Friday a.m. Rangers things
Yesterday's spring game against the Brewers may have had a significant impact on who makes the starting rotation...
Matt Harrison was very impressive yesterday, striking out 5 batters in a row at one point while going four innings and allowing two runs, helping his cause.
Meanwhile, Tommy Hunter, who appeared to have the fourth starter spot well in hand, was scratched from his start yesterday because of a strained ribcage muscle. Depending on how long he's sidelined, he could end up starting the season on the d.l. or in the minors, meaning two of the candidates for the fifth starter job could be in the rotation.
Evan Grant thinks the Hunter injury could open the door for C.J. Wilson to make the rotation. So does Richard Durrett.
Anthony Andro writes that the Rangers are trying to get both Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Taylor Teagarden into game shape, while trying to make a decision as to which will be the starter this season.
The S-T has some notes up from yesterday, including a rundown of the B game. T.R. Sullivan also has some notes from yesterday.
Buster Olney has some comments on the Ron Washington situation.
The type of people who send angry emails to Randy Galloway sent angry emails to Randy Galloway yesterday, expressing anger at Nolan Ryan for not having fired Ron Washington, anger at Galloway for not demanding that Washington be fired, and claiming they aren't going to go to TBIA anymore because a cokehead is the manager. Whatever.

On a positive note
Now that Wash is an admitted coke user that should translate into some added fans from the Houston area to replace any we may lose from the DFW area.

Hunter sounds like he is out
of the original rotation. That should open a 2nd spot in the rotation.
My guess is CJ and BMac have to fight off the late challenge by Harrison for those 2 spots.

Yeah. I think CJ and BMac get the nod based on experience, but Harrison joins the bullpen with an eye on BMac's spot.
With Harrison’s dominant short inning performances, I can envision the Rangers FO thinking about a CJ career path for Harrison.
Pro baseball has always been a dream, so this is pretty freakin’ cool out here. -- Tim Steggall, undrafted Rangers minor leaguer.
What do you base that on?
Here’s my thinking:
What the AFL and ST have shown the FO about Harrison is that he’s becoming a different pitcher and he’s extremely effective in short-inning situations, which is why I would guess they would let him continue to refine his new dominant self in the bullpen.
They are about to learn whether CJ can get through a batting order twice, but they clearly have learned he can control his pitch count.
They know BMac is league-average #4 or #5, and might be a little less homer prone as he learns to use his cutter.
So, I think they go with CJ over BMac, so long as CJ has a good outing when he faces the batting order twice. And, I think they go with BMac over Harrison by virtue of Harrison reinventing himself.
If Hunter is injured, my guess is the likely scenario is CJ and BMac in the rotation, and Harrison is a BMac three-game slump away from being in the rotation. Though, I think Harrison gets a good look as a starter on the remaining ST start days that would’ve gone to Hunter. If CJ slips, I could see Harrison and BMac in the rotation.
If Hunter isn’t injured, it’s still a toss-up between CJ and BMac for the fifth spot.
Pro baseball has always been a dream, so this is pretty freakin’ cool out here. -- Tim Steggall, undrafted Rangers minor leaguer.

An excellent point.
I think the Rangers should run “sanctimonious dickheads won’t be in attendance due to ‘moral’ outrage” commercials now.
It ought to cut down
on the huge crowds of church kids who go to the christian music concert games and don’t pay ANY attention to the game and are loud and obnoxious throughout.
Yeah, I’m totally deluding myself.

You are, because it's likely that the only person on the team they actually know of is Josh Hamilton.

Maybe not...
I’d guess there’s a lot of overlap between the “morally outraged sanctimonious dickhead” crowd and the “church crowd”.
This has been my experience.
But I forgot about the Hamilton thing. They probably cancel each other out.

So
Does that mean the Rangers can replace some of those “family-friendly” concerts with some music that appeals to someone other than 12-year-olds, country-western fans, and/or the church crowd?

