Wash Tested Positive for Cocaine
Per SI
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/baseball/mlb/03/17/washington/index.html?eref=sihp
Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington tested positive for cocaine during the 2009 season, SI.com has learned.
Washington, 57, has been subject to increased drug testing since his failed test, which was administered by Major League Baseball last July, and he has passed all of his subsequent tests. In deciding to support Washington and retain him as manager, the Rangers accepted his apology as heartfelt and also his explanation that this was a one-time transgression.

like I was Moron about wash testing for coke?
yea I am an idiot
you're a moron
because you think a website owes you an apology for a rumor you got maybe 25% of . right.
And the all caps – you don’t seem very bright
""It was a ball, dude," Davis said. "I don’t swing at balls anymore." -CD
no
you know why it wasn’t reliable? for exactly the stuff he got wrong.
""It was a ball, dude," Davis said. "I don’t swing at balls anymore." -CD
Oh whatever, don't be so bitter
I will welcome any fanpost that gets a few thing wrong but accurately lets me know that my manager is doing coke
that’s gold
I'll wait for the real story less than a day later
that doesn’t look like it was presented by a 12 year old
""It was a ball, dude," Davis said. "I don’t swing at balls anymore." -CD
I'm not bitter
I just don’t want to congratulate someone for getting so wrong because he got the underlying rumor right. That is not good way to encourage accurate dissemination of news.
The fact that wash did coke is the story. But the Rangers reaction to is actually more important, which has more implications on the Rangers future

I got a good answer from Oracle....
That’s all I was looking for. I wanted to know if people really get those 2 words confused…..I get the whole there, their, they’re confusion that some people have. I didn’t think lose and loose fell under the same category but I’ve noticed that maybe it does. Now it was confirmed.
Because if you think the word “lose” is spelled “loose”, its not a typographical error to type it that way.
Fanatics - my webcomic
Yeah, it very well could've been a typo.
But I’ve seen tons of people that spell it “loose” every time. I was just wondering.

it's the classic problem with modern communication
people are willing to listen to and react to any tweet or blog post rumor they hear. The problem is that there is a lot of noise in that signal. Yeah, journalists are slow, but they are slow because they go to the effort to filter stories for false positives and dead end nonsense. They do it so we don’t have to.
I don’t ever believe stories that are compressed into 140 characters or posted quickly to beat everyone else. If it is a real story, then someone did their homework. That takes time, and I’ll wait for it.

Who cares
i know about it now. And I know what actually happened – which I think is more important.
Think about this. If you actually had a link to someone and posted the story you told, I’d be pretty pissed today knowing the actual facts, which don’t involve a ridiculous manager change

because I care about an accurate story?
I actually have a pretty great life.
Let’s be clear: you’re mad at me because I’m making fun of Randy Galloway’s god son for breaking a story that Steve Buechele would become the manager of this team.
Yeah – remember that.
""It was a ball, dude," Davis said. "I don’t swing at balls anymore." -CD
I'm not mad at you at all.
Your comments amuse me and I was simply making a comment based on an observation. People with that much bitterness over something so unimportant typically have pretty shitty lives. I group you into that category.
you just asked in the most smarmy way possible
why somebody made a typo.
I guess you need to add yourself to some category you made up because you’re in college and think you know everything about everybody
""It was a ball, dude," Davis said. "I don’t swing at balls anymore." -CD
I don't believe that it was a typo.
There’s an alarming # of people out there who spell “lose” loose…that’s all. I was trying to figure out why. It seems like a very weird word to misspell. Not a typo.
Typo, jackass. Typo
People make sound typos all the time. Are you new to the internet?
""It was a ball, dude," Davis said. "I don’t swing at balls anymore." -CD
No, but you must be.
Because I’ve listerally seen over a thousand people spell “lose” as “loose” multiple times over and over. It’s how a lot of people spell it…..my guess is that he’s one of them.
I've seen literally a thousand people spell "the" "teh"
It’s a typo
""It was a ball, dude," Davis said. "I don’t swing at balls anymore." -CD
oh wow
so I was write about it being a sound typo. I’m sorry you didn’t know those exist

Hmmmm
I’m confused. If you don’t know the difference betweens the spellings of lose and loose then it’s not a typo, it’s misspelling. If you spell “lose” losee, then it’s probably just an accidental extra e at the end….but if you spell it loose b/c you think that is how “lose” is spelled then it’s not a typo.
Over a thousand people?

Wait a second.
You’re going to defend a bunch of people spelling a simple word wrong? I’m not taking ab03’s side on everything, but dude. . .
My standard for this:
If you spell it that way once, or once in a while… typo. If you spell it that way EVERY TIME, it’s bad spelling. Sort of like how my ex-wife spells headache “headace” or feel “fell.”

