Thursday morning Rangers things

First off, the collection of Ron Washington opinions:

Tim Cowlishaw doesn't think that he will be manager for much longer.
Randy Galloway tells the story of a team employee who tried to blackmail the club.
JJT believes Washington should have been fired.
Evan Grant says that Chuck Greenberg had been made aware of the situation.
Richard Durrett talks with Michael Young about the club's leadership in the clubhouse.

TR Sullivan looks at Scott Feldman after his solid start and says that he's one pitcher that the club doesn't have to worry about. I must admit, I have been having a few visions of the top two in the rotation not living up to expectations, so even though it was just another spring training game, it was nice to see Feldman do well.

Durrett also has his notes from Wednesday in Surprise.

The Rangers have let go three long-time employees: veteran scouts Mel Didier and Jay Robertson and equipment manager Zack Minasian.

Doesnt it have to be Minasian?

No one really understood why he got “fired” or “let go” back at the end of ’09. They restructured the scouting department but doesnt it have to be Zach? Remind me if there was any news about “why” he was being pushed out of the club house? And of all people, he would be the one around Wash and the team to hear it from underneath a closed door.

Primarily responsible for moving the equipment while on the road? Its a lot more likely that it was him than a couple of scouts who probably don’t spend much time with the team anyway. (of course, a scout could have observed him at a party or something).

They asked Bobby Valentine how this might change the rangers clubhouse, and he said “well i had heard they were changing the clubhouse chemistry when they let go the 22 year manager….” before starting in on Washington.

I don’t want to speculate too much about a guy who could very easily have absolutely nothing to do with this, but I can see a scenario or two where all the pieces of the story would fit..

I wish RG would just say who he is accusing here so that we wouldn’t have to speculate, but thats never how things work…

Maybe he got seen coming out of a rehab session or something and the rumor mill got started?

I have a feeling guys like Wash or Michael Young could walk into a church with an AK-47, kill 50 people and get off scott-free if they made heartfelt apologies.

What I think happened is that Disgruntled Employee

may have been let go because he had a long, shall we say 22 year history of being loose lipped. He may also have been somehow privy to knowing Wash failed the drug test and may have mentioned it to a few players in passing.

The team plays distracted in September.

Disgruntled Employee is let go but makes it known he wants some things done for him (not financially) or he’s gonna blow the lid on this little secret.

So Legal Minds, if he wasn’t demanding anything financial, is that technically blackmail?

I think Wash would have been on a shorter leash if coke-gate hadn’t happened. Now, it they fire him at the first sign of trouble they look bad because they said they’re standing behind him. They’re going to have to stick with him for the whole year now, unless things get really bad.

Cowlishaw is usually wrong on things.

He starts out saying he thinks Wash should be fired for drug use, shifts to a position that if he had a winning history, it would be less offensive and more tolerated and then meanders in a direction where he cites W-L’s as the determining factor on Wash’s job security. Which is it Tim? Does Wash’s longevity hinge on the drug use discovery or on the team’s performance? If the latter, why in hell did you even bother to write a column? Everybody already knows that a manager’s job hinges on how well his team does. That’s not front page news.

by twinkilling on Mar 18, 2010 9:20 AM CDT up reply actions

I think RW is on a very short leash. Look at the guy they hired to be his hitting coach.

In fact, I think has to be a Disney season for RW to keep his job. They have to be in contention until the very last day, if they don’t win, in order to keep RW around. Why would they want a manager who took coke and who didn’t lead the team to a division title when they are trying to rebuild their fanbase?

To win the division, it’s going to take contributions from young pitchers when injuries arise, at least league average production from Borbon, big bouncebacks from Hamilton/Davis, and a SP rotation that builds on last year’s success by increasing their K/9 while maintaining a low BB/9. That’s a lot to ask.

I see no reason RW would be on anything but a very short leash. It would take 2 seconds for Hurdle to step in and be in control of the clubhouse. He already has the respect of the hitters.

