Ron Washington failed a drug test
He was tested in July 2009 and notified MLB after the test that he might fail. I feel shocked.

Nolan backed him, “Were family”…
Nolan didnt judge him…
JD and Nolan went to doctors to look into cocaine, and doctors confirmed that RW only used it once, was not a habitual user… On this, they gave RW another chance…

So if longevity is really important to you, I can see leaving him out of the top 25. I also wasn’t considering movies.
But Chapelle in his heyday (much like Mitch Hedberg) is equal to almost anybody else’s prime. I’d say he belongs in the top 10.

And then whenever Wash gets fired (apparently the day after NEVER), Lewin will do a 180 and tell us how much better off the team is without the distraction of having a manager they can’t trust.
That's what Josh has to do tonight, be a pro.

you don’t know the whole story. You do what happened with LaRussa, so ok — opinions form.
We don’t know the whole story with Wash, and won’t know. We can’t say he was or wasn’t putting another’s life at risk because we just don’t know.
So we can’t say what was worse or not because we don’t know what happened with Wash and usage.

And a person is impaired while under the influence of coke. It’s different than alcohol or pot, but there’s impairment.

okay, i'll lay it out there
i’ve driven literally hundreds of times while schitzing, at no time was my ability to drive compromised. my ability to not want more cocaine was significantly decreased as was my ability not to notice every single thing that was going on around me, but my ability to drive, no, that never decreased. i’ve also driven with people who were schitzing, and at no time did i feel unsafe about their ability to operate a vehicle

Cocaine is a stimulant
Alcohol is a depressant.
Coke wakes you up, which is why business people were doing coke in the 80’s to counteract the long hours and lack of sleep.
Alcohol puts you to sleep, see TLR

Just to reply to myself
Yes, there are people who use coke to counteract the use of alcohol.
OTOH, pot is an extreme depressant, so much so that its actually safer than alcohol, since most people fucked up on pot can’t get up off the couch to go get in their car, much less drive the thing.
Oh my god! What can it be? We're all doomed! Who's flying this thing?

we don’t know what Wash did.
The driving after drinking is the bad part, not the act of drinking itself.

You're forgetting something
Bias killed HIMSELF with drugs… Adenhart was not drinking and driving, but was killed (along with two other people in the same crash) by someone else who was drinking. But other than the fact that the cases are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT, I guess they’re similar.
And Tony Larussa didn't kill anybody.
If TLR was rocking a .25 and driving like a complete idiot on the road, I would feel different. But the fact of the matter is he probably didn’t have more than 4 glasses of wine and he fell asleep at a light.
I just don’t think that’s worse than a 57 year old who uses coke “recreationally.”

So I guess you were with him in the car from the restaurant to the light?
Maybe he knocked up a few curbs before he stopped at the light. Maybe he did have a nice little .25 going on before he got caught. We don’t know. That’s the point.
Someone drinking and driving is not any better then someone doing coke “recreationally”. No one knows what either preson did, so this debate is rather pointless. Too many if’s and probably’s in your TLR stance.

But your pure, blind hatred of Washington since Day One makes his crime unforgivable.