Not that I'm planning on boycotting
or anything along those lines. But how is it that everyone is OK with this? The manager does coke and everyone thinks its no big deal? I feel like I’m in bizzaro world.
This isn’t an irreplaceable player that you stomach through it because he has natural talent that you can’t find elsewhere. This is somebody who’s job is almost 100% mental and he has the poor judgment to sniff cocaine, knowing that he is subject to drug tests. We have the team leader and the guy who is supposed to hold players to their responsibilities totally shirking all common sense and doing lines. How is anyone supposed to have any faith in his decision making process knowing that it is fickle enough or poor enough to fall into a trap so easily avoided.
I also don’t feel like telling the team after you’ve been tested, knowing you’ll be busted, that you did it is any sort of “stand up move”. That is every bit as stand up as me fessing up to getting in a fight at grade school before the teacher can tell my parents. If he said something before the test that would be one thing but anything after finding out you were going to be tested is too late for any “cry for help” sympathy.
It may be that I work in an industry where failing a drug test ends your career and have no sympathy but I just don’t understand the complacence here.
I'm ok with it because it happened months ago and
nothing appears to have cropped up since then. I’m also ok with it because the players sure as hell seem to like this guy and want to win for him.
The players just found out
They didn’t know until this week as I’ve read the story. You think that a person doesn’t lose luster in people’s eyes when they find something like this out? Imagine if you found out your boss did coke last year: would you still take him seriously? Would his opinion still matter in whether or not you should do coke?
I can’t see him being able to tell anyone anything this year without the players secretly thinking “Yea, well maybe you shouldn’t be sniffing coke.” It is not about what they say publicly it is about what they think personally and a revelation like this has to affect that.

Maybe because their best hitter was out of the lineup?

Possible but winning makes everything better
and I think this team is gonna end up winning a lot a games regardless of who’s at the helm.
Well, thing is it's too late to fire him now
With everybody saying all the politically correct things and the team swooning all over themselves in support of him right now, firing him for something they spent over 6 months ignoring is pretty much out of the question.
He should’ve been fired at the end of last season – I have no idea how a major league manager can get away with being both shitty at his job and snorting coke. But the thing is he did.

Because he’s a very likable guy. That’s all that I can think of.
The most logical explanation I can think of
Is that the Rangers fear some kind of a clubhouse reprisal if they fire Ron.
And I’d wager that fear has saved his job several times over.

if you trusted his performance last season, with a couple coke uses, then you should trust him this year now that he’s “recovered”

You're proceeding under some false assumptions here.
Would you work for a cokehead?
The evidence on hand actually doesn’t support this at all. Based upon the testing done since, RW is not a cokehead. At best you can conclude he made a single error in judgment last season. However, if your argument is that he should have been fired, blowing the evidence out of proportion with statements like “cokehead” certainly makes your argument sound more reasonable. The problem is that if you have to change the facts to fit your argument, your argument is pretty weak.

I’ve seen plenty of real cokeheads and they act nothing like RW. There is definitely a segment of society that believes strongly in zero tolerance and wants to see the worst in everybody—and the conclusions you are jumping to are exactly how that crowd would view this situation. What the hell man?
He did some coke. Who the fuck cares? Someone getting drunk is in no better “mental or moral standing” in my eyes. Which is to say, I plan to get drunk tonight, so party on Ron Washington, party the fuck on.
Monday morning, I’ve got a seminar to teach. Is my actions over the weekend going to make me less credible because I was blitzed out of my mind? No. I always perform my work duties at the zenith of awesomeness regardless of how reckless I am with the substances I put in my body in my spare time because I understand that being an adult has responsibilities.
If Ron Washington can do that as Texas Ranger manager—and no, Ron, putting Eddie Guardado in, in the 7th, of a tied game DOES NOT COUNT—and isn’t endangering the lives of others with his choices, who the fuck cares what he does with his spare time?
Stop the regulatin’ and playa hatin’, man. Ron Washington doesn’t tell you what to do with your precious spare time.