I partly agree with what you're saying,

And since Wash’s first year here I’ve wanted him gone because he’s a bad in-game manager and makes bad pitching choices. My point is, now that Nolan and JD and Co. have given him this vote of confidence, if at the first sign of trouble they turn around and boot him they’ll look two-faced.

Ron Washington is fine for now. If we win, he stays. If we lose with this team, especially after Chuck takes ownership and we make any necessary trades/add payroll, he’s gone. No matter what.

Now…if he cokes up again, he’s probably gone then, too. And surprise – we have Hurdle waiting. Which is a nice backup plan, but I think we hired him for one reason and one reason only – to improve the OBP and situational hitting of this ballclub.

One thing about Minasian

I knew about the Larry Walker/Ian Kinsler & Erik Thompson trade well before it became public from a friend of one of Minasian’s boys. So when it comes to juicy rumors, I know that there is at least some sort of history of them not being extremely tight lipped. Now, that’s a whole different deal from trying to gain concessions from the club based on your knowledge.

showed up at the clubhouse…The team was in So Cal and then went to Seattle.

I think it was somebody who may have been with Wash the night he did it or at least knew what he did and where he had been and then saw MLB show up a couple of days later.

Maybe that person was with Wash the night he was coked up, saw an opportunity to blackmail and then called MLB himself….seriously, what are the odds that MLB would show up with a cup within a couple of days of Wash doing this?

Josh pics come out in early August, whip cream, road-beef, hat on backwards and telling the world he’s number one.

They find out they can’t sign Purke.

I remember that last game when they were playing Oakland in September when it was the 9th inning, raining and the team was about to be shut out yet again (5 games/one run scored). Nolan sat there in the rain sans umbrella (tough guys don’t do umbrellas) with this look on his face that could kill.

Right...

…but what does it being natural have to do with anything? Sorry, this is a pet peeve of mine. Almost everything is natural, or was at one point. Is taking insulin natural? It originally comes from humans, but now they make it in bacteria to for diabetics. Most drugs originally came from natural sources and now it’s just more profitable to make them synthetically (for a lot of them).

My point is this…it doesn’t matter whether it’s natural or not. What matters is how effective it is and how bad the side effects are.

its not always that specific.

It all depends on the purpose of the drug. for example: the side effect of antihistimines containing diphenhydromine is drowsiness, but the effect of sleep aids containing diphenhydromine is drowsiness. Same active ingredient.

Yeah...

…I was trying to point out that there is a difference. Also, there’s plenty of examples (like the one you mentioned) of drugs being approved for a second disease/illness or being used for a secondary issue even if it’s not technically approved by the FDA. It’s seen a lot in neuro/psych drugs.

My favorite example of this is Viagra. It was developed as a blood pressure medication, but when it got to clinical trials, it wasn’t that effective. However, there was this curious side effect that almost every man noticed….

The effect is a depressant.

There’s some argument on the specific neurotransmitters involved, but especially peripherally it is a depressant. That’s why very drunk people have lower heart rate, deep respirations, etc. It also lowers inhibitions, which is what causes most of the effects of drunkeness that we think of (being loud, driving too fast/riskily, doing karaoke).

The chronic side effects involve the brain increasing its stimulating signals to try to overcome the constant depressant signals that the alcoholic gives it. When the person stops drinking, this is why everything from increased heart rate to tremors are seen.

I can see the benefit in theory, but I think that it’s way overblown. I’d be much more concerned about getting people to eat more fruits and vegetables than making sure that the type they eat are local, organically grown fruits and vegetables.

On the other hand

the food processors do have some history of creating things in the lab like trans-fats which help from a shipping and handling standpoint, but don’t help the body so much. I doubt there is all that much testing on most preservatives or food coloring agents.

Quite frankly, no food processor can afford to do the testing you’d need to see if an artificial ingredient breaks down well in the body.

