Yep. My brackets are toast.
But, that sure was a lot of fun yesterday.
March is by far my favorite month of the year:
ST, especially with daily reports on Scheppers, Harrison, Moreland, Ogando, Alfaro, Profar, CJ, and so on
Men’s March Madness
Women’s March Madness
College hockey tourney
Severe Weather
It’s such a great month.
Pro baseball has always been a dream, so this is pretty freakin’ cool out here. -- Tim Steggall, undrafted Rangers minor leaguer.

It's not as much madness as the men's side, of course.
But, at Iowa State, the women’s team consistently ranks higher then the men’s and so they have a pretty large following. Their games are pretty fun too as they have quirky minor-league-baseball sort of stunts during breaks and kid-oriented promotions.

Everyone's brackets are toast.
Stupid Georgetown. But with as many misses as I have already, most people do. I’m either in first or second place in every league, including the LSB one.

Three of my Elite Eight are gone.
But, my Final Four is still intact.

Georgetown is my only elite 8 team gone.
All my final 4 are in fact. Aggies in the Sweet 16! (Just like Obama.)
GU is my only EE lost.
But I’ve lost Vandy and Minnesota from the Sweet 16, too.
I thought Xavier was pretty close to Minnesota, and wouldn’t be surprised if someone could prove they were better, but I thought the winner will beat Pittsburgh. I just picked the wrong one. :(
Ouch...
I’ve only lost one of my Sweet Sixteen so far (I had Gtown in the elite 8 too) but I’m sure that will change after today. I have a lot of brave/stupid picks.

Will the Big East be crapped on for doing poorly in a similar conference the way the Pac 10 was one of their great years?
No.
I’m pretty sure the Pac 10 is overall the least respected conference.

Semantics I guess
Lately the Pac 10 has sucked. But, if they were the dominant conference in basketball and football I doubt they’d be crapped on. What I mean is the “disrespect” is warranted — I think of it as a negative when they are disrespected when they should be respected.
I don’t know if that makes any sense.

Well
Of course. I don’t think anybody thinks that if they started dominating as a conference like the Big XII that they’d be disrespected. It’s not any kind of inherent quality about the schools.
It’s just that the conference usually sucks, and so coming out of the Pac 10 doesn’t mean as much as coming out of the Big XII/East/SEC/whatever.

See, here's the deal.
It has not sucked. It was still probably the 6th best conference in the country this year in basketball. It was weak at the top but WSU may have been the best last-place Pac 10 team ever. That’s a down year for a power conference, but that’s not sucking. They were much better than they got credit for in basketball last year.
In football they’re not the best BCS conference, but that doesn’t mean they suck, it means they’re not the best.
And this is where it comes from. The Pac 10 had a great year in ‘08 as one of the 2 or 3 best conferences in the country, but people decided they sucked because of how they did in a one-and-done tournament. I don’t see other conferences having the same standard applied to them. I don’t see conferences being called sucky for actually being good nearly as often or people leaping to rip them down the way they do with the Pac 10.
Sure, over the last few years when the SEC was about as good as the Pac 10 is now, I heard a few people trashing them, but not nearly as many. The SEC got less trash when they were where the Pac 10 was this year than the Pac 10 got when they were maybe the best conference in the country.
OK
I get what you’re saying. I think your problem is semantics. When other people say the P10 sucks — I don’t think they mean it’s like the worst conference in the NCAA or anything.

by Dirk Diggler on Mar 19, 2010 3:30 PM CDT up reply actions
I assume they mean it sucks.
Which it doesn’t.
But I absolutely think people underrate the conference. Last year it had the best total Pomeroy rating in the nation, but they were still told they sucked. It was a down year for the KenPoms in predicting games so it stands to reason it missed on Pac 10 teams, but not so much they sucked.
When they failed in the tournament in 2008 they were told they sucked far more than the Big East is right now. Similar situations, very different reactions.
Well
There’s at least one team that we can be absolutely sure sucked…

Our best football was post-Ryan Leaf, though.
It’s more like the curse of Mike Price. His fuck up in Alabama forced the ghost of Bear Bryant to piss on us.
Or, more likely, Price was a magical man who managed to build a quality football program for a poor school in the middle of nowhere, and I don’t expect it to ever happen again.
I don't think it is warranted, though.
Saying they suck this year is inaccurate. I don’t think the disrespect shown to the Pac 10 is proportionate to their actual performance when compared to other conferences.
Disagree.
If the Pac 10 was showing as poorly as the Big East, it would be the #1 topic on most basketball boards I frequent and it would be much more talked about by the media.
And I don’t think “lately it’s warranted” more than other conferences who got less crap when they had down years. Two power conferences — or any conferences — being equal, the Pac 10 will always get more insults and less respect.
I don't follow college basketball as much as football
So I’ll take your word on that.

If I had to guess the reason, one might be fewer fans.
I’d be willing to bet Pac 10 fans trash the Big East and SEC and ACC plenty, but there are fewer people out west and fewer Pac 10 schools than people on the east coast or fans in any of those schools. And, of course, that’s where most of the media is situated.
This is speculation, but I’m guessing it’s just because of numbers.
I still have hope in the LSB contest...
I have the highest rated bracket with Kentucky as a winner and was 11 out of 16, so if they go all the way I stand a pretty good chance.

