Well

wOBA’s: Wieters .330, Davis .311.

Wieters managed to provide literally league average offense from a below-average offensive position in his rookie season, while Davis would’ve been the worst first baseman in baseball if it weren’t for Aubrey Huff and Hank Blalock.

A stupid statement is any less stupid because it’s supposed to be from a certain perspective.

Because even from a fantasy standpoint, I doubt there’s any way Wieters was as bad as Davis was.

Because Wieters hurt a bunch of peoples fantasy teams in an apparently similar way to what Chris Davis did, this gives them the excuse to say that he was as bad as Chris Davis?

Wieters was going to be Joe Mauer combined with Chuck Norris. Davis was going to be an elite first baseman. Both fell massively short of the expectation.

Mickey Mantle has been reincarnated, and he’ll be playing C for the Baltimore Orioles. From what I’ve seen, minor league video and last year in the bigs, I’m pretty meh.

Than I see the Chuck Norris-like jokes about the guy and wonder, am I being Punk’d by the entire baseball community? Is he legit, overhyped, or the proverbial ‘a little of both’?

If he turned out to be the next Ted Simmons, that would be an incredible career. Anything less, and it seems he’s set up as a bust. I dunno, I’m just missing something.

by scoop16 on Mar 21, 2010 1:31 AM CDT up reply actions

Whoah, wait.

Really? You think Wieters’ MiLB track record is meh? You should go back and check out the careers of people who hit like him. Almost all of them would be Hall of Famers if they were catchers; I’ll see if I can find the list. He comps to great, great players. He’s a switch hitter with amazing plate discipline and good power. He’d have been the top prospect in baseball if he was a first baseman just based on how good a hitter he is. He is a catcher.

Then, PECOTA came out and projected him to be the best player in the American League as a rookie if given a full season. CHONE, conservatively, projected him to be near All-Star level as a rookie with a full year (and his rates weren’t too short of that). But he’s still comped at a level prospects are rarely at. Nothing about his track record is meh.

And neither was his rookie year. It fell short of his projections, but he still put up nearly a league-average season in limited time as a rookie, that’s good.

The jokes came because of how hilarious his PECOTA projections were, and that was just for fun.

by philkid3 on Mar 21, 2010 1:14 AM CDT up reply actions

Naw, the track record is pretty damn awesome.

The talk/projections is what gets me. I’m just going off eye test, take it for what it is, on my judgment.

Combine the hype with the jokes, and that’s where I was confused. Now I see where the jokes came from, and they were warranted. Major league baseball is a different animal.

If you're talking about disappointment from young players

I think Wieters is comparable to Davis. Davis didn’t have the expectations that Wieters had going into last season. Davis had his doubters and also wasn’t expected to be a top 1B in the league. Wieters was supposed to come up and begin dominating the league and doing a Joe Mauer impression right away.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Wieters was supposed to come up and begin dominating the league and doing a Joe Mauer impression right away.

If that was really the expectation, it was an unreasonable one. Wieters was overhyped as a prospect, true, but if someone honestly thinks his season was anywhere near as disappointing as Chris Davis’s, they’re pretty stupid.

Of course, I should probably remember this is a fantasy baseball site that we’re talking about here, and fantasy baseball moguls analyze things in relation to their stupid teams.

Ron Washington is: The Bad Manager - Port of Call New Orleans

by lonestarJon on Mar 20, 2010 8:50 PM CDT up reply actions

That was the hype that was around Wieters from everyone

It wasn’t a matter of if, it was just a matter of when he would come up and establish himself as a top 3 catcher. When you look at what Davis was expected to do and his resulting fantasy stats (the crappy OBP is far less important here), he still managed to give 21 HRs, 59 RBI, and 48 runs through 2/3 of a season. Even with the crappy BA, that’s still not terrible. Blalock last season was a similar case, his HRs helped give him some fantasy value while his actual on the field value sucked.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Yeah it wasn't restricted to fantasy, Wieters was universally acclaimed to be the imminent reincarnation of Chuck Norris at the catcher spot

So because of that, his season was a massive disappointment. Hence the not illogical comp to the massively disappointing Davis season.

Surely the ceiling of the two is different, but the disappointment is similar.

by WestTxAg06 on Mar 20, 2010 9:03 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

From a non-fantasy perspective, I don't think Wieters was a massive disappointment.

Most of the “hype” around Wieters was for fun based around the hilariousness of his PECOTA projection. No one actually thought he should reach that or he’d be a failure.

I’ll bet you if you asked every single person who hyped Wieters, if you asked them if they’d consider league-average offense from his first season to be a massive disappointment, I’ll bet you almost all of them would say, “no, that’s pretty good.”

He wasn’t that far from his CHONE projections, btw. Mostly just the playing time fell short.

by philkid3 on Mar 20, 2010 11:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe it was unreasonable, that's not the point.

A lot of the David hype was unreasonable, too. The point was, they both fell short, and Wieters is the only person who was arguably on Davis’s level.

Wieters wasn't overhyped as a prospect.

Why Lewis over Feldman?

Are you that worried about Feldman’s K totals to take Lewis over him from a fantasy perspective?

The only thing

Feldman can produce in fantasy is wins, and that’s not a guarantee.

This is assuming, of course, 5×5-7×7 (i.e. not super advanced statistics).

by brettgardner on Mar 20, 2010 8:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Of course

I don’t think Lewis can produce anything, either.

by brettgardner on Mar 20, 2010 8:52 PM CDT up reply actions

If you don't think Feldman will decline much from last season

You’re looking at getting wins with a good ERA and WHIP to make up for the fewer Ks. And that’s if you think Feldman won’t see his Ks improve this season like they did as the season went along last season. I can see favoring Lewis to get more Ks, but I don’t get taking him over Feldman in ERA, WHIP, and wins.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

I don't either.

But I guess it depends on the league. If you’re in a deep league with a lot of smart players, then maybe taking a flyer on Feldman late in the draft is smart.

I just know that in the leagues I’m in, I don’t have any room for a 4-4.2 ERA, decent WHIP, and relatively little Ks or K/9s.

A better bargain?

Well

I mentioned Lewis because a lot of the projection systems have him as the best starter on the team.

If the projection systems are right, then he’s a quality fantasy option, and he’s not someone that is going to be going high on a lot of boards.

So from that standpoint, Lewis is a lot more worthy of discussing, fantasy-wise, than Feldman, who doesn’t seem to have that sort of outlier-TORP potential.

But, especially if Hunter’s not going to be there to start the season, I’d prefer to have Holland in the rotation. Whatever, hopefully if he’s going to be as good as I expect, it will start with him being that good at AAA, and hopefully then he won’t be in AAA long.