With thinks like most fruits and vegetables, we have thousands of years of practice and we have a pretty good idea what they are going to do, which is why you recommend them.

if you have any underlying negativity, that could surface and cause massive unpleasantness, also, make sure you get plenty of sleep before hand, because it’s both mentally, emotionally, and physically draining. It’s up in the air on whether you should eat first; i’ve had different experiences with it, but i usually only have a light, healthy lunch before hand; also, i would say prepare to throw up, don’t expect it, because it doesn’t always happen, but don’t fight it if you need to

Yep. It becomes evident very quickly in a substance abuse program whether someone is addicted.

RW’s proactive posture with MLB and JD/Ryan gave him a chance, and the fact the he wasn’t an addict probably gave JD/Ryan the room to continue to gamble on RW.

I imagine Wash used it recreationally....maybe 8-10 times per year. He was on some Dodger teams that had major problems in the late 70s.

If he was an addict, that would have been evident and played itself out long before last July.

I also think Oakland must have had their own suspicions on Wash as well which is why they didn’t hire him. Not enough to fire him from the team but they probably saw him as a not so bright but well liked “Good Time Charlie” who seemed to be a good 3B coach.

The vast majority of us cross that bridge by the time we’re 30-35 years old. The reason we cross that bridge is because we know that river will either drown us or F up our lives in a terrible way.

This was ALL on Wash and there is not a viable excuse for doing this…especially at 57 years of age. It wasn’t his first time – period.

Now, there is a small loophole there, it could be that he was a very casual user. No signs of chronic abuse, less risk of failing the once a year drug test, plus relatively easy recovery.

I think this is going to blow up big

Last night I’m watching MLB Network, and it all clicked. The news today just confirms it.

Nolan and JD, with the help of MLB, completely covered this up. Something that would inevitably come out in the future at some point.

What I don’t understand is why. Even if they didn’t want to disturb the pennant race, why don’t they just announce it after the season? Pre-emptively head off any breaking news? Surely JD and Nolan weren’t naive to think that it’d never come out – especially with a blackmailer?

So I think something else is going on. JD and Nolan look like idiots right now for covering this up and having it leak right before the season. These aren’t guys who make habits of stupid decisions like that – they’ve been up front and acted on guys like Sidney Ponson. Why stick their necks out so far for Wash, who hasn’t been winning pennants or anyhting? Yeah, yeah, they’re compassionate, whatever. I don’t think they do this unless they were worried something else would come out also. Something that really is bad news for this organization.

So now I’m worried.

That last paragraph is a really good point

Why the hell does Wash get a free pass and Padilla and Ponson get shown the door? He brings far less to the club than either of them did.

I don’t think the entire thing was some big coverup, as they where bound by the confidentiality agreement – but I definitely agree, that based on their actions in regards to other guys who had off-field issues while here they definitely should’ve canned Ron last year. It’s too late to do it now, but from the standpoint of how it reflects upon the team and the supposed “zero tolerance of BS” image they’ve worked so hard to build, it’s pretty inexplicable that he was not at least fired at the conclusion of last season.

If you can't publicly say you fired him for the cocaine thing due to confidentiality reasons

What reasons are you gonna give when he took this young team to a 87 win season? You can’t just fire the manager and act like it never happened. You have to cite some reason and if you can’t cite the correct one then you have to have some other plausible reason or people start asking questions.

You have to cite some reason and if you can’t cite the correct one then you have to have some other plausible reason or people start asking questions.

No, you don’t. Prime example: Elijah Dukes. Just got canned by the Nats for no apparently public reason. There’s obviously something going on behind the scenes there that we aren’t privy to, but the Nats aren’t saying what. They don’t have to. They’re a fucking major league baseball team, they don’t report to the media or the public.

Wash should’ve been canned sometime last year, bottom line. Not doing so is inconsistent with the Rangers past approaches to other off-field incidents and the image they where working on as baseballs “good guys”. You could also argue it suggests favoritism and it most certainly left the club wide open to a great deal of nationwide blowback over this entire thing.

In my opinion it was an inexplicably unsound management decision, one that hurt the ballclub. JD, Nolan and whoever else deserve to take some hits here.

on the inconsistent comment. MLB doctors said this was a one time incident. Padilla and Ponson had long histories of their “trangressions”.

