According to JD

A few of the leaders were told early this morning, and MY was one. The rest of the players found out at an all hands on deck team meeting, which included all coaches, scouts, club personnel, etc as was present in AZ.

Reassignments from The Newberg
The Rangers have optioned righthanders Omar Poveda (out for the season) and Omar Beltre and lefthander Zach Phillips to Frisco, and have assigned the following non-roster players to minor league camp: lefthanders Kasey Kiker and Clay Rapada, catcher Emerson Frostad, and infielder Marcus Lemon. No surprises in the bunch (while not surprising, it’s interesting that the club wants to see some more of righthander Alexi Ogando before sending him out on option).

You're not upset about this at all?

I’m not doing my Hellen Lovejoy or making secret plans to douse him in pig’s blood (or am I? … Mua ha ha! ), but the idea that the man directly in charge of the day to day operations of such a large and expensive operation was doing blow doesn’t trouble you at all?

Again, I’m not outraged or even all that pissed about this (I’m the Jirkatron… I’m always a little angry… it’s in my nature), but it does concern me.

the idea that the man directly in charge of the day to day operations of such a large and expensive operation was doing blow doesn’t trouble you at all?

I would wager that there are quite a few folks out there in the world who are directly in charge of the day to day operations of a large and expensive operation who use cocaine from time to time.

by Adam J. Morris on Mar 17, 2010 7:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes, indeed. I didn't mean to imply that recreational drug use precludes someone from being good at their job.

However, the hypothetical folks you mention here… Are they subject to random drug testing, though?

Wash did know he was subject to that beforehand, right?

Doesn’t that make the decision a whole fuck of a lot more troubling?

What that says about his decision making process troubles me a fuck of a lot more than the simple fact that he did some blow.

I’ve never done a drug in my life (disregarding alcahol, naturally), but that’s a personal choice rather than some puritanical demonization of drug use.

Pretty much every single person I’ve ever dated or been friends with has either done drugs or had done them in the past. I tend to think the impact of recreationally using most “light” drugs is much less than we make it out to be.

So, yah.

Not sure if I’m saying this right… but the fact that he did coke is dissapointing.

The fact that he chose to do it given the particulars of the position that he’s in… That’s the much more troubling thing, imo.

(Well that and the fact that I have serious, serious doubts about his “Only time” statment. No way a near-60 year old dude just up and does coke for the first time… The odds of that have got to be pretty astronimical.)

The one time thing.

I’m curious to know more about just how accurately a medical examination can reveal how much cocain a person has consumed. The idea that the Rangers waited until the conclusion of the medical examination before refusing his resignation interests me.

My first take was along the same line; I had very, very little faith in the idea that this could possibly be a one time thing. But I’d be interested in knowing more about the examination and how reliable its findings are.

And fwiw, even if it wasn’t a one time thing, it’s very unlikely that he was addicted or even a habitual user. Otherwise his transition into being tested three times a week and perhaps withdrawing to some extent would have been something that people around the team might have noticed, no?

I honestly could have cared less

about his drug use, because, as Adam says, there are lots of folks in charge of operations being coked up, and coked up VPs of Sales aren’t exactly uncommon.

My only issue is the Hamilton issue. Failing a coke test after Hamilton’s falling off the wagon really doesn’t sit well with me.

Now...

We will get to hear all about how the Rangers are an immoral and crappy franchise for not firing Washington. People will start bringing up Hamilton’s past drug problems and his alcohol lapse spring. They will point out Kenny Roger’s incident with the reporter and Frankie throwing the chair into the stands. Every little incident in the last 10 to 15 years we will be brought up in effort to prove that the Rangers are an undisciplined franchise. Get ready, the Rangers will now be considered the Cincinnati Bengals of MLB just because of the transgressions of a people. I am sure that similar situations have occurred with other franchises, just the Ranger’s management actually comes out and admits it. Hopefully, the team will use this as motivation.

Well if they get a nickname

it won’t be like the franchise doesn’t deserve it.

The biggest difference was the Rangers got caught. The Rangers management shouldn’t get bonus points for coming out and admitting it. Given the timing, its a fair bet they are just trying to get it out there before it got reported anyway.

I think those rallies had more to do with the players and positive regression than it has to do with Ron “firing up the troops”. The guy is a poor baseball manager who knows little to nothing about the strategics of the game. Which really doesn’t make him that much different that 90% of the other managers out there, I guess – but it shocks me that the bastard can get away with being shitty at his job and snorting coke.