Playing closer to home in what I expect to be pretty close to a home crowd (USU is huge up here) with no Robbie Hummel to worry about. Utah St. played almost as well as Purdue even before Hummel wsa out. Certainly Purdue can still win, but I don’t expect them to be the better team anymore.

A&M is playing the best I've seen them all year.
It’s like they got pissed off by all the people picking the other Aggies.
Oh lord.
A&M is apparently at almost 140 offensive efficiency and almost 70% effective field goal rate.
I doubt they sustain that, but if they do that would have to be the best performance of the tournament, right? And that FG rate isn’t adjusted for opponent.
I'm doing good today.
Rank 3 and 18 of 23 not too shabby iorange, not too shabby.

I know you're a big-time stathead, but I would caution you against using stats to predict the Ags
They had defied prediction and logic ever since December when D-Ro went down. This team thrives on senior leadership, chemistry, coaching, and the emotion of playing for D-Ro.
"Dying ain't hard. It’s living in the wake of a thorough public humiliation that’s hard.--JDT217
Since December, though. . .
. . . they played 9 teams ranked higher than them in the Pomeroys, including USU. Four of those were teams pretty close to them, and they went 3-1 in those games, with the Utah State one being the only one that wasn’t close. Of the teams ranked significantly ahead of them, they only beat Baylor (by 7) at home. They also lost to Oklahoma St.
So that’s 4-5 against better teams, with most of those wins coming in close matchups. So they’re 1 or 2 wins better than should probably have been expected over that period. I wouldn’t say that’s much defying.

Double digit seeds playing well today. Would have been nice if Ohio and MSU could have held on, we’d be pulling for our fourth and fifth double digits in the Sweet 16.
’Course, at some point that would mean bad basketball in the later rounds.

Washington was almost certainly better than New Mexico, though.
You get an 11 seed by being remarkably unlucky and a 3 by being remarkably lucky. And then when that luck disappears, your 11 destroys your 3.

Dunno yet...
Was he talking about the NBA draft? I guess I just assumed so. Maybe I’m confused.
Or were you asking who the top 5 players should be? In that case, it’s easy: Wall, Turner, Favors, Cousins, and Aminu. And my point was only that those guys are good enough that no matter which teams are picking, they’re going to be happy.
As a matter of fact, this seems like a good year to have a first rounder of any kind. Maybe it’s worth buying one for the Mavs?
by brettgardner on Mar 20, 2010 7:15 PM CDT up reply actions
Yeah, top 5 players, my mind went blank, I couldn't remember Turner and Cousins names
To me, It’s always worth buying one.
Yeah, I was talking NBA draft
I might put Wes Johnson in front of Aminu, but I suppose they’re coin-flips.
I’m not sure if the back-end of the first round is as solid (in terms of producing role players and contributors) than last year’s though, but the lottery talent definitely looks better (though of course this year’s class exceeded expectations).
Remember to retire Fin's number, Mark.
UK's backup freshman center will probably be a lottery pick in next years draft
assuming he returns to school
But the Mavs do have Haywood now, and hopefully they resign him.
What needs do they have? Another low-post scorer? A shooting guard who can spread the floor?
Remember to retire Fin's number, Mark.
Do the Mavs even have a #1 this year?
They need to start thinking about a post-Dirk PF who can give him a rest as he gets older, but I wouldn’t say that’s the highest priority. Maybe a better SF? What is Butler’s natural position, is he a 2 or a 3?
I am Jurickson Profar son of judeska and chesmond.. And I was born ready! ready to play baseball!!- Jurickson Profar 2/15/2010
Caron's a natural SF, I think.
So is Marion, so they’re loaded there.
I wonder if you could dump Damp’s contract (DUST chip or not) and pick him up for cheap again to tandem with Haywood.
Remember to retire Fin's number, Mark.
Absolutely.
I think no matter what, Damp is coming back. I mean, maybe somebody wants to spend any part of the MLE or BAE on him, but I doubt it.
by brettgardner on Mar 20, 2010 7:27 PM CDT up reply actions
He's getting something close to 13 mil next year if I recall.
No way we can get rid of that. Mavs will have to bite the bullet for one more year it looks like.
Mavs need a young guy who can step in and back up Haywood for the next two-three years and then takes over.

Depending on where it is
You would say Favors, just because of the rawness. The best thing that could happen to him is to be stashed on the bench of a good team for a year or two. But I’m not sure it’s an ideal use of resources that high.
So maybe I’d only do it if you’re going to get Turner or Cousins.

No, not like this.
They’re scoring like 1.5 points a possession. That’s unreal. Prior to this, the most Wisconsin had allowed was 1.27. They only allowed more than 1.1 points a possession five times all season. They scored 87 points in about 60 possessions against one of the best defenses in the country while not even playing at a high tempo.
This was WAY over their heads, but that doesn’t make it anything less than incredible. That is ridiculous shooting. Absolutely f’ing ridiculous.