It’s not like Ron Washington is Joe Torre over there in the dugout…

Hate to say it, but I’m with LSJ on this one. The Rangers played favorites and left themselves exposed to a great deal of media fallout on this issue. You can defend that by saying it shouldn’t have come out, b/c of the confidentiality thing but I think that’s missing the point.

If this organization is supposed to be so concerned with solidarity, they need to walk the walk.

by JimBonnick84 on Mar 18, 2010 10:22 AM CDT up reply actions

What, because Wash didn't lie about it that makes it all better?

He was caught red-handed, and he new it. So he performed preemptive damage control, which speaks more to his intelligence than his solidarity IMO.

by JimBonnick84 on Mar 18, 2010 10:27 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm not apologizing for Wash...

Given that Ron was going to get busted for cocaine use, and given the restrictions on the various players in the soap opera, I can understand the sequence of decisions that were made. I may not agree with all of them, but I can understand. There aren’t any great options, and that is Ron’s fault for putting everyone in this situation.

The solidarity I’m referring to is the fact that the entire org seems to be in Ron’s corner right now. I don’t know what the hell you’re talking about regarding Ron’s solidarity since one man can’t represent solidarity. It takes a group.

by bhudson on Mar 18, 2010 10:47 AM CDT up reply actions

Perhaps solidarity was the wrong word then

If you really want to get into semantics.

What I’m saying is I think it reflects poorly on the organization that they would give Wash a mulligan on coke usage, yet crucify guys like Padilla and Ponson for similar (and in Padilla’s case, lesser) offenses.

I’m not defending Padilla or Sir Sidney here, but I think that shows a double standard to the rest of baseball that basically makes the Texas Rangers look like an exclusive club of idealistic snobs who don’t practice what they preach if the offender is one of their inner circle.

by JimBonnick84 on Mar 18, 2010 10:56 AM CDT up reply actions

Both those guys had reputations prior to coming here

And their actions were not hidden like Wash’s was.

Hell the players didn’t know about Wash’s stuff till yesterday. Releasing Padilla and Ponson was about keeping the clubhouse chemistry intact and not having any bad seeds in it.

With Wash keeping his transgressions so under the radar they didn’t affect that chemistry and you could argue that firing the manager midway through a season where we are at or near first place would have had a worse impact on the clubhouse than Padilla or Ponson could have.

by bigsteve on Mar 18, 2010 10:59 AM CDT up reply actions

So fire him after the season is over.

Say that the club is going in a different direction, and lump Ron in with Rudy J if you have to. I’m sure they could’ve come up with some line to feed the media to avoid raising too many eyebrows while complying with confidentiality agreement.

That’s all they had to do to avoid starting the year by being embarrassed on the front page of ESPN.

I don't think that was a possibility

The offense tanked last year. That falls on the hitting coach. But the team overall did pretty damn good despite the offense tanking. You just can’t fire a manager after a 87 win season where his offense does what ours did last year and not raise eyebrows.

Especially when over the previous couple seasons ownership had publicly stated their support for Wash.

Florida canned Girardi after a successful season but they had laid the foundation for that well ahead of time by publicly saying they didn’t like how he did things and such. If Hicks and JD and Nolan had been coming out all season saying we were doing so well in spite of Wash then maybe they would have had a out they could have used. But by publicly supporting him all season and even back into 2008 they didn’t open the door to simply “go another direction”

What about the team's collapse in September, when it was make or break time?

You’re making this out to be far too complicated, I think. There’s always a nit that can be picked of you need to can somebody in sports, and it’s not like Wash was that great of an on-field manager.

Eyebrows would’ve been raised, sure, but that’s about all.

by JimBonnick84 on Mar 18, 2010 11:15 AM CDT up reply actions

That sucked sure

But by then you were too far into it. if you were going to fire him you had to do it right away and at the time it wasn’t a pretty scenario to do so.

Personally I blame mother nature for the September collapse by washing away all our momentum with a 3 day rainout but thats not the point.