My doubts about Wash
happened in May 2007 when he sac bunted Kenny Lofton early in a game the Rangers were trailing to the Yankees 4-1 just when they began to hammer Mussina.
It was at that point that I realized he had no idea what he was doing.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
"Ranger players, especially veterans, weren’t surprised that Daniels couldn’t find a deal"
"The Influence continues." Josey Wales (1/18/10)
I don't remember the game
but looked it up. I would be very surprised if Lofton was called on to sacrifice. the situation was Rangers down 4 to 1 in the thrid inning. Mussina had retired the first 6 batters in succession including a pair of strikeouts. Wilkerson Homered, Cruz doubled, and Chris Stewart walked. The sacrifice was not a net gain for the team, but it did result in a second run for the team as Young grounded to the right side scoring a run.
Mussina pitched 3 more innings, Tejada gave up a couple more runs in the bottom of the 4th, and neither team touched the others’ pen. Rangers lose 6-2.
Pretty non-descript game.
Oh my god! What can it be? We're all doomed! Who's flying this thing?
-Wash
Add that to the fact that
A Kenny Lofton “sacrifice” is nowhere near a Taylor teagarden sacrifice.
While yeah Loftons goal may have just been to move the runner over with his speed he has, and hes shown it throughout his career, a pretty good chance of it being a basehit.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
It was a sac bunt
in a game where the Rangers had Robinson Tejeda as their starter and he was struggling.
http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/NYA/NYA200705090.shtml
This was a game where it appeared that the Rangers were going to need to score several runs to win (they would have needed at least 7). Go to the top of the 3rd and it’s right there for everybody to see.
A sacrifice bunt at the moment, when they were starting to hammer Mussina (who had been terrible that season up to that point) was a terrible, terrible move.
It was at that point that I knew Ron Washington didn’t understand the game and that JD had made a horrific hire…and I was right.
Stop making excuses for these idiots.

Must haves-
Beggars Banquet- Country, bluesy, acoustic greatness that happens to throw in Sympathy for the Devil
Let it Bleed- Same vein. Plus throws in the epic You Cant Always Get What You Want. Gimme Shelter, Midnight Rambler. The title track has a sleazy country feel. Live with Me is one of my faves
Exile on Main St- Dirty, sloppy rock n roll. Decadent. Sounds like they got a bunch of players and broads, shacked up in the chateau, got fucked up, and recorded. Might take a few listens to appreciate
Sticky Fingers- Sister Morphine so cool. A couple country songs(Dead Flowers and Wild Horses). Brown Sugar. I Got the Blues w/ a bad ass Billy Preston solo
Some Girls- Mick and Keith move to NYC. Disco/RnB(Miss You). Punk(Shattered). Country farce(Far Away Eyes). Plus Beast of Burden.
Honorable mention- Goat Head’s Soup, Black and Blue, It’s Only Rock n Roll, and Tattoo You

Maybe it's because I'm probably older than most in here (mid 40s)
but when you get to this age, you realize how bleeping precious life is and how bleeping stupid it is to use cocaine.
You get to a certain point in your life and realize how dumb drugs are and that the end game has no future AND Wash is 10+ years older than me!!
Not sure if Washington was in a setting where he had to deal with peer pressure, if he just got caught up with some ho’ on the west coast or if it’s how he gets thru the night but none of it matters because there are no viable excuses to do this.
It’s not a one-time deal. You don’t just start using one night and then conveniently get busted within a couple days.

Really Jackass
At the age of 33, 7 years ago, I started using meth, because I was tired of being tired. As a truck driver, using said chemical could’ve ruined my career. And I knew that at any time I could be randomly tested by my company, the THP, or the Federal DOT. But knowing all that, I did it anyway. Even with what I knew about the long term affects of meth use.
So why don’t you SHUT THE FUCK UP, and quit using this as one more useless excuse for your racist rant against Wash.

You were a spare truck driver
and Wash is the manager of my favorite baseball team – big difference. I don’t give a shit about you as long as you don’t kill anybody because you’re on the road strung out on meth.
I don’t like the favorite manager of my baseball team using coke because it tends to cloud his decision-making ability and that’s all a baseball manager is supposed to do,..make decisions. And this idiot is 57 years old and still can’t figure out if using cocaine is a good idea.
And then you look at all the managerial dumbassery we’ve had to watch on the field with This Thing over the last three years and the pieces to puzzle begin to fit.