""It was a ball, dude," Davis said. "I don’t swing at balls anymore." -CD
Hmmm
You attack a guy for throwing up a post about a RUMOR, that he later took down because he admittedly didn’t have any link to a credible source. The story comes out as “breaking news” and while he wasn’t dead on (so far) he did hit the premise of the story right on. And then you go off and attack him for not having every detail correct, yet I’m the cocksucker b/c I defend him from pricks like you? Get over yourself, you’re not that important.
by Drew062682 on Mar 17, 2010 1:26 PM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
and am I not right about attacking him
he’s having regrets about doing it for exactly the reason he shouldn’t have done it. I shouldn’t have called him a moron and I apologize for that but I’m not wrong
""It was a ball, dude," Davis said. "I don’t swing at balls anymore." -CD
I disagree.
He’s not a journalist. He’s a fan that was bringing a rumor to the attention of several people that would find it interesting. I for one thought it was kinda cool that I knew about this before most everyone else. While I think he probably would’ve been better off not mentioning RG (which is what I think he regrets more than anything), I don’t think that it was wrong to post a rumor in the first place….even if it turns out that it’s not dead on.
Well we disagree
I think what’s coloring your opinion is that you didn’t believe it. Otherwise, you would have been pretty pissed thinking that RW was getting fired for Steve Buechele if that wasn’t the case.
But whatever.
""It was a ball, dude," Davis said. "I don’t swing at balls anymore." -CD
Nah
Because all-in-all I think that the manager position in baseball is vastly overrated. Take Clint Hurdle for example….here recently he led the Rockies on that insane end of the year winning streak and took them to the World Series….then last year he gets fired and Tracy takes over and does something farily similar though not quite as miraculous. Did Hurdle forget how to manage? In my opinion…no. It’s an overrated position.
Yep.
ab03 is just a clown that needs to draw attention to himself by doing his best BrettGarden and Dirkatron impression.
I regret making fun of you for all caps
you seem like a nice enough guy and I do feel bad you are having regrets. It is what it is. If it makes you feel any better, I doubt he’ll see this or care that much

Major league managers, coaches and other clubhouse personnel have been subject to drug testing since 2008, when MLB adopted the measure as one of George Mitchell’s recommendations as part of his report regarding steroid and drug use in baseball.
He's not going to get fired.
If they were going to fire him, they would have done it last year when he actually tested. I would certainly like to hear an explanation, though.

remember when Quincy was cut by the Cowboys....
Jerry was walking a fine line because Quincy had just failed a drug test. They claimed that Quincy was let go based on performance on the field, but it was a really flimsy defense that would only work in the NFL where the owners have all the power.
Current thought:
If the Rangers fired Warsh last year, they would have had their asses sued for wrongful termination. The team was competing for a division title at the time—it would have been hard to claim the termination was based on performance….
But the game would change if he did indeed offer to resign

I’d also suggest Steve Buechele, favorite Ranger of yesteryear and a North Arlington resident all these years (he never fled to Southlake as others did), is being fast-tracked to be a major league manager. Boo got back into baseball last season as the Class A manager at Bakersfield, and moves up to Frisco this season, a huge and prestigious jump.
(Sidenote: Don’t panic, Ron. Boo is a Nolanette, but if things go well in Arlington, then all is well. There are 29 others MLB jobs.)

Wash’s termination quickly follows, giving way for the Rangers’ new manager, Keith Richards.

While I’m not at all happy to hear the news, I can understand why the Rangers didn’t fire him, given how he handled the situation.
It’s stupid on his part to have put himself in that situation in the first place, but he’s not the only current manager to have had issues with drugs and/or alcohol, and probably won’t be the last.

I think the PR hit from standing behind one addict while separating yourself from the other would be one they would like to avoid. That being said, I recognize the difference between the two but, to be honest, kchorton’s comment was the first thing that popped into my head when I read Longhorn’s comment/question.

Actually...that's a tremendous point.
The Rangers have already established themselves as “We’re going to help our guys through their problems.” If they turn their back on Wash, that’s a double standard at best and accusatory racism at worst.

Fans are more likely to accept somebody driving home

OK
That’s beside the point, though.
LaRussa got behind the wheel of a car while drunk, and very well could have killed someone.
Wash did a few lines, and as far as we know, didn’t put himself in a position where he could have harmed others.
Forgive me if I don’t see the drug use as worse than the drunk driving just because of some idiotic pre-concieved societal notion that “drugs are bad,” except for the ones you drink.
And given that two active players- Josh Hancock and Nick Adenhart- have been killed in the past 3 years due to accidents involving alcohol, I’d think MLB would be taking drunk driving by the manager of one of its teams pretty damn seriously.
"He's not coming back. That chick was like, the Pele of anal."

I think the difference in Josey's assessment of the
two incidents is pretty obvious. No need to kid ourselves about that.
I think MLB takes drunk driving seriously
but a manager who does coke (and you know it’s not the first freaking time) is something completely different.

Yeah.
The former is a lot worse.
I’m sure you know why you view the two very differently in this particular case though. I realize you can’t acknowledge it as that’s part of the bit, but it’s pretty obvious what the big difference affecting your judgement of the situation is.
Yep
One is endangering others with his behavior, the other is only hurting himself.
The “drugs are worse than alcohol” argument isn’t going to find an audience with me. Way too much personal and familial experience with both to think one’s worse than the other.
"He's not coming back. That chick was like, the Pele of anal."