If they didn’t fire Wash right away they either had to hope the team collapses, and I mean really collapses, down the stretch ending with a .500 or worse record or they had to essentially hope this news didn’t get out and they could either find legit cause to fire him during the 2010 season or simply not renew his contract and let him walk afterwards.

First of all Dukes is a player. teams cut players all the time without saying what the exact reasons are. And with Dukes he isn’t exactly coming off a .300 25 HR season. He had a bad year last year so while everyone hypothesizes its personal reasons or off the field stuff all Washington has to say is he was a bad player last year and we have plenty of other OF options.

With Washington hes a manager. Anytime a manager gets canned its news. And a manager whos coming off a 87 win season with such a young team and 2 straight seasons improving the win total is going to peak peoples curiosity.

As bad as this is right now looking like a coverup it would be worse PR wise had they fired him and given some bullshit reason and then some reporter uncovers the real reason.

Im not necessarily for them keeping him after this incident but they handled it about as well as they could IMO

Isn't assuming a story this big will never hit the public

kind of dumb?

I mean, maybe it isn’t. Maybe half of MLB has tested positive once, and we just don’t know about it.

But really, you’re now testing Wash every three days instead of once a year. Wouldn’t someone notice that? You have who knows who at MLB, the top of the Rangers organization, and whoever Wash was with at the time knowing this as well. And this isn’t a small deal – someone, somewhere, sometime, is going to love to have this as ammo against the bosses – and it looks like that happened.

To me, the best move would have been, if the team really wanted to keep Wash, to tell him in July – “Look, we aren’t going to fire you over this, though we should. But here’s the deal. November 1st, when people stop caring about baseball, you’re going to give a press conference and fess up. Because we don’t want this hitting the fan IN THE MIDDLE OF SPRING TRAINING”

I think the blowing up yesterday

is as big as it is going to get. At some point, if Ron isn’t extended, this event will be a factor, but I think that’s the extent of where this is going.

I also disagree that there was a cover-up; with the requirements of confidentiality, what would you have had them do differently? It’s not a cover-up if they’re not allowed to disclose anything. Even if they had accepted his resignation, it would have been awkward because the team was in first place and they wouldn’t have been able to explain anything.

BBTiA has a very good story about this that is a good take.

Scheppers arguably already has one of the best fastballs, curveballs and sliders in the organization. Has he even unpacked his bags yet? One source told me “I would bet everything in my checking account that he’s going to be a superstar.” Now it’s just a matter of when

by tyd3311 on Mar 18, 2010 10:49 AM CDT reply actions

Oh I'm excited about this one

some may disagree, but I truly think we ended up with the better pitcher in Scheppers – and it was the plan all along that we may not have ended up with Purke and wanted more of a sure thing (health aside).

Depending on what we get with the Purke pick next year, this could be a very rewarding combination of picks.

"Best Case Scenario"

but even though Nolan might’ve had wishful thinking that it was a lock to sign Purke, you had to get the feeling that Hicks, Daniels, and a few others had the idea that he may not sign and we’d get a compensation pick next year worst case scenario; either way, with that thinking, I think that’s why we said “screw the supposedly high contract demands from Scheppers” and drafted him 44th or wherever; we knew we were getting a top 10 arm if not better with that pick at MUCH lower than Purke money.

I know Perez is younger and all, but I'm becoming convinced Scheppers and Perez are on the same level of potential impact, and Scheppers

may be slightly ahead of Perez by virtue of having more evil stuff that is more fully developed. IOW, there is less projection to Scheppers. The only reason I would even say they are on the same level is Scheppers’ injury history; otherwise, I think Scheppers is the better short-term and long-term prospect.

I’m really just splitting hairs here. Who cares which of the two is the better prospect, since they are both clearly have high impact potential.

I think Callis is going to have to add Scheppers to his list of potential aces in the minors.

Perez could have it all. Scheppers appears to be much closer to having it all.

Age and injury history makes Perez the better prospect, but Scheppers has as much chance as Perez at this point to have a long, high impact ML career by virtue of being much more advanced.