I don’t drink, but I have no problem with drinking. I do have a problem with drunkenness. I’ve seen too many lives and families destroyed by people who couldn’t stay away from the bottle.

The last two presidents, to our knowledge, didn’t do coke when they were in office period, muchless during important times of their terms.
The fact that Washington is black has nothing whatsoever to do with my wanting him fired for this. At what level do we forget about the color of his skin and judge him like we judge a white manager?
He mangles the language like no other manager I’ve ever seen but we’re not supposed to talk about that because, well , that might seem racist. Then we sit here and watch rampant managerial dumbassery but we’re not supposed to say anything because that might seem racist.
I’m fairly tough with Josh Hamilton. The last time I checked, he’s a big white boy. I’m sick of his excuses and I’m beginning to think this boy (look I can call him “boy” without sounding like a racist) has a lot of con in him. It’s time for him to STFU and start hitting.
My problem with Ron Washington is that he’s not very smart with his decisions (on and off the field) and a coke problem isn’t going to improve his competence as the manager of my favorite baseball team.

Henry V, at Agincourt, faced 30,000 French, mostly knights, with less than 10,000 English, mostly archers. At that time, nobles were not at much risk in battle… they were worth more alive than dead. But Henry was a pious man, and told his men that he faced the same risks they faced… that he would leave the field either victorious or dead. That’s leadership: when your men know that you will take the same risks that they will take, that you will bear the same burdens. The words being said by his men seem to indicate that Wash is a leader, you’re benighted bitch-sessions notwishstanding.

He can turn down coke on game day.
We seem to have substantial proof that he turned down coke on game day for half a season.
What we do know is that on one particular night he didn’t turn down coke. And by reports he went to his superiors to throw himself on his sword, and they, for whatever reason, decided against that course.
You know what I don’t respect? Drunken philanderers. I bet there’s a few guys in a clubhouse here or there that would agree with me there. But I bet there’s plenty of major league managers who “can’t turn down” drinking and philandering on game day.
See you’re adopting this moralistic preening as if this particular mistake is somehow holier than any other mistake. That’s nonsense. He fucked up, management forgave him for it, the team says they’re behind him, and that’s the long and short of it.

is what is it about cocaine specifically that has certain people so rankled?
Sure, it’s illegal and that’s not so good. It probably shows a lack of judgment considering his position, but the same could be said about many substances that can be harmful, that are legal, such as alcohol, if used stupidly.
But man, it’s not like a couple of lines of coke here and there is affecting anything about his job performance. I don’t want to be all “drugs are cool!” but if anything, if you’re going to do a drug as a baseball manager, coke seems like a pretty decent choice considering it just makes you ultra-alert and energetic without any real hallucinogenic properties and not much of a come-down.
What is it specifically about cocaine that has pushed people over the edge here?

From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered;
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne’er so vile
This day shall gentle his condition:
And gentlemen in England, now a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhood’s cheap whiles any speaks

In your definitions
Does RW have a coke-problem if he’s tests negative thrice a week all next season?
Recreational use is not indicative of a problem
The guy who gets drunk on New Years Eve and St. Paddy’s day but no other time has a drinking “problem”? What Wash did was illegal and that’s about it. When LaRussa got busted for a DUI, passed out in a running car is more troublesome than Wash but I guarantee you think LaRussa’s a great manager.
"You promised me, Eckstein, that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I noticed that during the most trying periods of my life, there have only been one set of prints in the sand. So you’re cool with a manager who gets so drunk he passes out in a running car but not a manager who failed one drug test and has passed 3-times-a-week testing since then. Got it.

You don’t know if another manager has tested positive or not. These tests are to remain confidential. For Wash it didn’t work out, but there could be dozens of coaches that have tested positive for all we know.
It really hasn’t been observed that he has “a coke problem”. He’s done it once and has been clean since.