I didn't say that
I know absolutely nothing about the particulars of Ron Washington’s drug use. I can make assumptions (like you are). However, when he, and Ryan both say that it was just one time and that he’s had counselling and been tested 3 times a week ever since without needing re-hab, I’m inclined to believe that he didn’t have any kind of drug habit and if he used before that incident, he hasn’t used since.
Sure, Wash did something stupid. You do stupid things all the time (I’ve read your posts, and most of them are stupid.
I’m a bit surprised by Nolan though. It takes some degree of courage to do what he’s doing. He could have fired Wash then, or now, and said something like, “We have a no tolerance policy about illegal druge use.” In fact, I think that Nolan was the leak, trying to get this out at a time when a) the games don’t mean anything, b) it draws attention to the team, and bad press is better than no press, and c) Its most definitely after last season, when the decision to retain Wash was made.
Good thing? is drug use ever a good thing? I guess snorting coke off a hookers tits is a good thing,….. but I’ve never done that. (I keep saying that, and so far no one has mentioned where it came from. That was Neil Patrick Harris’ line from Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle)
Oh my god! What can it be? We're all doomed! Who's flying this thing?

The point, douchebag
Is that there may have been other undedrlying issues he was/ wasn’t dealing with. I’m sure he didn’t make the decision to use in a vacuum. And people make bad choices, regardless of their age.
You on the other hand, automatically jump to the conclusion that he has been using all along. Nolan’s comments covered that it was discussed with DOCTORS if it could be determined if he was a habitual user, and they said NO! But you want to just presume him guilty.
Thanks for that Komrade!

You were born in the mid-forties? :)
I somewhat agree with you. From what I have read, he said this is the only time he has done cocaine. I will take him for his word on that. As for pot, I am sure he has smoked it in the past. Maybe he just met up with some homies during the ASB and the party got a little out of hand.
My biggest concern is how the team responds on the field to the off field distraction.
Vladimir Guererro - 2010 AL MVP
Yeah that is actually how it starts
It’s there. Someone offers. You try it. And there you are.
Cocaine in moderation probably isn’t what you think it is. Unless there’s reason to believe Wash is a consistent user this isn’t a big deal. It’s his private life. Some drink. Some eat like pigs. Some have fucked up kinky sex. People are people, man.
I happen to agree with you that drugs are dumb. For ME. Lots of my friends still indulge from time to time but it’s not my place to tell them how to live their lives.

mid 30s here (almost late 30's, yeesh)
and I’ve seen more shit in my life than I care to talk about. It didn’t take me long to realize how important life was as I watched buddy after buddy throw his or her life away to alcohol, coke, heroin, meth or any combination therein. After realizing how dangerously close I was to doing the same thing….
I don’t believe it was a one-time thing for Wash, but that really doesn’t matter. It really, really doesn’t.
The easy way out of this would be for the Rangers to castigate him or just fire him and move on. No one would really blame them… how can you keep a guy as your manager after he got busted doing coke for cryin-out-loud???
Except, that’s exactly what the Rangers have done. They’ve decided to accept that we’re all fallible, that we all have moments of weakness and sometimes, just sometimes, we fuck up and do something stupid.
It probably makes more business sense for the Rangers to fire his ass. Except, they’re choosing to take the human element into account and give a guy that they have a lot of feelings for another chance.
I don’t know that I agree with them from a business standpoint, and I don’t even think Wash is all that good of a manager. However, I do know I admire the hell out of Nolan, JD and anyone else involved in the decision to keep Wash for giving him a second chance. Whatever demons or issues Wash may have with this, hopefully he’s able to work through them — but right here and right now I’m damn proud that men like Nolan Ryan and John Daniels are running the baseball team that I care so much about. I wouldn’t want it any other way.