I am much more convinced that if Scheppers stays healthy, which is a significant “if” – that he will for sure be a top 10 starter or a top reliever in this league. I think Perez could still fail with injury or just not having “it” at the big league level…although I’m not counting on it or hoping for it, obviously.

If CJ is in the rotation and Feliz, Holland and Harrison go to AAA,

pen: Frankie, Oliver, O’Day, Ray, BMac, Nippert, Ogando

Maybe Mendoza over Ogando?

Ogando: No

If CJ is in the rotation and Feliz is in AAA, then they’re comfortable with Ray.

The pitching staff is on the trajectory to be the following:
Harden, Feldman, Lewis, CJ, Hunter
BMac, Nippert, Harrison, O’Day, Ray, Oliver, frankfranKKKKK

AAA would be fronted by Feliz and Holland and also have Kiker, Moscosco, and maybe Mathis. Mendoza is going to be traded, unless they decide to put him in the ML pen rather than Harrison.

well out of the following names...

CJ, Feliz, Holland, Harrison, McCarthy, one of them will be in the rotation with the 4 we basically know; add Frankie, Oliver, O’Day, Nippert and if healthy, Ray to the bullpen; that leaves two slots for the non-starter of CJ, Feliz, Holland, Harrison and B-Mac.

As of now, I’d handicap a dead tie between CJ and Harrison for the 5th starter slot, with Holland still capable of making up the ground; Feliz is out; I think he takes one of the other 2 bullpen slots; and B-Mac is out, and is either the 7th bullpen arm or is traded.

So that leaves CJ, Harrison and Holland. If CJ isn’t in the rotation, he’s in the bullpen – removing either McCarthy or Feliz. I’d say Feliz. But I’d rather have Feliz in the pen. If CJ is in the rotation, I think it’s a tossup between Holland, Harrison, or one of the lefties we picked up (Snyder, “other dude”) as to who the 6th bullpen arm is.

Either way, I don’t think there’s much of a chance that Feliz, Holland AND Harrison are all in AAA.

There is a bit of misinformation out there and that is cocaine is out of your system in 2-3 days. Well while that might be true LABS DON’T TEST FOR THE DRUG ITSELF. Yes, that is true, they look for the metabolite. A metabolite is something that the body produces when it ingests something, in the case of cocaine it is “benzoylecgonine” that will stay around long after the drug is gone, up to 30 days for a frequent user. THE DRUG ITSELF can stay in your bloodstream up to 72 hours. It can stay in your urine for about 1 or up to 3 days after single use. Habitual or chronic use can be detected in urine for up to 12 weeks depending on quantity, duration, and frequency of use.

Cocaine can stay in your hair up to about 90 days. But there are also information that cocaine can stay in your hair for about 25 years after you only take it once.

If they test once a season, it’s reasonable to assume he’d’ve had reason to be afraid of a positive if they’d tested him anytime within a month of his arctic expedition.

I don’t know how huge of a stretch that is.

The season’s only 7-8 months long, so there’s as good as a 1 in 7 chance the test could’ve randomly happened to catch him at a time when he’d’ve tested positive, and actually much higher when you establish that it was already July by the time this had happened, right?

The 40 Trumps All!!!

by thedirkatron on Mar 19, 2010 7:42 AM CDT up reply actions

The fact that supposedly he passed subsequent drug tests three times a week the rest of the season lends credence to the "one time" story being told

Because as that blurb states if he was habitual the drug could stay in your urine for up to 12 weeks and the metabolite for a month.

I lean toward the theory that he has done cocaine in the past or maybe does it 2 or 3 times a year and somehow he was talked into it out in California on a road trip. I imagine the next day he realized he had fucked up and when the testers showed up it really hit him and he went in and informed JD and Nolan he would piss hot.

actually, they are

First positive test is treatment and increased testing (unless its a PED, then its an immediate 50 game suspension). since 2008, that’s been true of players, coaches and managers.

cool, thanks for the info

doesn’t it seem like there should be an immediate punishment when you’re caught for this sort of thing? i mean, why would a coach get suspended 50 games for using PEDs since he can’t actually contribute to the win total of his team, but he can get caught using cocaine and get a slap on the wrist?

