poached egg thing is like my favorite thing ever, so it’s worth it to me.
They do a three course thing w/ an appatizer + banana’s foster’s (they kill the Banana’s Foster’s, too, fwiw).
I wanna say we got outta there with 2 people ordering the 3 course thing (plus tip, w/ just water to drink) for around 80~90 bucks? That could be wrong, though.
So, yah.
Expensive.
Especially for a breakfast joint.
But the place is always packed whenever I’ve been (all of three times) so other people must like it too.

Brunch at Commander's Palace
Is a good, cheaper way to see the place and eat there for less $. When I was 12 I saw a waiter bring a white pillow out and put it on the floor so a guy could propose at noonish. Insane.

I'd say
Brennen’s, Commander’s Palace and Emeril’s are the classics. Acme Oyster on Inverness and Bourbon is also great, esp. for lunch and is a wonderful cheap alternative.

There is a bar halfway down Inverness from Bourbon (on the right before you get to the Ritz or Hotel Inverness) that is a magical place to be at 2 a.m. All the strippers go there after work for a drink, have seen it many times, magical.

Food and stuff
Palace Cafe is nice and relatively casual (jeans and a shirt is fine)
Antoine’s for the history (and the food is good)
Same with Galatoire’s.
Take the St. Charles Trolley through the Garden District to the end. You’ll get to see the old houses along St. Charles and there is a diner at the end of the line. Man, the name is escaping me. Actually, it closed after the hurricane but I heard it opened back up. Just a cool old diner if it’s back. Not helping I know, but I do love that damn diner, just wish I could remember the name.
Commander’s is the most famous of the New Orleans spots but I’ve never made it there. They used to require a jacket. That may have been loosened up though.
If you’re into the history thing there are a couple of old plantations not to far from town that are kind of cool. Oak Alley is one of them. Any hotel can direct you to it.
As a first timer it’s pretty much required that you have beignets at Cafe Du Monde in the quarter. Right off Jackson square where you can also walk through the St. Louis Cathedral.
Walk the quarter but don’t just focus on Bourbon.
Cafe Du Monde is overrated, IMO.
If you decide to do the haunted tour, don’t believe everything they tell you about the LaLaurie House. It was bad, but it wasn’t as bad as they want it to be for that tour.

Thanks!
We have fallen in love with beignets over the past couple years. We first had them at Cafe Lux in Dallas, but haven’t really found them many other places until we moved to Houston. We’ve only been to one down here (Crescent City Beignets), but we go all the time. So we’ll probably have beignets for breakfast everyday.
I was just looking at the Garden District, it seems like something we might like. We’ll be staying on St. Charles, so the Trolley seems like a good idea. I imagine we’ll do a lot of walking around the French quarter, that’s the thing we’re most excited about. We’ve had so many people tell us that we would love NOLa and the French Quarter that it’s going to be great to finally see if they were right!

Acme oyster house was the best place I ate. Spent 3 days there last week. Bread pudding was by far the best I had. May have to wait in line to get in but it’s worth it. Emerils new Orleans was very good too. Didn’t try bread pudding there though. Palace cafe sucked donkey balls. And bread pudding tasted like said balls. Had breakfast at Mothers and pretty good. If the Rangers don't make the play-offs this year I'm gonna go all Epic Bearded Man on your ass.
Okay....I just read everyone's suggestions....they're all great.
But there are a couple of must haves that were not listed. These are joints we used to hit up when we lived down there.
Po’ Boys – Johnny’s Po Boys on St. Louis in the Quarter…consistently voted best po boys year in, year out.
NOLA Flavor – go to the French Market on the North Side of the River Walk. It’s like the end of the quarter if you’re walking north along the Mississippi. They have booths in there that serve FRESH boudin sausage and boudin balls. Trust me.
All in all, I’d avoid Cafe Du Monde bc it’ll eat up about 2 or 3 hours of your morning when you could be doing something else. If you’ve got the coin then for sure hit up Commander’s and all of the Brennan family restaurants.
I hate people that go to New Orleans.