I don't really care what he does personally
but he HAS to know that a) MLB has drug testing; b) it looks really bad for anyone to be caught using whatever; and c) he’s the manager of a club with key players already associated with drug use – that’d be a headline news story.
To me, the terrible judgment is that he was willing to take that risk. To me, that is unfathomable. If some grad student with no risk of a drug test wants to do whatever, I don’t care. But when a person is in an incredibly public position that has testing and getting caught probably means losing everything you’ve worked for in your career? That is insanity to me. That is my problem with his actions.

Since you brought up grad students.
What if he didn’t think he’d be tested right after? I mean, it’s once a year testing. And it just started in 2008. So it was only a year old program. Perhaps he’s thinking, like most people would: “Ahh shucks, no way they would test me the next 3 days. Besides, I don’t even think this program is really even started up yet.”
He’s stressed out, noticed some candy on a table, was a little tipsy, and thought, no one will ever know. He may have completly forgot about the program was even going on. It was a year old and no one else to date has been caught publically. Not sure if privately they have some positive tests.

I pretty much agree entirely with you
It bothers me that a man who is basically on the job because of his judgment would have such awful judgment.
I’m actually surprised that he wasn’t fired, and I think that speaks volumes about Nolan and JD. I recognize that being in their position there are a lot of factors to weigh, and I won’t pretend that I know better than they do how to solve this particular problem. But this is big – you can sit here and deny it’s importance or make jokes about it, but especially from a PR point of view, this is the sort of thing a team trying to build respect with the fans needs to be very careful about. Basically, I hope JD and Nolan knew what they were doing.
Anyway, I do think that this is a very big deal, and I’m troubled by it.
Go Rice Owls!
I don't recall anyone saying they're "OK" with Wash doing this
But here’s the thing – everyone here has screwed up somehow and gotten a second chance. And everyone here has been around someone who screwed up and given that person a second chance.

A major league manager
has to command respect from the room for one. Crackheads don’t make for good authority figures.
The other biggest reason is that his decisions before and during a game need to be bought into and unquestioned by the players and to a much smaller degree, the fans. Cliche alert – everybody has to be on the same page with their leader.
A major league manager makes thousands of decisions before and during games and no matter how good he is, he’s going to be wrong quite a bit. That’s just the nature of the game. You don’t want players and fans questioning whether or not your brain is rotted from all the cocaine you’ve smoked or snorted in your life and is affecting your ability to make game-time decisions.

Of course the players are all going to say they are on the
same page as their leader. Their entire focus centers around winning games and they don’t need or want distractions.
Your manager having a coke problem is a very big distraction, one of the biggest because he’s the only manager in the history of the game to fail a drug test….and it wasn’t pot or speed but mf’ing cocaine!!
The early reviews (last September) for This Thing between the lines knowing their manager had a coke problem aren’t good and we’ll soon find out what kind of effect it’s had because one of the wonderful things about the Great Game is that dysfunction will play itself out between the lines no matter how much talent you have on your team.

Fine - leave it at that
There are plenty of people that think he’s a bad baseball manager. There are some (me) that suspect the players like him and play hard for him. Nothing wrong with either position.
But quit trying to portray him as a coke/crack addict.

but I also don’t think it was his first swim in the Cocaine River and that MLB just happened to show up with a cup (DAMN THE LUCK!!).
Players may play hard for him but they don’t seem to finish out their seasons well for him when it matters (19-29 in ’08 7 8-15 in ’09).

So are CJ and BMac still in front of Harrison for those two rotation spots?
I got chastised last week for considering Harrison’s successful ST and BMac’s underwhelming one. I was promptly corrected about the SSS and ST training results not mattering.

The thing is...
we’re all pretty aware that spring training results are likely mirages, and think about sample size issues, but the team probably doesn’t weigh these as heavily.
I still think
Harrison having options and BMac not having them weighs in BMacs favor.