Cocaine isn't a PED

oddly, Amphetamines are, though meth may not be. there’s a fuzzy line there between performance enhancing and recreational drugs. Danny G has been suspended for 50 games for taking Adderal, which my son once took for ADHD. (gave him hallucinations so he stopped quickly, but not before telling a judge about shadowy figures hiding in the court room…. long story). The problem is that Guttierez didn’t get an ADHD waiver from the league for them, so he’s suspended.

PED’s are the hot topic of the day, hence the automatic suspension.

Cocaine and amphetamines are just different.

Amphetamines work (in the brain) by increasing the release of dopamine and a few other neurotransmitters to a lesser degree. Though if somebody overdoses on amphetamines, they’re given a dopamine blocker mainly. The reason it’s used as a therapy is because at low doses (or weaker versions of the drug), you can control distractability, etc. However, if you take it and you don’t have any decreased amount of neurotransmitter release, you’re more likely to experience the the opposite. People who take them as a drug are taking much higher doses (or in the case of meth, a much more potent form) so they get the second set of symptoms that may have a lot to do with receptors involved with the norepinephrine (adrenaline) response.

Cocaine has similar symptoms to the second set of symptoms of amphetamines, but works in a bit of a different way. It prevents norepinephrine from being cleared from a synapse, similar to the way older antidepressants worked (but more potent) and that’s why you get the ‘side effects’ of an adrenaline rush.

and trying to manage a game? Doubtful.

Do I think he went on a coke bender the night after a game and was probably feeling the effects of very little sleep in one of those games v. the Angels or M’s? Yeah.

The Rangers were playing well at this time. Hank F was playing every day and Davis was back down in OKC. The Rangers went something like 17-8 in July so their manager’s coke problem wasn’t hurting the team but that’s not really the issue.

You simply cannot have a manager whose job it is to lead, be respected and make thousands of decisions before and during the course of a game.

That has nothing to do with race and much more to do with how you classify the offenses.

What?

You can’t use the lack of consequences in La Russa’s case if you’re not going to concede that at the very least you don’t know the consequences of Washington’s.

The harm is getting in the car loaded.

And it has nothing to do with how you classify the offenses if your point is that leaders don’t do this shit.

Perceived leaders shouldn't do these things

but the offenses are classified differently and it has absolutely nothing to do with the colors of their skin.

If Wade was at training camp and drove home one night with a few under his belt and took a dui, he’d probably keep his job, provided nobody was hurt and that he blew a .092.

If Wade goes on a bender in the middle of the season the day of or the evening before an important game v Philly or NY, his fat ass is gonna get fired.

that some of the players knew about Wash’s coke problem last September.

One of the great things about baseball is that you can’t hide dysfunction on the team. If it’s bad enough, you will see it between the lines.

Hmmmmm, this team crash landed in their last 23 games, going 8-15 and also had a 1 run in 5 game streak at the most important time of the year.

I wonder if a certain loose lipped clubhouse man told some of the players and paid for it with his job?

bad link

but i found the article. I also found Ringolsby’s article. He’s a former DMN columnist who was traded to Denver for much more than he was worth (re: nothing).

Both articles share something. They are both utter crap. Complete trash. Not worth the paper, hell, not worth the electricity used to display the image on the screen, and certainly not worth my time.

Sensationalism and undocumented inuendo. Fire Washington. That’s all they say. That quote about the players knowing about it? I don’t believe it for a second. The actual cquote says that several players weren’t surprised about the announcement and had known about his rehab since september. While its possible, I don’t believe it. MLB is pretty tight lipped about it and no one else has a reason to tell the team. In fact, Washington was probably under orders NOT to tell the team. Now, as far as “surprised”? drug use is no longer a surprise to anyone. I wouldn’t be surprised if my 75 year old father smoked a doobie. Or my 71 year old mother dropped acid.