This "older and experienced" bit is pure unadulterated bullshit.
There is no magic age that makes human beings to bright to make bad decisions. People of all ages make poor choices. And you’re making some grand assumptions with absolutely zero supporting evidence. You want to look at this like Wash is some kind of flaming coke addict when the actual evidence strongly suggests otherwise. He failed one test. People who are regular users and are subject to testing don’t fail only one test, especially when they’re required to piss three times per week after their first dirty UA. For a guy as sure of his own opinion as you are, you know jack shit about this topic.
The evidence currently on hand suggests that Wash made a dumb decision one night during the season, that’s it. Is it reasonable to infer that he’s probably dabbled in the past? Sure. Believe it or not, there are recreational controlled substance users just like there are recreational drinkers and smokers. The people in the best position to know the facts made a decision last season, and presumably again in the offseason, that Wash didn’t have a drug problem and should stay on as manager. That happens in real life every day although with folks who like to see people punished unmercifully for their flaws such a result is never acceptable. Given the obvious state of your attitude about this whole situation, I’d say you’re not nearly as grown up and life experienced as you seem to believe you are. Life is imperfect. People are imperfect. You’re living proof of that. Get over yourself.

So anybody that's done a controlled substance is a "spare" in your world?
You don’t care much for human beings, do you? Somehow, I’ll bet you’ve never turned that judgmental eye in your own direction, or if you did there was always some easy explanation that justified your flaws in your own tortured reasoning. That is sad, Josey. Really sad.

2 thoughts on this subject
1. I have to take Wash at his word that he is complying with Ranger/MLB decisions about testing to prove he is drug free. But it should only be a 1 time deal (unlike how Strawberry and Howe were handled).
2. Josey proves once that he is a complete douchebag. What Wash and La Russa are wrong. Illegal is illegal. He just wants to use any reason to fire Wash, regardless of the FACT that this team has improved every year since he was hired. Especially on the defensive side.

TLR was in his 60s, had busted his ass all day on the field (because it was ST),
had gone out to dinner and had what amounted to 4 glasses of wine (.092).
Yes, he screwed up by getting behind the wheel of his car but what he did is nowhere close to what Wash did.
I am a grizzled drinker and can drink a boatload of beer if the occasion requires but I can’t drink more than 2 glasses of red wine because it makes me really tired.

Here again, you're showing your lack of knowledge.
If he blew a .092, he was likely higher when he was actually driving. He would have had to imbibe at least 5 standard doses of alcohol over about an hour to achieve that result. If he was drinking for more than an hour, he probably had 6 or more drinks to end up with a BAC that high. The body absorbs alcohol faster than it gets it out of your system. I’m not saying LaRussa is a bad guy, but lets not underestimate how much he had to drink to reach the result you’re so proud of.

…but I’m surprised they didn’t can him. I know of no other job which you can keep after testing positive for cocaine. Maybe there are some but I’ve had friends fired from good jobs for lesser substance abuse shit.
I’m glad they didn’t fire him, though. It’s really not that big of a deal if you ask me. If he had a habit that would be a different story all together, but who really cares about recreational drug use? I don’t use any drugs anymore but if that’s someone’s idea of a good time, fine with me.
I don’t really understand why this was even made public.
please folks
Can we please stop comparing being a Major League Baseball Manager to real life jobs/positions where if you get caught with drugs in your system you get fired? Its Sports, its not being a long haul truck driver, its not being in law enforcement, its not inherently affecting the livelihood of anyone, so he is not held to the same standard. That anaolgy just doesn’t work for me

THIS dude straight came out and told on himself before knowing whether he was going to get caught or not. Being that I usually always come out seeing the good in people I have no choice but to believe this was his only time. I will now root for ronwash and not against him. I hope this does bring the team together
Meh
I find the idea of MLB testing for recreational drugs stupid, Who cares.
That said, I think it is pretty naive to give him much credit for coming forward. i remember everybody heaping praise on Aaron Boone a few years back for his ‘honesty" in “confessing” after he hurt his knee playing basketball w/ 9 other dudes. Come on, that’s what any halfway intelligent person would do. That story was getting out one way or the other.
Wash got caught flat footed on a urinalysis. He knew he was dirty. So he spoke up before the results that he knew would screw him came in. Obviously, that’s better than doing nothing, but it is hardly praiseworthy. Does a husband who catted around on his wife deserve credit for his honesty when he “tells on himself” that he got the clap?