The option thing is likely to play a big role
but that bums me out a bit. Give me the younger lefty that throws 5 pitches, lost 30 lbs, touches mid 90’s, and struck out 8 in 4 innings. Sure, injuries will occur and a spot will open up, but c’mon.
I am pretty excited about Harrison.
I've gotten excited about Harrison before...

Part of me is convinced
That a trade is coming. RIght now, the rotation is likely Harden-Feldman-Lewis-Harrison-McCarthy. Moscoso and Nippert are probably semi-capable 5th starters of their own right, and hopefully Tommy Hunter doesn’t have TOS. Longterm, the team also sees Feliz and Holland as starters.
That’s too much talent to waste in AAA or relegate to relief work. It’s hard to believe another team couldn’t find a real use for some of our guys and give us a fair bit of value.
no mention of CJ?

I don't know what to think of CJ
I think the bottom line there is that we know he’s an excellent setup man; we have no idea how effective he’d be as a starter. Guys like BMac, Harrison, Holland, and Feliz have ALWAYS been seen as starters.
If another team sees CJ’s spring and is convinced he can be a starter for them, I’d have no problem at all dealing him for the right player. But I’m not sure he’s a fit in this roto.

I don’t think there’s anything to worry about regarding TOS. An intercostal strain means he probably just over-rotated on a pitch and pulled a rib cage muscle. TOS typically presents with numbness in the affected arm. If we see that, then we are in trouble.

With the Hunter injury
there are a couple of scenarios now where we would have two lefties in the rotation, and that might end up being a good thing. Those scenarios being Wilson and Harrison winning the 4th and 5th spots, or Lewis being ousted and 3 4 and 5 being Wilson, Bmac and Harrison.
Lewis will be in the rotation.
It was guaranteed to him when he signed. I would put Wilson, Lewis and harrison in the 3-4-5 rotation spots right now. BMac can go to the bullpen and Hunter to the DL.

Anyone else wonder why there's been no
Holland to the bullpen talk? Maybe I’ve just missed it, but it seems like there’s this acceptance that Feliz is going to the pen and Holland is going to the rotation in AAA. I think he would be better in the pen than McCarthy and he’s a lefty, so, especially if Wilson is in the rotation, we could use a lefty in the pen.
See: Darren Oliver

Difference:
Holland has been mediocre in the pen, so it’s more advantageous to let someone else give us those innings and let Holland develop.
We can’t afford to let Feliz develop as a starter in AAA, because he’s too valuable dominating late-innings—so the theory goes
After seeing Holland's #'s with men on 2nd or 3rd I don't want him near the pen anytime soon.
He’s a starter, I just can’t see him ever being a bullpen guy.

Well
It is simply a financial decision.
Would you rather have $10 million now, or would you rather have $5 million now and $5 million paid out over the next 10 years at, say, 5% interest?
I think agents like doing the deferred money thing because the money is often deferred at rates much less than what the team could borrow for, and thus a contract with an announced value of, say, $100 million could really be worth more like $90-95 million if you present value it using a market interest rate.

who thought that BGL would make the rotation, but this isn’t how I thought it would happen. Of course it’s nice to know that when there’s an injury the team doesn’t have to look far to fill he hole. As things are now I think the rotation will be Harden, Feldman, Wilson, Lewis, Harrison. I think McCarthy makes the team, but starts in the ’pen.
I also think that both Holland and Feliz start the year in OKC. I would rather Feliz be in the Rangers ‘pen to limit his innings and help the big league club, but for some reason I think they’re going to send him down to work on the offspeed stuff.

Think about this, if you are gullible enough to believe that, he’s 57 years old, he’s never tried it, he’s in the middle of the season and his team is fighting for first place. He just signed a contract extension with the Texas Rangers. You are a major league manager and you are 57 years old and now you are going to make the decision, knowing that you are subject to drug testing by the way, but now you are going to try it? You talk about bad decision-making, but this is the guy who is the face of the franchise. That’s what managers are.