Use of recreational drugs has become so widespread a phenomena, so pervasive, it reaches across age gaps, gender, race, creed, sexual orientation, nationality, etc. Only the punishments differ. In Europe, drug users are given clean needles and healthcare. In China, drug users are imprisoned and executed. And different drugs are legal in different countries.

Josey’s bitching about using cocaine on a game day is about as stupid as any other thing he bitches about. If Wash had gone out and gotten drunk after a game and was still hung over the next night, then would that be any different? Not one game of that west coast trip started before 7 pm local time, plenty of time to be clean and sober from most benders. Having watched all of those games, I could easily tell you if Wash’s behavior changed during that trip. It didn’t. But don’t take my word for it. Ask the team…. Ask Lewin and Grieve…. If Wash was high during a game, or strung out from being high the night before, ONE OF THEM WOULD HAVE NOTICED. You can’t hide that crap.

So, either it happened during the ASB (which is possible) or it was so little coke that it didn’t do more than give him a light buzz and that was that.

As far as it being his one and only time? Well, if he did find out he was going to have to take a drug test the next day, that’ kinda puts a kibosh on future usage. And if he did it before that day, don’t you think someone might have noticed?

You are perfectly willing to believe that RG made up his story about the blackmail.

As far as Wash’s treatments distracting players, you don’t think the 3 day rainout and 3 September double headers might have been a bit more deliterious?

Or maybe Michael Youngs injury?

Of course you keep talking about that stretch of 5 games with one run scored, but during that stretch they lost a grand total of 2 games in the standings (9/13 through 9/18), and one of those was because the Angels delivered the final shutout on the 18th. (it does include the 7-2 win in the first game of the doubleheader on Sunday the 13th.

Face it, Josey, you don’t care if Washington is high on Coke or high on life, or anything. You want him fired, and you are looking for any reason possible to get him fired.

Oh my god! What can it be? We're all doomed! Who's flying this thing?

RG has nothing to gain by making up a story

like this and I made it a point to say I’m speculating on why the team played so poorly in September.

Yes, I wanted Washington fired in the past because I always thought he was dumb.

Risking his career and going on another cocaine bender (this wasn’t his first time) during the season when the Rangers were playing their most important games to date, further confirms exactly how stupid he is.

Interesting

Evan Grant gets a quote from Jon Daniels to throw Randy Galloway under the bus. And follows it up with an ambiguous one from Ryan.

I hate to say it, but I’m not convinced about Evan’s report. I think JD might be lying here. but I have no proof, so I won’t say anything definite.

That theory cannot be proven:
In a Thursday piece in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, columnist Randy Galloway, citing numerous sources within the Rangers organization, said a since-fired team employee knew of Washington’s “situation.” Using that knowledge, the individual tried to blackmail the Rangers, Galloway said.

When reached by ESPNDallas.com, Rangers general manager Jon Daniels denied the report.

without a statement from our esteemed owner. good to know he is on top of things!

So, Wash needs to stay clean

for about 3 more weeks then.

If it wouldn’t get him fired, he should, after the sale of the team is finalized, hand Hicks a big bag of weed.

Do you realize how many players used amphetemines during the time Ron played?

That’s not a big story, and neither should the current story at hand be. I love mainstream media.

I get that it's ST and all...but Lewis needs to come out and look better than he did last time out.

Strop needs to get a good outing also…making me look bad.

Yes

But Lewis was also screwed by a bad misplay at SS by Olmedo and then left a meatball to Upton. Yeah he needs to look better but as long as he gets his arm up to regular season strength by Opening Day I will forget about his spring numbers and judge him based on his regular season stuff

The D didn't help him for sure.

I just want to be put at ease on if he is going to be a legit starter, or even a decent innings eater in the U.S.
I have faith in our scouting department…I just want to know NOW if his success in Japan will translate here. I don’t want 6 or 7 starts of him getting micturated on for the Rangers to find out the hard way.

Just being selfish.

I'm contemplating on whether or not I go tonight.

If I do, it will be alone, and I’m about 1 hour and 45 minutes away from surprise. I would sit nice though.