OT: JP is making me fall in love with Jorge Alfaro
C Jorge Alfaro: In case you couldn’t already tell, I kinda dig watching this kid play. Alfaro struggled some today, which is always a good thing at this stage of development. The ability to recognize breaking balls and adjust accordingly is a skill most 16 year-olds do not possess, so I’m not going to hold today’s struggles in that arena against … See MoreAlfaro. He quietly responded to the off-speed setbacks by spraying hard hit line-drives to all fields, including a few shots to the fence in RF. Alfaro punishes fastballs, showing good weight distribution during a quiet load and excellent extension at the point of attack.
Alfaro is really showing me something so far this Spring and I’m tempted to call him a legit top ten player in the system right now. Yes, I just said that. Alfaro is raw behind the plate and his batting practice prowess, while quite impressive, isn’t without flaws (not to mention real games aren’t played at practice field speed). But I can’t think of a player I’m more excited about at the present and I’m tempted to call Alfaro the most promising 16 year-old Ive seen on a baseball field. Yes, I just said that as well.

The one really big problem is that he's 16 and a catcher.

This is true. But if you believe in the bat and he has some athleticism, there's always the old position change.
Carlos Delgado, Biggio and Paul Konerko come to mind in the positive… lots more in the negative.

by thedirkatron on Mar 16, 2010 9:26 PM CDT up reply actions
Stupid question of the day:
How would the spending in LA be effected when the payroll increases on the major league level ow will it be effected at all? (I know I might be getting ahead of myself with the new ownership not in place yet but I am curious to find out the answer. Hopefully, the spending will be the same if not more than it is now.)
"There's not a man alive who can whup me. I'm too fast. I'm too smart. I'm too pretty. I should be a postage stamp. That's the only way I'll ever get licked." --Muhammad Ali
It's a comlex question that have no specific insight into... but here's my probably stupid 2 cents...
Basically I think JD has shown he’s a believer in spending money in LA, but that it’s also player specific.
Like last year when we were apparently willing to go 4~5 on Ynao, but when that fell through he didn’t go out and spend that money just to spend it.
I have to think that since the new owners seem to be planning on keeping JD around, they’ve bought into this idea, or at the very least they aren’t opposed to it.
My guess is that with the new ownership JD will have more flexibility to go after the guys he and his scouts really, really covet, but we might not see a direct, every-single-year spending increase if we don’t find guys we love to spend it on.
We did spend about 4mm signing just our top three guys alone this year, after all.
That’s pretty big money.
The 40 Trumps All!!!
by thedirkatron on Mar 16, 2010 10:36 PM CDT up reply actions
I think all that makes sense.
The last few years, Hicks has really trusted JD to make competitive (but not completely over the top) offers to free agents, but they have really gone after their draft picks and LA guys super hard, and with a few exceptions, the major ones being Purke and Ynoa, we have signed a lot of the top guys we wanted.

Basically, I disagree with most of what you’re saying. I think these options as 4/5 starter are great. Just have to hope Harden stays healthy and Colby isn’t suck.

Jon he isnt pitching better then others right now, has options, thus making it flexible for the team
to take a harder and longer look on BMac and BGL. Raw ability only goes so far. Its the results that count and there are pitchers pitching better than him.

You're really going to argue spring training results mean anything?
Morality you can fake. Fun you either have or you don't.
I can't speak for them
but I think Harden and Lewis are on Jon’s side.
She say she are the manager.

whaaaaa
ed_price RT @NatsTownNews: The Nationals today unconditionally released OF Elijah Dukes, trimming their camp roster to 44 players.
This is wrong, isn't it?
Now that Hank Blalock signed with Tampa Bay, will Texas get a compensatory pick?

No, the Rangers did not offer compensation so they will not get a Draft pick.
Blalock wasn’t even a Type B, was he?
Seriously, though, it took me two minutes to find two lists of the Elias rankings.
Sullivan’s writing is bad enough at baseline, but he could at least report the basic facts correctly.
Well, TR doesn't deal in "facts"
He deals in 2 things: roster moves and fluff articles for MLB.com.
Beyond that he’s utterly useless as a journalist.
Morality you can fake. Fun you either have or you don't.
He wasn't completely wrong.
The Rangers didn’t offer him compensation — the Rangers just wouldn’t have gotten a pick anyways if they had.
Even when TR's (partially) right he screws it up...
…the Rangers didn’t offer him ARBITRATION.
I have no objection to man walking on the moon.
